It's especially sketchy when you know that they encourage people to repair their consoles themselves before sending them back, it's an actual scam. There was another TH-camr who emailed them and they requested he try and fix the problem himself before returning it. But that would involve removing the stickers, making the warranty null and void. They're actual criminals.
Well they can't uphold that statement in the US because opening up your device does not void your warrenty. They're just saying that to make people think they can't open them when they are well within their own rights to inspect the inside themselves.

I actually don’t think it is legal for them to void a warranty because you opened the console. Should be part of the consumer protection act or something similar to that name. I wonder if they could face repercussions for suggesting that they normally wouldn’t honor voiding the warranty, or if they’d only get in trouble if they actually refused you due to a “voided” warranty.

So long as the console isn't damaged(like the machinations, not cosmetically) the console is still under warranty, in fact the FTC told off the major 3 companies that its illegal to void a console thats only been opened.

Just a note, opening a console does not void the warranty by US law. There have been many court cases over this matter and the company has lost every single time. The issue is no one is going to take someone to court for something as small as a ps3. The people who have are generally through class actions but, they tend to go after the manufacturers who have more money as opposed to relatively small 3rd party resellers. It's not worth the court fees.

This exact situation happened to me. I ordered a “refurbished” Nintendo GameCube from DKOldies last December. It looked clean for the most part, but it wouldn’t read discs. I contacted them and they shipped me a replacement one. The replacement one was dirty as all hell and, guess what, it wouldn’t read discs either. I will not be ordering from them again.
For future reference, the disc read issue can be fixed very easily with few tools. You'll need: Game Bit screwdriver Phillips head screwdriver Multimeter Take out the 4 game bit screws on the bottom in the corners, then turn the system back over. Put your hands on the sides, pull the shell off, and put it aside. On the back plate where the power and output cables are, there are two clips, one on each side. Gently push the clips back and the plate will come off. Now do the same for the front where the controllers connect, but remove the ribbon connector from between the memory card ports. (BE AWARE: The ribbon cable is soldered to the front plate board, don't try to pull the top side off.) Now, there are 12 screws around the disk drive, two of them hold the fan, and two are under the fan. The fan can stay connected but you can pull the connector if you want. Remove these screws. There are two brackets on top of the memory card slots held in with two screws each. Remove both and set aside. Now, pick up the disc drive and flip it. There is a metal plate held in by 7(?) screws, remove this plate and set aside. This is the disc drive board. Close to one side, you will see a component that looks like a black square with a metal circle in it, and on that circle is a Phillips head pattern. This is the laser potentiometer. It has three legs that connect to the board, and you should orient the board so that the single leg is on the left. Now set your multimeter to Resistance (Ohms, Ω) and put one lead on the left leg, and the other on the bottom right. Most likely this will not be correct. Take the Phillips head screwdriver and turn the potentiometer very slightly about ⅛ of a turn, then read it out again, it should be between 200-400 Ohms, but this might vary depending on your console. Once you have it in that range (I suggest somewhere in the middle), you can reassemble the console up to before you put the shell on, put a game in, and hold the double switch on the back right side of the console. Power it on and see if the disc will read. If not, keep adjusting the potentiometer. I hope this helps, whether you specifically or anyone else. While it's open you can also replace your CMOS battery on the controller port board but this requires a soldering iron and a new battery.

This isn't a joke anymore, further *legal* action(s) should be taken against them. PS: Based on my experience, they basically use a more powerful blower, which removed some dust bunnies, but not actual dust powder, hence the situation inside your console. Furthermore, as I have previous working experience on an IT company, improper air ventilation and cooling for the PSU/CPU is a potential *fire hazard* Same thing goes for its 15+ years old bulged capacitors and resistors. I'm pretty sure there's more than a handful of excellent lawyers out there, readily to take those *criminals* into court. You fellows should be in touch in order to press that as a group, best of luck!

Just recently got hired as a SGA for Gamestop (my store is typically better at customer service in our region, so I will sound somewhat biased atm) and from what I can tell, the company really isn't doomed, but digital purchases on console eshops are definitely lowering the sale counts. Gamestop is most likely going to become the go to for budget-shopping parents and people who simply prefer physical games. Other than that, yeah, the glory years are quite behind the company.
They don't want you opening it so you don't find out how they don't refurbish anything. So they threaten to void warranty if you do. Great business practices.
Its truly night and day when your console isnt really refurbished. I recently got a cechA01 ps3 and played it for a few days before i opened it up to change thermal pads, clean, and repaste- and the sheer noise difference is insane. Definitely a must on these older systems
@@monstertheatergames I hate to point out the obvious, but the "tested" and "cleaned" text on the device listing page _strongly_ suggests these items will be both tested and cleaned. I can easily understand why buyers might expect their top-dollar purchases be both tested and cleaned. I know I would expect that, especially since it was specifically mentioned on the website on the product page, and therefore legally-binding under consumer protection laws.

I was curious how they were going to handle the warranty. Obviously they knew they were in the wrong and needed to replace it. Unfortunately, the replacement was terrible even after instructing somebody in their company to clean it. Are you going to return both?
There must be retro sellers out there actually refurbishing they’re consoles. It’s just a shame that this can’t be common practice considering how much someone might be paying for the service. Just did tear downs on my ps4 pro and my buddies down to the thermal paste and fans and in a professionals hands it’s gotta be way faster than mine which didn’t take very long to begin with. To think someone might by refurbished only to have they’re console fail in the near future is sad all in all.

They didn't do any better. They just got a PS3 that had less dust and sent it to him. They did the same amount of work but instead of recieving the worst of the dusty consoles he got one with less dust. If they actually did their job they'd actually fully open them.

They are not cheaper then other retailers. You are better off buying else where for cheaper. I will never defend a company with bad business practices.
The thing that bothers me about DKOldies is that they make entrepreneurship look bad. The most important thing is to do right by your customers in any business and there are many hard working people that do. Because bad actors like them get attention (as they should), it can create skepticism about other small businesses which is unfortunate.

Yeah I don't think dkoldies understands how running a business works. You can't say you are refurbishing something, then say oh it's only warranted if you don't check that we did/didn't do that. If someone wants to sue or class action, they would lose in a heartbeat.

only since 1975 :P Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the Feds mandated that you can open your electronics without voiding the warranty, regardless of what the language of your warranty says.
See the issue is that actual refurbishment (thermal paste replacement) is the console lasts longer and the same customers won’t need to go back to buy more.

I refurbished my own PS3 console’s and backwards compatible and I bought them 60-90$ I feel sorry for the people that buy 300-400$ for it on a fake " refurbished "console 😂

I bought my PS3 in the same price range between 60-90 on ebay but here its a backward compatible PS3 and the price is very high everywhere not only on dkoldies.
Just a thought; I cleaned an extremely dirty ps3 one time, then played games for about 5 hours. When my girlfriend got home, I wanted to show her how clean the console was and opened it back up to find dust patterns that looked exactly like the one in this video, even the same light grayish color.

I actually just picked up a PS3 console from a Goodwill that I am going to test and clean up for resale. I already have thermal paste and meters set to do a full refurbishment. I already feel like I am going to do 100x more work on it than DKOldies ever would.
The worst thing about the fact they're selling backwards compatible PS3s is that PS3s with 90nm RSXs are ticking time bombs because of the BGA cracking issue so there's gonna be someone for sure buying one from them for an exorbitant price and having it kick the can not that long later because of it. And I guess this isn't something they can control but there's gonna be a lot of unware buyers out there...
The Warranty sticker they put is on the console is illegal in the states. So them telling you that opening it up would void it is also illegal. Look it up yourself and you will see. You can also report the company for doing it.

My local game store sells old consoles like this properly refurbished and I did the same thing you did. Opened it and checked, BUT they actually tell you that it was refurbished or if they just got it and are re-selling and the price does change before and after it’s refurbished, they let you know and the price changes on the console you buy. If anyone is curious the store is called “Level 7”, I’ve only seen them here in Colorado( if you’re in Las Vegas, NV. I recommend “WII play games”).
Almost positive they need some sort of paperwork indicating they can mark void warranties on consumer products, and im not too sure 2nd hand "refurbishments" qualify for voidable warranty status.

The only thing I've ever ordered from DK is the power brick and tv connection for a N64. I would never pay good money for a super old console when I can order parts to repair the ones I find in the dump. Plus working on consoles is easy and fun. The most frustrating part of working on consoles is making sure you have the right tools and parts but there are toolkits you can order that have everything you need in em. Save a few bucks and rebuild your own consoles and few for your friends.

Just a note, opening a console does not void the warranty by US law. There have been many court cases over this matter and the company has lost every single time. The issue is no one is going to take someone to court for something as small as a ps3. The people who have are generally through class actions but, they tend to go after the manufacturers who have more money as opposed to relatively small 3rd party resellers. It's not worth the court fees.
I find it sad how they won’t take any accountability for their shady business practices. As well as telling you opening the console voids the warranty which is now illegal to do according to US law.
That law was made specifically to target new merchandise. (You buy a PS5 brand new at best buy, open it and Sony can't deny a warranty) does it cover "refurbished" products as well?

Because the average consumer who would actually buy a console from dk oldies likely wouldn’t take the console apart. Especially those who would have the money need to sue dk oldies lol they’ll just buy another one
They had a chance to redeem themselves, just to screw it up once again.
This exact situation happened to me. I ordered a “refurbished” Nintendo GameCube from DKOldies last December. It looked clean for the most part, but it wouldn’t read discs. I contacted them and they shipped me a replacement one. The replacement one was dirty as all hell and, guess what, it wouldn’t read discs either. I will not be ordering from them again.
For future reference, the disc read issue can be fixed very easily with few tools.
You'll need:
Game Bit screwdriver
Phillips head screwdriver
Multimeter
Take out the 4 game bit screws on the bottom in the corners, then turn the system back over. Put your hands on the sides, pull the shell off, and put it aside. On the back plate where the power and output cables are, there are two clips, one on each side. Gently push the clips back and the plate will come off. Now do the same for the front where the controllers connect, but remove the ribbon connector from between the memory card ports. (BE AWARE: The ribbon cable is soldered to the front plate board, don't try to pull the top side off.)
Now, there are 12 screws around the disk drive, two of them hold the fan, and two are under the fan. The fan can stay connected but you can pull the connector if you want. Remove these screws. There are two brackets on top of the memory card slots held in with two screws each. Remove both and set aside.
Now, pick up the disc drive and flip it. There is a metal plate held in by 7(?) screws, remove this plate and set aside.
This is the disc drive board. Close to one side, you will see a component that looks like a black square with a metal circle in it, and on that circle is a Phillips head pattern. This is the laser potentiometer. It has three legs that connect to the board, and you should orient the board so that the single leg is on the left. Now set your multimeter to Resistance (Ohms, Ω) and put one lead on the left leg, and the other on the bottom right. Most likely this will not be correct. Take the Phillips head screwdriver and turn the potentiometer very slightly about ⅛ of a turn, then read it out again, it should be between 200-400 Ohms, but this might vary depending on your console. Once you have it in that range (I suggest somewhere in the middle), you can reassemble the console up to before you put the shell on, put a game in, and hold the double switch on the back right side of the console. Power it on and see if the disc will read. If not, keep adjusting the potentiometer.

While it's open you can also replace your CMOS battery on the controller port board but this requires a soldering iron and a new battery.

PS: Based on my experience, they basically use a more powerful blower, which removed some dust bunnies, but not actual dust powder, hence the situation inside your console.
Furthermore, as I have previous working experience on an IT company, improper air ventilation and cooling for the PSU/CPU is a potential *fire hazard*
Same thing goes for its 15+ years old bulged capacitors and resistors.
I'm pretty sure there's more than a handful of excellent lawyers out there, readily to take those *criminals* into court. You fellows should be in touch in order to press that as a group, best of luck!
I just made a comment about that....someone should do a class action lawsuit and get a bunch of people together and sue them. This is going too far and has been going on for quite awhile now.

Just recently got hired as a SGA for Gamestop (my store is typically better at customer service in our region, so I will sound somewhat biased atm) and from what I can tell, the company really isn't doomed, but digital purchases on console eshops are definitely lowering the sale counts. Gamestop is most likely going to become the go to for budget-shopping parents and people who simply prefer physical games. Other than that, yeah, the glory years are quite behind the company.
They don't want you opening it so you don't find out how they don't refurbish anything. So they threaten to void warranty if you do. Great business practices.

Its truly night and day when your console isnt really refurbished. I recently got a cechA01 ps3 and played it for a few days before i opened it up to change thermal pads, clean, and repaste- and the sheer noise difference is insane. Definitely a must on these older systems

I can easily understand why buyers might expect their top-dollar purchases be both tested and cleaned. I know I would expect that, especially since it was specifically mentioned on the website on the product page, and therefore legally-binding under consumer protection laws.

I was curious how they were going to handle the warranty. Obviously they knew they were in the wrong and needed to replace it. Unfortunately, the replacement was terrible even after instructing somebody in their company to clean it. Are you going to return both?

There must be retro sellers out there actually refurbishing they’re consoles. It’s just a shame that this can’t be common practice considering how much someone might be paying for the service. Just did tear downs on my ps4 pro and my buddies down to the thermal paste and fans and in a professionals hands it’s gotta be way faster than mine which didn’t take very long to begin with. To think someone might by refurbished only to have they’re console fail in the near future is sad all in all.

They didn't do any better. They just got a PS3 that had less dust and sent it to him. They did the same amount of work but instead of recieving the worst of the dusty consoles he got one with less dust. If they actually did their job they'd actually fully open them.

The thing that bothers me about DKOldies is that they make entrepreneurship look bad. The most important thing is to do right by your customers in any business and there are many hard working people that do. Because bad actors like them get attention (as they should), it can create skepticism about other small businesses which is unfortunate.

Hey so funny thing about that thumb nail. In the US manufacturers can NO LONGER VOID ANY WARRANTY over a sticker being broken or removed. Right to repair has come a long way in protecting the consumer.

Yeah I don't think dkoldies understands how running a business works. You can't say you are refurbishing something, then say oh it's only warranted if you don't check that we did/didn't do that. If someone wants to sue or class action, they would lose in a heartbeat.
What sucks is that I feel like their business is thriving even more than before because of vids like these... You're doing good work here, but I can't help but wonder if they're actually benefitting from the shame they SHOULD be feeling.

My only agreement against the dust inside is how long has that console been sitting on a shelf before it was shipped out? I would expect dust, the dirt however is unacceptable.

I remember a few years back with pc parts like graphics cards and stuff that warranty void stickers aren't legal anymore. Like you can open up your device because of right to repair and the company still has to offer warranty..

I refurbished my own PS3 console’s and backwards compatible and I bought them 60-90$ I feel sorry for the people that buy 300-400$ for it on a fake " refurbished "console 😂

Other resellers will see their prices and think that it's what games and consoles are actually worth and they will increase their prices.
I bought my PS3 in the same price range between 60-90 on ebay but here its a backward compatible PS3 and the price is very high everywhere not only on dkoldies.

Just a thought; I cleaned an extremely dirty ps3 one time, then played games for about 5 hours. When my girlfriend got home, I wanted to show her how clean the console was and opened it back up to find dust patterns that looked exactly like the one in this video, even the same light grayish color.

I actually just picked up a PS3 console from a Goodwill that I am going to test and clean up for resale. I already have thermal paste and meters set to do a full refurbishment. I already feel like I am going to do 100x more work on it than DKOldies ever would.

The worst thing about the fact they're selling backwards compatible PS3s is that PS3s with 90nm RSXs are ticking time bombs because of the BGA cracking issue so there's gonna be someone for sure buying one from them for an exorbitant price and having it kick the can not that long later because of it. The Warranty sticker they put is on the console is illegal in the states. So them telling you that opening it up would void it is also illegal. Look it up yourself and you will see. You can also report the company for doing it.

My local game store sells old consoles like this properly refurbished and I did the same thing you did. Opened it and checked, BUT they actually tell you that it was refurbished or if they just got it and are re-selling and the price does change before and after it’s refurbished, they let you know and the price changes on the console you buy. If anyone is curious the store is called “Level 7”, I’ve only seen them here in Colorado( if you’re in Las Vegas, NV. I recommend “WII play games”).

The only thing I've ever ordered from DK is the power brick and tv connection for a N64. I would never pay good money for a super old console when I can order parts to repair the ones I find in the dump. Plus working on consoles is easy and fun. The most frustrating part of working on consoles is making sure you have the right tools and parts but there are toolkits you can order that have everything you need in em. Save a few bucks and rebuild your own consoles and few for your friends.
I hope they get sued into oblivion and lose their ability to sell anything. They don’t deserve to be doing business like this. I hope you get a refund!
