  • What's a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or mild hybrid?? There is a lot of jargon around electrification and many people are being presented with the opportunity to buy a hybrid vehicle for the very first time. Today's video is hoping to provide some clarity as to how each one works (in simple terms) and which one might be right for you and your lifestyle!

    Going from 32 mpg to 52 mpg is more like a 62% increase in fuel economy. Right?

    I have enjoyed your channel for some time now. I have subscribed and liked many of your videos. But I found this to be one of the most informative and educational of any that I have watched. I am older, probably than your parents, but I enjoy learning about new technology. I am imbracing this hybrid technology and plan to venture in this direction with my next car purchase. Your explanation of the different types of hybrids makes it easier to determine which one fits my lifestyle. I appreciate your vast knowledge and ability to connect with your audience on a very real and personal level. I look forward to my notifications to see when your next videos drop. I hope you continue on this venture and look forward to more information on a variety of vehicles.

    Great video and very relevant topic. Another factor when considering a plug-in hybrid is it is likely not the best choice if you don't have at home charging.

    • @AnyBodyWannaPeanut
      @AnyBodyWannaPeanut หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that's kinda the beauty of plug-in hybrids. Because the battery is so small compared to full electric, a plug-in hybrid can easily be charged overnight with just a standard 110-volt outlet! You don't need a separate outlet installed just for charging. Now if you live in an apartment or something like that, then definitely getting a charge would be difficult.

    Good video! Another description of a mild hybrid would be that it has a starter/generator attached to the transmission which aids in propulsion but like you said never fully propels the vehicle like an electric motor. Mild hybrid adds a little efficiency, also like you said but also adds more horsepower and torque to the powertrain.

    What I would like to know is: What happens if you have a fully electric vehicle, and due to a natural disaster there is NO electricity available for several days, maybe 5 or 6 days in a best case scenario, and you don't have a generator??? ZERO ELECTRICITY AVAILABLE FOR MILES FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. Would greatly appreciate an answer to this question. Thank you, and keep up the excellent work!!!

    Super helpful video. Thank you. Doesn't the PHEV require a lot of electricity? Overnight L1 charge for just 20-40miles feels like it is 10x expensive than an EV?

  • @JoostH.
    @JoostH. 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    FYI, the 3 series LCI does charge the battery with the engine if the navigation is set, you are nearing your destination and the battery is empty.

    Who should use these vehicles:
    -HEV: running through the motorway and city, as well as in congested areas.
    -MHEV: uncongested urban journeys that don't really take any motorway.
    -PHEV: only for people living in gated communities.
    By the way, what type would be a bus that can propel up using an electric engine, yet the combustion one needs to be idling to move it?

    • @21_my_pobedim10
      @21_my_pobedim10 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's completely the opposite lol. Gotta have MHEV if you are on a motorway most of the time

    My question is, on a plug-in hybrid ,if you need to go 150 miles (example) and you drive the first 40 miles on electric engine and the batteries are down.., the gas engine will automatically kicks in ? and while the gas engine is running is for another 50 miles it will charge the batteries? or you need to stop on a charging station and charge it for 2 o 3 hrs again?

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The engine will be capable of charging the battery some, although it would take a very very long time to accomplish fully. But during the trip it will still be operational as a regular hybrid until the next charge

    Nice job I was looking for this!
    1 question remained tho, Is it still worth the price and extra mechanical complexity to go for a PHEV over a HEV if I hafta travel like 3 times a year?

  • @ssz1966

    Still not very clear to me You're missing one important point when a plug-in battery runs out of energy does the car convert to regular gas engine or hybrid engine? You actually said both in the video

    I don't believe they mentioned one advantage of a battery electric vehicle. That is that it needs no oil changes and that there is less to go bad in the long run. On the other hand the extra weight for the battery means that the tires get more wear and tear. On the other hand the brakes as is with the case with hybrids needs less maintenance and repair compared to a internal combustion engine.

    Does the plugin hybrids also charge the battery as you’re driving the car like the hybrids? Or does the battery only get charged when you plug it into an outlet?

    • @CarConfections
      @CarConfections  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      They do also recharge some via regenerative braking. We have gained back up to 5 miles on our BMW 330e

    • @billurban1581
      @billurban1581 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In addition to regeneration, my '23 Volvo has three battery commands: auto, hold, and charge. With "charge" the battery will gain a mile of range every two to three miles of driving with the engine running.@@CarConfections

  • @playgt326
    @playgt326 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Watching the difference, the mild hybrid is basically the same normal ICE, the only difference is the efficiency, is more like an EICE (Efficient Internal Combustion Engine) 👌🏻💪🏻, because is still an ICE, only has 1 more battery (that can be changes and replaced by a new one as the typical car battery when it goes bad 👌🏻). Therefore, that means that possibly the H2-ICEs (Hydrogen Combustion Engine) could be also mild hybrids or EICEs (how do i call them), the only hybrids here are the hybrid and plug in hybrid (especially the PHEV) 💪🏻👏🏻

      1) mhev cars are much lighter and cheaper than hev, phev
      2) replacing battery will cost $1000 voor mhev and $8000+ for hev or phev
      3) you will have to replace your battery once the car is 10-12 years old

    • @21_my_pobedim10

  • @anthroparion

    PHEV make no sense. Either commit to full electric or just use full hybrid. The plugin is a substandard ev and a inefficient fuel based car. The expense at purchase just makes it a nonsense idea.
