      I am photographer, and a rule of thumb I use is that I don’t upgrade my gear just because I want to, but if I literally cannot get the shot or effect I am trying to get without upgrades or peripherals. I grow with my gear. Same applies to videography I think 😊

      Cheap kits only limit the scenarios you can use. You can use even iPhone but then you have to avoid any even moderately high dynamic range scenarios, you cannot separate background from the subject with focus. Using a small camera (or cheap kit lens) basically forces your aperture pretty small all the time in addition to poor dynamic range. (iPhones and other cheap items do have "HDR" modes but those are more marketing tricks than actual usable mode.)
      When you design your camera angles and scenes with that in mind, the end result will look good despite the low quality camera. If you need to capture anything without lots of control over the scene, then you need lots of gear.

    Absolutely no question. Night and day. Too many people think gear is everything. Not! Story is everything. the gear today is stellar. bottom line: good glass, good color science, good audio, good editing, good acting. Stellar gear is often a substitute for inexperience and talent.

    The color space error on the RED raw kind of ruined the comparison for me because the contrast levels looked so muddy and the color was all desaturated. It broke the tone. If he got that right it might have been a much closer competition. I guess it reinforces the point that expensive pro gear is not as forgiving of people who don't know every last detail of what they are working with.

      From recording local, loud club concerts for a while, I've found that as long as the mic/camera preamp combo can carry the full range of normal human hearing (which varies quite a bit by manufacturer & model, especially for high volume levels, although I've had the most consistent good results with Sonys), you can get shocking good audio *if* you put the necessary processing time in. But that can be pretty time consuming, so for more time sensitive projects, even the cheapest Zoom recorder might be more advisable.

    As a rookie filmmaker, I totally vibed with Jake's production style- not because he's got a lot more experience, but because he rocked the directorial scene and took those bold creative leaps.
    Out in the field, I make it a mission to let the creativity flow. Sure, gear and awesome editing matter big time, but let's get real-the heartbeat of a video is all about that storytelling magic.
    So, here's the golden nugget I've scooped up: it ain't just about clocking hours; it's about nailing the technique and marrying it with a splash of creativity. It's about owning those visual elements and bringing the script to life.
    I noticed Ivan also delved into this, but Jake is incredibly restless and thinks outside the box. So, I’m pursuing technical knowledge, and this has encouraged me to explore my wild and creative side even more.
    So, I'm on this grind, soaking up the tech know-how. Jake's got me hyped to dive even deeper into the loony, creative depths.

    I'm still in my beginner phase and what always strikes me about a pro is how much creative fun and freedom is driving their decisions.
    It's easy to get overwhelmed with all the technical aspects as a beginner and overthink everything based on what the fundamentals should be-whereas a pro is much more spontaneous and adapts to the environment. I think it just comes with time and familiarity and experimentation.

  • @horiabodeanu7641
    @horiabodeanu7641 2 ปีที่แล้ว +293

    My unpopular opinion is that the "beginner" made a better story, apart from the colorgrading.
    You see, videomaking is not about gear or owning a crapton of microphones you would never use. It is about giving people emotions. It is about using the gear you have the best in any circumstance.
    Thats the skill someone pro has.

    • @geronimo5537
      @geronimo5537 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      I agree, ultimately this video was about selling what a product can do. Since everyone has covered the video quality differences I'll cover the presented story. The beginner was more focused on a calm story for this product. I felt relaxed and this helped to focus that primary selling point. The pro had overall a nice looking and well placed set. However the pro sacrificed the story. I felt the speaker was the focus over the product. Between him seeming a little crazy and sharp audio spikes the whole presentation was just uncomfortable. If I was paying someone I would be highly upset someone tried to imply my product was for crazy people or unappealing. I'd be getting my money back...
      In conclusion, the beginner has mistakes easily fixed with more post processing to better serve what the client wanted to achieve, by selling the tree. While the pro had no way to fix his mistakes without a complete reshoot. For me the beginner was far more on brand objective and he did pretty good for going first while the pro watched for ideas on his turn next.

I think save for the color grading, few framing issues and out of focus shots, the beginner did a wonderful job. story wise, it was perfect. the idea was to sell the product, I wouldn't buy a product that doesn't work and it was exactly what the pro did. he made dalin more maniacal and creepy which goes against what the product stands for. of course, the best video in terms of what I mentioned above goes to the pro however, story-wise, give the beginner his accolades. side note, I love what Jake did with the b-roll especially the water squirting and rich lightening.

    This was really fun and educational. I'm toying with the idea of investing in some equipment to document my travels. This definitely helps me understand what is more important. I'll keep learning before making a purchase.

    Simply by looking at the end result (without knowing who's pro and beginner), Jake's result was awesome while Ivan's was awful.
    This is a great example to define which more important : having a pro gear to appears pro filmmaker OR practicing and experimenting more with available gear you have to become a pro filmmaker.

    Thanks for this video, it re-enforces the fact you don’t need expensive gear to start a channel. This world fascinates me. I started my channel with an iPhone only, but I’ve recently started investing in apps and mics. I want to take it to the next level. I think working on creativity is most important when new

    I‘ve been talking to a filmmaker colleague and we agreed on that „camera matters the most“ topic: it’s only us. I mean like 10bit 4.2.2 and full frame sensors are nice. But the audience probably won’t see the difference to a 8bit recording with micro four thirds. But what they recognize, is how a story is told.
    It’s only us, who want to work with cinema camcorders an stuff. It’s nice to have, but as you see: a cam for a thousand bucks works too.

      I think beginner in this series means "someone that knows how to use a camera". If you would do this with a person that has no idea how a film set works, zero knowledge of lightning and natural light, it would just be a mess.

    I took 4 years of photography back in 1999-2003 majored in information technology. Over the past 20 years I’ve dreamed of learning film and photography as a pro. I’m faintly a hobbyist but my friends say I have some artist talent. I would pay to have some of this hands on experience with these guys.

    A lot of fun! Some ideas for next episodes:
    - Amateur skinnywasher (or “dishwasher for establishment”).
    - Amateur cyclist.
    - Professional physicist w/ experiment design.
    To make a great commercial, simply add all the parts to speak one sentence. If you overstate (double an idea) you’ll notice repetition, which must be cut or softened. Well-made, My Children.

    I think I have the masterpiece answer. Jake's video with Ivan's vibe. I think when you are talking about something for overcoming anger issues that's a serious issue for people so the comedic/creepy route is a commercial you would do AFTER a more serious interview to show how you have overcome the anger and become playful with it so basically use Ivan's/client doing his thing but then use the shots Jake took. Perfection in my opinion.
