Fun fact: Tails was originally intended to be an AI that kills nearby enemies regardless if you move or not. But they changed it for some strange reason.

3:51 - Tails never returns because he doesn't have his swimming ability yet and the developers thought it would look weird with him flying into the water to respawn. In the code for Tails' respawn, it checks to see if Sonic is still underwater and if so, return to subroutine.
11:32 - When the camera pans down, and then you jump, Sonic's position is now negative, or $FFFF. The camera thinks he's way ahead so it zooms down to find him. As it does this, the collision is "unloaded" due to being too far away from the camera.
12:23 - All of the Nebula's rise up; they're all the same. But they wait for you to be a certain amount of horizontal pixels (like $20) close to them and then they branch to their rise code. The best thing to go towards them as early as possible, so they rise quicker because they start to descend pretty quickly afterwards.

16:17 - That's actually the correct order. Sonic 1 = 1991, Sonic 2 = 1992, Sonic CD = 1993, Sonic 3 (and Knuckles) = 1994, Sonic 3D = 1996.
Oh! I actually didn't know that. Then again, someone who has tinkered around with Sonic 2 would have more knowledge about the game, by default. Also, I was going by events. I've been told that Sonic CD, canonically, takes place between 1 & 2. Not sure if that's official, but I wanted to be safe on that. Guess I still goofed.
The glitch at 11:32 is a vertical underflow, or screen wrap. Because Metropolis Act 3 is taller than what the game normally allows, they made it so Sonic's position is tracked by the screen. By panning the screen and jumping, you can cause the game to freak out.
With hot Sonic can you do a Sonic the Hedgehog 1 game but without defeating a badnik

Mecha Sonic is technically piloted by Robotnik in the background. Hence his controls explode when Mecha is defeated. Regardless of your definition, Robotnik is there for the fight and Mecha Sonic is just another machine he is using to fight you.

To me, a Badnik is an enemy that:
-Dies in 1 hit.
-Releases an animal upon defeat.
-Rewards 100 points upon defeat.
They're basically the weakest fighter minions Robotnik's got. Anything that can withstand more hits, doesn't hold an anima,l or rewards more than 100 points (or no points at all) upon defeat is a higher ranked enemy that wouldn't classify as a basic Badnik.

As soon as you start the game you would immediately fail the challenge since sonics energy bar never depletes or gets filled up properly which is a glitch.

11:41 The “Luck Run” is not intended but it works. I’m 99 percent sure it’s possible with the intended way with Sonic and The yellow demon. Truth is, tails is the reason why Sonic 2 without defeating a Badnik is hard.

Put in a 2nd controller. Even in normal gameplay, you can control Tails like that.
Just don't touch that controller, all he'll do is fly to you and stand still.
As kids we always had someone playing as Tails. I always found the character useful. I hate the hate Tails gets.
To be fair, Badnik's are mostly from the Robtonik Era and the Enemies that have animals powering them.

Sonic and Tails = Hard Mode
Sonic = Normal Mode
Tails = Easy Mode
Knuckles = Very Easy Mode
Tails can't fly in singleplayer in S2
I’d say Knuckles is Hard mode because of his lower jump and some of his mechanics

There is a romhack of this game where you have 30 seconds per level to ditch tails so he needs to respawn called Lose Tails or Else, you might like that.
Verdict: Turn on "Sonic Alone" or "Tails Alone" to make this challenge easier. But if you want to feel like a real pacifist and babysit Tails, leave "Sonic and Tails" on.
At 3:10 that's actually a second grounder that spawns up top.

@@pie7414 But you can skip major parts of the level by just diving into the oil and pressing jump just before you are to die. And that’s the way to skip lot of platforming by going under construction

Uff, Oil Ocean... that level was the level I always wanted to avoid in Sonic 2, it's very boring in my opinion and the design and colors never caught my attention
It came as a surprise to me to discover many disliked Oil Ocean when Mania was released, I always loved its graphics, its music, its badniks… it's not my favorite zone but I always enjoyed playing it fir its esthetics and the fact that it was a bit slow never bothered me. 🤔
@@adrienplazas554 I could not give a reason why I do not like it, the same happens with Sandopolis in Sonic 3, but all the other levels I pass without complaints whether slow or not.
I remember initially having the same feeling... but it *grew* on me over time, and I learned to *like* and appreciate the Oil Ocean Zone - especially in _SONIC MANIA._ ;)
Same with Stardust Speedway from Sonic CD. Past = empty. Other time periods = full of objects on the screen. But Sonic Mania made past great with those Marble Garden references and all. But present (act 2) was still bad. Except for the Metal Sonic boss fight.

You're right. Right before the final boss in metallic madness, you will have to face off three badniks as some type of mini boss. This means you can't beat the zone, making completing sonic CD without defeating a badnik impossible
Are there any speedrun shenanigans (even not used anymore) allowing to skip this boss? If yes, the challenge may still be possible

Actually going through the propellers was the only way I knew to beat the game for a while, as I would usually go through them with the super form. Tbh, when I tried not using a super form or flying I had no idea where to go

Tails was the biggest problem. He tends to jump or spin when he's off screen and there were enemies nearby.
My tails was a good bot he did not jump randomly Guess tails and knuckles don’t get along very well
Depending on where you are, as Sonic, Tails will spin dash or jump to get back to Sonic. Seemed random in my run.

That was crazy. I tried this the other day too.
I remember the time when i was playing Sonic 2 for the first time.
Before that i was only playing Mario as a platformer games 'cause i didn't like Sonic. But then i played Sonic 2 because i was bored. I played on emulator (off course) and when i was on CPZ act 2 on here 2:30 there was that fence thing on right and i didn't know that you was able to go throught it, but i was thinking that this is a solid wall. AND I SPEND LIKE 2 DAYS TO REALISE THAT YOU CAN GO THROUGH IT.
One thing I hate about the second entry that is displayed perfectly here is the sheer Jank of Aquatic Zone

1) Less opportunities to breathe, and
2) More opportunities to completely screw yourself over

dude you don't need invincibility to cheese the chemical plant boss. just jump on him as soon as he appears, count 8 hits, and get back to safety and you'll kill him before he even attacks 😂

That’s called a Level Wrap. It’s more effective on stages like Marble Garden from S3&K.
Sonic’s vertical plane is set to -1, but that isn’t a real number on the location coordinates, but I’m assuming since this is a horizontal stage, the location Sonic was sent to was the same, but the enemy despawned possibly due to a reset of the the assets, plus the many sprites being loaded at once.
Using glitchy tactics like that should warrant a redo of that zone. Seems cheap and illegitimate.
I wouldn't call it a legal tactic for this run, despite it existing. The run is still possible though
Actually, Level Wraps are horizontal. What he did was a Screen Wrap, those are vertical.

INTERESTING VIDEO! *BIG props* for deciding NOT to go the easier way and sticking with Tails, making your playthrough TWICE as challenging in the process. ;)
Also, *"Badniks"* is a MUCH cooler and appropriate/fitting name for *RobotNIK's* minions, instead of the _generic_ "Eggman's robots", or simply "enemies" (LMAO!) in my opinion.
Badnik does sound cool, but eventually, I would have to change the title of later videos. Oh well. Also, playing as Tails wouldn't make the game that much easier, since I played the original version of Sonic 2 and he only flies as an AI player 2.

hey this reminds me, i tried to do a pacifist run of shadow the hedgehog and i had to follow two simple rules: don't hurt any enemy of course, and i'll have to choose a mission that doesn't require harming enemies
i stopped at cryptic castle because i simply din't know where were the other candles i need to light

You said that if the sonic 2 boss theme is playing it's "go time", Mecha sonic plays that theme when you fight him, and he does not release a animal after death, it does the animation that plays when eggman is defeated, just tweaked.

(8:09) The collapsing bridge there is actually _not_ solid from below. It looks to be like the fan that would've blown you onto that bridge decided to turn off at that exact moment (some fans toggle between on and off periodically), which I guess made you think you bumped into the collapsing bridge.
