Such a prolific and socially conscious song that’s still relevant today. Marvin Gaye was so amazing, Teena Marie wrote a whole song about him after he died, “My Dear Mr Gaye”.

Great pick, I'm waiting on the biopic movie. This is my favorite MG song. Things he was singing about back then are still going on today. Musical genius doesn't fully describe him. R.I. Power king.

Thanks for your reaction. His extensive music catalog definitely deserves more of a listen. This entire album alone is a masterpiece.
Also, this song is at least 50 years old and is just as relevant today as when it came out. On this song, Marvin played the piano and some of the other instruments and sang the lead and background vocals. That was his style.

Marvin Gaye, was wonderful. It's terrible that his own father killed him. I listen to, Marvin Gaye records for, many, many years before he died.

This has been referred to as a "protest anthem", and has been very noteworthy throughout time. One thing to note, the video is after the fact. While it goes well with the song and depicts many of the ills/drawbacks that some communities have faced on a regular basis, it did not come out with the song at that time.
    Great song!

A very soul moving reaction 🙏🏾👼🏾! I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Marvin Gaye before: Sexual Healing, Nation Anthem (1983), I Heard It Through The Grapevine- Live, Ain't No Mountain High Enough and What's Going On. Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) was released as the third single from Marvin Gaye's 1971 album: What's Going On. It was written by James Nyx Jr and Marvin Gaye. It was produced by Marvin Gaye. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart and #9 on the Hot 100. The music video was directed by Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes aka The Hughes Brothers.
In 1998, co-writer James Nyx Jr. recalled: "Marvin had a good tune, sort of blues-like, but didn't have any words for it. We started putting some stuff in there about how rough things were around town. We laughed about putting lyrics in about high taxes, 'cause both of us owed a lot. And we talked about how the government would send guys to the moon, but not help folks in the ghetto. But we still didn't have a name, or really a good idea of the song. Then, I was home reading the paper one morning, and saw a headline that said something about the 'inner city' of Detroit. And I said, 'Damn, that's it. 'Inner City Blues'".
The song helped Marvin Gaye make history by being one of the few artists to have three or more Top 10 songs off Billboard's Pop Singles chart peaking at #9 and one of the first to have three consecutive #1 hits on Billboard's R&B Singles chart where it stayed for two weeks. Although not certified by the RIAA at that time, all three releases from the his album: What's Going On, gained Platinum status by selling over 1,000,000 copies in the United States.
    Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have nots
    Money, we make it
Fore we see it you take it
    Oh, make you wanna holler
The way they do my life
    Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
    This ain't livin'
    This ain't livin'
No, no baby, this ain't livin'
    No, no, no
    Inflation no chance
    To increase finance
    Bills pile up sky high
Send that boy off to die
    Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
    Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
    Hang-ups, let downs
    Bad breaks, set backs
    Natural fact is
    I can't pay my taxes
    Oh, make me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Yea, it makes me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
    Crime is increasing
    Trigger happy policing
    Panic is spreading
    God knows where
    We're heading
    Oh, make me wanna holler
    They don't understand
    Make me wanna holler
    They don't understand
    Marvin Gaye Info 📰:
Marvin Gay (Gaye) Jr was born on April 2, 1939 in Washington, DC. He passed away on April 1, 1984 in Los Angeles, California. He is known as being a singer, producer and songwriter. He had a four-octave vocal range. He began singing in the church at 4 years of age. His main musical influences were Rudy West of The Five Keys, Clyde McPhatter, Ray Charles and Little Willie John. He also considered Frank Sinatra a major influence in what he wanted to be. He also was influenced by the vocal styles of Billy Eckstine and Nat King Cole. He has been called "the number-one purveyor of Soul music". Many artists including Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Beverly and many others admitted to being heavily influenced by Marvin Gaye's musicianship.
Starting off his musicianship as a drummer doing session work during his tenure with Harvey Fuqua, and his early Motown years, Marvin Gaye's musicianship evolved to include piano, keyboards, synthesizers, and organ. Gaye also used percussion instruments, such as bells, finger cymbals, box drums, glockenspiels, vibraphones, bongos, congas, and cabasas. This became evident when he was given creative control in his later years with Motown, to produce his own albums.
Marvin Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown Records in the 1960s earning him the nicknames: "Prince Of Motown" & "Prince Of Soul". Marvin Gaye's top Motown songs include: Ain't That Peculiar, How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and I Heard It Through The Grapevine. Marvin Gaye also recorded many popular song duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell and Diana Ross. During the 1970s, Marvin Gaye recorded the very popular albums: What's Going On and Let's Get It On, and became one of the first artists on Motown records to break away from the reins of it's in-house production company.
Marvin Gaye's later musical recordings influenced several contemporary R&B subgenres, such as Quiet Storm and Neo Soul. The single: "Sexual Healing", released in 1982 on the album: Midnight Love, won him his first two Grammy Awards of his career. Marvin Gaye's last televised appearances were at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game where he sang "The Star-Spangled Banner", and on the television special: "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" and on Soul Train.
On April 1, 1984 on the eve of his 45th birthday, Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Sr, at their house in Hancock Park, California after an argument. After Marvin Gaye's funeral, his body was cremated at Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills, and his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean. Marvin Gay Sr was initially charged with first-degree murder, but the charges were reduced to voluntary manslaughter following a diagnosis of a brain tumor. Marvin Gay Sr later pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter, and received a six-year suspended sentence and five years of probation. He passed away at a California nursing home in 1998.
Shortly after Marvin Gaye's passing in 1984 Diana Ross released the Lionel Richie penned song: Missing You, dedicated to Marvin Gaye. The Commodores released their 1985 song: Night Shift, dedicated to both Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. Frankie Beverly & Maze based their 1989 album: Silky Soul, on Marvin Gaye, who had served as the band's mentor during their early years in the music industry. The album's title track: Silky Soul, was recorded as a tribute to Marvin Gaye and interpolated Marvin Gaye's melody from his song: "What's Going On". The song was released as a single and became a top-ten hit on the R&B chart. Marvin Gaye's daughter Nona Gaye was featured in the music video.
In 2013, a stage play called: "My Brother Marvin", debuted. It was directed by Clifton Powell and written by Detroit playwright Angela Barrow-Dunlap, the story was conceived by Marvin Gaye's sister Zeola Gaye. The story delves into his childhood, drawing on her personal recollections of their growing up together.
There have been many documentaries detailing Marvin Gaye's life and music career since his passing. In 2021, Warner Bros acquired the rights for a Marvin Gaye bio-pic with Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine reportedly co-producing the project which has been slated for a 2023 release.

      Marvin Gaye Acting Aspirations 🎥:
Marvin Gaye acted in two movies, featuring as a Vietnam veteran in both roles. Marvin Gaye did have acting aspirations and had signed with the William Morris Agency but that only lasted a year as he was not satisfied with the support he was getting from the agency. In his interview with David Ritz, Marvin Gaye admitted being interested in show business particularly when he was hired to compose the soundtrack for the 1972 film: Trouble Man. He said: "No doubt I could have been a movie star, but it was something my subconscious rejected. Not that I didn't want it, I most certainly did. I just didn't have the fortitude to play the Hollywood game: to put myself out there, knowing they would eat my rear end like a piece of meat”.

The music video was shot in Harlem, New York City over the course of five days, featuring visuals of extreme poverty, despair and other inner-city conditions. The Hughes brothers also filmed firefighters putting out a fire, while claiming to police to have been shooting a documentary.
