Growing up, I immaturely took Spike as a role model, someone to be. Now, as a grown man, I realized he's supposed to be a cautionary tale. To not let the past hold us from forming meaningful connections in our present, to make it better for today. _To carry that weight..._

He was able to walk away from a past, but when that past came back to haunt him, the thought of a happy ending caused him to go down the rabbit hole, because he wanted to believe he could still make it happen. In a way, Julia's last words could suggest that this is the end of Spike's dream in a sense, that the thought of him ever being with Julia again is now long gone. When he disappeared, he knew she was still alive, so in the back of his mind he held onto that hope that maybe he could achieve that happiness but sadly when he took his chance, Viscous snatched it away from him. It is sad he let the past hold such a tight hold over him when he could of continued to make those new memories with the crew of the Bebop but I think Spike also understood that it's not so much he gave up.
He knew that Viscous would continue to chase him, even if he went back to the Bebop crew, Viscous had already shown that he was more than willing to kill Jet and Faye, make them collateral damage. So sure, he could run away but then the past of Viscous would remain. You could say he went down a tragic hero, because it's completely plausible that he wasn't just blinded by revenge in killing Viscous but also as a means to protect those friends he had made on the Bebop. He sacrificed his own life so that he wouldn't hold back Jet and Faye who had carved their own path, while of course they would of welcomed him into the family they had made, I don't think Spike would want to live with the fear that his comrades could become targets of The Syndicate especially with the power grab that Viscous had taken.

Only issue I have is that it is never indicated that spike and vicious didn’t get along when they were both in the syndicate. If anything the show indicates the opposite. They got along quite well and were likely even friends . The show also indicates that prior to meeting Julia spike was quite a bit more ruthless and cutthroat. This is part of why vicious is so mad at him. His best friend not only betrayed him by taking his lover but became a completely different person at the same time. “I bled all that kind of blood away”. “THEN WHY ARE YOU STILL ALIVE??!!!!”

Cowboy Bebop and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will forever be comfort shows for me because they were some of the first anime actually complex and nuanced anime I watched and really carried my enjoyment of anime when I was first really getting into it. Cowboy Bebob doesn't make me cry everytime I hear the music though, and a large chunk of the soundtrack is on my jazz playlist.

Having watched the show many times and knowing most of this information is condensed into single episodes, laying it out chronologically certainly puts some new perspective on it. I finished the show for the first time last night. What a masterpiece!! One thing I liked about Bebop was how it doesn’t hold your hand. It tells the story through the music and the visuals. Instead of exposition dumps, there are many quiet and atmospheric moments. However, the cryptic storytelling can leave the viewers a little confused, so your video was very helpful for me.

This is a great breakdown of the show. Well done for covering my favourite (by far) seinen anime.
I used to see it as a warning, not to let the past consume your future. The ending harrowed me a lot when I was much younger.
Nowadays, I look at this show with a more sympathetic light. Jet's maturity at moving on from his past hurt, and spike using his past to better his future (until it catches up with him)
A very reflective tale that crosses boundaries of age, a classic.

Looking at cowboy bebop as a very convoluted love story is my favorite perspective.
Born into a bad life, knowing nothing but bad things. Accepting it all until he met a woman, fell in love. And started to realize the life he was living.. wasn’t a life at all.
He tried to escape his past with the woman to begin a new life.. and failed. And when they were separated, he drifted between two worlds. One in the past, one in the present.
Then, cowboy bebop begins… the real story of the tiger striped cat..

I think you got which of Spike's eyes sees the past mixed up. His artificial eye is stuck in the past where he lost it, similar to how amputees can feel the phantom pain from when they lost their limb.

Fayes arc hit a bit different as an adult. When i watched it back in 2020 during pandemic her story resonated with me on an emotional level. Every time i had wat hed it prior, her story never hit me. Jet I understood especially being in the military and having seen situations where someone tries to do the right thing but higher ups have their own agenda and favorites, Spike i understood because i had things in my past holding me down and back. Faye took awhile but man her story is deep. Seeing your childhood self leave such a powerful message was eye opening

What I was always curious about was that since she was rich there should be some funds or stock or bond that might be good to her. It would have been funny for it to be the exact amount she owed to the hospital. But would still owe the debt of her fake lover.

The one thing absent from this is Vicious’s motivations. We never see much explained of him but he equally loved Julia and was also pressed upon a life of violence against his will that ultimately made him the villain that was needed for the story.
Spike and Vicious easily could have switched roles.
