Today we're very excited to be sharing with you our first detailed hands on look at the Fanatec CSL DD! There has been a massive amount of hype surrounding this product, and thanks to your support we have been selected to be one of the first to put it to the test and share our opinions.
The aim today is to use this pre-production sample answer as many questions as we comfortably can, and arm you with as clear a picture as possible prior to reviewing the final production version.
We’ll be taking a look at the experience with the standard 5NM rated power supply, as well as the upgraded Boost Kit 180 which unlocks the CSL DD’s full potential of 8NM. We’ll take a look at the driving experience when mounted on the same high end cockpit we use for all our other wheel base reviews, as well as some cheaper mounting options, along with the optional Table Clamp Accessory to determine if the CSL DD is worth it for those not ready to step up to a more expensive cockpit, and of course compare the driving experience based on our personal experience to that of some other common wheel bases including Fanatec’s CSL Elite, ClubSport WheelBase 2.5 and of course the Podium DD1 and DD2, as well as some other relevant wheelbases from other brands.
We’ll also spend some time explaining some of the terms you’ve no doubt heard being referenced such as Direct Drive, Fidelity and Dynamic Range. By the end of this article, our hope is you’ll have a clearer picture of whether or not the CSL DD is right for you!

Funny. Higher end sim gear becoming more affordable and yet, the graphics card I need to run these sims at high end graphics have become more expensive than entire PC's.

    • @benvella1728
      @benvella1728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You can probably get away with much cheaper options and turn one or two settings down lower or off. The biggest bulk of graphics rendering are easily punched out by most low to mid range grahpic cards nowadays, and have been for a long time. It's those little things to "max out" that really cost. As always, the rule of diminishing returns applies.

I get discouraged seeing the length of Boosted Media videos before watching but Will had SO MUCH useful information that I end up not minding.
Being a subscriber, I know that Will likes using extreme high force and FFB compared to Joe average (7-8Nm). So keep that in mind and consider not waiting for another Fanatec offering between CSL DD and DD1!

Finally recieved it couple weeks ago still spending time adjusting and getting used to the new setup. But first impression is very positive. I've been using the CSW 1.5 for years. While V2.5 and CSL Elite were very tempting I'm glad I held off for this. There really is a distinctive difference between a DD and a gear/belt driven.

Very detailed review for an initial look, really great job guys. Thanks.
I would say that with extra dynamic range/maximum torque output some people don't need it to be competitive. However for other people it doesn't just add extra immersion but does improve laptimes and/or consistency. Some people need their sim to feel somewhat like real life which is not possible with lower torque wheels. Whether because they have real life driving/racing experience and can't adapt to the different feel of low force or some other reason I'm unsure.

Well said.. I personally feel like the belt driven G29’s and such are absolutely atrocious. So a step up from there is monumental. This is a downgrade for these guys no matter they review it.

SOLID review. Very happy to see that you were able to get hands on one! I have been patiently waiting for a review of this as I want to jump into my first DD and the price point for a newer SIM racer has been previously prohibitive until this new product. Hoping the pedal set gets the same positive review, as well I am eager to see what wheels are offered.. a more affordable BMW GT3 wheel would be REALLY nice...5k for the new BMW wheel is insane... almost same price as my real WRX rallycross car.. lol

Great review! As the owner of a Logitech G29 and Next Level GT-Lite cockpit, your comments regarding the power unit were very useful! I will definitely be getting the CSL DD with the regular 5nm power unit, and upgrade to the 8nm one whenever I get a sturdier cockpit. BTW, liked and subscribed! Thanks!!

I didn't knew the power of the G29 (~2.1nm from what I've seen) and I was worried about the power of the base version CSL DD but now that I know it's more than twice as powerful as my current wheel I went from cautiously excited to very, very excited and I have no doubt that I'll will upgrade to this as soon as I can.

The connector looks like a standard 4pin molex connector. voltage/current is the same as the CSL elite adapter, so maybe you can mod the csl elite adapter to power it.

I would not thrust a company so sloppy that would give away 8Nm for free 😁.
Seriously, Fanatic is taking advantage of the moment and pull in as many as they can in the ecosystem. The low every point is symptom.
      I will pay €500 for a Thrustmaster 12Nm base.

Coming from a Fanatec CSR, 5nm will be a step up in detail and power. Good to know. I have to go 5nm initially. I'll get the BK180 later. Life got in the way.
And while hovering over the option to add the BK180, my index finger twitched. Long story short, I have the BK180 on the way. :)
