@@alexfagard3618 I think it is in this case - the lighting from the crew one is following basic cinematography rules and 3 points lighting techniques whilst the Jake's solo one isn't, as he didn't have the time - also this is shot in r3d meaning WB and iso are controllable, with some power windows you can pretty much do anything in post, this grade was just bad
INSANE video boys, you guys crushed it. No one is doing this, big respect. I thought hair and make up in the 10 person scene was a little too perfect looking, and wish there was more room tone light behind the guy, make the key look super sourcey. Overall both insanely good!
I personally think Jake's was better overall. One of the only things that really stood out to me were the audio of the ten man film crew, in which it is extremely apparent that it was done by someone who specializes more in that area, and someone who is really really good in that area as I might add, Doug May is incredible. The other thing that stood out to me was the wardrobes. I think the wardrobes for the ten man crew told more of a story, as the art director said, and I think it was also apparent that that was handled by someone who specializes more in that area than Jake does. Overall, I think Jake's felt far less hectic and felt more intuitive in how it expressed the emotion of the scene.
The 10 men crew one felt somehow over processed and stiff, like it was the 20th take or something so all the authenticity of a real conversation faded away but it did looked more professional in the technical areas. In the 1 man crew you can really see the vision of a creator coming true. It feels much more natural and raw. It was also really great having the actors bring their own clothes and doing their own hair because it looks perfect for the actors themselves which gives the sense of realness. Overall it was such a great video and it was really interesting seeing the true process of making a movie in all of its different aspects. Amazing work! 👏
I'm happy to see that my 1-5 man crews I use is perfect for the quality I need. Awesome video! This channel has become the best in the filmmaking community!
I'm really loving the contrast between these takes. In the 1-Man crew, although shot pretty simple, I feel more connected with the scene and the characters, as the colors feel more natural and the performance feels more real. While the 10-man crew feels so artificial because of the bright colors, the cinematography feels better and more engaging. Though, one thing I prefer are both the acting and clothing design choices on the 1-man sequence. It feels more natural like these are people in a bar, compared to the 10-man crew sequence, leaving it more like a commercial. Overall, a great experiment, and loving these ideas!
I loved this video! I don't make film or anything, though I do love making scenes through photography and digital art. For me, I'd go in the middle with five people, because I KNOW I couldn't handle all of that by myself! Great work, Jake!! :D I also love the colours, the mood of the scene. I really like how cozy the 1-man-team scene was, by the way. I think I got a great mood with that one especially. :D
Fantastic one boyz, I'd love to know how much time a 1 man crew spent vs the 10 man. Being a 1 man crew myself I know it takes so long to prep everything especially if you want things to look decent 😅
I really liked this comparison! It shows a lot of things, but basically that a pro can do wonders by himself, but that next level needs the crew and more attention to details. I think I liked the male talent's look without makeup more, he looked more natural that way.
In Jake's position, I would DEFINITELY appreciate having the help from all the other awesome people who specialize in what they do, but honestly I liked Jake's solo version better! It felt more raw, real, authentic, natural. Only thing I preferred from the 10-man crew was the sound & music.
Jake u did awesome bro… for a 1 man, you shot this scene better than most production companies wer I live. Keep up the good work. Really talented and inspiring
You know, I really love that you guys do these, especially since I’m currently in the middle of (second attempt) producing my first ever short film (paying for everything myself, not really paying the random people I’m picking to act) with an idea that came to me. One man crew basically, and oh one of the scenes I’ll be acting in it.
I recognize Kyle from Red Finch. Always helpful and knowledgeable about the gear. And I've appreciated Brett's work from afar. I'd say one thing that was jarring to me in the 10 person crew version was the jump in lighting on the male actor between shots. In the wide, he's backlit and in the reverse shot, he's super high key with a black backdrop. It makes him look fake, like he's on a green screen.
as a filmmaker I had a pleasant time watching this making of, an enriching and exciting moment of sharing, it's great to work in a team where everyone brings their touch
I liked Jake's scene for many reasons.. Actors performence was real and spontaneous the pace was slower in comparison to the 10 men scene and made the dialogue sound deeper (I got emotional) so thats a win for Jake in editing skills. the sound was better (deep) and the lens selection was excellent specialy the last shot (it had to be tight). Lighting was great and more professional technically in the 10 men scene but the scene didn't feel as real to me as Jake's scene. Thank you guys for this video, it was really inspiring.
The wide shots and the two shot at the end def looked better on the 10 man but the reverse on the actor looked pretty bad. I feel it was mostly the lighting and then also makeup being completely overdone (I get that they were going for the RR look).Sound mix and camera move was truly what made the biggest difference.
First off this video is fantastic is so helpful and educational. Both teams did really good jobs and I can't believe we live in an age now that something so educational on filmmaking is for free on TH-cam. Something I noticed that hasn't been mentioned is how important the editing is. If you watch the original scene, they choose much better moments to cut from either actor. "But Ill tell you something" line from RR is exclusively on Garner's character. She's becoming more comfortable with him. When you cut away too fast, it feels like their connection isn't blossoming between both characters. Anyway good job to both teams.
Great job on both versions. Jake's version was more naturally lid and looked overall more natural. 10 man grew version definitely sounded better and had better visual language regarding to camera work and choices. Both had moments when each were better vs. the other version. But what got my attention most was the differences in acting. Maybe partly because the talents had a change to "rehearse" in Jake's version before the shooting of 10 man grew version but I suspect that having a grew on board Jake was able to fully focus on directing the talents instead of spreading his focus too widely that made the difference. Couple subtle acting choices that especially Amy made in the second version had a greater impact on me, thought in Jake's version there was at least one choice she did that I liked more. There were some added dialogue in second version too, but what really got me was couple subtle longer pauses/silent moments in the second version that had greater emotional impact and elevated the experience for me. The more the director is able to focus on talent, the better the performance usually is. Jake if you are reading this I would love to hear what was your experience (and if you had feedback from the talents) regarding directing the talent and helping them to bring the best possible performance on each version. Do you feel like having more time and focus on them made a difference, and if so in what way?
The 1-man version was much more natural and therefore better in my opinion. I was transported inside this intimate moment between this two characters and while I love camera movement way more than I should, it felt like no movement or less movement was the better choice for this scene. Great Job 1-man-crew.
Ya I much prefer Jakes scene. I felt it looked far more natural vs the 10 man scene. I agree with others who have pointed out that the 10 man shadows were totally crushed. The talent looked like they were under a spot light on a stage.
The one thing I noticed that wasn’t mentioned was the background song choice. I got a whole different mood out of the background music playing on the 10 man version. It was a little more sad sounding. It’s something that tugs on your emotions and it’s so subtle you don’t realize it’s happening.
This is one of the best videos I've seen on TH-cam in years. If you are a student studying film, it's a MUST WATCH! I think it's important to note, that in both cases there were time constraints. That's real world. I've been in video production my entire 45+ year career and there are always time, as well as budget, constraints. Here's a few brief observations from my POV on one man vs a full crew: First, don't get hung up on the dollars. If you have a "production budget" of $10,000 , use it. Get the right people, location, props, etc that you need to do the job right. If the budget for the entire project is $10,000 and you're a freelancer trying to make a living by yourself, well then, obviously you have to make more than $250 after costs but you still shouldn't hurt the production by trying to squeeze out every dollar for yourself that you can. Your client is spending the 10-grand. They want to see the best possible product. If they feel they got ripped off, they'll never work with you again. To me the thing I notice most was, when the director was free to simply direct, because he had a full crew, the performances by the actors were better and that is crucial. The greatest lighting and cool slider moves can't save a scene that's badly acted. The actors did a good job with the one man crew but a much better job with the larger crew and a sole director position. Thanks for creating this y'all. Great job!!!
Me too. In general. The lighting on the female actor was a bit better on the 10-person crew (she just needed a bit of hairlight in Jake's 1-person version), but other than that and some lens choices, visually I felt Jake's was more appealing. (No offense to the rest of the crew! They were both great!) But I'm also a fan of motivated, "natural" feeling lighting, and the lighting/coloring on 10-pp crew version was a bit too stylized for this kind of scene.
I preferred some of Jakes lighting better on subject I think he competes well in that area. I definitely preferred the longer lens over that choice of wide. Wide seems less serious less cinematic for this type of short. The long lens grabs the emotion better. The larger picture would be time savings. If one person does all the tasks it adds up. With a crew you cut that time easily in half and more. That’s the larger benefit. Great job Jake! Thanks for this guys!
it would have been good to know for comparison what time it actually took to get one setup done. Does Jakes 1 man crew needed double the time to finish it off? Its all about efficiency and quality vs cost. we just saw the quality and the costs. also to my suprise, i liked the acting + looks of the 1 man better. the male talents hairstyle just matched better to the personality and the setting imo. in the 10 man their chat was less touching and i felt less connection between them somehow great video, great comparison, overall awesome idea! keep it up ;)
I felt something "weird" on 10 man crew scene. The shadow on actor face is in the difference side at the face compared to the actress. That's make I feel the actor is on a different ambient.
One man crew for me. In the 10 man crew the shots of Adam were weirdly bracketed by the lights mounted on the back wall. The same shots with one man crew only had the neon sign hanging in the back and seemed more natural to me.
As a video editor myself, one thing that I really don't like is that "10 man crew" shot of the lead actor, specifically editors/colorist choice to make it seem like dreamy, out of place. It's as if the background is greenscreened. Other than that, it's really good. Would have done few more shots of the lead actress, to get her initial raspy voice a bit more smooth, but other than that 10k is worth it. A hell of a less hassle for a decent chunk of change as a one day job.
One thing I haven't seen too many people talk about is the editing. The 10 man crew edit was very polished and not jarring like the 1 man crew one. It's very subtle and I feel like that's a reason a lot of comments haven't said anything about it.
It's weird, I thought Jake's cu of the female talent looked way too soft especially compared to all the other shots. But I also thought the male talent shot on the 10 man crew looked really awkward, like it was overly graded or green screen. But overall, awesome bts video!!
Having a bigger crew is definitely the way to go, but it's also smart to learn all the roles. For instance: Back in the summer of 2020, we were only allowed to have a certain number of crew members on set (Thanks Covid) , so we had about a 4-5 man crew throughout the duration of filming. Some days, you have to wear a lot of hats.
I think the 10 man crew's background is way too crushed. They have a great space and you don't see any of it. Also I think the their color saturation is way over the top. Hands down the one man crew nailed it. I would have added some camera pill-ins in post production to sell it a little more. Great job.
Ever since this dropped Aputure has been silent. Lol For real though I love all the hard work and creativity that went into this and the budget. This is quality and inspiring!
I think the whole one man crew was way better than the ten man crew! Lighting, camera, acting, the whole thing was so much better As I see it less is more! And the camera shots was a bit smoother too.
WOW man, great job all around. The latest films I've worked on, I was the DP, Video & Audio Editor, Colorist, and sometimes a one man crew like one I'm shooting tonight, three actors and me on camera, lighting and sound, plus I'll be editing and color grading it as well. It is so stressful! I think the one man crew version had the best camera angles and Jake knows what he's doing in all departments.
I think jake got much better performances out of the actors when he had the 10 man crew, but I liked the color grade on his solo version better. The sound design and lens choice on the 10 man crushed it tho. Just had a much more Hollywood look. The solo screamed local short film with a budget.
Dude wtf! The colors and the image is terrible on the 10 men crew. The skin tones are way too orange and looks like it was shot with an iPhone (too digital and over-denoised) Whereas the one man crew just nailed it. Looks like a legit Hollywood movie.
personal taste, but I disagree. the 1 man crew looked a little more flat and clinical (like a film set. :EDIT: to be clear for 1 man it's great, better than I can currently do). the colour and lighting on the 10 man crew looked dark and moody like it was happening in the real world (looks more like a david fincher film..... reminds me a bit of the opening scene in "the social network"). both did great overall though
It’s impossible to work as a one man on cinematic project and here is why !!! …this is a simple Scene ! and everything is copied for the purpose of the video i get it and it’s okay ..but when we deal with clients with tall storyboard and new scenarios and scripts and new video ideas and the video should submit in one week at minimum! The one man will do so trash work and it’s fact coz he will have no time and he will never be able to do all his thoughts in this short time ! in the end …if i want perfect results same what we all agreed about as a perfect results !! I need to pay the one man more than what i will pay for the crew !! Coz i need everything in extra time as location and cast and equipment ! By the way I’m same jack i can do all but would never do it with my projects Overall Jake did good results but we see that colouring is not good at all with bad skin tone Lightning flat ! And for the movement of the camera was boring movement as a cinematic movement And sounds design was really bad not even close to cinematic And for the crew I just didn’t like the work of the director coz he can do better and control the team better! And there is absolutely no fairness in choosing the same director for both sides of the comparison
I absolutely loved this. Great project, thanks for sharing! Totally agree with you on the colour side of things, I was shocked at that. 10 man felt a little OTT.
before i realised what OTT stands for i thought of the OTT audio plugin which is a multiband compressor and it conveyed what youre saying even better than the actual meaning.
In the age of Tiktok and social media, 1 person crew is all you need. Sure having a big crew may look slightly nicer but no one will remember it after 1 day.
The acting was also much better the second time. I think the lines were delivered more naturally and the gestures and movements were more natural as well. All in all, this was great.
I honestly liked Jake’s version more because I thought the ten man crew look cgi in the background of the Reynolds shot. Jake’s shot looks more realistic and natural. Props to Jake.

This is incredible content. Thank you.
1 Man is the best for sure! More intimite, natural and in all aspects much more immersive for me.
I loved this video! I don't make film or anything, though I do love making scenes through photography and digital art. For me, I'd go in the middle with five people, because I KNOW I couldn't handle all of that by myself! Great work, Jake!! :D
I also love the colours, the mood of the scene. I really like how cozy the 1-man-team scene was, by the way. I think I got a great mood with that one especially. :D
Its jaw dropping to see how much work you guys put in to creating this! Absolutely amazing. Loving what I'm learning from you peeps
Fantastic one boyz, I'd love to know how much time a 1 man crew spent vs the 10 man. Being a 1 man crew myself I know it takes so long to prep everything especially if you want things to look decent 😅
We actually each had 4 hours!! That’s why i had to rush things haha
@@JakeWeisler thanks! 🙏♥️
@@JakeWeisler Only 4 hours!? Ouch!! You gonna go far, dude!!
Bro I learned so much about production from all angles in this one video.. there definitely neeeed to be more of this, please
I really liked this comparison! It shows a lot of things, but basically that a pro can do wonders by himself, but that next level needs the crew and more attention to details.
I think I liked the male talent's look without makeup more, he looked more natural that way.
My god the audio difference is astonishing
In Jake's position, I would DEFINITELY appreciate having the help from all the other awesome people who specialize in what they do, but honestly I liked Jake's solo version better! It felt more raw, real, authentic, natural. Only thing I preferred from the 10-man crew was the sound & music.
Jake u did awesome bro… for a 1 man, you shot this scene better than most production companies wer I live. Keep up the good work. Really talented and inspiring
*I agree with hiring a Soundman. That one-man crew is very good for Shorts.*
Jake actually did a great job considering he was a one-man crew. The actors were great.
Impressive acting. That a directional microphone can produce that velvet voice tone is incredible.
1 man crew had more consistent lighting than the people that did the actual move 😅🤣
10 man band switched the light around on the actors. And those bright spotlights in the background are burning my retina.
wow that Guinness is standing out too much, my eyes are caught into it like flies, and overall with other lighting, composition, I give it a 7/10.
Change your eyes. 😂😂
Agreed. Much better in the one man
The 1-man version was much more natural and therefore better in my opinion.
I love the first one if I have to choose for film because it’s more natural but for youtube i love the second one all of you are amazing
Once again, thanks to the full crew! You guys are so amazing!
Jake's version crushed it!! Make-up was way overdone in 10 man version.
Brett!! Awesome to see you do your stuff!
Interestingly, I kinda liked Jake's work a little bit more- minimalist lighting, actors' look and lens choice.
Me too.
I love the 10 man crew one. Really cinematic
Waiting for that video all my life! Ty!
The sound design aside I would go with the 1 man version every time, especially with regards to lights and coloring.
Simply amazing to see the behind the scenes on what it takes to film the perfect shot, both were amazing :)
it would have been good to know for comparison what time it actually took to get one setup done. Does Jakes 1 man crew needed double the time to finish it off? Its all about efficiency and quality vs cost. we just saw the quality and the costs.
also to my suprise, i liked the acting + looks of the 1 man better. the male talents hairstyle just matched better to the personality and the setting imo. in the 10 man their chat was less touching and i felt less connection between them somehow
great video, great comparison, overall awesome idea! keep it up ;)
Really love that focus pulls that 10 man crew did for the last shot!
I felt something "weird" on 10 man crew scene. The shadow on actor face is in the difference side at the face compared to the actress. That's make I feel the actor is on a different ambient.
Man, the acting of that guy really had me forgetting that I was watching a BTS, lmao.
Friends, as always, you have pleased me with your graduation. Thank you so much for doing this.
It's weird, I thought Jake's cu of the female talent looked way too soft especially compared to all the other shots. But I also thought the male talent shot on the 10 man crew looked really awkward, like it was overly graded or green screen. But overall, awesome bts video!!
Right? What is the point of shooting in an expensive set that ends up looking like a greenscreen shot?
Lighting, camera, acting, the whole thing was so much better
As I see it less is more! And the camera shots was a bit smoother too.
Seeing the difference the lighting did to the atmosphere/ on the 10 man crew was my favorite.
Is that Ryan Gosling?
😍
WOW man, great job all around. The latest films I've worked on, I was the DP, Video & Audio Editor, Colorist, and sometimes a one man crew like one I'm shooting tonight, three actors and me on camera, lighting and sound, plus I'll be editing and color grading it as well. It is so stressful! I think the one man crew version had the best camera angles and Jake knows what he's doing in all departments.
I prefer the 1 man crew. Looks raw. 10 man crew the male actor looks too clean
Unreal team! So great to see this pull together! Jake your a monster! Thanks for sharing your talents !
I think jake got much better performances out of the actors when he had the 10 man crew, but I liked the color grade on his solo version better. The sound design and lens choice on the 10 man crushed it tho. Just had a much more Hollywood look. The solo screamed local short film with a budget.
Amazingly high effort content, love the way that this was put together. Great job everybody
Dude wtf! The colors and the image is terrible on the 10 men crew. The skin tones are way too orange and looks like it was shot with an iPhone (too digital and over-denoised)
Whereas the one man crew just nailed it. Looks like a legit Hollywood movie.
Yea, I’ve shot stuff on my pocket 4K that looks 10x better than either of these with very simple grading
personal taste, but I disagree. the 1 man crew looked a little more flat and clinical (like a film set. :EDIT: to be clear for 1 man it's great, better than I can currently do). the colour and lighting on the 10 man crew looked dark and moody like it was happening in the real world (looks more like a david fincher film..... reminds me a bit of the opening scene in "the social network"). both did great overall though
ok the dude acting is an incredibly good actor. He's just got that leading man quality in him
It’s impossible to work as a one man on cinematic project and here is why !!!
By the way I’m same jack i can do all but would never do it with my projects
Overall Jake did good results but we see that colouring is not good at all with bad skin tone
Lightning flat !
And for the movement of the camera was boring movement as a cinematic movement
And sounds design was really bad not even close to cinematic
And for the crew I just didn’t like the work of the director coz he can do better and control the team better!
That's a sad true
19:07 21:04 that’s why Foley is necessary
My take away from this video: Do your goddamn project on your own. 10 men crew wasn’t bad, it was hideous.
Haha. Jake did awesome. And the acting was better because he was directing.
The acting was also much better the second time. I think the lines were delivered more naturally and the gestures and movements were more natural as well. All in all, this was great.
