@@skunthundler I think it's just due to a value that the devs entered in the animation code was too short by accident and due to it being so short they did not noticed this frame exist and was changing to quickly, this happened in a lot of other games.

I swear I saw that 5th one more than 10 times throughout the years, & it looked similar to the 1 ledge animation in Sonic 1. Maybe that's me having the Mandela effect, maybe Atgames used a bizarro version, or perhaps it only exists in certain copies of the game. Who the heck knows?

I get the impression the sprite was made specifically for when sonic is pushed off with a moving block rather than for general ledges. It feels more fitting in that scenario and if it was programed for that then the regular method would be a side effect.
Yeah finally watching this it seems clear it's meant specifically to transition between the facing away animation and the direction-independent far edge balance animation which is going to happen when getting pushed (because when controlling sonic the walking animation interrupts it).
Cybershell is going to make a video one day on how one tiny, miniscule pixel in Sonic 3 is slightly off color for a fraction of a second during a specific sequence and I would love it.
Like how when you get the red Super Emerald and watch the little animation of it lighting up, it appears dark purple. Then every other time you see it, it's red. Unless another emerald is being lit up, then it's purple again.

I think it's because he's self-aware but not self-deprecating, like he knows this stuff is a really niche interest and makes humour out of that but still goes unapologetically all-in
Sprites are more than just animation it can sometimes show you the characters personality like sonic 1 this is his first ever appearance and since he doesnt talk this is where the sprites come in not only does the sprites show how sonic is currently feeling it also shows his personality like how if you leave him standing for too long he will make "cmon hurry" sprite which is very expressive
I know.. you rarely hear people talk about this, even on public transportation where there's ample time to do so. Now, yes, now and again you will hear the odd person discuss it with someone during a lunch break at work or while using a public urinal, but it's rare enough that I still react to hearing it. That's really sad, but I guess it's a sign of the times we live in.

After discovering edge animation in original sonic the hedgehog back when I was a kid I began to check every single 2d side scroller to see if they included similar animation, as if it's some kind of a gold standard. I'm keep doing this to this very day...
Now that I think about it, I don't think _any_ 2d Mario games have an edge animation (unless you count dropping off the edge to hang by your hands, which i don't because it's a physically different mechanic)

It reminds me how back then I found those balancing animations as a part of the games' quality, as if it's affecting the imaginary ranks I gave them. Some of my favorite ones were from Rayman 1, Captain Claw (which also included a 'woah' voice sample, extra points) and specifically Omega's animation from Sonic Heroes, which made him say 'danger' in a cute way.
Here’s a fact that makes the sonic 1 2013 edition “unplayable”, for his skidding sprites it uses the CD skidding sprites rather than the original skidding sprites from the original game. I’m shocked and upset from that fact

I found out about the sprite 3 years ago on casino night zone with the moving blue blocks , I had to record it on my phone to see if wasnt tripping out and I wasn't. After watching this video I felt like an absolute god for knowing something that no one will care about but that didn't stop me from feeling like a king.
I've seen this sprite before on the old Sonic 2 Sonic sheet on TSR (the one you cited) and for the longest time I had no idea where it was used. I also never knew there even was a back-facing balancing sprite for the longest time. It's great to see someone going through and shining a spotlight on these odd little details.

Actually theres another feature thats missing from the Christian Whitehead Sonic 2 port, during the chemical plant zone boss as sonic, you should be able to duck and be completely immune to robotnik's chemical spill attack, however, in this version the attack still harms you regardless.
