I believe that's the only guy that really shows and gives tips how to training a dog/puppy.. after watching thausand of other video. I have just got my puppy lab and very happy I found this channel!!!
The best training videos to train your pet by yourself. I have followed Nate since day 1 and my 9 month old shepherd is amazing and listens tremendously. The owner needs to put the time in. The dog can't do it alone.

Hi Nate. I have watched most of your video although i didnt have a dog. I started fostering a rescue dog few months ago and your channel helped me so much. I will foster couple of puppies (13-14weeks) in a week. I have crates but i wonder if i need to get dog pen when no one is home. What would you recommend?
I found this series because in about to get a dog and wanted a good effective way to train my new puppy. I see there's a vid on crate training, and introducing the puppy to the house. I'm curious how you'd go about the intro and crate training when you 1st bring them home and you have yet to teach then any markers. Would you just use pressure and lead training to get them used to the new place then start training your markers? Or would you train them your markers, then introduce them to the house?
These are utterly amazing training videos… I’ve read in the comments people say, “I can’t believe this is free!” I echo that, with a shout. Lol. I get my Akita pup next week. I’ve watched about 20hrs of content is my guess, then I find this playlist, thanks for that!, and thank you for providing this invaluable resource. T-minus 1 week until I get to use watching your series of training videos. So excited! I must’ve watched each of your puppy series 10 times. Just writing notes and memorizing how you do things. So confident after watching you
@@NateSchoemer thanks man, seriously love your videos. First actual puppy I’ve ever got so I’m a little nervous, but have a huge confidence boost after watching your stuff. I definitely want to send you some videos of him once he’s trained up, so I can give credit where it’s due!
Hi Nate! Thank you so much for all the insightful content you have been sharing. It's been super helpful! Unfortunately, I've only happened upon this video today. Our german shepherd will soon be 6 months. I was wondering if I should go about this training in the same way as a puppy that would be in the ideal window for this?
Great video , great delivery. Will implement thos today as my puppy is learning leash training before he goes out in 2 weeks. What do you class as high value treats?
Question: should we get up periodically throughout the night to let the puppy out, or should we keep her crated all night? We're picking up a 12 week old German Shepherd/Catahoula Cur mix on Thursday and we've already learned a lot from finding and watching your videos today. I realize I did a lot of stuff wrong in the past with dogs, and I'm determined to do it right with this one. I have rheumatoid arthritis and want to start teaching her to be service dog like as soon as we get her. I still have more good days than bad, but I am getting worse, and I like the idea of training this fur missile to help me out.
What treats do you use? I’m getting a puppy in a few days and this is my first dog ever. I’ve been watching all your videos starting from bottom to top.
Is this training started immediately with an 8 week old puppy once they’re brought home? Also, should we be doing this with every house they’re introduced to as a puppy (i.e. lake house, significant other’s house, etc.)? Thanks so much for these videos!!
1. Do i need to repeat introcuding him to the new home or only once. 2. When teaching a dog commands do i always have to reward with food, for example i tell him to sit and he does it correctly, or can i stop with time. Thanks ive you awnser, keep making more videos like this!!!😊😊👍🏼
Thank! 1) It depends on the dog, but I usually only do this process once, but I will keep a tab on the puppy when he's loose in the house. A tab is just a 6-12 inch leash. 2) th-cam.com/video/a2OBoptftYs/w-d-xo.html
Hey! First of all, what really great videos! This is going to be very helpful so thank you very much! We are going to get our puppy (sheltie) in a few weeks but we need to make a 5h drive with them. So we were wondering, do you suggest holding the puppy on our lap or in a crate in the car? Or what is the best way to transport a puppy, that doesn't know us yet? Also, how many times would you stop on the way to let the puppy out of the car for a while? Because 5h is long.
I always like to travel with dogs in their crates or with a harness on buckled into the seatbelt. You can hold the puppy if you like, just be sure to be safe on the road. Getting into a car accident with a loose dog or puppy can be very dangerous for the dog and the humans. More likely than not, the puppy will sleep most of the time. If the puppy starts whining, then pull over and give the puppy a potty break. I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel. :)
Hey Nate? What should I do when I get my dog? Like do I let the adapt to their environment and then train it? Also how how I know when my puppy is hungry or needing to use the restroom, also how do I train them to use a pad?
Hi Nate, hope you are well. We may be adopting a 4 yr old dog from a shelter who has only ever lived in the shelter. Should we train him as if he is a puppy like the above video?
Yes. I follow the same step-by-step scientific proven process with every dog that I train. 1) Teach the markers (engagement training) 2) Teach luring 3) Teach leash pressure 4) Add the verbal command 5) Teach the stay with leash pressure 6) add corrections (If desired) for reliability In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc. Being able to adjust for each dog’s specific needs is considered the art of dog training. Because of this, not all techniques work on all dogs; and as a result, you have to be able to adjust accordingly. For example; a dog with a very high level of perseverance will continue to work through a difficult task to get a reward-while other dogs may give up early.
As long as they are being supervised, then it's okay to leave the leash on in the beginning for training. I would suggest using a tab. It's a short leash that's less likely to get caught on furniture. You can order one, but i prefer to just buy a cat leash and then cut it to the length that I want.
Hi Nate! Your videos are absolutely fantastic and I've been bingeing them as I wait for my new pup to be ready for pickup. I have a question though - in this video it looks like your puppy is already accustomed to the marker cues that you're giving. What would I do when I bring home a puppy that doesn't know the markers or the leash yet? Should I just act like the dog knows the markers and reward like you do?
Yes, you can, Since the puppy will be on the leash, it will be easy to prevent him/her from doing any undesired behaviors. It's about developing good house manners right from the start. :)
@@NateSchoemer Thanks so much!! Your videos have been so informative and helpful and I really love the way you interact with your dogs and explain the basics! Can't wait to see more from you :)
@@NateSchoemer would you say it's best to spend an hour teaching a new puppy in the garden first on day 1, getting them comfortable with the markers and some movement then bringing them into the house showing them round and introducing the crate?
Thank you soooo much for your training videos!!! I am getting a german shepherd puppy next week and I have been watching your videos and I love the way you teach!! Thank you so much! I can't wait to try it out on our new puppy! I will post updates after I get her. I'm sure these training videos will make a huge impact!
Awesome! Thank you for sharing and I'm happy the videos are helpful. I'm sure you're going to do a great job with your new pup when you bring him/her home! :)
If you can, that would be great, but not necessary. The leash pressure should still prevent the puppy from practicing bad behaviors, even if they havent been trained on it yet.
Can you plsssss posts some more puppy videos, i am getting a 6 weeks old so am a bit nervous although your videos make so much sense and i hope i can follow your tips. Also getting my puppy at 6weeks can i train them the same way as a 8 week old puppy any tips you can share i would be so grateful, thank you
Thanks! I have a lot of video in my basic obedience series working with puppies, so be sure to check those out. :) I don't like to start training a dog until they're comfortable in the new environment. I also don't like to start until they are at least 8 weeks of age. During the first 2 week between 6-8 weeks of age, focus on bonding, play, socializing, and confidence building.
Hi Nate! I’ll be getting a standard poodle puppy in about 10 weeks. Should I get a wired crate with a divider or a plastic one like the one used in the video? If the plastic one is better, what size should I start off with for an 8 week old puppy? I like the one you use in the video. Thanks!
Do you have to teach your dog leash pressure before you can do this free shaping exercise? If so, how do you introduce to a home if the puppy that hasn’t learned leash pressure yet?
I was so excited to do this with my puppy that I brought home two weeks ago, but he is completely hyper all the time, biting and playing with the leash and is so quick to pick things up or jump up and drag things down that it's so far from this training video with wonderfully calm Derby... I have ended up so far from the training methods yelling no all the time and exhausting myself. :( I wish you could do some of the training videos with a 3-4 month old hyper puppy so I would know how to cope with the everyday stuff. (Actual training with food, new places, people, animals and off leash walking on the country side is working like a dream though!)
How long do they need to stay in the crate? Also you leash train for couple of weeks but where do you put the dog if you dont have time at the moment to watch him? Last question should i wake up to let my pup go to the garden in the night ?
Two weeks would help get your dog comfortable in the new environment. However, You would still want to leave randomly throughout the day, so the dog doesn't get comfortable with you being there 24/7, which could cause separation anxiety when you go back to work.
Our puppy was not given anything other than special chihuahua puppy food, due to their sensitive stomachs. Not sure as soon as we bring him home that i want to introduce treats/snacks right away. But will hold onto this info maybe we can substitute with a food type snack
If you bring a young pup into the house but you have a lot of stairs. Should one carry them up and down until they are bigger or let them do it on their own?
I plan to train a puppy to eventually be a service dog for my 5 year old daughter who is a full time wheelchair user. Because my daughter is so young, is it ok to first have the crate in my room (so I can take the puppy out at night and calm her while not disturbing my daughter’s sleep) and then move the crate to my daughter’s room once the dog can hold its bladder through the night? Does moving the location of the crate create any kind of confusion for the dog?
Yes, that's how I would do it. The one adjustment I would make; If you have to crate your puppy during the day, my suggestion would be to crate the pup in your daughter's room. This way the adjustment will be much easier. I hope this helps! Cheers!
Hey I’m a first time dog owner and I’m going to get a German Shepard/husky mix puppy. I also live in a condo in a gated community. Any helpful tips or advice for that type of situation ?
Thank you so much for your videos! I shared it with all my dog owning friends. I noticed you didn’t use a correction “no” when the puppy was doing something you didn’t want. When I introduce my puppy should I just apply pressure and not use a correction since he will not be familiar with the markers yet?
Thank you! You can use the marker. I would start with a marker that predicts leash pressure, just like how I teach the stay command. :) Later after the dog knows all the rules of the house, then the marker can predict a correction if needed. :)
Hi Nate! First of all, thanks for the incredible content you're giving us. One doubt though: you said to keep the crate on your bedside when the puppy comes home. But what if the intended permanent bed of the dog is in a little house in the backyard? Cheers from Brazil!
Hi Nate - everything here is such sensible advice1 However do you have any advice regarding the first few days of bringing a puppy home when there are already 2 pet cats here in situ? It will be hard to introduce the puppy to the house whilst also trying to keep it separated from the cats. It will also be hard to confine either animal to just one room. Do you have any advice or is there a video on this? Thanks so much Nate
Nothing specific because everyone's home setup is going to be slightly different. Just try to keep each experience fun and positive for the new pup. :)
Mercy! That floofbottom!!!!!! ♡♡♡ good boi! I love your videos... i know basic training and its great to see that the way i do things is accurate! Lol 😆 getting a lil dog "fix" w these cuties!! I miss dogs after this pandemic lol Thank you for these videos
Hi Nate, I have been following you channel for the last few months , prepping for the arrival of my Amstaff puppy , ur channel is amazing !! So my puppy arrived yesterday, he is 6weeks now , when do you think I should start basic obedience ? Or should I just keep it engagement and marker conditioning ? Will appreciate ur insight . Thanks
Thanks for supporting and following the channel, I appreciate that. At six weeks of age, you can start luring with the puppy, loading the markers, and bonding. I like to start the more formal training when they are 8 weeks of age, but always keeping it fun. I hope that helps and thank you for supporting my work, I really appreciate it. If I'm still using continual reinforcement with a dog, then I like to use either Stella and chewy's freeze-dried coated kibble, or vital essentials freeze-dried bites. Lastly, it's not the healthiest, but the consistency makes it great for training. Bil•Jac frozen raw. You can see most of the products that I use with my dogs on my website here: www.nateschoemer.com/store
I only do this when I first bring the pup home. However, if I have the puppy out of the crate I have eyes on, so I can show the puppy what they can and can't do in the house.
Hi Nate, 3 weeks until our new GSD is home at 8 weeks. I've seen/read that we shouldnt be incorporating leash pressure until a few months in. Would we just do the same on a harness if this is the case?
Hey Matt! Thanks for reaching out and for the question. I'm sure you must be very excited to be getting your puppy soon! I've used leash pressure on dozens of puppies and never had any issues, but maybe we need to change the name of the technique to "leash cue" because that's really what it is. It's a physical cue to get the dog to perform a specific behavior. I love to use a harness for drive building, confidence building, increasing frustration for specific behaviors, as well as exercising. All of these require the dog to pull, that's why we use a harness for those activities. Check out the video on teaching leash pressure. The process in the video makes it very easy for the puppy to learn. I hope this helps and thanks again! th-cam.com/video/9L8tK7mSD10/w-d-xo.html
@@NateSchoemer Very excited and the weeks seem to drag! Thanks for the reply. I've signed up to your online courses and its great, well laid out and step by step. I'll check out the video 👍
I’m a big fan Nate, I’m getting my new puppy tomorrow. I don’t want to over complicate things but should I do all this now that’s he’s 8wks? That dog looks bigger lol
Thanks! This is a guideline. You can adjust as needed for your puppy. I cover some more info in version 3 of my manual. If you email me, I'll send you a copy. Thanks! NateSchoemer@gmail.com
You can use leash pressure as well, but you need to be sure to teach the pup leash pressure before using it to encourage the pup to go up the stairs: th-cam.com/video/9L8tK7mSD10/w-d-xo.html :)
Thanks! I give my dogs/puppies bones like these. Just be sure to take them away after they eat the raw meat, so they don't grind down their teeth. bit.ly/3iKzaJ0
Nate - LOVE the videos and your work with dogs! Question, and sorry if its been asked and answered somewhere before... I've spoken for a Malinois that should be coming home soon, do you have recommendations for bed/pad/liner for the crate for my new little "maligator"? Thanks for your work and sharing on FB and TH-cam!
Thanks Ann! Usually I start with cheap blankets or even towels. I do this because Maligators are good and ripping up bedding. Lol! If he's good with the cheap blankets or towels, then you can upgrade to some nicer bedding. I hope that helps! :)
Hey Nate! Love your videos, man. Really insightful, especially since I'm preparing for my new vizsla puppy next week. One question for you, though: What are your thoughts of using play pens in coordination with crate training? I'm asking because while I'm working from home, I obviously can't be with my pup 24/7, but was thinking of using a play pen with her crate.
Thanks! Just keep in mind that crate training is house and potty training. If a puppy is fine in a small space and there are no issues, then it's fine. If you have the puppy in the playpen and he chews the carpet and goes potty in the playpen, then he may not be ready yet for that type of freedom. You have to adjust according to your dog's progression. I hope that helps!
Hi, I'm getting a GSD but it will be living outside only. Would these steps be the same? Keep them on the leash around the garden for the first couple of weeks?
It will help make it clear to your pup what the rules are. For example, if you want the pup to not go into certain areas or if you want him to potty is one specific spot. :) You can also use a tab. A tab is a 6 inch to 12 inch leash. It helps prevent the leash from getting caught on things. I hope that helps and thanks for supporting my channel. Cheers!
How old is the puppy in this video he seems very switched on and obedient straight away im getting a gsd puppy next month and I've been watching your videos in preparation for him
@@NateSchoemer thanks for the reply much appreciated when I get my puppy he will only be just over 8 weeks old how many weeks would you recommend keeping him on his lead for doing similar to this video so he learns what to do and not to do
Great job but this was done with a puppy that already had some understanding of markers and leash pressure. Majority of new puppies being first time on leash and in new environment, wouldn't act like this, it would have been nice to see puppy coming in for first time and first time with leash on since this puppy didn't show any signs of being nervous or anxious with leash on or new environment..
Thanks, and yes, you're correct. I did a little bit of work with the puppy before bringing him into the house. In addition, the breeder helped with the initial imprinting to make the process as smooth as possible. When done correctly, the leash pressure is very easy to teach. One can bring the puppy home, do some basic communication training in the yard and then introduce the puppy to the house. :)
I have watched way to many videos in one weekend and can't keep them straight, But in one video I thought you said it's better to give the terminal command in the first parts of training. I would assume introducing them to your house is one of those and that he has some training and that's why you are using him for your video. Toni, my female shephard (4 weeks old, her mom is a former service dog), already shows her will to explore when I visit her. Second question? What is the best way to get her to bond to me. Some say put her on her back (her mom doesn't like this) some to breath in her face. Some to make sure she smells you. I get limited visits so want to make the best of it. I have already scheduled visits to farms around me when I bring her home as you advised in your video, since I don't have animals right now being gone for work for the last 2.5 yers, but usually do.
When I start the dogs formal training, I always start with engagement training. th-cam.com/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/w-d-xo.html One of the best ways to bond with a dog is through play and training. th-cam.com/video/OvdKDE326gs/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps! Cheers!
@@NateSchoemer thank you very much for replying Nate, honestly your videos are a God send, lots of misinformation out there. The let them whine alone is a big one. Lots of thanks from Australia. Cade
Nate my 11 year old golden just bit my 12 week old gs puppy on the snout and drew blood what can i do to prevent this from happening again and will have any affect on the puppy in the future thank u so much
Hi Raul. Yes, it could affect the puppy, but it's not guaranteed. It depends a lot on the dogs genetics. If the older dog was growling at the puppy and the puppy wasn't backing off, then its possible for a dog to escalate it to a bite. I would keep an eye on them when they are together, so I can be sure the puppy isn't being too invasive towards the older dog.
On the first night do you close the crate door? As I feel takes time to train puppy with door closed for long periods like all night. :) We get our puppy sept :)..cannot wait these vids are amazing Thank you
Hi, Sandra. Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, I close the crate on the first night, because I can't watch the puppy all night and I don't want the puppy to start developing bad habits while I'm sleeping. Such as chewing on furniture or relieving him/herself on the carpet. Crate training is for two main purposes; Potty training and house training. I hope that helps and thank you for supporting my work, I really appreciate it. If my training videos have been helpful in any way, consider becoming a patron to help support my channel. Hi Nate, great content … can multiple people train a dog (1 training by one person and the next by another person) … I am getting a German Sheppard and I would like my teen daughters to participate
When the dog doesn't know the out command or the house rules yet, I use the leash pressure. Then I will teach the dog the out command. th-cam.com/video/MbVJJA5wy1Q/w-d-xo.html
i have a big dog's bed for my 8 weeks German shepherd, should I buy a crate? and if i should, the German shepherd grows pretty fast, so I'm gonna buy another one for when he's gonna be bigger or I just won't use it anymore?
If you want to potty train and house train your puppy, then yes I would get a crate. When I am potty training a puppy, the crate is just big enough for them to stand up, turn around, and lay down. As the dog grows, I get them a larger crate. The size only matters when the dog is still potty training. Once the dog is fully potty trained then you can have as large of a crate as you would like. This helps prevent the dog from going potty on one end of the crate and sleeping on the other end. Having the crate smaller teaches the puppy to hold their bladder. I hope this helps! 🙏😁🐶🐕
I have heard that puppies shouldn’t walk stairs on their own in the beginning. Whats your take on this? Do you let your dogs climb stairs as much as they want? Restrict and free up as they grow? Need tips for Rottweiler pup. Love your vids :)
My puppy is relentless w biting that no amount of feeding treats or yanking the leash works he just gets more rowdy and more biting. I can’t sit down w out him biting and jumping even w teaching. I wished my puppy was as calm as this puppy! Mine is almost 9 weeks n is a sheepaddodle mini. He won’t walk on a Leash well . What stage of training is this? Is my puppy too young to train?
My 4 months old husky won't give up easily so often, even if I give him leash pressure...he keeps pushing forward lol. i feel like it will choke him if i continue the pressure, so I was the one being pulled instead 😭...do you have any suggestion to this?
Yes, I would teach the pup leash pressure. Then check out my Obedience and Behavioral Modification Flowchart episode: th-cam.com/video/bPkW3SWblfM/w-d-xo.html Leash pressure training: th-cam.com/video/hCb1Y86eYBQ/w-d-xo.html
Awesome video, watching you from France :) I'm going to get a gsd in a week and lots of people say that we shouldn't take the puppy in the stair until 6/7 months because it's not good for their articulations, is that true ?
Thank you, I appreciate that! I'm not sure I understand the question though. If you mean going up and down stairs, then I wouldn't worry about it unless the puppy started limping. If you're talking about socializing, then I would suggest checking out this video: th-cam.com/video/OvdKDE326gs/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps, and thanks for supporting the channel. :)
@@NateSchoemer perdon my english haha, thank you, yes i meant go up and down stairs, so if the puppy ain't limping i can let him go up and down the stairs right? :) thank again :)
I just got a German shepherd puppy, but why do my puppy keep eating like grass, small branches and rocks when I take her outside? What can I do? Is it normal for her to do that? She is 8 weeks old.
Yes, it's normal. You can use the leash pressure, like demonstrated in this video. You can also pop the leash, giving the pup a correction when the pup picks up an of the questionable items. The motivation to prevent the correction, must override the motivation to eat the grass, branches, and rocks.

Your teachings and American Standard dog trading are the best

That is awesome! Good luck with the new pup :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks man, seriously love your videos. First actual puppy I’ve ever got so I’m a little nervous, but have a huge confidence boost after watching your stuff. I definitely want to send you some videos of him once he’s trained up, so I can give credit where it’s due!
🧡 Adorable 🐶 and excellent instructions!🧡
Thank you!👍
My pleasure. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.
Hi Nate! Thank you so much for all the insightful content you have been sharing. It's been super helpful! Unfortunately, I've only happened upon this video today. Our german shepherd will soon be 6 months. I was wondering if I should go about this training in the same way as a puppy that would be in the ideal window for this?
thanks nate
Great video , great delivery. Will implement thos today as my puppy is learning leash training before he goes out in 2 weeks. What do you class as high value treats?
Thanks! Usually treats like cooked chicken is a very high value treat.
@@NateSchoemer appreciate it. Keep up the splendid work.
I still have more good days than bad, but I am getting worse, and I like the idea of training this fur missile to help me out.
i saw on another comment of his he said once a night is enough for potty.
Thanks! Most puppies are okay if they are taken out to potty at least once a night. :)
What if they sleep all night. Should we wake them up at night to go out or leave them be. I personally leave him be.
@@andreaetchison991, we didn't. She woke us if she needed to go, otherwise we let her sleep.
What treats do you use? I’m getting a puppy in a few days and this is my first dog ever. I’ve been watching all your videos starting from bottom to top.
Awesome! You can see what food, treats, or training products that I use here: www.nateschoemer.com/store :)
Question, should the first thing I do when bringing home an 8 week old puppy be to show him her potty area in my back yard?
Wery nice and informative video. We are soon to have a Cocker and this is wery helpfull
Awesome! Thanks for sharing and I'm happy they are helping. :)
Thanks ive you awnser, keep making more videos like
this!!!😊😊👍🏼
Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/OvdKDE326gs/w-d-xo.html
What a beautiful dog
Thanks, Nirs Nne!
Hi Nate, hope you are well. We may be adopting a 4 yr old dog from a shelter who has only ever lived in the shelter. Should we train him as if he is a puppy like the above video?
Yes. I follow the same step-by-step scientific proven process with every dog that I train.
1) Teach the markers (engagement training)
2) Teach luring
3) Teach leash pressure
4) Add the verbal command
5) Teach the stay with leash pressure
6) add corrections (If desired) for reliability
In regard to the science part, keep in mind that when you are training your dog the science is always the same; what varies between each dog are things like motivation, perseverance, intelligence, temperament, disposition, etc.
Hi, should you keep a leash on a new puppy in the house all the time? Does it hurt their neck?
@@NateSchoemer would you say it's best to spend an hour teaching a new puppy in the garden first on day 1, getting them comfortable with the markers and some movement then bringing them into the house showing them round and introducing the crate?
i got a silly question, what treats do you give your dogs while also doing a raw diet?
You can see the treats and food that I use for the dogs I train here: www.nateschoemer.com/store
It looks like you have already tought the puppy your markers and leash presure. Do you do this before you bring him in the home?
If you can, that would be great, but not necessary. The leash pressure should still prevent the puppy from practicing bad behaviors, even if they havent been trained on it yet.
Can you plsssss posts some more puppy videos, i am getting a 6 weeks old so am a bit nervous although your videos make so much sense and i hope i can follow your tips. Also getting my puppy at 6weeks can i train them the same way as a 8 week old puppy any tips you can share i would be so grateful, thank you
Thanks! I have a lot of video in my basic obedience series working with puppies, so be sure to check those out. :)
I don't like to start training a dog until they're comfortable in the new environment.
If so, how do you introduce to a home if the puppy that hasn’t learned leash pressure yet?
it helps, but no you don't have to. The leash is used to prevent the puppy from practicing undesired behaviors.
Thanks! I may be getting a puppy border collie soon for more puppy training videos. :)
Would it be ok to use a prong collar during this time?
How long do they need to stay in the crate? Also you leash train for couple of weeks but where do you put the dog if you dont have time at the moment to watch him? Last question should i wake up to let my pup go to the garden in the night ?
This should answer your questions: th-cam.com/video/EKqy0j7tYi0/w-d-xo.html Thanks! :)
How much time do you think we should take off work when we first get a puppy to start the intensive training please
You can always use petting and praise as the reward. :)
What do you use for training treats??
The dogs kibble or this: www.arihandcharlies.com/ :)
Cheers!
Thanks for the advice! Makes totally sense!

@@NateSchoemer Hi Nate, appreciate you reply , will do as adviced. Will be glad to support your work. Cheers
Hey Nate! Quick question, what crate did you use in this video? I’m going to need one for my 8 week Malinois
Most plastic crates that you can buy at a local pet store will work. You can also get something more durable, like this: rufflandkennels.com/
What treats to do you recommend?
If I'm still using continual reinforcement with a dog, then I like to use either Stella and chewy's freeze-dried coated kibble, or vital essentials freeze-dried bites. Lastly, it's not the healthiest, but the consistency makes it great for training. Bil•Jac frozen raw.

Approximately How much time do you need to dedicate to this type of training until the puppy gets it? Especially with a 9-5 work schedule...

Hi, do you lightly tug on leash to encourage pup to go upstairs or explore a new area or just use treats to lure him to explore?
You can use leash pressure as well, but you need to be sure to teach the pup leash pressure before using it to encourage the pup to go up the stairs: th-cam.com/video/9L8tK7mSD10/w-d-xo.html :)
Hey Nate, these are really educational videos! What kind of bones you give puppies?
Thanks! I give my dogs/puppies bones like these. Just be sure to take them away after they eat the raw meat, so they don't grind down their teeth. bit.ly/3iKzaJ0
Nate Schoemer thanks!!
And how many times on a daily basis this has to be conducted
Hi, I'm getting a GSD but it will be living outside only. Would these steps be the same? Keep them on the leash around the garden for the first couple of weeks?
It will help make it clear to your pup what the rules are. For example, if you want the pup to not go into certain areas or if you want him to potty is one specific spot. :) You can also use a tab. A tab is a 6 inch to 12 inch leash. It helps prevent the leash from getting caught on things. I hope that helps and thanks for supporting my channel. Cheers!
How old is the puppy in this video he seems very switched on and obedient straight away im getting a gsd puppy next month and I've been watching your videos in preparation for him
Awesome! Thanks for watching. I think he was around 15 weeks in this video. :)
@@NateSchoemer thanks for the reply much appreciated when I get my puppy he will only be just over 8 weeks old how many weeks would you recommend keeping him on his lead for doing similar to this video so he learns what to do and not to do
Does this same thing apply to introducing an older (roughly 8 months) dog into the home?
usually yes, but it depends on what training the dog has had prior and if the dog has any fear issues or learning issues.
Am i supposed to put the crate beside my bed for a few days or for like a week?
I keep the crate next to my bed until the puppy is at least 16 weeks of age. :)
@@NateSchoemer thank you your the best trainer iv ever seen i hope you can get alot more subs
Agreed and the puppy was leash trained... not a normal trait for a new puppy.
Nate, when doing the introduction, is this a "one time" event, or should this be repeated for a number of days? Thanks
oops I stopped too early. Question answered. :)
Lol! I'm happy the video was helpful.
When I start the dogs formal training, I always start with engagement training. th-cam.com/video/UkZ7ucpK9sc/w-d-xo.html

We get our puppy sept :)..cannot wait these vids are amazing
Thank you
Hi Nate, great content … can multiple people train a dog (1 training by one person and the next by another person) … I am getting a German Sheppard and I would like my teen daughters to participate
Yes, as long as everyone is on the same page and is using the same commands and techniques. :)
Hi nate, love your training series
But you should put your all episodes in a seperate series 😀
Thanks! :)
With some thing like this should i say a command before I put a little tug
Yes, you can. I like to use the word "wrong" that predicts leash pressure. However, you can use any word that you like. :)
do you teach a "leave it" command? or just use leash pressure to redirect the puppy?
When the dog doesn't know the out command or the house rules yet, I use the leash pressure. Then I will teach the dog the out command. th-cam.com/video/MbVJJA5wy1Q/w-d-xo.html
@@NateSchoemer yes. Thanks. I didn't realize until after I commented that its covered in a later video.
i have a big dog's bed for my 8 weeks German shepherd, should I buy a crate? and if i should, the German shepherd grows pretty fast, so I'm gonna buy another one for when he's gonna be bigger or I just won't use it anymore?

I wished my puppy was as calm as this puppy! Mine is almost 9 weeks n is a sheepaddodle mini. He won’t walk on a Leash well . What stage of training is this? Is my puppy too young to train?
You can start training a puppy as early as 8 weeks of age as long as the puppy is comfortable in its new environment.
Can I still do this in my puppy that has been with me for months?
My 4 months old husky won't give up easily so often, even if I give him leash pressure...he keeps pushing forward lol. i feel like it will choke him if i continue the pressure, so I was the one being pulled instead 😭...do you have any suggestion to this?

I just got a German shepherd puppy, but why do my puppy keep eating like grass, small branches and rocks when I take her outside? What can I do? Is it normal for her to do that? She is 8 weeks old.
Yes, it's normal. You can use the leash pressure, like demonstrated in this video. You can also pop the leash, giving the pup a correction when the pup picks up an of the questionable items. The motivation to prevent the correction, must override the motivation to eat the grass, branches, and rocks.
