Let me be the first to say you need to listen to the ENTIRE “What’s Going On” album!! There are no breaks, each song runs into the next so it’s a continuous vibe. “Inner City Blues” is just a sample of this masterpiece!!!

Seconded. The album is amazing, a total experience. Can't believe it was made in 1971, it sounds like it could have been done today.

@@cflournoy1529 I agree, but it's not just the lyrics. The whole song has such a 'modern' vibe to it. Truly a masterpiece.

I had the honor of seeing my brother in a small venue in Belgium right before his death in 1984. I was living in West Germany serving in the USAF and getting ready to cross the English Channel on holiday. I met these French dudes who took me to this small jazz club and were elated that they had a "real" Marvin Gaye fan from the States. Imagine being 10 feet away from Marvin while he was jamming. As it so happens I got the What's Going On Album right when it came out, because my oldest brother was the editor of the entertainment section of our local city's morning and evening press. He told me, "You hang with all the brothers, so who better to tell me if this album is any good or not!" Man! I had a literal soul train coming and going out of my house for two weeks and cashed in a lot of "cool points" during that time, and it was then I gained my nickname of "Cream in the Coffee." You made this ol' dude so happy to see you vibing just like I did when I was 16!

On the very day that Marvin Gaye was killed I remember exactly where I was, and who I was with. The news was devastating then and it still is today. There are only 3 other musical artists who’s passing I can tell you where I was, who I was with and the date. Elvis, John Lennon, and Tom Petty. I still grieve their losses every day of my life. All of them left an indelible mark on my soul.

I stumbled upon your Reaction, and as I just turned 61 I certainly know Marvin Gaye!
It's surreal that I became a lifetime fan when this album came out in 1971, I was 11yrs.old.
My reaction {even at that age} was close to yours, how did he invite me into his unhappiness, and treat me to a smooth groove journey?
I absolutely love your reaction, you saw right off that Marvin had an uncanny gift to sing his emotions and invite the listener to ride along. Marvin was so far ahead of his game that his music still resonates with All generations crossing all genres! Check into him deeper, I promise you will be Blown away! I liked, subscribed, and look forward to your Reaction!

The "What's Goin' On" album marked a whole new direction for Marvin Gaye. He went from singing love songs to "spittin' facts," and did it in the most artistic, soulful way possible. Nobody saw it coming, and when it dropped, its impact was massive. It went instantly from being an album to an anthem. And made Marvin into an icon.

Marvelous Motown Marvin! Back in the day when artists actually used their art to comment on what's going on in the world. Which reminds me, you might wanna do a reaction to Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." But there are lots more before that. Two of my favorites are "That's the Way Love Is" and "Chained." Marvin Gaye was one of the most gifted singers and musicians the world has ever seen. A tragic figure, killed by his father, denying us of decades of music from him.

Marvin Gaye - Sexual Heeling, What's Going On and Let's Get It On

    You're new. I respect that.
Country, Blues, R&B ALL write about experiences, nice, in love, in pain and confused. What you are now listening to are various stages of music evolution. What is now is because of what was then. It's a culmination of styles that many of today's artist's have pulled on to create their own stylistics & sound.
Differences in how they recorded music. How one sings, what one sings about & individual stylings changed with the period. NOT everyone sounded exactly like Bess Smith, or Billie Holiday or Aretha. NOT everyone sounded like Smokey Robinson, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Elvis, Frank Sinatra & Nat King Cole. Nor did everyone sounded like Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand or Dionne Warwick. THEY were the first! After many wanted to emulate & sound like them!
Colored people sung about strife, loss of dreams & being stuck. Even the gospel songs that originated in slavery were about freedom (how & when to escape). Through the evolution, the emotions never were lost although through 'whitewashing' of the songs they did try to take it away. Beatles & Rolling Stones along with a few others, acknowledged the sound & voices of the past artists, many American white musicians & singers wouldn't.
One can hear the history in how they were recorded (the accompaniment, instruments & rhythms). The Civil Rights movement late 50s-60s was happening. Vietnam War, drugs & inequality in jobs & being able to live in decent neighborhoods was still a struggle. But there was enlightening for a few, while many were stuck.
Marvin Gaye didn't' grow up wealthy. He grew up in segregated times. He toured the country & Europe. Many times while on the Motown circuit, he performed for white audiences while sleeping in 'colored only' housing. He toured areas he was instructed on behavior to avoid backlash (staying away from white women, going into crowds to sing to them etc.).
He saw & lived in the 'ghettos'. He's seen people die from overdoses, imprisoned & lose hope. He had a singing partner that died. He as a Colored/Black man saw the promise from the Civil Rights & the defeat (drugs, limited education, gangs & institutional racism). He made money but he wasn't free from everyone's demons.
The music was of the times, to you it was upbeat. To others, it was steady & constant, not really going too fast or slow, just there. Each period shows us something about that time.

I remember back in the day the radio station would play the whole What's Going Album. Classic and still so relevant.

Most DEFINITELY listen to his duets with Tammi Terell (who ALSO died tragically). Some of the most BEAUTIFUL music ever created.
