Can only echo what all are commenting--maybe the greatest album of all time where every song seems to flow into the next. Love your reaction.

@@africareact I particularly liked your reaction when you realized the song went beyond great music. That's what makes the whole album great.
A similar song that I've can't find a reaction to is below. It was released during the Great Depression that followed World War 1.

Awesome song off an awesome album. Period. Check out the entire What's Going On? album when you can. And check out these other Marvin Gaye classics too: "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", "Sunny", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", "Let's Get It On", "Got to Give It Up" and many more! Plus, check out his duets with Tammi Terrell -- "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing". PS. For me the song speaks to the situation in the US in the late 1960's early 1970's when the album was made. Some things never change of course.

its sad that its still the same story considering how old this album is, we naively thought that we could change things with our songs in the early 1970's. Marvin Gaye has such a sweet voice. He did this album after his brother Frank returned from veitnam and told him some tales of the horrors and he needed to say something which he did with the fantastic album that this track is from. although he is writing about USA is applies worldwide as you were saying

At the bottom of it all is the lives of the decendents of slaves has been hell for 400 years. Fighting everyday to exist and excel. In the richest country in the world, the pressure for us to fail is never ending. Still we rise. Our music, faith, and love for each other has kept us going.

The extended part at the end is from his other incredible song, What’s Going On. Keep in mind that at the time that this song came out like 1972 or so, there was not really a video process to music. That became prominent in the ‘80’s. So this visual combining still photos & videos is someone’s more recent creative adaptation put to the music. Marvin Gaye is a soul music innovator icon in the pantheon of American music through his perspective, with much obviously still relevant decades later today, like prophecy. He has influenced countless artists through his music legacy. Unfortunately his death was tragic. Your analysis of the song & challenges of life for individuals of various nations & societies is highly perceptive. Well done! 👍🏾
