  • West Valley police detective Kim Waelty interviewed four-year-old Charlie Powell on Dec. 8, 2009 about his missing mom, Susan Powell. Charlie told a confounding story about camping, Dinosaur National Park, airplanes and beaches. Detectives used information Charlie provided to confront Susan's husband, Josh Powell, who was at the same sitting for an interview with detective Ellis Maxwell.

These people are more worried about their paycheck than any human.....let alone a child. As soon as Charlie told her he didn't eat today that was my very same thoughts exactly. She could also be too worried he would be too distracted from the food more than telling his story. Common sense tells you that children get cranky when they are hungry. The brain needs food in order to think and function. LORD knows if I don't eat breakfast first thing in the morning I get cranky so people better stay away from me at that point....lol.

Then she would be seen as a caregiver a mother or father figure. She is trained to get down to his level so he feels comfortable.. appearing as a child or playmate rather than an adult figure. Also she cannot serve food and hinder his focus. He isn’t starving or in any pain or distress. There’s nothing wrong with how she conducted herself in fact she did exactly what they are trained to do.
At the same time the law is the law and everyone has to follow it. It upsets me so many innocent professionals are blamed or called incompetent when they couldn’t do anything at that time. The only one to blame is the father and that’s it. They gave supervised visits. Not a drop off and walk away.... you can’t just take someone’s kids by law without a ruling from judge so they did what they could and had it supervised. He had that right as the father.
It’s a horrible situation but no one else is at fault here but the dad. He would have got them anyway he could sooner or later. He knew they seen too much and the longer it went on the more he thought about killing them to save his own ass but then decided to die right along with them which to me is disturbing as hell
If I want to die I’ll go die but to kill two small innocent babies tbat fresming loves you so so much ... ugh / he did it so cruelly too take cones life while the other watched the beating and then the fire while that poor supervisor is going into a massive panic attack on 911 and being told it’s not serious enough. The dispatcher didn’t understand what she was saying because she was in so much distress right before the fire... she didn’t even know the address she was at she was so upset for those kids when they got snatched in. I used to work in child welfare as an investigating caseworker. One time I met with a young boy at school (elementary) and brought him lunch because the only time and place I could interview him was at school during lunch. It was an arrangement I'd made in advance with the principal. I ended up taking custody the boy and his older brother and opening a civil court case. My documentation of his interview included providing him lunch because I thought it was important to demonstrate I wasn't preventing him from having a meal. The parents' attorneys had a field day with that and claimed I used a happy meal from McDonald's to bribe the kiddo to say what I wanted him to say. There are so, so many nuances to interviewing little kids.

Shame on her for not making him comfortable and assisting him with taking off his coat. You don't ask someone if they're hungry or thirsty with no intention on giving them anything when they give you a yes answer. 🙄 Especially a child. She needs better training for this kind of work. She probably doesn't get to many house guests if this is the way she is. Obviously a horrible host. Children in any situation where they are unfamiliar and they are having to deal with difficult circumstances they should be accommodated with age according accommodations to keep them happy and busy and not uncomfortable and hungry or thirsty. Always put yourself in the child's situation and mindset. It doesn't take you to be a parent or a genius or even highly educated or anything. It's about courtesy and common sense. She should be reprimanded for not getting him something to eat after he told her yes that he was hungry and that he didn't have any breakfast. Not turn around and ask him if he had a damn cookie!!🙄🤦‍♀️😡😤😢. I would have did whatever I could to get him something to eat or snack on immediately. Even if it was getting on the phone and having something delivered and paying for it myself.

Still sick the focus is on one meal and not the fact they had to go back to the abuser. The fact they weren’t fed along with the case existing was not enough to save those kids from all the abuse they received alone with having to live with their grandfather who sexually attacked kids and there were multiple instances where people witness outburst towards the kids and nothing was done. In later interviews kids have food and all the bs you was and they chose to lie for him and were groomed and trained. One meal is nothing when compared to the life the had to live after their mother who actually cared for and about them was gone. But of course your outraged about one meal when they had that and choose to lie for him. And had to stay in the abuse and were finally away but the stupid judge forced them to have visits and now here we are they are gone forever. One meal is nothing when they were forced to live with that monster. The fact the was not and still thanks to people like you being used against the father is ridiculous. How they handled it honestly does not matter because at the end of the day those kids had to go back with that monster because of a public concerned with eating and not the fact they had to be with a monster.

Giving food can also give the effect of a motherly figure instead of a playmate... and as I said chomping away on food will hinder the entire process as he won’t be as focused on her but rather the food. He isn’t going to perish after 25 minutes. Ya know these guys are professionals believe it or not there’s a reason for everything they do and how and why. Yes he could have been given food prior to going into the interview but once in there giving him food can be seen as coercion. Similarly, doing something as seemingly innocent as helping a little boy take his coat off can be considered as prompting or suggesting he talk about when another adult took his clothes off.
You have to be so very careful when interviewing children. I hope this help people understand that what is done is for a reason.

He isn’t in any distress or in any pain. Food would take his focus away and see her as someone like a mom rather than another playmate... it’s important to note though had he said he’s starving or hungry or things like that and they would be given food obviously so they aren’t in any distress at the time of the questioning... she has to make him comfortable and relaxed which is what she did. Charlie remembered accurately what he did last night (go camping) and he explained that camping is when you make smores. He described it as a graham cracker, marshmallow, chocolate, and another graham cracker. This is amazing and accurate detail!! Of course, he mentions being in a plane and going to Dinosaur National Park. After seeing other material about this case it seems like he might have mixed up some details, which is typical. Kids always said they did stuff "yesterday" when it was really last week or last Christmas. My students have told me their grandma lives at the airport and that bananas grow at Starbucks. Makes sense - that's where they have seen those things.
When the researcher leaves the room, Charlie says "A Beach has that tree with a coconut". He looks for coconuts. As he is talking to himself he is thinking out loud and you can hear his thought process. He explains where the microphone is and how it works. He talks about pulling something out and putting it to the left - tissues? Maybe there is a trash can next to the table? Next he is looking at the giraffe painting and says the giraffe has two eyes. This is significant because the picture is a side profile and he can only see one of the mother's eyes. He understands reality and object permanence because he knows the eye is there, even though he can't see it.
It's easy to think kids are talking nonsense, but sometimes they just haven't learned all the words yet. One time we were talking about fast food restaurants and my nephew, who was 6, asked about the one with the foot on the sign. We had no idea what he was talking about but after more information, we realized he meant Chik-fil-A! Of course, the C on the sign is a chicken, but look at it - you can see why it might look like a foot! He really did know what he was talking about. We just had to listen and figure out what he meant, then it made perfect sense! As he grows, he will get better at describing things.
Because I have followed this case, I know that Josh liked to hunt for crystals in the mountains. He was part of groups of people who were interested in these geodes or crystals and he would take his boys to some of the meetings. Josh once told acquaintances that the best way to dispose of a body would be to throw it into a mine. There were a lot of mines near where they went "camping" that night. The area was searched but many of the mines are flooded or unstable and impossible to search. Charlie knew about crystals. I also suspect he saw a lizard either on that trip or another one and his parents talked to him about it. Lizards are related to pythons. Maybe he liked snakes? My step-nephew went through a "green anaconda" phase.
I think it's fascinating how Charlie understands things. This tells me that his mom (and daycare worker) would talk to him and read to him to help him understand the world that rationalize things.

Especially when you consider that all my comment consists of is a desire to help a defenseless child, who was basically orphaned and hungry. You might not have any comprehensive ability for compassion or empathy, but others do. Being without breakfast, lunch, or dinner he's very hungry. They stopped first at the great salt lake, then at the Eccles Dino park, then drove up to go digging for crystal GEODES in Juab county, where his dad could have buried their mom, with the crystals.... and they can camp on site as long as they don’t camp directly on a dig site. Has no one in her department heard a story from a 4 year old?! She’s probably buried near the Dugway geode dig sites. If she was unfamiliar with the area, Charlie gave such unique characteristics, the law enforcement agencies in those areas should’ve been contacted immediately to provide assistance. What stunned me most of all is that they didn’t call in a forensic child interviewer. Go ahead and do the initial interview if there’s not one that could get there in time, but have one there the very next day.

I’m not sure why so many want her to serve food and defeat the entire purpose. She has to keep him focused on her and the questions. She also is talking this way on purpose to give him the feel of another kid a playmate not an adult questioning him.... she is putting herself at his level. If she goes and gets food that may be changed as he may then see her more as a motherly figure and not a friend but the main reason is focus. He can’t be chomping away and not giving her his full attention.
She is a professional and she is trained to behave this way.
It’s sad that u Lways see so many blaming others or trying to find faults for the death of a child because it’s just so hard to understand... someone must know someone must have been able to fix this but sadly the only one here to blame is the father.... everyone else had to follow the law... it’s just that simple. You can’t take a kid without evidence and he got supervised visits which by law they have to give him
In all honesty do you think anyone seen this coming? Men murder wives a lot but often they don’t murder the kids later for being witnesses. Sadly he was only trying to cover his own ass. He knew the boys have seen too much.
It would only be. MTter of time before he found a way to kill them and nothing else could change that sadly he was seriously disturbed and delusional but again he is the only one we should be pointing fingers at

He's A toddler, it wasn't hidden, unsupervised children tend to plunder around. He never acted afraid of the woman. And your theory on him being scared the woman was gonna hurt him or his family is laughable at best. He was thinking about why his mama was left with the crystals and his daddy was there when she wasn't anymore. He never appeared scared or intimidated by the woman. Its quite normal to call them that. Lets agree that neither of us are in positions to say what he was thinking. That was my point earlier. I applaud your credentials, but talking to a small child in an emergency situation and talking to a child after the fact to get information, are not the same thing. You ask for addresses and send ER's. Trying to get a child to talk about something they were told not to talk about, like the murder of a parent in their presence, takes finesse and patience. And, again, my original comment was not hostile at any level. Verbally or otherwise. Its been pretty much a civil discourse.

    • @amandaroman3471
      @amandaroman3471 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

She’s a trained professional and doing what she’s trained to do. She’s not being mean or making him suffer. First of all he never says he’s really hungry or his stomach hurts like y’all imply with these comments. she can’t feed him or it’ll ruin the focus on the questions and it’s not like he’s being held up for hours here come on it’s 25 misns and he never says
He’s in any distress or pain by the way.
But also in addition to focus another reason is she needs to get down to his level which is why she speaks this way.
They are trained to have a child relate more to you when you appear more child like... as if your a playmate from school and not an adult... one can imagine serving food can also hinder that... he may then see her more as a caregiver mom or dad rather than an equal. But the main reason is so he can focus.
Every time we get any child death everyone jumps on every single adult in their lives and blame them but in reality we need to blame the dad and that’s it. Everyone involved had to follow the law and can’t just go snatch a kid and run off to save them. Sadly it doesn’t work that way and we have to do things a certain way. Yeah court systems suck but like I said there is no one else to blame. Christ it’s like y’all think the entire town knew and didn’t do anything when they could have.
Nothing could be done at that time but supervised visits to keep them safe a worker wAs always suppost to be with him. He snatched them and ran inside it wasn’t her fault she didn’t have a chance but anyways law is law he has
      Rights as a father
Even when suspected of murder . Until proven they can’t take his rights completly away period.

But rage at a 911 operator who didn't have a chance in hades of stopping anything? The moment that front door shut with the kids on the other side it was over. No police or fire vehicle was going to get there fast enough, even if the 911 operator had understood what was going right away. Eight minutes after the initial 911 call, the house blew up. Within those eight minutes, the boys suffered what conceivably would have been fatal wounds even without the explosion. Police were dispatched about the same time reports came in about the explosion. So, even KNOWING that an explosion and house fire with people inside and a possible domestic dispute going on, it still took them 14 minutes to get to the scene. Had police been dispatched the very second that first 911 call came in, it's very likely they would have been 6 minutes too late and/or injured. Be angry, just be angry at the correct system.
