I was born in 1955. I was in third grade when a Birmingham church was bombed, killing four innocent girls. Then a couple months later Pres. Kennedy was assassinated. Five years later I was in eighth grade and Bobby Kennedy and Dr M L King where assassinated. In the meantime poor young men were being drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam. In 1971, when I was in high school this song was a protest anthem, as some of my brother’s friends were drafted and killed in Vietnam. Fifty years later we haven’t gained much ground.

Tom Breden: I never realized that truth until you stated above. Think it was Marvin's call. To bring attention, an in depth awareness to the politics/turmoil of the time. And the wars still go on. ( Sad ). Berry Gordy did not want Marvin to record any of these activist songs under The Motown Label, too political.. But, Marvin had integrity and followed his conscience and his heart. Sweet Marvin taken too soon. But all of our leaders ( as mentioned/named by poster below, Jon Snellstrom ~ Thank You ) were assassinated in their prime, taken from us. And John Lennon. "December 8th 1980. Why?"

Hey, Sherry, white woman here who turned 60 last August - I totally agree with you -- when I was a teenage and in my early 20's, I lived in Milwaukee - had plenty of friends of different ethnicities.. and even though I was told to beware of certain neighborhoods, I never felt threatened by "black people" - yeah, some guys would give some catcalls, etc. but so did the white guys... (yeah, when I was 18-20 I used to be cute - lol) -- I moved to Boston area and was really surprised by the racism there... I just figured "well, the midwest is much better about that..." imagine my shock a decade or so later about how far BACK we had gone... makes me very sad and frustrated -- I now live back in Wisconsin in a small town between MKE and Madison -- around here, it's VERY white -- and I occasionally hear off-hand comments -- I confront the people that I know who make such ignorant statements... I like to think in a way that doesn't challenge them intellectually - but makes them, perhaps, think a bit... ? IDK -

As a teenager when this song first came out, it moved me then, and it moves me still. Please take a listen to the song without the video...the original song that begins differently than how it was played in this video. It's a historic piece of music and a masterpiece all on its own.

There was no video on the original song. The optics on the video don't actually fit the true narrative of the Song, of Marvin's words. "...simply 'cause our hair is long" referred to white hippies. The black community of this song's era wore a bush/an afro, and proudly. The bigger, the better, the more beautiful. They did not wear long hair/extensions. The images captured in this video are from today. And the only black folk who did wear long hair during this era were the Rastas. And they were never really a part of the the "Marvin Movement". But they always rocked some bodacious dreads, no doubt. Just a little factual back story.

Never witnessed racism. In 2003, had to move to Ohio and work in Cleveland, and heard and felt racism for the first time at the age of 50 and it was towards me. A white Southern Lady. I am white. Most of my family and friends were Trump supporters, as was I. They are not racist and are against racism. I have family who married blacks, who were also Trump supporters. To equate Trump with racism is to misunderstand Trump. The media kept hammering this for the entire time he was president until most people believed it. It is well well known that most of the media are Leftists. Leftist ideology generally views everything through a racial lens whether it has anything to do with race or not. The Trump supporters I know just want what's best for this nation for everyone, not just one color of skin. They are also for equitable and just law and order for everyone. Trump got the most non-white support in the last election than a Republican president had in 60 years.

I think the biggest problem, the definite root of our problems in society today, is the breakdown of the family. It breeds poverty, which breeds resentment, crime, addiction, you name it.
I'm not saying a young woman can't successfully raise outstanding adults by herself because it obviously happens all the time and I'm in awe of them. All the respect in the world for that.
But when you have a man and a woman, (or any gender combo) loving each other and putting their children above all else, the odds are so much better for all involved.
The key though to more strong families is more (much much more) better, good paying jobs and affordable housing.

Peace to all be good everyone...

This song is a good cover for today's world. My favorite song of his is Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay. Really cool.
Did you know his father killed him early in his career? Such a shame! He was really on his way up.

I've loved this song for so long - it taps in to the message everyone with wisdom rests on - without love and striving to come together there is only violence and misery. I don't know why I've always loved Black American music (I'm a freckly lass from Wales, UK) of this era - Otis Redding, Little Richard, Nina Simone, Soloman Burke, to name but a few, but it must be part of why the UK loved Blues and Rock n Roll from the moment the records came off the ships we couldn't get enough, and all our best bands were obsessed from the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc etc etc to our very own Tom Jones, 20th century music was born from Black American music. Thankyou for reacting to this music so I can experience it afresh, it was very moving - I travelled from a difficult start to good place now and let music be my guide (I judge people by their music and tend to know who the good guys are as a result) A big Cwtch (hug) to you, and all the good people in USA at this time

I become emotional whenever I listen to this, and tears begin flowing very soon into it, and continue throughout. I was 10 when MLK Jr. was shot, and when Marvin sang this a few years later, I thought it was a beacon of hope. It was a beautiful call to see a light in the darkness of that time. "We got to find a way..." I vowed to always try, and I often wonder if I tried hard enough. Even in recent conversations with people of color, I hear many losing hope. We must try. Until I die, I will try.

I agree with Gina & sherry. I'm 70 & the last 4yrs have been ridiculously weird. trump's influence seems to have opened the gates for the closet racists. We need more people like Marvin in the world. And people like you who have their eyes opened. It's painful but worth it.

That song was from very difficult times in the 60s and 70s I lived in the US at that time racism was a it’s peak riots the Vietnam War . The message in this song if you really I mean really listen to it . It reflects those times but the only thing that help us make it at the end was music. Music for me was the thing that kept me focused 😞Marvin Gaye was a excellent singer I always had and will have great admiration for his talent and music 👍👍👍

Love Marvin! Too bad this song was released in 1971 when I was 13 and these are still forefront issues today and I’m 63 😞 I’m tired of so little change 😡 Last year was the craziest, hardest of my life too!
Maya Angelou was my favorite poet. We all have to support each other for what’s right!

This whole album follows the theme of this song and each track on the album flows into one another. Based partly on his observations of the world, and partly on letters his brother sent him while he was fighting in the vietnam war. The whole album is an incredible peice of art. And sadly it still rings just as true today as it did in the 70s.

You are very well spoken. Yes, last year was tragic in so many ways. Injustice brought upon good people too many times to count. As far as shootings, imagine, the day after you spoke here, 10 people lost their lives in Boulder, CO in a grocery store! Sad. I hope the world will heal for better days to come.

They reworked this video from the 1970s. I like it even though it made me cry. You said this is the craziest time in your life. I'm 49 and it's the craziest time in my generations as well. The last 6 years have changed everyone. 😢 There's so much anger and hate in our society now it's heartbreaking.

In college '71; had the greatest brothers as friends. My black brother would say 'what's goin' on nigga?' when seeing me. I would respond 'what's goin' on honkey?' racism? there was none! Never even the word in our thinking. We had the greatest love for each other. Every Friday night in college radio lobby, I was the DJ. We jived, grooved the night away with all the beautiful coeds.

People saying we haven't gained much ground. I can understand that point of view. As a history student, I think some amazing change has happened in a relatively short amount of time on the timeline. Most people didn't think the world would look like this in 50 years. That people would be talking about this stuff so much. That the pendulum would swing and people be (properly) shamed and cancelled for their prejudices. Sometimes it doesn't feel like enough. It isn't. It isn't perfect or all right. But it's moving. People are changing.
Humans will never stop finding ways to be cruel to each other. We also will never stop finding ways to lift each other.
    Peace.

I'm 63 and this beautiful song is about the Vietnam War, this new video makes it look like it's about race. It may fit somewhat, but not the original meaning of the song.
This below is copied from Wikipedia:
What's Going On is a concept album with most of its songs segueing into the next and has been categorized as a song cycle; the album ends with a reprise of the album's opening theme. The narrative established by the songs is told from the point of view of a Vietnam veteran returning to his home country to witness hatred, suffering, and injustice. Gaye's introspective lyrics explore themes of drug abuse, poverty, and the Vietnam War. He has also been credited with promoting awareness of ecological issues before the public outcry over them had become prominent.

Did your mother ever say," I brought you into this world and I can take you out!" When she was REALLY MAD? Marvin got into drugs and was stealing from his family, so his father took him out. He felt it was the only way left. So very sad.

I'm sorry you didn't feel safe @ home. Children should always have a safe place to lay their heads. You are a very smart, caring and compassionate young man. Not alot of men your age possess those qualities. You're a good human. If you decide that children are in your plan, I think you'll be a great Dad.
