  • I'm a big fan of buying stuff from eBay. This time, I decided to go for a premium console and bought an 80GB Backwards Compatible PS3! This is a legendary console because it's one of the only PS3 consoles than can play PS2 games. This console even game with the original box. Check out the video to see if I got my money's worth!

    Nice PS3 video and great job on it too! I still have a backwards compatible PS3 myself as well which is the original 60 GB model. I've had it now for over four years already since I got it off of Amazon back in 2018 and it still works fine so far too for the time being since I haven't had the YLOD or anything on it yet which is really great since I've been pretty lucky so far. I also like how you tested out both "Crash Bash" for PS1 and "Grand Theft Auto III" for PS2 on the backwards compatible PS3 in this video since those are also two of my favorite games. I even have "MotorStorm" for PS3 as well which is also one of my favorite PS3 games, and it was actually the very first PS3 game I ever played when I first got into the PS3 many years ago. In fact, I actually picked up the 80 GB MotorStorm bundle way back in 2008 which included the 80 GB PS3 itself which was also backwards compatible with PS2 games even though it ran on software emulation, plus the "MotorStorm" game itself which I still have. Unfortunately, though, my 80 GB PS3 stopped working many years ago since it wouldn't read any of the game discs that I would insert into the console even though it still powers on and off fine since it never got the YLOD. I now have two working PS3 systems so far which are the 60 GB backwards compatible model that I just got from Amazon back in 2018, and I also have an old 160 GB PS3 Slim model which I actually got way back in 2011, and I use that as my main PS3 even though it's not backwards compatible with PS2 game discs.

    They should add a firmware update to the PS5 that allows you to play all previous playstation games though emulation, OR they release a PS5 slim in the future, that has a chip that does emulation, the reason I say this is because your PS3 can do emulation via the emulation chip that it has, without it can't play PS2 games, and it plays PS2 games though that chip that it has.
    All PS3 models that had 20gb and 60gb hard-drive can play PS2 games natively because of the emotion engine chip, this is basically a PS2 chip baked inside the PS3.
    And all PS3 models can run PS1 games.

    • @nastysdsi
      @nastysdsi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      PS5 can't read CDs at all.
      Also, the CECHC is a 60 GB model that doesn't have the PS2 CPU and RAMBUS. All models can run PS2 games purely with software, but Sony restricted this emulator to PS2 Classics they sell digitally and you need CFW or HEN to use your own ISOs.
      Some PS1 games are not compatible.

    • @MrCaps-sq4bk
      @MrCaps-sq4bk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nastysdsi That's Interesting because I know that thanks to the emulation chip that these PS3 models have they can run 80% of PS2 games, and the earlier PS3 models have that emotion chip can run PS2 games 100%.
      The PS5 could run previous playstation games up to PS3, it's because the Blu-ray Drive and with a firmware update they could do it, that's a good point the CDs with PS5, what do you think about they putting backwards compatibility up to PS3?

    • @nastysdsi
      @nastysdsi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrCaps-sq4bk Definitely not 100%. 99.9%, maybe (I know there is at least 1 game that doesn't run), and some games probably have issues just like on later slims (which removed the SPU).
      The PS5 probably doesn't even have a CD laser. The PS4 did at least recognize PS3 discs. Still, they've already remastered or remade the best-selling games and there's no way they're putting a Cell and an RSX in a PS5.
      If someone finds an exploit to run Linux, it could probably play PS3 games with RPCS3, PS2 games with PCSX2, and PS1 games with PCSX or ePSXe.

    • @MrCaps-sq4bk
      @MrCaps-sq4bk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nastysdsi Ok, thanks! I thought it could do 100% backwards compatibility. I Feel like if they did, then the PS5 would be more expensive that it all ready is, like probably 100-200 dollars more then the normal PS5 is.

    I still have my PS3. I dug it out a few weeks ago after being in storage for the last 13 years! I have since then bought over 40 of the best rated PS3 games (from both the standpoint of graphical quality and from gameplay perspective) and also I have bought a few of the PS2 / PS1 games! Loving it! I have put a cheap 1tb SSD inside now to replace the 60Gb that was in there. I think I will take it apart and repaste the CPU/GPU to help with longevity. I am considering jailbreaking it so that I can copy all of the games to the SSD and not wear out the blueray drive (as that's a main component that's prone to fail over time). I think the one thing that's a little disappointing though is that most PS3 games are 720p or even lower. It looks rather jagged when displayed on my 1080p monitor. It has been so long since I used the console, I think I had nostalgic memories about how good the games looked. I guess I have been spoiled by PC gaming since then.

    Glad you have a great working PS3. I still have my PS3 (80 gig Backwards compatible PS1,2,3 from back in 2006) and it works beautifully still (knock on wood). Back in the day, these 80 gigs ran for 600$ new. I do believe I got mine before the "limited edition", but I would have loved to get this one because motor storm was the game to get back in the day, this game needs a remake for PS5 badly.
    Last but not least, and I'm not exactly 100% sure about this, but, Sony first made the PS3 with the built-in physical emulator chip to play PS1, PS2. After the console was out for a while, they decided to manufacture the PS3 to be backwards compatible but with software only. I heard this change was made as a way to kinda save money, and because the actual chip was hard to update the software with, because there were some issues playing some PS1, PS2 games that I do believe they fixed with an update. However, I was never quite able to play Hitman blood money with mine, it seemed to freeze all the time at a certain level, and so I never played it again, but still have it lol. Anyways, enjoy, it's a great system to have.

      Yea, PS3 at first had WHOLE PS2 crammed inside, on PCB. Literally. Next revisions had some parts of PS2 removed and those were emulated by software. Next, PS3s had PS2 compatibility removed by removing last bits of PS2 hardware. Putting PS2 HW inside was more convenient for Sony, as they did not want to do any SW PS2 emulation for some reason.
      PS1 compatibility is done by software emulation.

    You must be a millionaire you don’t care paying scalpers for a PS3 console if I were to buy one it would be Gamestop not a scalper the scalpers have taken over on ebay if you were buying from ebay in the 1900 -2004 it was worth buying those days are gone new sellers that made me no longer shop on ebay

      Take it from me. In the year 2021 the average PS3 price on eBay should not be considered scalping cause it’s still well below it’s real value. The ps5 market place is the true epitome for scalping there is no reason for it too cost so much as it really isn’t that big a deal from its predecessor.

    Actually jacob, sixaxis is all dualshock 3 controllers, meaning you can ise the controller and turn it to the side to turn in a game instead of the stick

    I’m not 100% sure, but to answer why the top of the box was cut out was for a UPC rebate. I can remember purchasing my 60GB version from FYE, and there was some sort of rebate to send in, but required the UPC cutout from the box.

    I don't know why actually, but one other thing that I also always happen to notice with backwards compatible PS3 consoles, for some reason, is that every time you start or quit a PS2 game on the PS3, the Sixaxis or DualShock 3 wireless controller always disconnects from the console and then you have to press the PS button each time to reconnect the controller again. I've had that happen to me too a lot from before whenever I would start or quit a PS2 game on a backwards compatible PS3 even though that doesn't seem to happen with PS1 and PS3 games though. It's only with PS2 games for some reason.

    I have a 60 GB PS3. It's still running strong, but I had to replace the power supply, that failed a couple of years ago. It has better compatibility than your 80GB model, but it still had PS2 games that would crash.

    Owned my ps3 since August of '08 an 80gb model that came with MGS4 and really enjoyed it and over the years started to collect games for it and really liked the games that came on this system compared to the Xbox 360. I suffered the yellow light of death once back in 2012 because of leaving the system on for hours and hours due to downloading demos from the PS store. From there on upgraded the HDD to an SSHD 1tb and never had that issue again since then. Recently been playing some games like RAGE, Lair, Haze, Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo 5 and 6, and Asura's Wrath and I got 2 cabinets filled with the games over the years and some hidden gems that are now worth a pretty penny.

      It may have 4 ports and still not be BC model. What you should look at is the colour of frame around disc tray, if it's silver it's BC one, if black it may be software based BC (or no bc at all), both of them though actually can't play ps2 and ps1 games...

    The barcode corner of the box was cut off because during that time (circa 2007), Sony was offering 5 free blu-ray movies if you provide proof of purchase of a blu-ray player, and the PS3 was considered one. I'd know because I did the same, and still have my original CECHE01 model in original condition :)

    I was about to ship a Fat 60 GB PS3 from Japan but shipping was too expensive so I ditched it and the YLOD time bomb on these early models is always on the the back of my head.
    I used to have a used 60 GB model model and it only lasted a month 'till it YLOD on me that's why.
    Slim and Super Slim PS3 is all I need since I'm already doing PS2 SATA HDD mod there's no need for BC on fat PS3.
    But I loved the looks of launch models so elegant but it only looks like that for 15 minutes.
    My PS3 Slim is such a tank it over 10 years old and it only needs disc drive replacement despite being very dusty and scratchy.
