How To Introduce Your New Puppy To Other Dogs

  • First impressions are everything! When first introducing a puppy to your other pack members or bringing your puppy along to meet friends or family dogs, here are some things that you can do to help set your canines up to be compadres and help prevent altercations where altercations wouldn't otherwise exist.
    In this video, Sharky gets to meet my dog Blue Ivy. I have two dogs in my house but introductions should always be done one-on-one with each dog separately first, before putting multiple dogs together.
    My biggest piece of advice: DON'T RUSH IT! We humans are so excited to throw everyone together so they can all be instant friends but that's not a good way to introduce dogs. Sure - sometimes everything goes just fine but sometimes it doesn't and by the time you know it hasn't gone well, it's too late to recreate that first impression. Give your dogs a couple of weeks to adjust and to use their primary senses (not ours) to get to know one another; scent and sound.
    When you do let them interact, watch for appropriate behavior such as loose body language, dogs exchanging roles in play, play bounces and play bows. If either dog looks uncomfortable, (stiffened body posture, avoiding the other dog, head low and growls, stare downs or extended side-eye while stiff) end the session and take a step back. When in doubt, take a walk. When you walk with the dogs, designate one person per dog for safety reasons.
    One other tip - be sure you don't inadvertently put tension on the leash. Relax with the leash so you don't accidentally communicate tension.
    Happy socializing!!

      Hi Mox! Yes, I would recommend neutering your current dog and getting a dog of the opposite sex for best results. Yes - same sex dogs can get along, plenty do, but you run less of the risk of male/male or female/female issues simply by getting the opposite sex to what you currently have. As far as training goes, neither sex is "easier", it's all about the individual dog on that one. Hope that helps! Reach out if you need some help finding the right match for your family. Best! ~Sara

      Hi Mox - the choice to neuter an older dog will be based on his overall health and anesthetic risk. If he's in need of a dental cleaning or any other anesthetic procedure, talk to your veterinarian - chances are, he would be fine for a neuter too. With your female, yes - not having heat cycles is so much easier and you also remove the risk of her getting an infection in her uterus. It's a safe procedure as long as she's healthy. Hope that helps!

    Hi Sara! WOW you are amazing with dogs! Already I've many maaaany of your videos to watch :). My question if I may- we're going to have a 10 week old shihtzu brought to us by one of the shelter's volunteers. We also have a 9 year old rescue shihtzu that I wished i'd watched your leash walking videos years ago. He came into our lives at 3 while we had our immaculately behaved 10 year shih tzu that just passed. The 3 year old rescue learned a lot from the older pup (who just passed at 16 ... hence rescuing a puppy... but i digress) but was pretty wild and not entirely well socialized. He's incredibly cuddly and well behaved inside, and has overcome a lot outside... yet he really doesn't interact much with other dogs. They'll come up to him and he kinda freezes and looks at me (as I trained him with treats that whenever he's calm in front of another dog, he gets a treat,) sometimes tries to dominate them (if they are huge) and occasionally will start the play position but nothing follows through. He's never been aggressive towards any dogs, but he simply doesn't react or really engage much. We've tried socializing him with other dogs and he most often will exchange smells and then simply ignore them. Add to that- the puppy will arrive late Jan/early feb in Brooklyn (ie: FREEZING OUT+ NOT the cleanest sidewalks) and live in a small open plan apartment so there's no real 'putting the older pup in another room,' other than the bathroom... how the heck would you advise the two of them meeting? I'm fearing him growling and then ignoring the puppy from day one til forever... help me Sara-Wan! Thank you!

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Meredith - Thanks so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
      I think your two best friends in this situation will be a hands-free leash and a puppy play pen. I'd definitely crate train with the puppy too (such a helpful tool) but the leash and the playpen are where it's at when doing slow integrations in tighter spaces. Both of these tools can help you give your older dog time to get acquainted at a distance (think smell and sound first) without the puppy being able to ambush him as puppies like to do. The playpen is great (you can do this with the crate too) as the older dog can get really close to investigate while not having his bubble invaded before he's ready. Remember to give the older dog good things when the puppy is close to him (and example would be treats in his bowl if the puppy is somewhat near when he's eating) so he builds a positive, not a possessive association.
      Hopefully your puppy will be a good recipient of communication and if he gets out of line, a correction from the older dog is completely appropriate and I'd let them work things out as much as possible on their own terms, once the puppy is settled in. That will help your puppy with communications outside of just his housemate as well.
      you didn't ask about this but I want to throw it in there given where you live and being winter right now - it's super important that your puppy have SAFE socialization outside of the home with other people and other animals during his critical period (less than 12 weeks of age). A day or two at doggie daycare, a playdate with a petsitter who has other vaccinated animals are a couple of ideas to help with that in the city.
      I should be releasing a Start Your Puppy Off Right Video here in the next few weeks - hopefully that will help as well! If you get stuck and need assistance, don't hesitate to book a virtual session with me through my website at saraondrako.com.
      All the best and congratulations on your new upcoming family member!

    Thank you for your video. I was wondering if it is ok to walk your new puppy like this outdoors before they have had their full vaccinations?

    Can you advise on your opinion/experience?

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Jock - excellent question! Yes - your puppy can, and should, walk outdoors (with caution and avoiding high dog poop traffic areas) prior to the entire puppy vaccine series. Exposure to the outside environment and everything in it is critical prior to 12 weeks of age. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior has this position statement on their site which talks about safe socialization and they explain it very well. You can check it out here: avsab.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Puppy_Socialization_Position_Statement_Download_-_10-3-14.pdf

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Adele - in short - lot's of practice with impulse control. Blue Ivy is naturally a very impulsive girl and her energy can be very overwhelming to other dogs and puppies if we don't take the time to decrease her energy to an appropriate level prior to introducing her to other dogs. She knows that she has to be calm before she meets a new puppy as much as she knows that play will stop if she becomes too aroused. Practicing impulse control can help greatly. In terms of jealousy, I don't give my dogs attention if they are being pushy with other dogs to vie for my attention but I do give them attention when they are being calm and quiet. So long as you are providing for your older dog's daily one-on-one needs and not reinforcing pushy behavior, you shouldn't have to worry about the jealousy factor. Hope that helps! :)

We are going to pick up my new puppy at oct 30/31 and i am wondering how will i let my male shitzu meet my new male puppy (labrador retriever). I'm worried that my shitzu might fight or might be aggressive towards the new puppy when they meet since my shitzu and jack russel always fights when they see each other so we keep them separated (although at the past my shitzu and jackrussel sleep in the same crate and play together then one day they kept growling at each other then they both fight each other, any ideas on why both of their relationship changed? Both are male btw) back to my quiestion i am really scared and excited at the same time but i am really wondering how will i let my shitzu and labrador puppy meet without them having any bad blood with each other (note: i am probably not gonna let the new puppy met the jack russel bec the jack russel dog always fights any dogs he see's any ideas to why is he like that?) thankyou in advance.

      Hi Donna! I love using puppy play pens to give the dogs their space while getting to know one another! I use baby gates most of the time but the lovely thing about using a playpen is that you can put it pretty much anywhere. I wouldn't have the puppy in there all of the time (still tether the puppy to you when not directly supervised) and I would recommend crate training for ease of potty training and building in confidence for independent time. Congratulations on your new family member!

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! Congratulations on your new addition to the family! With introducing new puppies to older dogs, slow and steady wins the race. With your older lab, you may have to work with the puppy on giving him space whereas the 4-year-old will most likely not need your intervention. Older dogs are prone to inflammation and pain and they can often be very stoic about it (hide it well). A 15-year-old dog may be less tolerant of a young wild puppy simply because they equate to discomfort. I would recommend taking your 15-year-old into the vet for a pain check so that if that is a factor, you can make your older dog more comfortable around the puppy and just in general. As far as the 4-year-old dog and the new puppy go, they are more likely to work their relationship out themselves and I typically allow dogs to do so, so long as the older dog doesn't try to cause harm to the puppy. Dogs are typically pretty good at navigating their places in a relationship amongst each other, so feel free to let your adult dog guide and correct your new puppy. Lastly - 5 weeks is too young to be away from mom and siblings (with some rare exceptions) so be sure that you are safely socializing (around vaccinated animals) your puppy to other animals outside of the home and lots of people. Hope that helps! Keep me posted on how puppyhood is going :)

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Akira! Excellent question. Socializing puppies prior to 12 weeks is critical for their development and can be done two ways (both is best if possible): 1. Walking, training, and playing around other dogs (at a distance) but not interacting with them, and 2. Playing with other animals that have a known vaccine history (& are current in their vaccines) in an area of low risk. A low risk area is a place like your backyard or a friends house. A neighborhood with sidewalks is great but you want to keep your puppy out of common pooping areas. No dog parks or pet stores (especially the grass outside of pet stores) until that fourth round of vaccines is on board. 8 weeks is a great time to introduce your puppy to the leash and get her comfortable so that you can do walks easier for intros. In the meantime, stick with low dog traffic areas, with vaccinated dogs that have good social skills. Hope that helps!

    Maybe a silly question but what if the pup is not fully vaxxed yet? I know they shouldn't go outside besides their backyard/home until they're fully vaxxed. So a neutral place may be impossible for me to introduce my Golden male pup to my female Corgi... Maybe best to introduce them in the backyard? I don't think my Corgi is too territorial of the backyard. Either that or maybe let her sniff him while he's inside the crate?

      She can go for a walk at 8 weeks for sure! Get her out there! Just be cautious not to bring her into high traffic areas where other dogs are defecating frequently - be selective where she has her potty breaks. Avoid places like pet stores where vaccine status of other dogs is unknown but use parks, friends & family dogs (that you know are vaccinated) and try visiting farms with limited interaction with the other animals. Working with you and engaging with you in the near vicinity of other animals and people counts as social experiences too! Congrats on your new family member 😊

    Hello, I saw thw comment down below about bringing home an eight week puppy. We have an eight year male boston terrier and we will be bringing home a female 8 week old boston terrier soon. Would having them socialize in our neighbor's yard be an ok place for them to meet if I know our neighbor's dog has had all necessary vaccinations? I really want them to meet in a neutral area but the puppy will not be fully vaccinated but I do not trust the other neighborhood dogs (besides our neighbor) with having vaccinated dogs. Also, because our boston terrier is a huge marker so I would want them to meet somewhere where he doesn't constantly mark.

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Sarah - great questions! Yes - your neighbor's yard is appropriate as a place to meet and greet and great job narrowing it down to somewhere safe with vaccines on board. Puppies are fairly prone to parasites and different breeders have different protocols for what they allow the veterinarians to administer at varying ages before you take your puppy home so I would also be sure that dewormings were given to your new puppy starting between 2-3 weeks of age, then at their first veterinary visit with their first round of vaccines as their is some risk in transmitting parasites to your neighbors dog through feces in the yard as well. Hope that helps and congratulations on your new family addition!

      Sarah - I'm actually recording a Start Your Puppy Off Right Video this week. It will most likely get released late next week or early the following week. It will be packed with foundational skill information for setting your puppy up for success. If you haven't already, you may want to hit subscribe and tap the bell button to be notified when it gets released. I also just did a video on the hands-free leash. I use this with every single puppy I ever work with - it makes training so much faster and easier. You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/BTmtIW42K9s/w-d-xo.html Happy training!

      @@SaraOndrako Awesome! We are picking up our puppy on Wednsday (: I do have another question if you don't mind me asking: we are getting the puppy late in the evening. It will also be 20 degrees. I stated we will be having them meet outside in our neighbor's yard, but it will be so late and cold!! Do we wait until the morning? Do we try to introduce them maybe in our front yard where it is well lit? Or maybe it will be ok to introduce them inside? We really wanted it to be in a neutral area but I'm afraid he wont "see" the puppy in the dark. Plus, it will be very cold.

      So glad you asked! Given those circumstances I wouldn't even introduce them day one. Let them discover each other the first evening using their smell and sound rather than their sight. That will give them plenty information to start without overwhelming either of them. Baby gates are great for in-home slow introductions too! I'd love to see your new baby - if you have an IG account, feel free to tag me. 😊

    Hi! Omg your dog blue ivy is amazingly good ! I rescued a male PitBull he is about 3 yrs old he is the sweetest thing, he can be reactive. Recently, I also had to take in my brothers dog which is a 6 month female PitBull I have tried to get them to meet but they are both so high energy. I recently did get my male pit neutered and that has helped some but he just seems so overwhelmed he’s not aggressive just like so excited and he doesn’t know what to do. Side note: My 3 yr old male was rescued from a dog fighting situation and he was in bad shape when I first got him they cut his tail and he was very scared He would flatten to the ground over just about everything, so he has come a long way and I’ve had him for about a year he also has been the only dog until now. I’m going to follow your tips and advice 🙏🏻 it works. Thanks ! ☺️

    Hi there, if anyone could help it would be great! I have 2 older Chihuahua mixes age 9 and 7, my friend got a new puppy who is a Papillion/Chihuahua mix and is a smaller dog. I was not able to get them to meet slow and was thrown into a situation where I had to take the puppy because my friend ended up not caring for her the way he should. My dogs don't like her, one tolerates her and doesn't mind her giving him kisses or playing gently, but he does NOT like it when it's a bit of open mouth and muzzle grabbing play and I have no idea how to stop her from doing it because my dog is trying to not engage and she terrorizes him sometimes lol. All of the things in this video, I couldn't do and I fear after a year of having them all together that I may not be able to fix this so they all can get along. There are a lot of other issues also but I won't list them here. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🤣 You got lucky with the puppy! Same principles apply. It's a great learning experience for your older dog in learning how not to overwhelm the new puppy by only being able to interact when he/she is in a calmer state. This will help with impulse control and lessen the likelihood of altercations or frustrating behaviors in the future. Reverse the roles (from what you see in the video) and it will help with balance between both of them! Happy training and congrats on the new family member!

    Is it a bad thing if my older dog is a bit snappy to my puppy if the pup gets too close too soon?
    I do have the separated in the house, so the pup isnt invading my older (5yo) dog. But some situations are more difficult.
    That wouldnt be the end of any chance of a future bond will it?

      Great question! Slow and steady wins the introduction race so great job there! It is okay to let your older dog communicate and work things out with the puppy to help teach the puppy important boundaries between dogs and develop better communication skills. I typically let them work it out for the most part if introductions have been done appropriately. The only time that I really intervene is if I am concerned for a real injury (I'm not worried about a lot of noise or some physical response) or, if the younger dog is pestering the older dog to the point that the younger dog may cause the older dog injury. The latter would indicate that I need to spend more time with the puppy to help reduce the nagging of the older dog and cultivate more appropriate play time between them. Hope that helps and congrats on your puppy!

    Hi Sara, watching your video bring me some hope again. I have recently brought a puppy back(actually is about 6 weeks already) and i think i have missed the golden timing to introduce the new puppy to my 2 years old dog. We have separate them by locking the new puppy in the cage(3rd vaccine is not completed yet) but is within same area.
    Normally we will allow the puppy to come out for about 10 to 15 mins to have short interaction with my old dog. We thought this is the way to let them get closer with each other.
    My old dog was acting abit of avoiding to the puppy, wherever the puppy came closer, he will run but he will start looking for the puppy afterwards. Is like usual, we let the puppy out today, allow them to get to know each other. But my old dog was acting abit fierce today, and seems like not friendly at all.
    In this situation where the 2 dogs are actually "knowing" each other for about 6 weeks already. What can i do to re-introduce the puppy to my old dog do that both of them can get along with each other?
    Thanks

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi May - I would put your puppy on the hands-free leash so that your older dog always has an "out" and can have some personal space if needed. I would also let your older dog correct the puppy if the puppy gets too rough or too invasive. A little dog to dog communication is a good thing and will help the puppy learn how to calibrate and better communicate. You are on the right track with short interactions so as not to overwhelm either of them and to try and keep it positive.
      Additionally, I would let good things happen for your older dog when the puppy is around. For example, if you have the puppy attached to you with the hands free leash and you walk by the older dog, go ahead and drop a treat to your older dog when the puppy is close by so that the older dog begins to see that good things happen when the puppy is nearby.
      Here is my video on how to use the hands-free leash - this might help! th-cam.com/video/BTmtIW42K9s/w-d-xo.html Congrats on your new family member! 😊

    • @SaraOndrako
      @SaraOndrako  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Generally speaking, yes, it’s okay to introduce a 5 week old puppy to a 3 year old lab, however, if your dog is truly dog aggressive, (versus just reactive in certain settings) it may not work out. I’d be prepared to do slow intros to see if there’s a chance, meaning the Lab gets to investigate from a distance while the puppy is in your arms and even in the crate. What you have to be really careful of in this situation is that a puppy at 5 weeks is in the midst of a very critical social period and if the puppy experiences something traumatic during that period (such as your other dog going after him/her or even barking growling intensely through the crate) it could have lifelong consequences for the puppy.
      All that being said, you could have a professional help you with introductions to read your older lab (and the puppy’s) body language. I would certainly take things slow and while I’d allow Jessy to come closer to investigate, make sure only good things happen around the puppy (give Jessy treats while Jessy practices calm curiosity). Hope that helps!

      Ah - but you can!! I encourage you to visit the American Veterinary Society of Behavior to read their puppy socialization statement. Your puppy (at 8 weeks of age) NEEDS safe socialization to develop into a well-rounded adult dog. There are plenty of ways to provide that to your puppy who is not yet fully vaccinated in safe and effective manner.
