    I've always valued how the Monogatari series highlights the perspectives of adolescence compared to adulthood and how teenagers grow through life. Every non-adult character sees their world through fairly black and white lenses, while the perspectives we get from Kaiki and Oshino are nuanced, grey, and not always correct but broadly consistent, the way most adults live. Kaiki and Oshino both live consistently with their own values (Kaiki toward skepticism, egoism, and perspectivism and Oshino toward harmony, self-determination, and respect), but aren't so rigid to them. Kaiki's involvement in the story highlights this best, as he's seen by Araragi and Senjougahara as a petty fake villain, when he's truly just a middle-aged shabby (tsundere) conman. He genuinely tried to help Senjougahara by (though this is more implied) bringing the crab diety to her to help a young girl endure a terrible life. This ends up being a blunder on his part, but he then succeeds when he helps Sengoku move on from the life she's imposed on herself. He didn't really change across the series so much as we just saw more of who he really was.
    However, we see all the adolescent characters gradually change and mature in how they view the world as they have more experiences, yet they always maintain that teenage stubborn self-righteousness. It's so realistic to how teenagers actually think and develop mentally, where most anime or young adult series fail to, either by making teenagers think and act like irrational adults, or portraying them like overemotional simplistic caricatures.
    Also SHAFT is based in general, making a HEAVILY dialogue-driven series constantly look gorgeous and keep your attention.

    • @hardgay7537
      @hardgay7537 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I like it as a sort of built-in gatekeeping. Can't get past the loli jokes? Tough, Araragi sees lolis as defenseless and more relatable as part of his character development, just like he hyperfocuses on female bodies because he's a horny teenager. It's a stage he has to grow past. But actually explaining that to people is like telling them to "git gud" at Dark Souls. Simple words from one fan to another do little to actually help someone get past the rough stuff. Either you sit down and co-op it with them, showing them until they're ready, or they bounce off because either it's not their preference or they can't handle it yet.
      Also, I never showed my little sister this series, but the mere threat of brushing her teeth for her kept her cavity free. 10/10 series, would recommend.

      its one of the most important lessons this story gives imo. how it deconstructs and actively criticizes koyomi's saviour complex as being a self destructive thing disguised as selfless heroics. it's not that he is in the wrong for wanting to help people, it shows that it's actually one of his positive traits, it's what made hitagi fall in love with him.
      the problem is that he doesn't just want to help people. he wants to actively save people from themselves, he wants to die for their sake. he does this because he hates himself and doesn't think he is worthy of the help he tries to give others he actively denies it for a lot of the series.
      this is why oshino leaves town, because he sees koyomi's cycle of self destruction and knows that there is only one person who can save him from it, himself. adhering to meme's philosophy of helping others to save themselves he helps koyomi save himself by leaving & letting him figure things out on his own.
      koyomi is willing to die for anyone who's having a rough time, he puts his mind & body on the line time and time again for others because he wants to die a hero in the eyes of others, that is a huge problem not just for him but others as well and it's pretty much what the entire first main big story arc of Monogatari encompassing First, Second & Final seasons is leading towards resolving, and the way Koyomi resolves it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in a story

    This is easily the best video dissecting the story/theme/character writing of Monogatari that i have seen.
    I enjoyed the very clear and concise manner in which you were able to keep focus on the core narrative of the series, that being Koyomi's constant internal struggle towards self-worth and acceptance, and how his short comings and conflicts affect all of the people in his life.
    The fact that all of these different people he has a connection with, all find themselves facing similar issues, and all end up either facing them or coping and stuffing them away, which is where Araragi falls, that's the reality of dealing with personal problems, and the maturity that is necessary to resolve them head on is what Araragi takes this entire series to learn.

    I want to say this video essay, distilled like this and in chronological order has brought me back to realize it actually is a really interesting anime adaptation with worthwhile things to say about mental health, peoples personal motivations, flaws, and how they relate to others. Loved this video thank you so much!

    • @Lin_Eileen
      @Lin_Eileen 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      getting frustrated with this story is a totally fair reaction because imo the series is transgressive, it actively is trying to frustrate the reader/viewer in order to make them look at the series with a more inquisitive mind instead of mindlessly consuming it. a lot of art house media does this because it's an effective way at drawing out more honest and emotional responses from people, but that doesn't mean those responses must be positive. having a negative reaction to things like koyomi's perversions and fan service is just as valid as having positive reaction to it or no reaction at all... it's all meant to make you think and express yourself honestly. it's the beauty of this story is it's so open for interpretation and I think the vast majority of interpretations people have hold some validity to them.

Haven't caught up with the more recent seasons, but put on one I didn't recognize the other day to show a friend and it just so happened to be a scene with one of the sisters in the bath and he was like, "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

    First of all
    Thank you for this amazing video for a series that brought sooo much happiness to my childhood and pretty much the only anime I bothered to keep up since.
    But in a detailed story like this it just sticks out so much more how nadeko snake was a weird ark.
    Nadeko caused her own problem, not by rejecting someone but by doing it so bluntly and by doing odd rituals in a snake shrine. And even if you watch the ark as a situation where araragi caused a problem so he has to solve it it still leaves the cursing of both nadeko and the boy as their own fault. Nadeko is the only chapter where someone got clearly and obviously saved by a unrelated party.
    Nadeko didn't face anything but araragi in little cloths on.
    Karen faced her hypocrisy
    Tushiki arguably wasn't even a problem and more a question
    So nadeko always stuck out for me

    What luck on my part, i had dropped the series for a long time right after finishing nisemonogatari, and you come in with a perfect refresher syllabus when im considering picking it back up.
    Im pretty sure i did manage to understand the series properly on my first watch, but it was still fairly helpful to see it taken from a linear story perspective, especially without me needing to watch through borderline porn while my mind is still reeling from trying to figure out the plot.

    I do like how you present monogatari and I agree that this is basically what the series tries to convey, however in practice I think there are some pretty big problems with it that you strategically omitted (not that I blame you).
    I'm of course refering to the fanservice, and specifically the many, m a n y unnecessary scenes where children are sexualised for no justifyable reason.
    To be clear, there is a lot to like about monogatari, but I cannot in good conscience recomend this show. I'd say kizumonogatari is probably my favorite entry and largely because it's the only part that adequately criticises Araragi for his obsession with weak little girls. But while Shinobu calls him out on it, he ends up doubling down and subjecting her to a pitiful life of a hopeless child that is entirely dependent on him for survival (and sustenance), which she very much didn't consent to.
    It's a really unnerving scene (and intentionally so), but it only gets worse from there. The sexual tension between Araragi and Shinobu, not to mention Mayoi, Yotsugi and HIS SISTERS is something that feels like it really shouldn't be in the show.
    I really can't say the show ever properly adresses this. Araragi is judged for his actions, but not as much for his weird fetishes, and for whatever reason he kisses every single loli in the show (they never show him kissing Senjougahara btw). Some of these scenes are downright painful to watch, but there are also a good deal of really amazing ones.
    It's a weird show. I want to like it, but I also can't stomach it sometimes. I don't judge anyone that can though.
    And I know the lolis are 500 years old but I don't think anyone is buying that joke anymore. Also some of them are legitimate kids and his sisters. He also time travells and sexually harasses child Hanekawa because of course that had to happen.

    • @RealAXork
      @RealAXork 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am interested to hear how people cope about this though, I know I did for a while and hey, maybe I'm wrong and there really was a good reason for that toothbrush scene. And groping Mayoi as a gag. And all the feet.

    • @socksensei
      @socksensei  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      there isn't any justifiable reason really and comes off disturbing but that's kind of the goal. It's a culture barrier type of thing. Eastern nations like Japan don't see a problem with making jokes like that in fiction and find them funny where Western nations tend to take it more seriously and get offended. I'd caulk it up to the east separates fiction from reality very harshly in media, and the west applies their values to fiction more strictly, and so what wouldn't cause any disruptions in Japan would in America. As someone who separates fiction and nonfiction pretty strongly, I even find scenes in Monogatari weird and disturbing which was kind of the point of writing Koyomi that way. I wish they didn't have it, but it's kind of not up to me. If the author wanted to make those kind of jokes, the author made those kind of jokes.

      @@socksensei I see. I suppose that's fair. It's not like I dislike the shock humor in monogatari over all and it's a big part of it's identity in a way. But it does go a bit too far with it at times in my opinion. Though I do appreciate how it mostly uses fanservice to ridiculize itself instead of just exploiting it like most anime. It has the right idea but the delivery doesn't always hit I guess.

    • @Unspecifiedweeb
      @Unspecifiedweeb หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're taking the humor scenes wayy to seriously. The kissing scenes are mostly just there for humor/fanservice, and neither of those scenes seem to characterize araragi as having genuine attraction towards those characters.
      The "sexual tension" that you speak of also isn't really a thing. The only two characters that have genuine sexual tension with araragi are Hanekawa and Senjoughara... the remainder of the fanservice scenes are either done for gag purposes (toothbrush scene), characterization (Shinobu bathing scene), or plot set up (yotsugi foot to the face) often times doing multiple things simultaneously.
      Could the show have changed the fanservice scenes to make them more SFW? Sure... but it would be a fundamentally different show as the "ecchi" element is kind of vital to its identity.

    "He lies and tells Koyomi to not worry about him being Hitagi's first love"
    Spoiler:
    This is clearly shown to not be much of a lie later on. And once you've seen more, suddenly Hitagi wanting to keep Koyomi away from Kaiki makes more sense, as to not unveil this past chapter in her life, as well as the secret meetings she'd have with him in the future to solve the snake problem and the way they act towards each other, all the while having told Araragi of how much she hates Kaiki and making him stay away from Araragi, who likely not only would get agry at Kaiki for what Hitakgi told him about the conman, but also because Kaiki's words during Karen Bee probably stuck to him, and he is not only jealous, but also has to fight for his spot in Hitagi's heart (even though she'd only love Araragi), and this is a paralel to Hitagi defending her spot in Araragi's heart from Hanekawa, as you'd see throughout the series, where she tries to be more like the ideal Hanekawa (haircut, etc) to please Araragi.

Like the background, the poses, facial expressions, the wording, the metaphors etc. but this series will always be in my Top 3 anime series.
