One thing: even when you're underwater, you can grab onto flying (swimming) tails, and though you can't fly up, you can jump off and tails will follow you upwards, letting you ladder up out of water.
Oh what??? Does that work on all games you can control Sonic and Tails on? Iirc that's means that works on Mania too since it runs on the same engine (mostly) as Origins's remakes but I'm not sure about that so take it with a grain of salt.
First time in my life I see those secret paths in Chemical Plant act 2, played this game hundreds of times and there's still secrets to discover, its crazy
In a game where the level layout feels like if you shuffled a thousand cubes into different shapes and spread them across the screen like butter. Its exoected
New video idea? Personally, I'd say most of them are possible, but... how does anyone do the third part of the final Special Stage while getting anywhere close to perfection?
I think the reason for the discrepancy in Emerald Hill Act 1 is because of the section where there's two pyramids of rings and a checkpoint on top of a loop. Both pyramids look to contain 10 rings, but I am fairly certain that 3 of the rings are actually duplicated. I don't know if they show up as such in a level editor, but I do know from playing the game as a kid that when you left the special stage as Sonic on the Mega Drive version, your rings would be reset to 0, so I would always collect those rings again and I would always end up with 23 despite there looking to only be 20.
Impressive thinking to get around those one ways, especially in Metropolis Zone. I absolutely thought either it or Hill Top would be a run killer, even after the explanation of how the Origins version changed ring placements. Well done.
Well, the classic version has rings inside walls so it's not really possible atm(maybe in the future with glitches). Reason why Cybershell said it was impossible
This was absolutely insane!! I love masochistic challenges like this. I CAN'T BELIEVE some of the stuff you came up with for this!! I'm glad i clicked on your channel to see if you did anything else cool beyond the TTYD video. It's a shame not many others did the same.
I've played this game since it came out, and I had no idea there is a perfect bonus for getting every ring. 😅 edit:Another prohibiting part of using the Genesis version for this challenge is that you can't fly with tails. That wasn't added until Sonic 3, (along with shields and insta-shield) but I'm sure you already knew that.
The trick to the openings in the walls in Emerald Hill are these invisible objects called path swappers. There are two "paths" or collision planes Sonic 2 and later toggle between to allow Sonic to go through loops and such (Sonic 1 only had one collision layer and loops were a programmed exception but this is why it has no crossing paths). If you are on path 1 for example, the wall is solid. You'd have to cross a path swapper to get onto path 2 and then it's not solid. You can see these objects in debug mode in some versions but a level editor makes it super clear where they are and how they work. They also are used for when Sonic needs to go in front of or behind level art so they can also be used to do that with or without also changing collision.
If you want an insane challenge, I offer you a challenge no other TH-camr has accepted (or read my comment either most likely) Complete Cannon Fodder and keep Jools and Jobs alive until the end. Anyone else can come and go but you have to keep those two alive throughout. I believe in you
1:34 if the rings touched sonic's hands while tails is flying with him the rings will get doubled I was pretty shocked when I found that out but it's true
When I was a kid, I used to play the rom hack Sonic Delta and try getting every single ring in every zone (as there was a ring counter that counted both the rings you collected and those you didn't). I probably didn't complete many levels, but given the version I was playing was based on the Mega Drive version, I doubt it'd been a success. Thanks for doing this challenge years later!
@@Melmoth54 I’m sorry dude but I’m pretty sure that using the origins version of Sonic 2 counts as *cheating* because origins removes the impossible rings and your meant to use the genesis version so basically Cybershell’s words still stand but until you can prove that *it is* possible to collect *every* single ring *in* the genesis version of Sonic 2 Cybershell is still right
6:42 it actually IS possible to collect those two rings in the Genesis version using 2P Tails off-camera and thus get a Perfect Bonus in AR2. He ignores collision with sprite-based objects when off screen. Video: th-cam.com/video/OMtvSr5AsYk/w-d-xo.html
I know in the Genesis version you could use Tails to open the doors in Hill Top Zone from the other side by moving so the doors are off screen and deloaded, move Tails to right before the door, and then scroll them back onscreen. I don't know if this is possible on the Origins version however.
Yeah I tested that and unfortunately it didn’t work. Practically every glitch from the Genesis version was removed, which made this run quite a bit trickier.
They removed every Genesis glitch but added the "can't get crushed if you're crouching" and "block in Casino Night disappears if it crushes Tails" glitches lol
My best guess as to what's happening in EHZ 1, is that each zone has a hard-coded value for the number of rings required for the Perfect Bonus... with this number corresponding to the number of ring objects in the layout. For EHZ1, it's 296. There are likely 3 erroneously duplicated rings somewhere in the level, putting you to 299. Because 299 is greater than 296, you still get the Perfect Bonus, likely because it does a Greater Than/Equal check to the aforementioned hard-coded perfect value.
Well, at least it’s possible to get every ring In the blue sphere stages to get a “Perfect”. However, Metropolis Zone is as hard as hell. Sega did it with Eggman's fortress in West Side Island
Lol I used to watch these TAS videos that collect all the rings in every single zone using various glitches and routing that is beyond my comprehension. As it turns' out I've heard a few others in the community call these "Ring Attacks" where the goal is to try to collect all rings or as much rings you can and finish the zone. For TAS speedruns in this case would be to get all of them. But I have seen others collect every ring in a few zones so its entirely humanly possible. The Sonic M2 port on Switch even has this mode called "Ring Attack" much like "Score Attack" where the goal is to collect rings. So out of interest I wanted to try this myself and its really fun and really satisfying to collect as many rings as you can and watch that score tally go up, and up, and up. I've tried these for the other games too. Up until Matble Garden Zone if you have all 7 Emeralds by Hydrocity Zone, you can get 50 Rings-per Giant Ring. If you play super well you can get more than over 999 rings in total. Marble Garden Zone became so much more fun for me to play because of that. I'd always come back to Sonic 2 for these playthroughs too. I can say watching this There were so many things I just learned through this video. I've been playing Origins and the M2 port religously since those came out. But I had no idea there were rings in such out of reach areas (Like Chemical Plant Zone Act 2, or Casino Night Zone Act 2) Although I knew about the Tails paths. I did also want to add since the goal for this is to get the perfect bonus. You could skip Mystic Cave Zone because your ring count resets once you enter Hidden Palace Zone, and you can't finish Mystic Cave to get to the Flicky Capsule. But otherwise. This was a great watch. After like, 10 years of my life playing Sonic 2 (? I don't remember exactly) I never even knew this had a perfect bonus feature. Nor did I really pay attention to it lol. I learned a lot from this video and it gave me some ideas :)
I remember trying to do this challenge back then when Debug Mode is starting to feel old. Just then I figured there's alot of rings scattered around that cannot be taken out of ordinary means. I'm really curious how it will play out but it really makes more sense that this is Origins and not the original. And Mystic Cave Zone 2 Player somehow is just giving me a really really weird kind of nostalgia. It just hits different compared to others. Hidden Palace is using this now but track 10 is something I remember I kept playing back then because it's not everywhere.
Another detail that makes this challenge impossible in the original game, tails couldn't pick up sonic. It's funny they kept some of the programing oversights though, because they're just as necessary.
There is, but in the genesis version, it's impossible to get a perfect bonus in Act 2 of Casino Night, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean and Metropolis as there's at least 1 ring that can't be grabbed with any method. At least Origins removed those impossible rings, so that's a plus.
Wow, I thought this was impossible. I tried so hard to do this as a kid on my uncles Genesis. I was able to perfect the first two zones no problem but Chemical Plant 1 always stumped me and now I know why.
"Nothing compared to Hill Top Zone act 2" You're not the only one; Go to "Darkness the Curse" and ask him about Hill Top Zone act 2 . . . Sure he can tell you all about that (in his Sonic XL game play) :3
Obvious next step is to try and do this in Sonic 3. Given how massive 3's zones are though combined with Knuckles' routes that would probably make more stages impossible than not. Perhaps a different game then? CD comes to mind.
Fun fact: you don't even need to keep all of the collected rings in order for the perfect bonus to count. You can lose your rings and still get it. It looks to see if any stationary rings are left in the level, and if there are none, you get the bonus. And as you said, monitors and slot machine wins don't count.

Hidden Palace Zone was a Zone that was supposed to be in the original game, but it was scrapped. In the 2013 rerelease, the team created their own take on the Zone and put it into the game as a secret. It's also in the Sonic Origins version of course.
