Pay very close attention to the comments section, where we have half of the comments from queer people sharing personal negative experiences with hate, and the other half is from non-queer people saying the queer people’s experiences don’t/didn’t happen.
This comment might be a bit of a mistake but I think its a genuine miracle of mental gymnastics that people can see easily the (former) largest queer figure in the space (me) leaving in an extremely dramatic fashion and still not understand the impact. Anti queer sentiment and people's tolerance for it is the reason I never want to play pokemon unite again, plain and simple.
Exactly. You had to fight for your existence in the community in the first place, and losing an outspoken member of the queer community who was not only heavily involved socially but also within the pro scene just proves everything I discuss here. People would much rather tolerate anti queer sentiment so they can appeal to the majority.
please talk to a queer person with honest intent for once in your life, most of us are also anti child labor? Of all the populations to pull this kinda gotcha on this is one of the dumbest
One thing I tried hard to vocalise is the position we get put in in spaces that arent actively against homophobia/transphobia. How, when we are faced with what in any other contect is clearly unacceptable hate speech, in a space that is not commited to comatting that, a really heavy burden is put on us. Instead of being met with understanding and a refusal to tolerate queerphobia, we have to plead with people to do the bare minimum amount of moderation. And what happens too often is a "cant you guys just figure it out" or a "in a way, you asking for that person to be banned for what they said (hate speech) is you targeting that person if you think about it". The default in those spaces is not to handle the complaint, but handle the complainer, hoping that they can get by with complete inaction. Which makes any queer person trying to say "hey, this should be unacceptable behaviour" get painted as constantly complaining. You feel like in order to not be seen as the problem in those spaces you have to quietly accept being dehumanised, mocked and treated like garbage just because you have the audacity to be gay. And the most important part about that, is that people think that for gaming spaces to discriminate and push out queer people there has to be some nefarious bigot running it all. But in reality, its almost always the supposed allies who just dont really want to do anything about the transphobia or homophobia that make the space inhospitable to queer people. Thats because its those people that, consciously or not, dont want to make homophobes and transphobes feel unwelcome within their gaming space. Sure they may say "hey could you not say that" but then Ive also experienced those people saying "hey could you maybe talk less about the trans stuff here, thats not what this servers about" as though somehow its my responsibility to make sure people arent uncomfortable with me being trans. And it sucks and its awful and its very prevalent if you want to try to get into the more competitve spaces of Unite, so instead queer people are asked to leave their identity at the door or not go into the more competive scene. Its not that competive scenes are just uniquely filled with homophobes and transphobes, its that the standard of not allowing transphobia and homophobia in competitive spaces and meting out actual punishment for that behaviour is something that isnt practiced whatsoever. Its not a problem of bad apples, its a systemic problem of accomadating of queerphobia while also making out that people complaining about that systemic issue are hysterical and crazy.
Exactly, it’s probably true that many people in the community aren’t actually homophobic or transphobic themselves, but they’re not against it either. And I’m not sure why we still don’t see how much of an issue that is
@@roxaskinghearts I’m confused, how do you know I’m ignoring these things? What human rights are being attacked by encouraging equity for those who don’t currently have human rights?
Being a queer person in the Pokémon Unite community (and Pokémon community as a whole) is honestly a nightmare. For a game to be as cheery, bright and care free as Pokemon, the values of the fan base/corporate nobodies surely do paint a different story. I feel that Poke Co. themselves do not outwardly embrace the queer community in fear of their fan base not agreeing with their beliefs. While we have had gender-ambiguous characters (Such as Goh from the anime with aspects of having a feminine design and Cilan having a very flamboyant personality), they’ve never been viewed or stated to be LGBT+ characters. I do understand that sexuality and gender are sensitive topics but children also have the brain capacity to want to know they are included instead of having to loosely fill in the blanks of a “what if” story. On the topic of Pokémon unite, my experience with this community has been very bittersweet. As a transgender woman, my place in society is very thin and PU is no different. I find that I have to “pass” in order to be viewed in the way that I choose to. People will blatantly ignore pronouns, not play with you at all or go out of their way to exclude you from spaces because of their beliefs. It has gotten to the point where I will not talk in chats due to a fear of being attacked for my voice. Men have also made fun of my appearance and told me that I’ll never a “real woman”. Overtime, I have just done my best to stay out of the way and be coy about everything. You can’t get misgendered if you aren’t playing with people. You can’t be excluded by others if you never include yourself. I’d rather be safe than sorry, saddened, angry or embarrassed.
And the thing is, nobody will actually hold those people accountable. Maybe someone will say “hey that’s not cool” but they’re still allowed to exist in the community MORESO than you are. Which obviously a little video doesn’t do much about that, but it’s not a great thing to come to terms with.
