Why You Should Buy A PS3 (Backwards Compatible) With A PS5

- Sony's had a shaky history with backwards compatibility, and thankfully PS5 handles it beautifully for PS4 games. But right up to launch and even now, everyone is asking for PS3, PS2, and PS1 support. In an ideal world you'd only need one console, but since that's not gonna happen.. how about two? In fact, I'd argue that's a really great setup. Two consoles, 27 years of games at your fingertips. Let's talk about what PS3 models you should look at, the compatibility you can expect, and why hardware reliability might be a thing of the past. Oh yes.. there will be games. (Awful movie reference, but I couldn't think of anything clever).

Imagine the people that sold their backwards compatible ps3 to buy the PS4... straight pain
Well old games are shit so that’s a great idea
Yeah that's the one thing that messed up with the start of the ps4 gen
I gave my ps3 to my father 😩 I’ve been regretting it since I shipped it to him
I sold mine last year, no regrets. Games from PS3/360 gen don’t really hold up too well, many are sub-720p. Most of the good ones from back then got released on PC too, and look and play way, way better on there.
I’ll sell my ps4 to get a ps3
The PS3 is still my go to DVD/Blu-ray player. Lots of great features and settings to play with.
Same here. But now I just my PS4 anyways as it's already set up.
You better take care of your PS3 and only play PS1-PS3 games on that console. Would be a shame if it stops working because of watching movies.

I really wish Sony would bring back the digital PS1 & PS2 selection that the PS3 store has, on the PS5. I don't care if the games have trophies, it would just be nice to be able to get these hard to find games digitally on the modern machine.
Also, it's hilarious trying to use a PS3 controller after using the PS5 pad for a bit. Man it feels cheap.
@@thelibertyking6735 right! I just got a ps3 slim in almost new condition and the controller is just so fresh and clean I really enjoy playing with it still. Just like you said a call to the past.
I can't even go back to the Dualshock 3. I use a DualSense on my PS3. Even the PS4 controller feels cheaper now after using the PS5 controller.

This video is exactly what I was looking for. Owning a PS3 backwards compatible and a PS5 would make a perfect setup.

One MAJOR problem Im finding - the PS2 games only play with certain controllers. You can use lots of 3rd party and fake controllers, even a DS4 to play the PS3 games on it, but when it flicks over to PS2 mode -- I found out like NONE of my 3rd party and apparently fake PS3 controllers work at all. S oi have one old one that wont hold battery but I have plugged in with cord... not ideal.
And new DS3 controllers are like $90-$100 on ebay now....
Im finding controllers to be the biggest problem. (Heck my nephew just broke his DS4 on his PS4, he called me crying -- (hes 4) - Local game shop had used, Best Buy had none, Gamestop had ONE new one left for $65.... Shit! And thats PS4!!!!

I'm a Sony guy for the most part, but my God Xbox has done something absolutely amazing with its backwards compatibility. I was playing Fable 3 on my Xbox Series X lately and I wanted to cry because of how good it is and how overwhelming the nostalgia was. The smooth 60 fps, lack of lags, better shadows and lighting and of course upscaling, this is night and day compared to the og 360 version.

This is one of my favorite videos of yours yet! It's fun to learn that I'm not the only one so deep in PlayStation nerdom that I have the memory card adapter and am aware of the recent discovery of the true cause of YLOD. My 60gb launch PS3 succumbed to YLOD back in 2012 and it was devastating; I lost all my saves since launch in 2006. I tried everything to revive it including sending it out to a repair company. All unsuccessful. I finally gave up and tearfully traded it +$100 to Sony for a Slim model + a copy of Twisted Metal. I can't say I regret it because it has been serving me well ever since. Plus, I love its design. The good news is that I managed to get my hands on a CECHE (Motorstorm) model a few years back. It's a bit banged up but it works. I'd like to refurbished it someday to get it looking like new. It's my dualshock 3s that are the real problem now.
But the truth is I have no use for PS2 emulation since all the titles I would ever want to play have been remastered for PS3. And I find it hard to play games from that era. Even PS3 games are starting to be uneasy on the eyes. I would always prefer to pay for a good remaster than have regular backwards compatibility. That's why I try to rebuy my library on PC. I just wish Sony would remaster the Resistance trilogy already (Killzone and infamous too).

It's cool to see the massive progress being made with PS3 emulation, even if it's still years from being as good as something like Wii U emulation (CEMU is soooo good). And one of the best part of emulation is that assuming the game is one that actually works well, it's a better experience than native hardware. You could run the game at 9 times the resolution and have a crystal clear experience.

Thank you for the vid, Ryan! I wasn't aware that they figured out the YLOD cause and can now perminantly fix it. One thing you forgot to mention is the fact that Fat PS3 test kits are region free for PS1 and PS2 games. They're hard to find, but it is possible to get games working from other regions on them. They also let you output all games at 1080p. I think you can't connect to PSN on them, but I may be wrong. Jailbreaking is another thing worth bringing up as you can play games that aren't even on the PSN store anymore. Anyways, thanks for the tips. I'm going to see if I can get someone to fix my PS3 now!

Have you been able able to fix your ps3? That solution he gave for fixing the ylod, got any idea if it would work for the slim ps3 version?
@@duztv5370 pretty sure most ylods is still caused by a bad RSX, not deteriorated NEC capacitors.
I bought an as is ps3 e01 off of ebay for 18 bucks with intent to fix it. Turns out, it was an a01 and just needed to be booted in safe mode for resolution settings. The only thing that didn't work was the disc drive! 40 bucks later and I swapped the fan for more blades, dd works just fine and now it stands next to my ps5 :)
Keep up the great ps3 content! Love these videos!
Good point about the region lock on the PS3's. I'm in the UK and bought the backwards compatible 2 years back and and still love it...a few weeks ago another appeared on FB Marketplace and they were looking for offers...I got it for £15 - (about $20 USA). It didn't come with a power supply or controller but luckily I have spares...anyway after plugging it in and trying several games....I found out that it was the North American model so it's of no use to me now. I would sell it as a stand alone unit but I reckon the shipping to the USA from the UK would be a small fortune due to the weight of it. Keep up the great video's. ;o)

Do you take any extra measures to protect the PS3 from overheating and getting YLOD? I used to have an early 80GB model CECHE01 PS3 and it eventually got YLOD after a few years. I was thinking of getting an early model again but I’m worried about reliability. Also did you upgrade the HDD?
Fun fact, I have both the 80gb soft emulation machine and the 20gb hard emulation machine, and the 80gb soft emulation displays ps2 games with a noticeably better/cleaner image, with richer colors on top of that. It’s like, actually a significant difference, and I was considering tweeting images of this out to you sometime Ryan.

Exactly the set-up that I have.
I have a backwards compatible PS3 with a 2Tb hard drive installed, and a PS5 with a 5Tb external HDD for my PS4 games.
Perfection.
Did you run out of storage yet? 💀
mind linking me to both hard drives!
2 TB for the PS3 backwards compatible is totally not necessary.
You literally can't go over 1TB the system can't handle it.
If you own a capable PC, PS2/PS3 emulators are great option as well. PS3 compability isn't perfect but when it works you can often boost both resolution and framerate.
This is what I say to people a lot too. I have the entire Need for Speed collection on PlayStation and this was the whole reason I went out to find an original PS3. It was also pretty cool to me that he used a Need for Speed PS2 disc to showcase the backwards compatibility. Luckily where I live there is a store that sells retro games and consoles called Vintage Stock for decent prices. Originally I was going to try and find one online but the prices were ridiculous. I managed to find one in my local store (and they are very rare) and bought it on the spot. It was a 60 GB model. A few months later I was visiting my Grandma out of state and I brought the PS3. I told her that I was now looking for the memory card adaptor. Well there was a little mom and pop shop down the road that sold retro games like vintage stock does, and they actually had one. So my grandma and I went down there and they sold it for only $20. I also managed to snag a PS5 from Vintage Stock. So I can play every Need for Speed game with only 2 PlayStations. I even made a shelf to display all the games and it looks amazing. I got lucky being able to find all of these things IN STORE, especially since I hate ordering online (I've always had a bad experience ordering online). The OG PS3 is amazing, it took the place for my favorite PlayStation, which was the PS2 before. Sadly though Need for Speed (2015) on the PS4 does get the warning message on PS5 that it may not play correctly, and it doesn't. Multiplayer messes up as other players don't show up in the correct places and the AI acts weird.
But at this point the only PlayStation I don't have is a PS1, so I've wondered if I should just get one for collection purposes. Vintage stock sells them for only $50. And one last thing about my PS3, it has the COD WaW skin on it. Kinda wish it had the OG black design to match the rest of my PlayStations, which are all OG black models (except for the PS5 of course, that's white).
What, no way, I would pay big bucks for that OG backwards compatible model... CoD: W@W is my favorite Call of Duty hands down and I had no idea the game had its own PS3 design... I'm looking this up now xD
Thanks. I have one of the very uncommon 20GB models which works great. I wasn’t aware of the capacitor failures, but now I know what to do if I do have problems. I just used an IOGear Ethernet-2-WiFi adapter to add WiFi.
I've got the CECHA01 PS3 and I love it! THANK YOU for stating the truth that the CECHA/B models are *not* 100% backwards compatible as so many people hype them up to be! While the PS2 backwards compatible is definitely 99.9% compatible due to it being almost entirely hardware-based (the PS3 still does emulate a few pieces of the PS2 such as its sound chip), the PS1 backwards compatibility isn't anywhere near 99% due to it being completely emulated in software, using a similar emulator to what's featured in the SCPH-750xx and later PS2 Slims which removed the PS1's CPU and replaced it with a PowerPC chip that emulates the PS1 on those models. It should also be known that the PS3 adds about 3 frames of lag to PS2 and PS1 games when you play them due to it deinterlacing and upscaling the image.
I’ve found that a PS2 Slim and PS3 Slim take up pretty much the same room as back compact PS3 on my shelf, so happy to stick with having 3 consoles when I can eventually get a PS5. I’m in the UK anyway so this is the best way to maximise compatibility with my Pal PS2 games.

Damn Ryan, I had NO idea about the capacitor thing. I have 2 YLOD'd 80 gig B/C consoles I can fix thanks to this info.
Just picked up my 17th-ever PS3 last week! A one-owner CECH-B01 with the warranty seal still intact. Just cracked it open and applied new Artic MX4 thermal paste. Searched 2 years for this unit! 🤩🔥
havent watched yet, but exactly what i have set up
PS3 (60 - 1tb) for everthing 1/2/3, and PS5 for 4/5
and a vita for PSP/PSX/VITA/16bit
And this is why Nintendo is outselling the ps5 no debate
Sony is againg copying nintendo, drifting problems and stock problems smh
Or just one new xbox
@@hectorbreton8898 Copying and doing it better.
@@sonicfan101sonic6 True but Nintendo doesn’t have backward compatibility of none of my save Nintendo games no debate.
I’m playing CoD Ghosts on the PS3, I need help with the ‘No Man Left’ trophy
Edit: After going through all the rage-quitters, I found 3 very good players and I finally got the trophy.
I love a happy ending.
Ayy fellow bro who plays CoD Ghosts on PS3
I play WaW. If you have that, we can play. My psn is M00SE_H0USE
i'm playing it too on ps3
Picked up a backwards compatibility PS3 for £20 from FB market local listing! The person had no idea and it hadn't been touched in years. Goes amazing with my PS5 and PC. I also brought a memory card adapter from a carboot for £1 years ago. It's been sitting in a draw, might look into selling it!
The best PlayStation setup! I did a similar thing with a Series X and 360. There are around 70 OG Xbox titles on the Series X. Half the OG Xbox library working on the 360, and then using the Series X dev mode to fill in gaps for multiplats that were released on PS2 and GameCube.
Thank god I still have my fat BC PS3. It's the first console I bought with my own money as opposed to receiving it as a gift, etc.
I have my PS2 hooked up to a Samsung plasma tv with component cables at 4:3 aspect ratio and the games looks pretty damn good, although I have nothing to compare to since I can't remember what games looked like on a CRT back in 2001. I am considering buying a back compat PS3 for my PS2 game but one in good condition goes for 250-300 which seems steep unless the quality is much better than my component setup, and I don't think that is the case.
Ah snap, got some Ryan Little playing. Great choice my dude.
Well kept Phat PS3's are beautiful in person. Glad I now own a BC one.
I just built my dream TV set up and I have a nice spot opp. my PS5, ready for My PS3 to come out of the basement. So pumped to get those classics back. GodHand anyone?
The yellow light of death is interesting as with all the PS3s I got over the years, there's only one that I bought from another person (the rest were bought at stores) and that's the only one that I've had the yellow light of death happen. Every other PS3 I got worked fine for years. I even have the E01 80GB backwards compatible PS3 but unfortunately with the PS2 games I do want to use with it, it doesn't 100% work properly so I'm just using it as a normal PS3 as I have a PS1 and a PS2 for those libraries.
This is actually brilliant
I have the 60GB PS3 beast. I am the original buyer. And the system is every bit my favorite system. Having said that, with the overheating YLOD I have to baby it. I have plugged in a 4 unit fan on the front USB plate. And it is elevated and sits by itself for lots of ventilation. I still play it regularly. Having said that, I stress every time I play it.
I have had that memory card adopter laying around for years. Had no idea it was worth so much today.
I think that people don't really look back towards older consoles is because it has older game mechanics, new consoles don't only evolve in graphics, they evolve in mechanics, responsiveness, fluidity, synergy, and in term, quality of ease.
It’s true, but if you used to play it then it’s easier to come

Me with a super slim:
Oh okay.
That's my setup!! And I love it.
This is pretty much what I’m going to do, but I have the ffxiii ps3 so I can’t part with it. I just keep a ps2 slim since it doesn’t take much space. Ps2, ps3, and ps5 is what I’m going with. Plus I get to hear that sweet ps2 startup sound 👌
Holy shit the capacitors are the issue? I might start looking into digging out my old fat ps3 that got ylod'ed and maybe fixing it up eventually
It seems to be a 50% chance of being the capacitors, especially on very early fat ps3s. I tried replacing them on my late L01 fat ps3 and it didn't work. And before you say its my soldering, its not. I have redone the solder multiple times with no luck so far.
Yeah I think I’m going to get one of the old backwards compatible ones, I have some old PS2 games that I wanna play in HD
Obviously after replacing thermal paste under the IHS on both the Cell and RSX replacing the NEC TOKIN capacitor is often a fix.
It's unlikely reball/reflow etc fixes these fat PS3s permanently. After doing all that most of the time people seem to report they work. CPU and GPU dies in general are pretty hardy and seem to last forever most people think them dying is the issue despite the heat these old fats put out it's more than likely to be another part which has failed.
@@rockl79 put it in the oven to reflow
@@rockl79 how many capacitor did replaced?
The PS3 is so great still to this day it's probably my personal favorite system!
Nintendo Switch is better
@@unicorntomboy9736 true but ps3 is more nostalgic as its a gen older than switch
@@unicorntomboy9736 dude you don't need to tell people about switch, they know. What makes you say it's outright "better" when the PS3 has 3 generations of fantastic games? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
I did appreciate owning them but honestly I did make the switch to PCSX2 and RPCS3. I backed up every game I owned. I genuinely enjoyed them for the time
Love your video
I still have my ps1, ps2, ps3 and my ps4 installed and ready to play on my TV
PS2 and 3 play PS1 so unless you have a modded one or are just a huge fan of the O.G playstation you can probably pack that one up and set it in storage.
The only problem with the backwards compatible ps3s is that the rsx is still very prone to dying. But there is a method that could become avaliable to people with BGA skills to replace the gpu with a more efficient one from the ps3 slim.
any updates on this?
@@Remspamton the rsx can be swapped for one thats from a slim system. cell can't be swapped but the chances of the cell failing have been found to be negligible. Also the nec tokins aren't prone to failure and can actually last 29 years
@@PatSmashYT This is assuming your RSX needs to be swapped, they aren't as unreliable as people claim they are.
Thanks for the video👍. I have two ps3. But none of them are backwards. But I have contact the man i sold my first ps3 to who could play ps1,2 and 3 games. And he will sell it cheap back to me this week:) So now I have one ps1, two ps2, 3 ps3, 1 ps4pro and a ps5😜
Just bought a cecha01 backwards compat ps3 on ebay that's been delidded and has the 19 blade fan and power supply mod. Really hope it works well but super excited!
