      Im also in love with the game, even tho I haven't played xcom 2 yet, the gameplay felt sometimes like an evolution from XCOM EW, I just wish there was more variety to your soldiers, with more classes and ways to engage the battlefield. The biggest downside for me so far is the lack of the management aspect, I love the base building and admnistration aspects of XCOM, it adds another big layer of complexity and strategy to the game, and Gears Tactics would only benefit on that, even considering the Gears story and lore it would perfectly fit within it

      So as a Gears fan I just started Tactics and am having fun. I'm wondering how much of a step up one of the X Com games would be, hence me watching videos like this. Do you think it would be a huge jump? I'm playing Tactics on normal and for the most part have been fine, completing most optional objectives without a sweat. But this isnt my kind of game genre, so I'm curious...

      @@senecauk8363 tactics is a good entry game into the world of rts games it's similar in many ways except for certain gameplay features but xcom has more customization and larger open stages and more enemy varieties and a big difficulty jump... Highly addictive game if your liking tactics then maybe your a secret rts Fan...when it gets harder and your still playing then go ahead and get xcom

      @@senecauk8363 xcom is definetly a bit harder, mainly because it also has an management aspect just as important as the combat missions. However Gears is a very good introduction to the genre, and you will have an easy time learning the differences. Just some things to be ready for: Start by playing Enemy Within, not only is the "first part"of the story but also is better to a new player, XCOM 2 in some ways expect you to have already played the first and it also is an harder experience overall. You're also expected to lose some games until you finally nail down the gameplay in general, losing is kindda fun in XCOM tbh so I don't feel like it will be a huge problem for you, just don't think you're doing bad because of it XD. By last soldiers are expected to die, especially recruits. Different from Gears Tactics your initial soldiers work in a VERY restrictive way, you don't have too much customization right of the back, and they die pretty easily. I think that's the main difference from Gears Tactics, at the start you will not be able to do much, and even failing missions is kindda common, you're the underdog of this fight, you don't have any advantadge or heroes at the start, just a bunch of poorly equiped recruits. However thats what made the game so special for me, as you will progress and the surviving soldier go up some ranks and you make some new research the tables will begin to turn, just don't be expecting that enemies won't be evolving too...

  • @lolo0818
    @lolo0818 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    True. It certainly is similar in some ways.. but like you said, the part where they deviate from research/HQ/replayability etc kinda turns me off whenever I play Gears Tactics. I feel XCOM2 is more challenging and expansive since we have to manage our resources, plan our attacks, decide which handicap to face from the dark events etc.
    I'll admit that the overwatch cone with multiple shots in Gears Tactics is more interesting and made sense and XCOM should definitely implement that in its future games.
    In any case, well reviewed sir. Thank you.

    I consider myself terrible at all strategy games and I didn’t think I would like gears tactics especially after playing the too difficult for me a year ago, Mario+Rabbids but I decided to try it out anyway and boy do I love it, it’s easy to play and understand and definitely challenging but fair. As I’ve been playing and learning, I finally decided to just get the xcom 2 collection for the switch and I’m finding while complicated, it’s quite good as well and I’m getting better at them. Good exercise for my brain.

    • @trumplostlol3007
      @trumplostlol3007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Base building and research capabilities are very bad for new players. New players will always follow a wrong path and will have to restart the game all over again. It is not really strategic either cause the game isn't very clear about the pros and and cons of the building options and the Avatar project is constantly annoying you. And if you are not new to Xcom, there is no point in doing that again cause you have already figured out the right sequence of base building probably by failing so many times or from the information given by other players who have failed so many times.

    Gears Tactics is very linear... There is only a certain number of missions for each play through. This means the chance of not leveling characters up enough to pass certain missions, and getting "stuck". X-com gives you the ability to deal with the alien progress, essentially making a never ending game

    One thing he forgot to mention about Gears Tactics was that friendly fire goes both ways I enjoy running into an enemy cone of overwatch just to see them fire on their own. Now as a veteran of both Gears and XCOM, I prefer Gears. You'll never get that 98% chance to make a shot just to have it miss 85% of the time or feel rushed to complete your economy or die. Gears Tactics is lay-back fun. With a little bit of challenge as a tactics game should be...

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s where the subjectivity of “worth” comes into play. When assessing games, it’s important to compare them to other games, not just other elements of life. In that fair view of value, how many other games at that price point have great replay value and can be played with enjoyment for 3...4.... 10X that amount of time? The replay value of a title never used to be a big deal, but today it matters IMO.

    • @AlucardC99
      @AlucardC99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charlie Pryor You’re right. I really wish this game had a base building system like Xcom does. It really needed it! And that giant mining rig you live on is just begging to be a game mechanic and originally probably was. Must’ve gotten scraped or something early on. Overall I put like 39 hours on a play through on Insane so to me it was worth it

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AlucardC99 huge opportunity missed: when you go to “HOME” and it just shows you the base and nothing else meaningful. Could have had clickable structure to visit and interact with... thinking of DD or Battle Brothers in towns.

  • @teaoanimar
    @teaoanimar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When you say it's story driven instead of strategy driven, is it a really full story like Valkyria Chronicles or is it just more like your average action game with cutscenes?

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a well-done, but very linear, and the path you go down isn’t your own decision. It’s not like XCOM where the random encounters from the map and the strategic loot/personnel from those missions dictates your direction. You’re simply carried though this adventure that’ll be mostly the same the second time as it was the first. Your perk decisions and loadouts and stuff can change from playthrough to playthrough, but progression, and the maps for it, will be the same each time. The story is driving... not you.

    You should do comparison between XCOM: Chimera Squad and Gears Tactics, based on this those two are more similar to each others

    • @CharliePryor
      @CharliePryor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chimera is all out fun, but it’s less strategy than XCOM 2 and more strategy than Gears. It’s the same in regards to linear story, with less visual beauty (although the art style is kinda cool). Overall it does strategy worse than XCOM 2, Story and Gameplay experience worse than Gears, but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun. - one thing I will say though, is unlike Gears it has replay value, and because of the price and that fact alone, it’s definitely worth the price (to where Gears isn’t in my opinion).

      @RA You might call it trash, and I'd even agree that it does have some issues, but Chimera Squad isn't really all that bad, and at its initial price point, I think it was a steal. Gears Tactics literally cost over 6 times what I paid for Chimera Squad, and IMO it doesn't deliver 6 times the value - or even come close. GT and CS are actually fairly similar in concept - story driven with heroes who can't die, facing off against lots of opponents. CS even has many scenarios with infinite reinforcements. And while I'll agree that GT does it better overall, I repeat that when you factor in the price (particularly CS's initial price) CS is the better value game.
      As for the comparison to XCOM 2, I'll happily agree that GT has some nice ideas that improve on the formula. But XCOM 2 is an older game now, and you can pick up the complete bundle for less than half the price of GT. And while GT does improve on the formula, it also misses several of the things that make XCOM 2 great. The question to ask is whether GT is really worth twice the price of the complete XCOM 2 package, and to me, it's not. At this price point, I'd expect to be able to put in hundreds of hours into the game, just like I have with XCOM 2, and despite GT's improvements, I just don't see that happening. I can see it supporting 2, maybe 3 playthroughs, and that's about it.
