    To get the whole Marvin Gaye experience...listen to the entire album "What's Goin' On". During the Vietnam War there were many artists writing and recording songs of protest against the war. Marvin Gaye told Berry Gordy his idea for a concept album based on social issues affecting the world. Gordy rejected the idea of Gaye going against 'type' due to his commercial success. Thankfully...Marvin Gaye didn't give in to the pressure from his label. The result is an album that is a musical masterpiece, gained critical success, and will be relevant for decades to come.

And whilst we still have the same struggles today with poverty, racism, wars etc etc...we did still have the ethos of 'work with what you've got' and made the most of that. As hard as times were. See this era as young people and what we stood for is literally in our music catalog. It’s an historical catalog of the times . So much for that “ ok Boomer” insults .
    Civil rights , human rights , ecology , anti war , equal rights , antiestablishmentarianism , affirmation action -all going on simultaneously. We didn’t have the net. We had to be active .
    Ghettos were dreadful. It was changing times . Vietnam was going on .
    Marvin was ahead of his time .
    “ What’s Going On”
    “ Mercy Mercy Me” by Marvin are as good and this music is relevant today .

    • @pablozee6359
      @pablozee6359 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      SSShadow Wolf It is insulting and showing their ignorance when young people look down their noses at people from this generation and like to throw around the term “woke,” acting like they’re the first generation to be socially aware and have this attitude like we were not actively fighting for equality, environmentalism, peace, and an overall better world. Our generation did a whole hell of a lot more than most of the young people today who think putting “woke” hashtags on social media posts makes them an activists. Not trying to generalize all young people. I know some people in the 18-30 age range who walk it like they talk it, but the majority of the people actively involved in my community are in the 40+ age range. For the younger people here, not everyone born before 1980 was a bigot, racist, xenophobe, misogynist, homophobe, polluter, etc.

    • @ssshadowwolf6762
      @ssshadowwolf6762 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Pablo Zee Dont be insulted . I’m 64. I was in the streets as a youth fighting for change and I’ll die doing it .
      I get what you mean though .
      After the “ boomer “ nonsense took off it was clear the young had no clue as to why they have the freedoms they do .
      All one need do is look at the catalog of music from our generation. It will tell them what we were doing -actively.
      I was fortunate to have a family pro-humanity and Involved.
      Us “ boomers “ were fighting for civil rights , human rights , equal rights , supported Caesar Chavez and migrant workers , wanted war to stop ( every generation in my family served from WW2-S.Korea -Vietnam -to the Mid East ) .
      I’m not afraid to call out my govt when necessary .
      I assure you -I am “ woke “.
      Until people understand historical trauma and how to begin to heal and be honest many will remain in mental comas . I abhor injustice and hypocrisy.
      I earned “ woke “. Not on a key board either . So did many others .
      I’m the grand daughter of immigrants on one side and great grand daughter on the other . I’m Irish American. My husband was Native American.
      I’m well versed in history . I can hold my own . I have older siblings and two younger . We cover that entire span .
      I grew up in a globally diverse city and all of what’s going on is unacceptable.
      Proud “ boomer “🔥✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
      We made things happen . Now we have to keep the path clear and teach the young . It begins by knowing who you come from , how , their history and sacrifice and then knowing how this country really came to be -it’s not pretty and we have to be honest .
      Thankfully I was taught very early in life . We are sadly devoid of “ culture “ here and intolerant of others . That needs to stop . Can’t know where we are going until we know where we have been .

    This is off Gaye's 1971 album "What's Going On". He had been more of a pop singer with Motown before that. Motown head Berry Gordy didn't want to release the album - it broke from the Motown hit making formula and also addressed political issues. But Gaye insisted and today the album is considered one of the all-time greats (number 6 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time). Talk about a classic!

    So tragic that we lost Marvin at a young age at the hands of his father. This song is so important now as it was back in the early 70's when it was released. You talk about soul this is the soul man with so many top hits. Try Sexual Healing, Mercy, Mercy Me and one of his best What's Going On.

    • @brownin329
      @brownin329 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sexual Healing wasn't his song. It's wack. The lyrics are by biographer David Ritz or so he says...
      I wouldn't waste anyone's time in it. Best deal is to listen to Marvin's Motown period.

    You have such sincere reactions, I always love watching you. ❤️ I also love Marvin Gaye and am so glad to see you checking him out. This is my fav song by him. There is a book by the same name, “Makes Me Wanna Holler” by author Nathan McCall. He named the book after this song. Wow, what a story. If you have the chance, check it out, for sure!! It’s an easy read, yet riveting story about a black man’s life from childhood on. It’s riveting and I’m sure you’ll relate in many ways. 25 years later and it is still one of my top 10 favorite books. Riveting. Okay, a couple other great songs by Marvin Gaye include “Mercy, Mercy Me,” “Heard It Through The Grapevine,” and “What’s Going On.”

    • @2nowBfree

      I wore out my copy of the original album so watching such a heartfelt response from a first time hearing of “Holler” by a new generation tears me up. In a good way. So beautiful to watch your “discovery” of part of the soundtrack of my younger days. I second the many suggestions for the whole album and was also thinking of Nathan McCall’s book (on my “best of” shelf). I super second your suggestion for such a great book along with his second one with a title tribute to MG: “What’s Going On”

    Marvin Gaye was one of the most gifted musicians of the past century. His success hid a tragic home life; his father was an abusive alcoholic preacher, who regularly sent Marvin's Mom to the hospital. One evening, in 1984, Marvin intervened as his father was going after his Mom, and his father shot him dead. I remember the day. RIP Marvin. He is singing with the angels.
