  • West Valley City, Utah police needed a break. They were running out of leads after searching for Susan Powell for more than a year and a half. Her husband, Josh Powell, remained the sole suspect in his wife’s disappearance but had avoided being arrested or charged with any crime related to the disappearance.
So, in the summer of 2011, police crafted a plan. They secured court authorization for a wiretap on three phone lines: Josh Powell’s cell phone, his father Steve Powell’s home line (where Josh was then living with his two sons, Charlie and Braden) and Steve Powell’s mobile phone.
The Cold Podcast previously detailed how several significant events during August and September of that year were coordinated by police as “catalysts” for the wiretap. The entire effort was known by the secret codename “Operation Tsunami.” However, details of the actual captured phone calls have never been publicly disclosed.
    Until now.
What follows are selected excerpts from the secret Powell wiretap records, obtained and accessed exclusively by Cold.

Take away point: anytime a wife does not feel safe about the husband, just LEAVE. Writing journal might help during post murder investigation but what good would it be when you’re dead. Susan Powell, Shanann Watts, Suzanne Morphew all had indicated they didn’t feel safe with their husband. And we all know what happened.

I think that the problem many of these women feel alone and powerless. And in some ways they are because they have been isolated or the monster has them brainwashed. Susan’s story has help awaken some victims to leave. There a lot of comments of women saying them left after Susan’s story was told.

@Teresa Gayudice One of my best friend's grandpas was the prosecutor in the Sylvia Likens case, and you're so right: it's a case that Indianapolis as a city has still yet to get over. The obscenity of some crimes just doesn't fade with time.
Literally, even saying the name "Banizewski" aloud publicly in Indianapolis will STILL immediately get you a lot of sad and/or angry looks. My dad visibly shudders when he hears that name.
It's so true what you said- we need to never forget that these victims were complex, flawed, humans...not angels, but humans who deserved SO much better from life. It's heartbreaking.

I left with my kids years ago. I was told I'd have to share custody since I had no proof of violence to them. I went to a women's shelter and watched a Hispanic woman have to send her 5 children to visit a man who had mercilessly beaten her repeatedly. But not yet the children. So somehow that meant they were safe with him.
    Until they're not.
And since I was now homeless, he might even get full custody.
I agreed to sign over the house, the car, everything, in exchange for custody, with supervised visitation for him. He was drunk and violent every night. I would've stayed if I had to leave them alone with him.
I stayed at the shelter 3 months until I got to the top of the list for housing help.
I tried to make it fun for the kids.
We need a system that sees a dangerous person to the spouse as dangerous to the kids.
We need more help, before people judge those who can't get out, and before we endlessly hear 'there's help.'
The stories I could tell of the hardship we faced, the way people treat you when you're using food stamps. How hard it is to find anybody to rent to you with Section 8 assistance. They think you're not good people to rent to, and there's no law that says they can't discriminate.
I never lived anywhere that I didn't leave better than I found it. Pride maybe. I wanted them to know I wasn't trash.

Obviously that's what led to the warrant for the eventual house raid and the subsequent chain of events( Steve's arrest, Josh losing custody of the boys, and the murder suicides when he simply gave up)Steve's imprisonment(probably the main cause of his health decline... He died only yr after being released & only seven years after the raid.

I was LDS/Mormon and had been bred to believe I shouldn’t leave no matter what, too.
After my husband nearly killed me and I was in my hospital room, my doctor said, “If you don’t leave, the next time I see you you’ll be in a casket.”
I left. My entire Mormon/LDS ward (church) turned their backs on me.
My non-member female friend took me in.
I had to re-learn to write, spell, and read. My friend also married me so I’d have health insurance.
When the church found out, they excommunicated me.
    The LDS/Mormon church is anti-family, anti-women.
Kinda like when a cereal says, “now more raisins!” and you think you bought the non-raisin cereal because you can’t find any raisins, yet the box says, “more raisins!”
The LDS/ Mormon church talks about families being number one and women being so special, but they don’t stand behind that.

Stalking your daughter in law ~ this is not Love or Romance or Attraction ~ it's bullying, it's antisocial behaviour, it's immoral, unethical, barbaric, he was delusional about her, he knew she wasn't getting atta-girls or hugs or kisses from Josh, he knew she was lonely for comforting gestures, attention from her hubby.
Steve and Josh both control freaks.
If Steve truly loved Susan, he would have respected her position and backed off, let her go.

The day he was heading back home when she disappeared, he probably wouldn't have come back if he found out the police were on to him. He probably would have hurt the boys then along with himself. Those kids had no chance after she was gone. He truly truly angers me. Evil incarnate.

One that actually took Susan’s side straight out of the gate, and even implicated her own brother to LE. My initial comment was more so regarding Steve’s character. Steve is a criminal in his own right, and is possibly indirectly complicit in Susan’s demise. Their upbringing is not an “excuse” for murder, but I would venture that it is certainly a relevant precursor. There is a fairly obvious culmination of events that created Josh Powell, and helped to shape him into a murderer. I think that can be said of a lot of terrible human beings. Obviously josh was raised with some very destructive immoral ideas and perspectives especially their behaviors towards women. Steve's obsession with his own daughter as a sexual object was very destrubing to me. I almost feel he projected these thoughts and past experiences with Jennifer onto susan. Its as if he was never able to get over those wicked dirty thoughts of his own daughter. Chilling when he even wonders as he reads susans journals and imagining her growing into a woman if her own father was turned on by her as he was with Jennifer. Josh cant even see this behavior as immoral which shows how brainwashed he had been growing up in the powell home. He cannot see that this type of behavior is not acceptable even criminal, instead he dismisses it as oh that just how my dad is.🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😱😱😱😱😱😖😖😖😖💔💔💔❤ even Charlie and Braden were not human beings they were objects used to hurt the coxes. Because I literally signed up for a membership on there, just to gain access the bonus episodes that are _exclusively_ available on that website alone. Just trying to figure out if I can cancel it before I get another charge which I shouldn’t have ever been charged in the first place.
This is all your fault.... you just had to be so thorough in your research as well as entertaining in your delivery. So I blame you completely for my insomnia, for my bank account having less than the usual low amount and for my 2nd round of addiction to this case... you should know what you are doing to people with your incredible podcasts! The only thing I hope you will consider, would be to make some videos (you could even post them here on TH-cam) to go along with the podcasts to add visuals for those of us who would appreciate more of our senses being stimulated. Thank you for all of the hard work you have spent to present this information to your listeners. I just wish you would have added Aleena’s interview to the mix.

There are two people left who know what happened to Susan's remains. The sister Elina and the brother John. Elina helped Micheal transfer the body up North to ID or OR when Josh went back with the rental vehicle and dug her back up from the shallow grave and passed her remains to Micheal. He was in a panic that they were going to go find the shallow grave it was obvious he put her in by the shovel and rake in the van that were removed with the tarp which her body had lain in on the trip out to dugway area. I even have a suspicion where they took her and wish I could suggest that to someone before the siblings could change that after reading it here.

It now makes sense of what lead to the tragedy of the kids and why Susan didn’t leave josh, I could never get why she didn’t leave but she really did fear him and with how he cruelly killed their kids. Josh did his best to brainwash his boys. It was when Charlie started telling the truth that Josh murdered him. Also Braden lay down on a poster of a woman and said "mommy". They missed Susan. All that happy talk was what Josh drilled into them. They were too young to understand mommy was never coming back.

Nacho Problem Can I ask what your source is for that theory? I've seen a lot of differing ideas, but that's a pretty new one to me.
I do know that it can be nearly impossible to fully cremate a human body, and it takes a *lot* of time and fuel, so I'm really curious what your theory is as to how he managed to accomplish that undetected. He wouldn't have had time to do it during the "camping trip," so it would have had to be after that.
Just to be clear, I'm not being snarky. I know sometimes comments can come off that way, but I'm genuinely curious about all the different theories, and where I can learn more on each of them. Thanks so much- lots of food for thought in your idea!

Nicola George Ok,TMI I know, but when I was growing up we had family friends who owned a mortuary & crematorium. The dad, Mr. Nelson, always really encouraged me to go to mortuary school. I really liked him and his daughter, so I talked to them a lot about their business.
They told me that it takes a tremendous amount of heat and time to fully destroy a human body. To the point that even commercial crematories don't produce the fine ash "cremains" that most people think they do. In fact, they have special machines which grind up the burnt bones & other remaining material into that fine ash, because what comes out of the crematorium is more like a chunky, gravel texture with recognizable bones. Wood alone evidently takes so long to cremate a body that cremation was outlawed in the UK for years (until gas crematories were invented) because a trend for cremation in the middle ages actually led to widespread deforestation of Britain!
Also, I traveled to India years ago, and was shocked to see that the famous wooden funeral pyres on the banks of the Ganges didn't come near to cremating bodies; only the very wealthy can afford enough wood for that. So most people are only partially cremated, and whatever's left is placed in the river...but so much of the body is often left over that the government of India actually imported snapping turtles from America to "clean up" the river by scavenging.
So, even if Josh used that acetylene torch, it would've been a VERY long, messy, dangerous process. And I just can't see where he would've had the time, since Susan's disappearance was seemingly discovered before Josh had time to fully implement his plans, and so he was unable to get away after that first day for long enough to finish...if that was indeed what he was planning to do. (Sort of like with Chris Watts: neither had time to fully implement their plans for concealing their crimes, because they evidently didn't count on their victims having loved ones who would miss them immediately...)
Again, sorry for the TMI! 🥺
