finally someone who didn't spend 10min in krita and say it's crap without giving it a chance, i use for animation everyday and i love it, thank you for the video! Love you Pikat
id say krita is similar to blender in user experience. its a powerhouse of a software and it does so much shit but theres a big learning curve and you can get overwhelmed easily, but once you learn how to use it you can really personalize it to your workflow.
@@garliecharlie absolutely agree, i just said that because i've seen some "reviews" of people that used for like 25min and expected to become a master, i had to use krita for 2 whole weeks to learn the basic stuff but generally i've been using for 2 years and there's tools and stuff that i didn't even think krita was capable of, also felt so good when i finally learned how to use krita!!
Really heartwarming seeing all the Krita fans here. Like Pikat said, it does have a steep learning curve (I even gave up on it once because I was just that unfamiliar with it) BUT once you learn the shortcuts and layers, brushes and painter's palette, it works like a dream!!😊 Iirc there's even a button/docker that has the presets of other popular art programs like CSP, so if you're coming in from another art program you can tweak it to you're liking in no time! I use Gimp, but only for touching up my traditional art and screwing around with silly designs or photo manips, it does seems super complicated though. The section on it in this video was amazing XD Your reaction to the Command Palette in Krita was adorable~!
you kind of forget how weird as shit blender UI is until you have to teach someone else how to use it. what i really like about blender is that it's somehow very consistent with how tools handle and shortcut works. It is consistently weird but once you get used to it, exploring other part of blender feels very easy
Been using ibispaint for 6 years and still ongoing, and I do agree that this app and its interface are tailored for phone usage. There are some limitations but generally it's just fine, only the issue of this app for me is brush customization isn't really as extensive compared to CSP or others, and sometimes zooming the artwork still makes it blurry or pixelated even with recommended settings.
You can hold Alt I think as you select and it will show a minus symbol next to the cursor as you use the select tool to deselect things, Idk if that's what you're referring to.
Back in the day, I made most pieces of my college admissions portfolio using GIMP 2.4 and when I told the person critiquing my portfolio he looked at me horrified lol I got accepted, somehow, so I guess there's some proof even with the shittiest art program you can succeed...but really don't use GIMP as your main drawing program in 2024 don't do that to yourselves 💀
Krita is so good! There are even extra resource packs that are packed in that you can activate, and plugins and lots of free brushes (and nice artists on the forum). It's why I picked an android tablet, I love some Krita.
Kristen is open source, so it is possible to make it extremely encompassing and multifaceted. I don’t use it personally, but many professionals do (especially if they can program)
As someone who mainly uses clip studio for pixel and Affinity designer for Vektor, I have to admit, Krita is pretty pretty good. And I wouldn't even say for a free software, just in general pretty awesome.
One thing being a beginner digital artist (mainly using CSP) is how very daunting it is. It's no video game that gives you a tutorial that's for sure. Honestly, I'd love to some tutorial videos on specific programs.
I use Krita as my main drawing app and GIMP as my main image editor. At least you pointed out correctly that GIMP is an image editing program, it's not trying to be used for digital art, though you can!
i'd like to offer an additional piece of krita propaganda: it doesn't crash often for me but if it does it's usually not a big deal because it has a pretty good autosave feature. you can also record your process. it's a great program overall it just takes some getting used to
I started with Gimp (the smudge tool is pretty unique in its function if you ask me which was the hardest thing to adapt away from) and honestly Krita was waaaaaay too hard for me to learn. The brushes were nice but as soon as you needed anything else it took ages every single time. I spent a full week in a drawing with it which should have only taken me a day or two. If anyone gets to a point where they feel comfortable in it, I commend them. (I think in Gimp to get transformations to confirm I would either select a different tool or open a new layer btw, but it’s been years so maybe I’m misremembering)
At my first high school our teacher in graphic media told everyone to download GIMP. He killed 8 computers in a week alone in our class and told us they earlier had access to photoshop but was saving money. GIMP is heavy load. edit: MS Paint for windows 11 both has transparency and layers.
It's less "drawing software" than it is "Image manipulation software". It has HUDNREDS of different manipulation options, but this comes at the expense of barely any standard art tools, up to and including PEN SENSITIVITY. If you need to make things through kitbashing, need to adjust colours from a completed art-piece, or generally manipulate your art at some point, then GIMP becomes more solid as it relies less on direct artistic tools in those cases.
firealpaca is pretty neat if you're starting off on digital art on your computer since there aren't too many settings though i ended up switching to csp because customizing brushes on firealpaca is kind of tough and i wanted a specific pixel brush texture which i couldnt find anywhere on firealpaca then again csp does annoy me sometimes because i want that same option to flip an entire layer which firealpaca has while i gotta find an entire workaround in clip studio (+ this entire ruler insanity you gotta do for symmetry...) that being said i like both!!! firealpaca has made the clip studio transition less overwhelming lol
I love krita but theres still alot that can improved on it. Even with the flaws i would nominate it as the thrid industry standard after photoshop and csp.
I used gimp for years before switching to krita and you get out of the scale tool by uhhhhhh by ummmmm by uhhhhhh idk the best way I've found is to go to the rectangle select tool and click?? it's very intuitive!
I don't know if kirta got better about it but it has in the past been hard on older pcs from personal experience. like if your pc was not beefy enough it would either lag or crash mid drawing. it isnt a bad app though it's pretty good when i used it(after figuring out the lag) also ms paint has a windows 11 version which does have layers ! (i still prefer the older version for nostalgia reasons tho)
Yay Krita! I did try out the new Gimp 3.0, which does fix somethings, (like being able to select multiple layers!) but it did have pressure sensitivity! It ended up crashing right when I was finishing my art with no backup, rip me.
As someone who dabbled in photoediting and shitposting i have to say that GIMP is the bane of my existence, i hate it so much and when i am forced to use it im simply suffering
Blender is not a digital painting app, its a powerful 3D app and even the grease pencil was designed for hybrid 2D/3D animations, so it was not supposed to be on your list.

But I will say I recently installed GIMP 3 RC to test that out and my tablet actually works great, it's just a little clunky to use the app itself. Mouse and tablet save selections separately, so if you choose a color with your mouse and switch to tablet, it will change to the tablet color selections. There's also some other bugs in GIMP 3 that would keep me from ever using it as my drawing app the way it stands, but I have hopes they will work that out just so I don't have to switch back and forth.

For all the features Krita has; there is no easy way to change the colour of your image. Or deselect selected sections. Or bucket fill effectively.
That and the brushes are just a bit... jittery in my experience compared to CSP. And I say this as someone who started in krita before switching over.
