    My puppy had a horrible relationship with her crate from her previous owners (they used the crate as a punishment) but after following your video she’s in love with hers!!! My girl is 14 months now and she genuinely gets mad when her crate is closed and she can’t get in 😂 some days she just loves to lay and there and doesn’t want to come out!!

      It's the power of understanding how to use markers. When I fully understood that concept it changed the way I looked at dog training for the better. I'm happy you're getting a lot out of these videos. :)

    Hi Nate. My GSD boy hasn't been conceived or born yet, but will be next year, my mind is like a sponge soaking up any information that will help me. I've saved you in my 'Favourites'. After watching heaps of vids, I had very high expectations that training will work first time, but you've brought me back to reality. I can recall the tortoise and the hare story. Perseverance pays. Thank you.

    We adopted a sweet fella who is about 10 or 12 weeks old and looks like a possible beagle mixed with maybe some catahoula curr. He has to be crated some because I have an autistic child and the puppy and my son are getting to know each other slowly. My biggest problem is that my puppy, Rosco, not just whines but screams and goes crazy in his crate! This sends my son into orbit! I LOVE dog training and have done everything right (I mean, I’m human and I’m not perfect but I don’t think I’ve made any huge mistakes). He is fine in the crate at night beside my bed but not during the day. I can’t figure out what to do differently. I’m willing to pay for a consultation if necessary. I love your training videos!

    So glad to see you putting that much leash pressure on him. My pup is very resistant to the leash pressure when working on “down” and I’ve been afraid of keeping the pressure on too hard for too long.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, sometime you may need to add a little extra pressure. The most important thing to keep in mind when doing leash pressure training is; when the pressure is turned on, it can not be turned off until the dog complies. And when the dog complies it must immediately be turned off. :)

    Hey! It's so nice that you respond to questions of your viewers! Thank you so much!
    We're getting our puppy in a few weeks and we saw that you suggested to always keep them in the crate unless you have eyes on, so that you can correct or reward their behaviour until they know what they can and cannot do.
    But we were just wondering, is it best to make sure she has something to do in the crate like a toy or something? I'm scared that she otherwise wouldn't like the crate but on the other hand, it decreases the value of the toy? And what about at night, if she needs to stay in there for hours (we would let her out every 4 hours to do her duty) but does she need something else in the crate?
    Also, what is your opinion on the best sleeping place for a dog? As a puppy we would put her in the crate next to our bed, like you suggested but we're not sure what's the best when she's older. Isn't it hard to getting her used to a different sleeping place when she slept in the bedroom as a puppy?
    we are thinking between our bedroom and our outbuilding but at the outbuilding, she would be really secluded from us, which may not be ideal.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Siggy! You can put a kong in the crate with her at night stuffed with raw dog food and frozen. This will give your pup something to do and it's a healthy treat. I move them out of the bedroom when they are around 16 - 17 weeks of age. Any location should be okay as long as it's temperature controlled. :)

    Hey Nate, diving in with a new pup and very, very excited. I'm a huge fan of your training style and really appreciate that you have made it so readily available to the public.
    I saw in a different video you keep toys as treats, not lying around for always access, but special for playtime. I was wondering if the puppy at 9 weeks, who has been with his litter up until this point, will feel separation anxiety and whether or not it is a good idea to leave one soft, plush toy about his size in the crate with him for comfort. Good idea or bad?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yes, I will usually give puppies something to keep them busy and relaxed. My go-to is a kong, but you can use whatever your puppy likes. Just make sure it's not something the puppy can choke on.

    Hi Nate. Thanks for all you do. I just found out about this membership and am stoked for the next live QnA.
    I have a question about crate size- Often crate size is suggested to be big enough for the dog to stand and turn around~ does it help the situation at all if it's big enough for the dog to fully stretch out while laying on its side? Also, does the dog want to be able to see clearly out of it?
    I just celebrated one year with my first dog and street rescue from Baja. She has a crate that she can stand and turn around in~ but its not big enough for her to lay on her side fully stretched out which is how she sleeps on the floor. She's had some bad moments in the crate and bent it pretty bad and has bled trying to get out, which he has done through sheer determination once. She can rattle it pretty hard and I've given up on using it. Now I'm realizing we have a separation anxiety problem to deal with. I'm considering making her a new crate out of plywood thats bigger and with vents she can't get her paws into... but I wonder if this matters at all, or if I should just try again to train her in her current crate...
    Thanks
    max and mercy-churro

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The crate size is suggested to be big enough for the dog to stand and turn around during the potty training process. Once the dog is fully potty trained, the crate can be much larger. For example, my dogs have a tent they like to hang out in, which is an excellent option if the dog doesn't try escaping since they can easily rip through it if they want to. :)

      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer! Yes, I would teach the pup in the location where you have the crate. You can move the crate around if you like, but this is an easy command for most dogs to grasp. Thanks! :)

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Crate training is for potty training and house training. House training is when we teach a dog how to behave in the house. Meaning, not chewing on furniture, ripping up the toilet paper, or any other behavior you don't want them to perform. When your dog is fully potty training and house trained, then a crate is no longer needed. The crate teaches them to hold their bladder and it helps keep them safe when you can't watch them. When I'm raising a puppy, I have them out of the crate as much as possible. When they are out of the crate, I have eyes on 100% of the time. When you take your eyes off of a puppy, that's usually the moment they do something you don't like, such as chewing on furniture or relieving themself on the floor. The more they practice bad behaviors, the harder it is to break those behaviors.
      If the puppy has gone potty in the house or chewed on something, but you did not catch them in the act, then do not correct them. You must catch them immediately or else they won't understand.
      Often people will argue till they are blue in the fact that they can teach a dog not to go potty in the house by catching them after the fact. However, out of the ten times, they corrected the dog for this behavior one or two of the times they caught the dog in the act, and that’s when the dog learned.
      Here’s an analogy I use for explaining this to people: Let’s say that you become a prisoner of war in a foreign country where you don’t speak the same language. You have your little prison cell with your toilet that you use every day with no issues. One day you become bored and you start to carve on the wall. One of the guards sees you carving on the wall and he runs into your cell, yelling at you in a language you don’t understand. They then take your face and shove it into the toilet. Are you going to think that they are shoving your face into the toilet because you used the toilet, or are you going to think they are shoving your face into the toilet because you were carving on the wall? Because that’s what you were doing when they started yelling at you.
      You can try to raise a puppy Malinois or Dutch Shepherd without a crate, but I can almost guarantee that it'll create more stress for you and it'll make the training take longer than it should.
      I hope this helps and thanks for supporting my channel.

    Hi Nate!
    Thanks again for being so responsive and helpful to your subscribers. We appreciate your passion for teaching and training.
    I need tips on first night at home. My puppy’s crate is in the living room, not in my bedroom. Should I get a separate crate for sleeping? Should I sleep in the living room during the first couple nights when I first bring him home if he seems uncomfortable? Or, should I just place him inside nd let him cry it out? I have set a timer set to bring him out twice in the night during the first week.
    How long does it typically take for the puppy to really enjoy being in his crate?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It depends on the puppy. I like to sleep next to the crate for the first few weeks. Also, it helps speed up the process if you put the puppy in and out of the crate randomly throughout the day. It also helps the pup get comfortable with the crate, and it helps prevent separation anxiety.
      I like to give puppies raw dog food frozen inside of a kong toy when I put them in the crate. That should decrease the time it takes to get the puppy to enjoy being in the crate.
      Cheers! :)

      Hi Nate! I was fishing for this video and I’m glad someone already asked this question.
      Just adopted a 8 mo old German Shepard/Australian cattle dog. We left here out the first few nights and she was doing fine until she started destroying everything. We put her in the garage until we found the crate. Finally bought the crate and it’s in our living room. She’s not liking it and even if I’m sleeping right next to her she cries. Any advice for a desperate dog mom?
      I’ve tried the frozen kong and she plays with it with half of her body out the crate smh

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely the small would be the best to start with. You could try medium as well. bit.ly/2Y1tKkl
      During the potty-training process, it's important to initially have a crate that is only a little larger than your dog or puppy, with only enough space to stand up, turn around and lay down. This will make the dog learn to hold his/her bladder. If your dog is already potty-trained, a bigger crate is acceptable.

    We’re getting a German Shepherd puppy in 4 weeks, I’ve seen that you say to get a crate only big enough for them to stand up & turn around in (for potty training) but should we get the crate based on the size she is when we get her or what she’ll grow in to? I assume the former and just change the crate as she grows out of it?

    • @NateSchoemer

    Is this release word different then when your releasing your dog from like a sit stay or down stay

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Words mean what they predict to our dogs. My "Free" marker means reward and release. My "break" word just means release. A marker is a sound that marks a correct or incorrect behavior. This is why a release word is just a release word and not a release marker. Since it's not marking anything. :)

    I notice you have different size crates for different size dogs. The main thing stopping me from getting a dog is cost.
    Would it be OK to get a crate for the expected size of the dog as an adult?
    Edit: I see you basically answer my question later in the video than when I asked it. But the reason I asked was because I don't have a car, and transport will be busses, trains, and an occasional plane. The last one I am concerned about, I want the crate to continue to be a positive experience, and to reduce the trauma of airplane travel.

    I would love to work on this with my 1 year old rhodesian/rottie but we are a few steps behind; he's a rescue who came to me a month ago with some fear issues, and he is too spooked to follow the treats into the crate. Could I possibly get a bit of advice (or be directed to a video you have already done; I just discovered you a couple of days ago!) regarding the steps that I need to take in order to desensitize him enough to get to the starting point of this video? I've read up on desensitization and have researched a few things that I'm sure would work, but you seem to have a unique perspective and a style of training that I really like, so your ideas would be of great value to me! I appreciate you, these are amazing videos.

      I would suggest making him eat in the crate. Put his food in the back of the crate and leave the door open. If it's kibble, you can just leave it there. Don't give him any food outside of the crate. Make him get over his fear and go into the crate for the food. Once he goes in, leave the door open and let him eat. I would do this for a week or so. Once he seems comfortable, then you can start the training as demonstrated in this video. I hope this helps. Cheers!

      You may have to correct the bad behavior to stop it.
      Here's a section from my dog training manual that may be helpful.
      Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this:
      • One: Preventing the dog from practicing the undesired behavior.
      • Two: Using a correction to stop the behavior.
      A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So, in the end, the 58 motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior.
      If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept: Imagine every dog has a bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether.
      This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act.
      In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear.

    My puppy is 8 weeks old and we just got him. When I leave him in his crate and lock the door he cry’s nonstop until I let him out. I’ve been working on this training from the video. I’ll also give him bones in the crate and the rest of his meal after a training sesh. What should I do about the crying in the crate? Should I leave him in there to cry? I try to comfort him while he is in the crate by being right next to the crate and sticking my fingers in to pet him but he still cry’s until I let him out. Thanks for the content. Love the videos!

    Hello Nate Schoemer, could you tell me how big is your box/crate for Sherry? What is her weight?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When potty training have a crate that's just big enough for the dog to stand up, spin around, and lay down (and not any larger). If the crate is larger, then the puppy would be able to go potty in one end of the crate and then sleep on the other end, which would slow the potty-training process. By having the crate the correct size, this will allow the dog to learn to hold their bladder. When your dog is fully potty trained, a larger crate will be acceptable.

    Hello, my rough collie puppy comes home in October, and this delema is stressing me out. Can you help me with my crate question? I was wondering if it is okay for a puppy to have 2 crates? I would like the pup to sleep in my room with me. However, I can't leave the pup crated and unattended in my room (like if I go to work for a couple hours etc) because I have a house rabbit that shares half of my room (she has a large playpen). I don't want the puppy to stress her if it barks or whines while I'm gone. So can I crate the pup in my room at night, and in the living room otherwise?
    A big plus for having a dog for me is them sleeping in my room (I've been through trauma and not being alone helps me relax to sleep). Bunny has her area and can't be moved to another room. Even she helps me sleep, as if she hears something, she will thump her foot to alert me. I noticed she hasn't felt as calm since my dog died either.
    The rabbit grew up around my previous dog that just passed in May, and they were quite bonded. Bunny has no issues with dogs, but they don't do well with stressful noises (if pup whines while I'm not there it could stress her). Previous dog slept next to my bed at night (no crate). This is my first time crate training a puppy.

      Ideally I want to work towards the new dog sleeping next to my bed (on my bed would be fine with me too) with no crate, but being crated while I'm at work until I trust them to behave while I'm gone.

      Terminal Marker (Free): This is a sound that lets your dog know they will be receiving a reward, but it also guarantees a release. Sound = reward & release.

    How do you know when your puppy is ready to be left out of the crate at night and while not at home?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Slowly start giving your dog more freedom in the house. If you find yourself still having to correct for house issues, such as chewing or getting into the trash, then the pup probably isn't ready yet. When I can go a week without having to correct the pup for any house training issues, then I'll start leaving the dog out unsupervised. I like to start with a small room and slowly give them more access to the house when unsupervised. It takes some time, but it's worth doing it right the first time. :)

      That just means that she thinks it's feeding time. It's not a bad thing and it's something most dogs will do a version of. For example, my dogs know that I feed them first thing in the morning, so when I wake up, they get very excited for breakfast and run to the kitchen. Lol! :) It's just pattern recognition.
