Did anyone mention that (real) medium format digital - which is absolutely necessary for landscape photography - makes the 600/4 look as a cheap thing. A month ago, when I went for a mixed landscape/wildlife trip to Iceland, the Canon 600 IS mkII I brought with me was the 5th most expensive lens, and the 7th most expensive item in my bag.
That's the kind of conversation I don't have with my wife hahaha, she knows my camera gear is expensive but she doesn't know the exact prices of it or the total cost I've spend in photography 😂

Lol, just bought hyundai i30 2010 for 2900€, and r6ii 2700€ + rf 50 1.8, 200€ and EF70-200mm L ii 2.8, 900e and adapter ef-r, 100€.. So yeah, so true in my case, all in span of 3 months
My wife complains that I have had GAS all our married life. 34 years. (Both types) I was also a guitarist, and cameras have overtaken my guitars 8 to 7. To make Sofia a little happier, I think I've spent almost $55,000 au in gear and things like printers (44 inch), computers, and stuff that I may never use again. Good luck...
Thank God my wife and I have separate businesses. I spent over $50k in the last few years on gear. It really helped my write offs during tax season this year 😂
Just picked up that Rokinon lens yesterday, looking forward to seeing what it can do. Crazy the amount we spend on gear sometimes. Beats spending it on drugs and alcohol is how I look at it. 🙂

My wife assumes the value behind all my gear is much higher than it actually is. In Canadian dollars, I'd estimate my total value is around $7000. Most of my lenses are used, my lights are mostly off auctions, my printer and bag was off an auction, and only my camera and action cam is new. If it was all brand new, it would easily be $12k, which is what my wife assumes.
Valuing the price of lenses by weight is a really good guess actually. Polycarbonate lenses made from plastic are lighter and less expensive than the metal/glass counterparts.
I guess the blessing (and the curse) of having a partner who is also into photography (or at least knowledgeable) is that they know how much all the gear costs and there are no surprises. But also, you can't sneak something past them.
Maybe you can answer a question for me. Do music-based TH-cam content creators have photography gear as background props? Because it seems like a lot of photography-based channels have musical instruments as background props, assuming they're shooting the video from inside their home. My brother is a professional musician, so I get what you're saying about musical instruments. While he owns several instruments that cost a pretty penny, his "baby" is his bassoon - major bucks on that.

Too Funny, my wife freaks out anytime I start talking about getting new gear. Just on Computer equipment gear alone, I'm in for about 12K, then there's Camera gear, lighting gear, stands, tripods, filters, drones, mics, action cameras, batteries and a few bags to switch out my load when I'm going on a location shoot. I shoot nikon and I'm now planning on adding the Z6III and Z8 to my kit soon, then the FTZ adapter, cage, a z lens or two... yeah that's going to go over well. Loved this episode. The biggest point to make you rethink a purchase is how much will it generate for you. Other than that it’s just cool to have the latest greatest. Unfortunately people are hip to this and take advantage of techies on the business end.

I started shooting in high-school using an old nikon d5100 i found in our house and never really bothered to look at lenses or accessories, so i had no idea how expensive this hobby was going to be until just last year when i bought my own camera for the fist time. One year into taking photography a little bit more enthusiastically, ive spent around 3k + usd already like damn im not even a professional photographer lmao

I really suffered with Gear acquisition until about 12 months maybe 18 months ago and I sold everything that cost me a lot of money and I bought lots of stuff that cost me next to nothing my photography if anything has improved and my photographs no longer look like they are over sample digital photographs. In fact when I show my cameras to any photographer friends and show them the images I am getting from them which is mainly Olympus micro four thirds cameras they can't believe how cheap they were and how good the images are.

It brought a smile to my face to know you have at least been able to pay for your gear. I’ve spent thousands on camera gear that just sits on the shelf or rarely gets used on my travels.

Ha! Small potatoes. I have 40 lenses for my Canon system, and lots of converters / adapters / filters. I have an old digital Pentax system, and an older Pentax film system. In addition to the Canon system, I currently use 3 Insta360 cameras (X1, X3, Ace Pro), and old Sony F828 (for infrared), Olympus TG-6, Lumix TS-200, Nikon P7700. For Processing / viewing / file back-up I have an 8" tablet, 12.4" tablet (brand new addition), a mini travel laptop, and a 14.4" Surface laptop. So you can at least you can defend yourself by saying, "At least I'm not as bad as Ray!"

Having just moved from APS-C to full-frame, and thus needing to replace my whole system, it's a bit of a relief to realize that, however much I may have spent on it, it’s still far less than the prices you've given for the equivalent pieces.
All good fun. It don't matter how much you spend on kit. If its' what your into then so be it. Could be worse, could be in the pub or down the betting shop everyday. Nice to have something to show for your hard earned. Upto now my camera gear is still dwarfed by what I used to spend on Mountain bikes and accessories. Wife used to moan about having X mount of bikes, to which I'd reply "do you really need 5 sewing machines" 🤣

My question is: why do you own a 70-200 F/4 and a 100-500? They almost entirely overlap, no? Why not get a standard zoom to cover the 35-100mm gap? (unfortunately in RF, they don't have many interesting standard zoom options, like the Tamron 28-75 for example would fit well in that gap, but the 24-105 costs the same as the 70-200 f/4)

I just bought a Leica 50mm 0.95 Noctilux two weeks ago brand new because I wanted to own one and still haven’t used it while it lays on a table littered with clutter from Amazon packages of random stuff I need for the house. My Nikon Z9 is on another table with the Z135mm Plena. I’m planning on buying the new Canon R5 Mark II and the RF85mm f1.2. None of these come close in value to the most expensive items I own and collect (that is not camera gear) I’m not rich, I just work very hard, I’m a collector, so I work sometimes for months or even years ( because I don’t earn a lot) to buy the good things I want. But everything I buy I study and research for weeks on end before buying
Between Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fuji, I think I'd want only one of the brands. Too many different operational modes would break me. The Noctilux on the Z9 seems cool.
If you have the R5 I would get a new lens instead of getting the Mark 2, it's definitely a nice upgrade but not enough to justify all of the extra money in my opinion. same sensor size, a little bit faster read out speed and better auto focus is not worth spending extra thousands of dollars for me anyway
When i worked at a camera shop, i customers knew they could come to me and i would print them a "wife" receipt that had cheaper prices or put another price sticker that was more expensive so the wives would think that box price was the sale price lol

Well I realize that I'm very lucky, because I've roughly spent 50k€ over the last 18 months on photography related equipment and my wife is actually okay with it. And I didn't even earned a dime with all of that. It's just for my personal enjoyment !

My wife has no idea what I paid for my camera gear but my first camera 40+ years ago cost more than my first car, ironically it's true today too.

My wife doesn't know what things cost, but know its expensive. She also knows that I only buy gear from money I make using said gear! Doesn't come out of our account, just the business account!

I just bought a Leica 50mm 0.95 Noctilux two weeks ago brand new because I wanted to own one and still haven’t used it while it lays on a table littered with clutter from Amazon packages of random stuff I need for the house. My Nikon Z9 is on another table with the Z135mm Plena. I’m planning on buying the new Canon R5 Mark II and the RF85mm f1.2. None of these come close in value to the most expensive items I own and collect (that is not camera gear) I’m not rich, I just work very hard, I’m a collector, so I work sometimes for months or even years ( because I don’t earn a lot) to buy the good things I want. But everything I buy I study and research for weeks on end before buying
Between Nikon, Canon, Sony, and Fuji, I think I'd want only one of the brands. Too many different operational modes would break me. The Noctilux on the Z9 seems cool.

If you have the R5 I would get a new lens instead of getting the Mark 2, it's definitely a nice upgrade but not enough to justify all of the extra money in my opinion. same sensor size, a little bit faster read out speed and better auto focus is not worth spending extra thousands of dollars for me anyway

Those Maven filters are worth their weight in gold. I love mine! Big investment but well worth it if you take care of your gear.
When i worked at a camera shop, i customers knew they could come to me and i would print them a "wife" receipt that had cheaper prices or put another price sticker that was more expensive so the wives would think that box price was the sale price lol

so for the tons of iphone vs high end pro camera videos on youtube. was it worth it? will iphone make all of this purchase obsolete in the next 3 years? im figuring out if I should invest on this career or run away from it due to oversaturation, AI and tech catching up ( for the untrained eye) to profesional cameras.

Well I realize that I'm very lucky, because I've roughly spent 50k€ over the last 18 months on photography related equipment and my wife is actually okay with it. And I didn't even earned a dime with all of that. It's just for my personal enjoyment !

I think you should remind Sophia that if you get your camera gear used at MPB or KEH that it is always cheaper than full price ... but you'r not gonna get a brand spanking new R5 Mark II on MPB ... 😁
