Inspector Lunge is one of my favourite characters throughout fiction. Chasing Tenma like a madman and slowly but surely having to reconcile with the fact the true culprit is a man who in many ways doesn’t exist. Also his dealing with Roberto went hard

The way those people he treated in the hospital stuck up for the doctor the detective was perusing was a little soapy but also made my eyes water. It was nice to see a good man’s actions reflected by those he helped without provocation or compulsion on the public’s part.

Honestly one of the best parts of this show is the character progression. The beauty of Urusawa’s writing is that in all of his stories (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Billy Bat, etc.) is that all the characters he writes feel so grounded while being caricatures of real people. I remember first watching this show and it’s like you’re growing with the characters. For me it was especially with Lunge and Eva, but hey changed so much throughout the show that it gave me so much comfort oddly enough. Basically what I’m trying to say is that Monster slaps, one of the few 10/10 anime

    • @Scarshadow666
      @Scarshadow666 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

My thoughts as well! Eva's character progression is one of the best, same with Grimmer imo (though I'm probably biased with Grimmer because he's my personal favorite character from the anime)! ^^

@@Scarshadow666 Grimmer was also such a well written character, and honestly had such a beautiful arc I was kinda speechless during his final scene. Personally I related a lot to Lunge so I felt his character was oddly comforting. I think this show has a character for everyone honestly, it just shows all the nuances of human life. I really hope 20th century boys gets an anime adaptation too cuz it would go crazy haha

Roberto also attempts to kill Nina, which would be in open defiance to Johan’s wishes. I’ve heard it mentioned that Roberto intended to kill her because he viewed her as Johan’s greatest weakness and wanted him to be his purest evil form. The fact that Roberto’s agenda diverted in this way made me respect him as a character a lot more. He’s more than just a henchman.

This is something “interesting “ I found, that that is the danger of humans, we will do something if it was our job. For example, take a look at sll the police officer that followed Hitlers orders. When they were questioned, that is what they said, they didn’t “necessarily believe” in genocide like hitler (which I disagree with) but that they were simply following orders, not hatred from their hearts

That is partially true, as those trials also led to some of the most famous social psychology experiments like the Milgram Experiment and Zimbardo/Stanford Prison Experiment (the former having been done a couple times since the '50s and then updated in the '90s/2000s, but both experiments have also been ruled as not fully up to scientific fact as they had replication crisis issues like many social psychology experiments have unfortunately gone through, especially the latter). The Zimbardo/Stanford Prison Experiment even has gone on to have its results disproven in modern sciences because there was a lot that was compromised while the experiment was being done.
The experiments, like the Milgram one, originally were set out to see if anyone could easily be like the police officers that followed Hitlers orders, and the experiments instead showed that how human morals work is more complicated than that (especially since not everyone that did the experiment would have been someone like the police officers).

4:42 Small correction - neither twin has a name at this point, because when we see them collapsing near the Czech-German border (i.e. after leaving the Three Frogs behind), the sister begs her brother to call her by her name, but the boy simply responded "we don't have names". Grimmer, Johan, and Roberto. All expressions of the same monster(s) but differently. Johan became a nihilistic monster through his early dissociation which caused his developing consciousness to latch onto the only thing he could remember being. Grimmer was much the same way, a manufactured monster through trauma and dissociation and abuse and negligence, but one who found meaning in other people and eventually grew to shed his monster. Roberto, not a monster in his own right, is meant to be a foil to Grimmer, a man who, while not explicitly a monster, becomes a monster through his own actions. Like the reverse almost. The story I believe is meant to outline the actions and consequences of the two who had a choice, Grimmer and Roberto, and the story of these two is a commentary of the power of one’s own self determination. Everyone, at some point in their lives, will have their ‘ego’ their entire sense of self ripped from under their feet. I believe the message of this beautiful story is that regardless of what happens to us we are only what we choose to be.

@@user-sg7kg1si8u Christof is less of a main character in the plot. We can tell this by the lack of plot attention given to his ending, so it can be interpreted that the author of monster didn’t believe this character was as important to establishing the end of Monster. For his own character though, Christof is mainly meant to show the psychological impact of kinderheim 511 in its victims because he is not able to feel emotions, but still thanks Tenma for saving his life. He is a necessary character to the plot, not because of his particular qualities but lack thereof, illustrating to us how even normal people can be damaged by the type of psychological torture experienced by these kids in kinderheim 511. He is also meant to show the impact of this organization and how it lingers to this day, illustrating the importance of how we raise our children to society.

Tenma later on, he talks about how there is no one left alive to be able to validate that he is who he says he is. He is the only one left who truly knows that he is in fact who he is. Johan had told him after wolf had given him the name Johan and asked how he was feeling, "I will soon show you." Theres definitely some connection between Johan telling him this and him killing all of the people who knew of wolf and turning him into "The Monster With No Name". He had a name but there was no one left to call him by it.

You hit all the major plot points, but to be honest the parts that hit the hardest for me are the ones where the author shows that there is still good in the world outside of the monster. This is definitely of one the best anime of all time. It’s not you see such a carefully laid out plot, with complex characters, and with a mystery that keeps you hooked till the end. Especially not one in such a realistic setting. I think that’s what makes it so horrific at times. While it’s unlikely for such a thing to happen in theory it could and to certain extent similar things do happen all the time. I really like the doctor as well. A very good representation of a more pacifist ideology without making you want to pull your hair out over their choices. It’s a depiction of a realistically good person that wants to protect and save people in whatever he can.

i usually cant stand listening to documentary youtubers or people that make video essays but you've successfully changed me on that. at least about you in particular. usually these video essays I try to watch the commentator is talking to you in an almost degrading way. a way that kinda makes it look like they're trying to tell you that you shouldve known this information and that you're dumb for not knowing it. just today i finished watching monster and without a doubt it's my favorite anime. im usually not very good at watching shows no matter how much i love them because i tend to forget details too fast even if theyre importnant to the story and matter to me. i was looking for a good recap on monster to find any details id missed and you opened my eyes to a lot of them. i thought that i was doing good keeping track of the whole story but because i forget stuff really easily im glad i had this video to help me with that.

I love the little viniettes of the different characters who get wrapped up in the plot. Their stories are short yet significant. Truly an example of mastery over storytelling.

I remember this being one of the handful of anime series I watched, I think it must have been 13 years ago. I remember it being very dark and captivating and it left an impression but I have no idea what happened anymore lol. Looking forward to watching this video as a recap of sorts.

But on a serious note, fantastic video. I missed so much of it when I watched the series, although I still loved it, but this gives me a whole new level of appreciation for the brilliance. It took to come up with this deep layered narrative as well as the incredible character/world building.

Fantastic work. I've watched Monster 3 or 4 times over the years. I first saw it when I was only 14, and so I couldn't grasp all these complexities at the time. This was an incredible video to check my understanding. What a sad yet beautiful story. (Now to get the manga volumes and finally read the source material!)

Summed up the series very well! Monster is one of those things that makes sense in my head, but turns into a jumbled mess when I try to explain its depth.
Also, I hope you don't mind but Lunge's name is pronounced Loon-geh, and not Loonj.

The only issue I have with this manga (I read the manga only) is that Tenma felt to me like somewhat a Mary Sue. He's the best brain surgeon, he is brave, bold, learns to shoot like hell, runs like an athlete... But indeed, he needed to be a bit like that for the pacing to work, and it's a marvelous manga.

And him: "Ah shit I guess ima kill those responsible for my other traumas and kms also."

I have PTSD and Borderline Personality disorder. It a roller-coaster of emotion hypger vigilance, straight up aggression. Ive jammed by fingers into guys eyes sockets and choked people till they have blacked out, and honestly been to the point i thought of maming a person or wven just killing them. Ive actualy been cleared for my actions as being self defense.it been a rough life ive been stabbed 3x times and the only thing that saved me was that i grabbed the knife with my bear hand knowing it was going into my neck if i didnt, and fought for another 5 minutes holding the knife until i felt my blood pressure drop from bloodloss and just started running, ive delt with savages and dirty administrators who cared for nothing but money they even got some people killed. Im not exactly like other people Military school and a first reaponders cert. Ive seen all the way to the bottom of the abyss that s humanity and its very easy to lose control, ive almost felt like ive been driven to the point that i feel i need to be much much more pro-active in my defense and others. I can ki da understand Johan, hes primarily hyper vigilant, hes doing what he knows to run away from his past.

I have a theory, when I finished this anime back in 2021 (there's probably a ton of people who've maybe thought of this theory before, or maybe it's a confirmed fact) it's about the kids having their sets of "skills" or "powers" they've gained when they were in kinderheim, for example the magnificent steiner one with grimmer, the split personality and the strength he "gains" or shows when he's in that state, and roberto the way he's fckin big yet he's so stealthy and the kid that idolized johan having the same ability or skills of manipulation johan has/had, though he's not on Johan's level since he was not the prodigy johan was

monster did something a horror didn't do for me in long time, i must say that the fact that part of it played out in my country helped with that, but when i saw Liebert close to kids, it just instilled this fear for what can happen, the dread.
if i see lets say, Jason Voorheese around kids, i know hell just kill them but with Liebert?
it quickly became one of my favorite anime and horrors.
