Fuel Consumption with Battery Charge Mode tested on PHEV 2024! (94 min on idle)

  • Let's test how much FUEL will CHARGE mode use to charge up the main drive battery to 80% in approx. 90 minutes! When selected, the internal combustion engine is engaged, with the specific purpose of charging the drive battery. The engine will idle, feeding the generator to achieve an 80% charge in approx. 94 minutes!

A really nice test, thank you.
Can you consider doing another test where you test how much fuel it used in CHARGE mode while driving?
So for example you could do 2 trips:
1: Empty battery, full tank, CHARGE mode - drive some specific route, e.g. 50 km, preferably suburban roads with speeds at 80+ km/h
Then measure fuel used and extra EV range generated in % (important as GOM is not good enough)
2: Empty battery, full tank, Normal mode - the same route and driving like in 1.
    Then measure fuel used
Then compare both to see how much extra fuel it burned when using CHARGE mode and how much extra EV range was added

Agreed 👍👍. This test would be quite relevant!!!

Yesss sir!!! Love my Mitsubishi PHEV on charge mode!! I see it stays around 75% to 80%

In my opinion, using the CHARGE mode at idle makes no sense from an ecological point of view. Using it when moving makes more sense because the energy not used to move the vehicle will be used to recharge. A mode that I appreciate more and more is SAVE at 30-40% of the battery on the highway, then the vehicle is more powerful on hills if the battery is not empty. And I still have autonomy left to switch to EV when I get off the highway.

Very informative and good to know. This would be useful for power outages and camping.😀

Charge mode is economically sensible only when actually moving and the engine is rotating the front-wheels. Now, as you mentioned, there could a variety of other reasons you might want to use it.

Dear, I have a question if you could please answer to that..
I have an Outlander 2023, whenever I stop auto brake engages perfectly but after 2 minutes more or less it disengages automatically and car remains in Drive mode and Parking brake engages.. (I never open the door, I never un fasten seat belt, never press Parking brake button) and I take my foot away as it engages, but still it disengages automatically..
Is it normal? Is there any time limit of auto hold brake or shall I get it checked?
    Thanks in advance..

Charge mode charge rate gets throttled after the battery passes about 50% on earlier models. I suspect nothings changed on the latest model. So once the battery gets past that amount the charge mode becomes a lot less efficient in an idle test like this.

Hi great test, but 6.2 liters charged the battery for 48kms. Will it not be the same if we run on fuel only? Thanks

6.2 liters of fuel would likely give about twice as much range if run on fuel only. So, it's a very inefficient and expensive way to recharge the battery.

      No major difference.

6 litres to charge the battery to 80%, thats crazy. Just go straight to an EV.

This is poor scientific method. A waste of my time. Please do better next time. Namely: accurately measure the fuel and charge state prior to charging. Actually do what the video title says you are going to do.
