Part 2 of our red dot pistol series with Modern Samurai Project (Scott Jedlinski). There is much debate on what distance to zero your pistol red dot. 10 yard or 25 yard red dot zero? So let's discuss. Thanks to Scott for the great info.
What is the 1911 Syndicate? We do a few things. We started out as a real estate company primarily targeted at serving the military/LE/shooting/hunting communities. I suppose that depends on the situation. Personally, I never settle. Good enough is never good enough if there's room for improvement. It's not the first shot that wins a gun fight, it's the first accurate shot.
Another good one - not perfect, but acceptable.
Jedi makes shooting red dots seem like an art form. I love it.

Self defense at home, restaurant, work, vehicle: 6MOA, 10 yards. I stopped treating my CCW piece as a precision target shooting piece a long time ago, and it all made sense for 6MOA and 10 yards.

@@kalanipitmon7817 Just a dot. When you get to a range or your back yard and can shoot it, zero the dot then whereever the dot is, is where the round is going to land. It seriously changed my shooting and I was able to place follow up shots very quickly. Plus my eyes are getting older, and the dot helps with that
Wouldn’t zeroing at 25 yards make the offset better than 10 yards for close shooting though?
@@Moresco24 Its just up to the shooter and what they are comfortable with. For where I travel locally and where I live, 10 yards is just right for my CCW handgun for outside, stores, home and so on.

This was amazing. I can put my pride away, and zero at 10 yards.
I've zeroed from a bench, my logic being, remove as much shooter deviation as possible. if the sight is dead on then I can know that anything other than that is shooter error
Always been my logic as well; it is the same as zeroing a rifle prone or from a bench. I have never sighted in a rifle standing nor seen it done. This is the first time I have seen this dude on TH-cam and won't be watching any more. If my pistol can put every shot through one hole at 10 yards, then I need to be able to use my pistol to its fullest extent. He had an excuse every time he shot crappy. The use of profanity every other word as an instructor automatically displays a lack of professionalism to me. But, to each their own.
I think a bench zero is good but I'll occasionally adjust elevation when confirming offhand because sometimes the bench changes how the gun recoils. I'll never adjust windage though and if it's different, then i assume it's just me. I've discovered that if i only rest my arms on the bench but not my hands or the gun there's usually no difference from offhand. I'm somewhat new to red dots so my theory may not be perfect. I always zero rifles from a bench or prone.
@@johndeaux9987 Lol you are joking right? Scott is SME when it comes to Red Dots.
I used to zero everything on the bench, but a couple instructors made good enough points to change my mind. The one that brought it home for me was the fact that good marksmanship at its most basic level is consistency. The bench changes your grip, head/eye position, and overall sight picture. The differences may seem small, but the effect on accuracy is huge. I get taking the human factor out of the weapon, but everyone’s shooting techniques are going to be different, so why not take those into account when establishing zero?
@@johndeaux9987 yeah I cringed when he shot whack twice and made excuses. For what he charges and how much he shoots he better be able to hit the 3 in the square at 10 it’s really not that hard
I like his no BS approach. Some tacticool instructors just love to overly complicate everything and then you’re overthinking everything. Which you won’t be thinking about in an actual self defense encounter.
Jedi has a good perspective because he’s not interested in teaching tactics. It’s a performance class
Y’all out here doing the lords work, this information is so important. Every one knows red dots are the way to go. This man in explaining why and how to use em. This is good stuff. Plenty of people who aren't making the switch, I think it's time for people to switch though. Holosun, Trijicon, Aimpoint... Pick your poison and get to it.
I can't recommend Scott's Path to Performance class enough. The dude is a master teacher.

@David 99 Check MSP site. $600-$700 depending on how many days. Just took a 2-day in LA--best money I could spend on myself. Excellent class. Exponentially elevated my speed and accuracy.

I just put an RDS on my walther PPq.. today i zeroed the gun on the range at 10y with my ammo.. 3 rounds on 1 inch square .. the guys told me to shoot from a bench and to use soft ammo.. I did like he said in the video .. !! then dialed the dot with the proper setting.. hit not far from the square with the next three round ... dialed one more time and then hit the square with the last three round.. They looked me with strange eyes .. but then as the training was done they at least told they would never expected such good results as i had .. Thank you form italy

Great stuff ! I’ll only zero from the bench @ 25 when first firing a new pistol and dot combo just for shits and giggles - after that I’ll do 10 yard from standing position and re- confirm an acceptable 15 or 25 standing - Ongoing will just confirm at 10 from standing and check that the mounting screws and battery tray haven’t loosened. at the beginning and end of every range session

I did everything you mention in this video just based on my experience as a precision rifle guy. 100% about the small difference between 10/25 yds. I personally zero at 25 with the intention to shoot USPSA one day soon so I know I’m dead on with the far targets and close up it’s still in the A zone. Managed to walk my Glock out to 100 yards and it was way easier than I thought
Sig Sauer classes teach a 15 yard zero. I zero all my pistol dots to that and they are all very accurate at distance.
I think the whole issue is overblown, but on playing with ballistics calculators 15 seemed the flattest. Within 1.5 deviation clear to 90ish yards

Thanks for the video. I just picked up a few red dots for the first time and, as mentioned in the video, spent way too many rounds and multiple trips chasing a perfect 25 yard zero. I actually took pictures and obsessed over a 3 inch groups set perfectly in the center of a b8 because I felt like it should be smaller. SMH

Thanks for sharing this. After this, I'm not going to obsess over getting that perfect zero, because as you said at the end, it *IS* me. My guns are going to far more accurate and better than what I am able to do, so improve myself first and don't blame the tool.
A few years ago, there was a guy at the range who was having a difficult time with his G20. He could barely keep the holes on the target, much less in a consistent group. I was a few bays down and was on my way out for the day and he asked me if I could put a few rounds through his gun just to see if it was him or the gun. He could see that I was a relatively decent shooter and I was shooting a G23 that day. I obliged and though the recoil was marginally more than I'm used to, I managed to do a 10 round, 9 ring group with his gun, with several in the 10 ring or better. I just showed him that 1, it wasn't the gun, and 2, he doesn't need to be scared of recoil. At the time, I was smaller than he was... I reminded him that he just needs to return to the basics of marksmanship, don't worry about recoil, and he'll surprise himself. His next group was better than mine...
I've met a few good instructors over the years and clearly this guy is excellent at teaching.

Great vid of what i can imagine is a great class. "It's always me..." sounds just like me at the range lol. There's a guy here in Michigan with a class called (jokingly) You Suck It's Not the Gun. It's one of the best entry level classes out there.
Great video. I agree 100% on the zeroing. Most if not all people can't outshoot their zero. If it's within a couple inches who cares?

Depending on optic height, a 10 yard zero gives a longer point blank range. Usually a 10 yard zero is also a 55-65 yard zero. But like the instructor said, the difference is small enough not to really matter.

With the B8’s, I have my good days and my bad days. With my PDP and a 507, 100/4x is fairly easy to obtain. Except today when 96/2X was all I could do. Switched to the Q4 and actually did worse! Irritatingly enough my old Kimber 1911 actually out shot the optic equipped Walther! It was hot and windy and I was tired and hungry, and I was shooting like crap. What I’m trying to say is if you’re having a bad day, don’t mess with your zero, wait until you’re “in the zone” to be sure.

I mainly moved to 15 just to try the middle ground of what everybody recommends, I’m with the guys and gals who do this for a living! 10 yards is the way to go, as you heard tho it REALLY doesn’t matter Lol mainly personal preference

Sad to say if you don't invest $$$ into your glock it will only perform like a glock on 20 yard targets. After installing KKM barrels and Timney Alpha triggers and sporting 1moa SRO optics now my G34 & G17L gives my Les-baers a run for the $$$. Loving these videos my friend and the content is always great. I should know because I watch alot of TH-cam in my old age. 😁 👊🇺🇸🇺🇸💪
I respectfully disagree with that concept. I carried a Glock most of my 20 years in LE and we regularly shot 6 inch steel at 50 yards with factory weapons and no red dot optic. We often messed around putting rounds on a silhouette target at 100 yards.

@@johndeaux9987 Well what you said earlier was wrong lol, I have 10 different glocks, from factory to 2k ones. And the results from a factory glock to my 2k ones are astonishing. Sure grip/stance/ and everything comes in to play, always. But better guns do indeed make you shoot better. I can shoot 50 rounds into a 4inch nra target at 25 all day with my staccato P and cz shadow 2. I cannot do it with 9 out of my 10 glocks.

Free handed I cannot hit much better with any duty pistol than about 4 1/2” at 25 yards. I honestly can’t tell ya whether it is 7, 8, 10, or 15 that I zero a pistol. I know most of us suck at 25 yards under pressure. Honestly cannot remember if I had a point to make.

With all due respect sir, How do you know the dot is shooting low, right , high or left if when the shot broke the dot was low, right, high or left? And I understand being able to call the shot and adjust accordingly. I just don’t understand why anyone would sight in any optic with an unstable platform, ie offhand. Your content is awesome and maybe one day I’ll make it to one of your classes. Stay safe. 👋
Can compensators effect accuracy at a distance? My 7-10yds are all a-zone within inches, soon as I hit 25yds stray so far off the target it’s baffling and quite discouraging honestly.

Watched an two interesting videos on a 12 yard and one on a 15 yard zero and where the round print at 7 yards and 25 yards. I ended ended up zeroing both of my pistols at the 15 yards. Anyone else have any thoughts on that range?
I use a 15 yrd zero. It works well for me and how my brain process the target picture and hold over or under at 3-25yrds.
Depends on optic height over bore but i usually zero so that I'm dead on at 50 yards which works out to about a 12 yard zero. Not saying that's the correct way though.

A section of the course is spent on grip and it is a bit different than what I’m used to. With the information over load I mainly stuck to my normal grip
@@1911syndicate I was at this class as well, same about info overload & using my existing grip, but I've been working meantime to use Jedi's grip, especially more relaxed firing hand, and it's working better for accuracy on repeated shots especially. Thanks for posting this series, it's great reinforcement on all that info & knowledge Jedi gave us over two days.

Does a red dot help with marksmanship? I'm not the absolute best marksman in the world, but I don't suck either. For practicality, I'm where I need to be. I'm just a little apprehensive to even take my red dot to the range due to not having the confidence of zeroing it correctly.
Just ask for help. Or watch a video or two on it. It’s not tough to do 👍🏻
