It's cool to see the massive progress being made with PS3 emulation, even if it's still years from being as good as something like Wii U emulation (CEMU is soooo good). And one of the best part of emulation is that assuming the game is one that actually works well, it's a better experience than native hardware. You could run the game at 9 times the resolution and have a crystal clear experience.
I have to agree with you Ryan. Having a CECHA01 PS3 is so worth it. The machine is a beast and a beautiful design also. I can't wait till I can pickup a PS5 disc edition
Buyers should ALWAYS check though. There NEEDS to be 4 usb ports on the front. That's the main and obvious indicator that it's a ps2 compatible model. There are versions with only 2 usb ports that DO NOT support ps2 backwards compat.
This is exactly why I've never gotten rid of my CECHA01. Still have it and managed to get a PS5 disc in early December to make sure I can still play my disc PS4 games. I'm all set.
Do you take any extra measures to protect the PS3 from overheating and getting YLOD? I used to have an early 80GB model CECHE01 PS3 and it eventually got YLOD after a few years. I was thinking of getting an early model again but I’m worried about reliability. Also did you upgrade the HDD?

27 years of games is pretty good he's right guys having just 2 consoles to play that many games is a blessing. The PS1,PS2,and PS3 have many hidden gems that will be kept buried because of no full BC on PS5.
Amazing! This is exactly what I did last year and I don't regret it! I am French so the only PS3 BC here is the 60GB PAL model, a few PS2 games have issues but the majority works perfectly so that's really fun to rediscover great games of my childhood and even new ones 20 years later! If you own a capable PC, PS2/PS3 emulators are great option as well. PS3 compability isn't perfect but when it works you can often boost both resolution and framerate.
For everybody reading this now and in the future, the NEC TOKIN capacitors are NOT the actual leading cause of death for backwards compatible PS3s. It's more often the defective 90nm GPU, which can be replaced thanks to the Frankenstein mod. Just wanted to clear up that outdated misinformation.
Thank you for the vid, Ryan! I wasn't aware that they figured out the YLOD cause and can now perminantly fix it. One thing you forgot to mention is the fact that Fat PS3 test kits are region free for PS1 and PS2 games. They're hard to find, but it is possible to get games working from other regions on them. They also let you output all games at 1080p. I think you can't connect to PSN on them, but I may be wrong. Jailbreaking is another thing worth bringing up as you can play games that aren't even on the PSN store anymore. Anyways, thanks for the tips. I'm going to see if I can get someone to fix my PS3 now!
Fun fact, I have both the 80gb soft emulation machine and the 20gb hard emulation machine, and the 80gb soft emulation displays ps2 games with a noticeably better/cleaner image, with richer colors on top of that. It’s like, actually a significant difference, and I was considering tweeting images of this out to you sometime Ryan. You’ll have to take my word for it for now, but it’s 100% something to look into if you have the ability to test this yourself. I was curious and did a comparison, completely took me by surprise. It’s a shame it is slightly less compatible.
@@unicorntomboy9736 dude you don't need to tell people about switch, they know. What makes you say it's outright "better" when the PS3 has 3 generations of fantastic games? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Exactly the set-up that I have. I have a backwards compatible PS3 with a 2Tb hard drive installed, and a PS5 with a 5Tb external HDD for my PS4 games. Perfection.
This is what I say to people a lot too. I have the entire Need for Speed collection on PlayStation and this was the whole reason I went out to find an original PS3. It was also pretty cool to me that he used a Need for Speed PS2 disc to showcase the backwards compatibility. Luckily where I live there is a store that sells retro games and consoles called Vintage Stock for decent prices. Originally I was going to try and find one online but the prices were ridiculous. I managed to find one in my local store (and they are very rare) and bought it on the spot. It was a 60 GB model. A few months later I was visiting my Grandma out of state and I brought the PS3. I told her that I was now looking for the memory card adaptor. Well there was a little mom and pop shop down the road that sold retro games like vintage stock does, and they actually had one. So my grandma and I went down there and they sold it for only $20. I also managed to snag a PS5 from Vintage Stock. So I can play every Need for Speed game with only 2 PlayStations. I even made a shelf to display all the games and it looks amazing. I got lucky being able to find all of these things IN STORE, especially since I hate ordering online (I've always had a bad experience ordering online). The OG PS3 is amazing, it took the place for my favorite PlayStation, which was the PS2 before. Sadly though Need for Speed (2015) on the PS4 does get the warning message on PS5 that it may not play correctly, and it doesn't. Multiplayer messes up as other players don't show up in the correct places and the AI acts weird. But at this point the only PlayStation I don't have is a PS1, so I've wondered if I should just get one for collection purposes. Vintage stock sells them for only $50. And one last thing about my PS3, it has the COD WaW skin on it. Kinda wish it had the OG black design to match the rest of my PlayStations, which are all OG black models (except for the PS5 of course, that's white).
What, no way, I would pay big bucks for that OG backwards compatible model... CoD: W@W is my favorite Call of Duty hands down and I had no idea the game had its own PS3 design... I'm looking this up now xD
This is one of my favorite videos of yours yet! It's fun to learn that I'm not the only one so deep in PlayStation nerdom that I have the memory card adapter and am aware of the recent discovery of the true cause of YLOD. My 60gb launch PS3 succumbed to YLOD back in 2012 and it was devastating; I lost all my saves since launch in 2006. I tried everything to revive it including sending it out to a repair company. All unsuccessful. I finally gave up and tearfully traded it +$100 to Sony for a Slim model + a copy of Twisted Metal. I can't say I regret it because it has been serving me well ever since. Plus, I love its design. The good news is that I managed to get my hands on a CECHE (Motorstorm) model a few years back. It's a bit banged up but it works. I'd like to refurbished it someday to get it looking like new. It's my dualshock 3s that are the real problem now. But the truth is I have no use for PS2 emulation since all the titles I would ever want to play have been remastered for PS3. And I find it hard to play games from that era. Even PS3 games are starting to be uneasy on the eyes. I would always prefer to pay for a good remaster than have regular backwards compatibility. That's why I try to rebuy my library on PC. I just wish Sony would remaster the Resistance trilogy already (Killzone and infamous too).
I think that people don't really look back towards older consoles is because it has older game mechanics, new consoles don't only evolve in graphics, they evolve in mechanics, responsiveness, fluidity, synergy, and in term, quality of ease.
For me personally, most of my favorite PS2 games have been remastered for PS3/4. The final fantasy games, kingdom hearts, devil May cry, resident evil, god of war, shadow of the colossus, Okami, and uncharted. At this point I think the only ps2 game missing an HD remaster that I really want is dragon quest viii.
@@dericjames2018 do you mean the original? If so then you’re correct, but it can at least be played on all PS3 models. There was a collection for the PS3 that I think had 2-4 but I heard it wasn’t a great version of those games.

It seems to be a 50% chance of being the capacitors, especially on very early fat ps3s. I tried replacing them on my late L01 fat ps3 and it didn't work. And before you say its my soldering, its not. I have redone the solder multiple times with no luck so far.
Obviously after replacing thermal paste under the IHS on both the Cell and RSX replacing the NEC TOKIN capacitor is often a fix. It's unlikely reball/reflow etc fixes these fat PS3s permanently. After doing all that most of the time people seem to report they work. CPU and GPU dies in general are pretty hardy and seem to last forever most people think them dying is the issue despite the heat these old fats put out it's more than likely to be another part which has failed.
PS2 Slims are like $20-40 if people really want to play PS1/2 games and there are tons of options with hdmi converters and upscalers if the best picture quality is what you are after. Also emulation. You can mod a non-BC PS3 to run PS2 with emulation.
Regardless of the PS3 model you own, you should absolutely keep it around. Even non-backwards compatible consoles can play PS2 discs now with a few workarounds made possible by HEN and it's compatible with the vast majority of the console's library. Sony clearly isn't going to make disc-based backwards compatibility happen on the PS5 at this point so keeping a PS3 around if you want to play your old discs through an HDMI display is essential.
This is pretty much my exact setup. I have both my 80gb PS3 and my Standard PS5 (not sure what to call it) in the middle of my entertainment center! But I also have my PS2 out as well (with component cables to my Sony 4k Bravia, which has a great picture) because it's my favorite console and is native hardware!
Ps3 plays Ps2 with native hardware too. The 60gb have a full ps2 hardware integrated in it, but not the later version, some are half hardware and some are full emulation.
Agreed, this is a good compromise, but software backward compatibility is by far the best. MSFT is doing resolution upgrades with their older titles, which brings a whole new level of greatness to them...especially the older games which everyone only played on old CRT TVs. Having those old games in modern resolutions is awesome!
I did appreciate owning them but honestly I did make the switch to PCSX2 and RPCS3. I backed up every game I owned. I genuinely enjoyed them for the time
This is exactly what I've done! Sometime before the PS5 released, I got myself a used phat PS3 (PAL release version, though), with this exact idea in mind: being able to play pretty much everything from PS1 to PS5 in one room! Also, in case you guys don't have any info on the serial number of a PS3 you might be tempted to buy, check the number of USB ports in the front. The backwards compatible PS3 all have 4 USB front slots!
@@wolfbrigade8042 the first PS3 version released in PAL markets was semi-backwards compatible, in which it wasn't fully hardware emulated like the original NTSC release but rather 50/50 hardware and software emulated, thus making several games less compatible in PAL regions (with some not running at all). As far as I know, it was one of the attempts to lower the console manufacture and selling prices
The only problem with the backwards compatible ps3s is that the rsx is still very prone to dying. But there is a method that could become avaliable to people with BGA skills to replace the gpu with a more efficient one from the ps3 slim.
@@Remspamton the rsx can be swapped for one thats from a slim system. cell can't be swapped but the chances of the cell failing have been found to be negligible. Also the nec tokins aren't prone to failure and can actually last 29 years

Hi, you know what would be an amazing and helpful video alongside this one... third-party reliable ps3 controllers. I know you made a video about dual sense working on ps3, but, well not everybody has a ps5 nowadays.
I did exactly this. Once Sony confirmed no PS1-3 support on PS5, I got rid of my PS2 slim and PS3 Super Slim and got a BC one. Fewer things plugged in, the better.
The yellow light of death is interesting as with all the PS3s I got over the years, there's only one that I bought from another person (the rest were bought at stores) and that's the only one that I've had the yellow light of death happen. Every other PS3 I got worked fine for years. I even have the E01 80GB backwards compatible PS3 but unfortunately with the PS2 games I do want to use with it, it doesn't 100% work properly so I'm just using it as a normal PS3 as I have a PS1 and a PS2 for those libraries.
I have my PS2 hooked up to a Samsung plasma tv with component cables at 4:3 aspect ratio and the games looks pretty damn good, although I have nothing to compare to since I can't remember what games looked like on a CRT back in 2001. I am considering buying a back compat PS3 for my PS2 game but one in good condition goes for 250-300 which seems steep unless the quality is much better than my component setup, and I don't think that is the case.
The best PlayStation setup! I did a similar thing with a Series X and 360. There are around 70 OG Xbox titles on the Series X. Half the OG Xbox library working on the 360, and then using the Series X dev mode to fill in gaps for multiplats that were released on PS2 and GameCube.
I got my backwards compatible PS3 while Vacationing in Florida last year for 75.00 dollars at a pawn shop. It had cost me 40 to mail it home. It’s been worth every penny.
Guy at work gave me his A01 for free. Looks like it's been through hell but it still works. Good to hear about the capacitor swap being viable. I'll play it until it fails and then I'll try to find someone who can replace them for me.
@@pongchannel. I plan to but I wanna replace the thermal paste and give it a deep clean inside but I gotta get the security bit and good paste first before I buckle down to really use it.
personally, i would just go with an OG ps2 and mod it with free mcboot to run every ps2 rom. they are cheap, easy to find and very reliable. i see no reason to bother with any other option at this point.
This, I don't know how anyone could recommend the BC Fat PS3 models with the general board failures, unreliable, and how much of a pain in the ass they are to open up and work on. Why pay $150-200 more than a PS3 slim or super slim when you can just buy a freaking PS2 (Fat is easier to mod over slim) for $50 all day long- usually with memory cards, controllers, and games.
@@chriswiandt4907 agreed. the ONLY benefit the b/c ps3's have is that they will upscale ps2 games to an hdtv reasonably well, whereas with a fat ps2, you will need to use an upconverter solution (which can be expensive) if you want to improve the image quality on a modern tv. otherwise it will look blurry as hell. i still use a CRT with my legacy systems so i don't have to worry about this issue but i realize this might not be an option for everyone. if you can find a 14" or 20" CRT, which don't take up too much space and are relatively easy to carry, it is well worth it. lately i have been gaming on a 9" PVM and while it looked small initially, it really isn't too bad and legacy games look incredible on it since the smaller screen hides the jagged edges and aliasing very well.
@@mogwai_for_sale Nope, I got the slim ps2 hooked up via component cables on my hdtv and it looks crisp as hell on a 43". Definitely not blurry. Maybe not 100% perfect like on crt but pretty damn close as I'm not complaining. And I'm usually so picky when it comes to image quality.
Not that I recommend doing this, but if you Jailbreak your PS3 Slim or install a HAN on your super slim you can also play some PS1, PS2 and PSP titles through RetroArch, which makes it even more backwards compatible.
I have the 60GB PS3 beast. I am the original buyer. And the system is every bit my favorite system. Having said that, with the overheating YLOD I have to baby it. I have plugged in a 4 unit fan on the front USB plate. And it is elevated and sits by itself for lots of ventilation. I still play it regularly. Having said that, I stress every time I play it. I have had that memory card adopter laying around for years. Had no idea it was worth so much today.
Please do a proper updated in-depth video on that PS3 early model YOLD issue. It's not just the capacitors. There is an issue with the 80nm RSX. The current best solution to that is to mod the said PS3 with an 40nm RSX from one of the newer models. It's expensive, but it works.
Definitely fucking pricey, l’ve had mine Frankie’d for about 10 days now and it’s been working great. It’s been turned on and off enough to be cycled and to know if something went wrong and it’s been great. I still gotta use it for a while longer to come to my own conclusions on Frankie’s (l have mine on OFW so l can’t monitor temps) but l think it’s the main solution for YLOD plus the time used for it is FAR from needing to worry about the caps.
I bought an as is ps3 e01 off of ebay for 18 bucks with intent to fix it. Turns out, it was an a01 and just needed to be booted in safe mode for resolution settings. The only thing that didn't work was the disc drive! 40 bucks later and I swapped the fan for more blades, dd works just fine and now it stands next to my ps5 :) Keep up the great ps3 content! Love these videos!
Good luck getting one they are going for an absurd amount of money now. You'd be better off buying a ps3 slim and just downloading any ps2 classics you want to play
Good point about the region lock on the PS3's. I'm in the UK and bought the backwards compatible 2 years back and and still love it...a few weeks ago another appeared on FB Marketplace and they were looking for offers...I got it for £15 - (about $20 USA). It didn't come with a power supply or controller but luckily I have spares...anyway after plugging it in and trying several games....I found out that it was the North American model so it's of no use to me now. I would sell it as a stand alone unit but I reckon the shipping to the USA from the UK would be a small fortune due to the weight of it. Keep up the great video's. ;o)
It is an ideal setup but don't fret over HAVING to have the BC PS3. PS2 is still best way to play PS2 and the amount of money you save on a slim PS3 you could have a refurbished like new PS2 with a 2TB HDD with over 600+ games on it.
Yes of course, but there are still certain draws to it, for me is the wireless controller, original hardware can never have that. And also the fact that its all playable on one console to just pick up and play. Its awesome, homebrew it and you get even more games to play
Unless you go the full length of preserving your fat PS3, I'd say it's definitely not worth going after. Without the full fix, these things are guaranteed to die.
This. If you want a PS3, go with a slim or super slim (both play PS1) and either mod your s/ss ps3 to add ps2 emulation or outright buy a Fat or Slim PS2 for dirt cheap. (Fat PS2 easier to mod)
These things can be fairly reliable as long as you keep them cool. These launch ps3s were designed to be silent out of the box, running at temps of +80°C, which is just terrible and would ruin the board over prolonged periods of time... If you jailbreak the ps3 or install a fan mod the run the ps3 below 65°C it should last you who knows how long

Your the best. I did not know about the PS3 memory card adapter, buying one now. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s true, but if you used to play it then it’s easier to come

It seems to be a 50% chance of being the capacitors, especially on very early fat ps3s. I tried replacing them on my late L01 fat ps3 and it didn't work. And before you say its my soldering, its not. I have redone the solder multiple times with no luck so far.
Yeah I think I’m going to get one of the old backwards compatible ones, I have some old PS2 games that I wanna play in HD
Obviously after replacing thermal paste under the IHS on both the Cell and RSX replacing the NEC TOKIN capacitor is often a fix.
It's unlikely reball/reflow etc fixes these fat PS3s permanently. After doing all that most of the time people seem to report they work.

Or just buying a PS2 (Fat or slim) for less than $50 for natively playing PS2 if your not into modding to add emulation to a non-BC PS3.
@@chriswiandt4907 PlayStation 2s are archaic antiques. Where can you even find a decades old console nowadays?

I just want to play Black Ops 2 on PS5 😔
Same
Nope! Fuck you give me money!
I have finally mastered the matrix, first time seeing his video posted at 1 minute lol
Now it's time to break out of it!
@@ErnestSheptalo hell no where else am I going to be like superman
I just got my PS5 and I love it I still play on my PS3 from time to time I have a super slim PS3
Keep up the great video's. ;o)
Man why are you trying to make prices go up? There’s enough scalpers as it is haha
Especially on the PS3
@VerdeSauce Really? Where could i get one?
@VerdeSauce that specific model tho
@VerdeSauce ok thanks!
I wish I would have bought a fat model a long time ago, didn't realize the prices are rising. Good thing I have a PS2
If you jailbreak the ps3 or install a fan mod the run the ps3 below 65°C it should last you who knows how long
@@DeadlyHellhound Funnily enough I do just that, as a bonus, get yourself a Japanese launch model fan which has 19 blades instead of the normal 15/17 of western models.
@@InputArchive I think fans were just based off the factory they were made, I’ve seen all kinds of fan models from the same western ps3 models.
Honestly I prefer the 15 blade fans myself, I find the 19 blade fans to be too loud imo
A detail that I guess just some people noticed, you put the music name, thank you for that i always try to search the musics that you put in your video
I LOVE that you ussd NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND as an example of backwards compatibility one the ps3. My favorite racing game in my childhood. Automatic like 👍 button smash.
PS3 BC for me is 1 of the must beautifull consoles...
I've had my back compatible ps3 for a few years, great for ps2 with HDMI, been a little worried about over using it though because of how old it's getting. I've been thinking of replacing the thermal paste to increase it's longevity but it's never been opened before so I'm torn. Thoughts on if i should replace thermal paste? if so any recommended brands?
I am also like you I want to change the thermal paste in the ps3 I bought a ps3 in 2010 and I did not change the thermal paste and I had some delays, chopping and hanging while playing
We should be able to play ps2 and ps3 games on a fucking ps5💀💀💀
ps3 emulation is very difficult because of the cell broadband engine, so to play ps3 games on ps5 sony would have to put the ps3 cpu on the ps5s motherboard which would be very inconvenient, expensive and would have your ps5 need a lot more power
Just picked up my 17th-ever PS3 last week! A one-owner CECH-B01 with the warranty seal still intact. Just cracked it open and applied new Artic MX4 thermal paste. Searched 2 years for this unit! 🤩🔥
exactly what i was thinking. Wishing i still had my ps3
Yes but... Where do you find a backward compatible ps3 right now? 🤷♂️
Online?
@@glasgowblackchigowski6117 I know but the price is too high 🙄
