Still want that Tesla? 2024 BYD Seal 3.8S review

  • BYD's been in the UK for a year now, so join me for my first drive in one - a full review of the Seal. It's a Model 3 rival, meaning it's an electric saloon that'll do 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds (hence the badge on the back), go for about 300 miles on a charge… or so it says here. Join me as I point out the niggled I've experienced living with one, as well as all the good bits.

Hi Tim , I’ve had a Tesla and have now purchased the Seal Excellence model you’ve just demo’d. 17:09
Hands down it’s much better than my Tesla.
The air conditioning and lots of other things can be done by voice control as like a mobile and your screen, you shouldn’t be messing about with it on the move.
Tell the car to alter the heating/cooling, wind windows up/down and lots more.
BYD had to add the bleeps to traffic signs and lane change etc.
to get the 5star rating in Europe to sell the car.
We are waiting very shortly to get the new download to stop this.
But of course you can stop it by pulling the menu down from the top of the screen.
The bings and bongs will be gone shortly.
The indicator arms have also just been changed to the correct way and mine has been changed over.
Of course there will be things that I can compare and miss about my BMW M8 but that’s life, you can say that about most things.
There are people out there that don’t and won’t change to EV’s and some that hate BYD, but after all that why we all have a choice in life.
I don’t like mini’s but I won’t knock them, as other people may like them…
Whatever car you drive out there , just love it , don’t knock anyone else’s choice.
Not everyone can afford a Lamborghini 😅😅

Hey mate, saying that the EV market is shrinking is misleading and common in the mainstream media. Truth is that sales have increased massively in the last year, it’s just that the rate that the market is growing at has reduced over the past few years. Where it was doubling, it’s been growing by 40 odd percent per year more recently. That WILL happen with any product as it becomes more and more mainstream

The reason why there is a delay in the acceleration is to improve comfort for the passengers. Usually chinese cars have a bit more focus on the passengers than the driver compared to European cars.
It is possible to turn off the warning sounds etc but it will turn on again when you start the car again. Sadly it does that because of EU regulations.

Here in NZ, we have a real mix of indicator stalks. We get lots of Japanese imports which all have stalks on the right. And we also have quite a few European cars, with stalks on the left. So you can say that us Kiwis are ambidextrous when it comes to indicating!
I still think it makes sense to have the indicator stalk on the right for a right hand side driver seat car, especially if there's a manual transmission as your left hand will be busy with the shifter. Yes, you can call me old school.

On balance though the Tesla just seemed to be the better all rounder, the infotainment is so good, climate control is super easy to use, you don't need to mess around with start stop buttons and it has loads of space. I think it going to be a very exciting time as the new economies tries to fight to be ahead in EV adoption as a way to leapfrog their infrastructure over established economies. its not just car brand that is compeiting or countries competiting for car production, but there is also a infrastructure "arm races" going on in the developing world which is really amazing...

I would definitely still buy a Tesla (I own one) as what it does and for an EV, it does right. Tesla’s design is good for my taste, it drives great, great electronic, great software and build quality is good enough. BYD releases a lot of cars, very low dedication to a model or software. It does a lot of stuff but masters none, besides it looks “too Asian” for me. Competition is great, I like Polestar and more brands leads to better products. Though I find most of them no competition for Tesla. I even see Mercedes fighting with a lot of lights, screens, etc but actually it’s not a so great EV experience as the price suggests…

You come out with some very odd anti-ev thoughts I have to say. Why would you still want to be reviewing ICE vehicles. Not a very good opening I have to say. Here in Australia, EVs are rapidly on the rise - I am looking a buying our second EV. Petrol/Diesel are just not an option and are of no interest to me at all. I am considering the Seal. I've sat in one and the build quality is outstanding. I already have the Atto 3 and know how good they are.

Why would I still want to review ICE cars? Because 80% of the UK private market is buying ICE. And they’ll be around for years! I’m not really anti-EV, I’m just less convinced by their long-term fit for the UK market than I was a few years back. Just as you’re not interested in petrols or diesels, there are people that have the same approach to EVs. All good!

I prefer it. It's fresh. All BMW's look the same from the front because they're imprisoned by their front grill. Their ev's, despite not requiring a grill, still has to be made to look like it would because their design language dictates it. A solution in search of a problem or at the very least the cart pulling the horse.

@@bw1376 one way to think about it is Toyota's look quite different from each other with the only real language carrying over is through the generations of that specific model themselves. This allows more flexibility in design while maintaining some continuity. Now, I'd be the first to admit, I can't remember the last time I thought a Toyota looked good. But since byd's a relatively new company, and doesn't have a gen 2 or 3 of the seal, we may see an approach similar to Toyota's and not BMW's, time will tell. But for now, I believe it's a little unfair to measure a new company via BMW's yard stick.

No-one wants an iPad-based control system in a car. It's terrible design on every level - it isn't intuitive, there's no feedback, it doesn't allow 'blind' find-by-feel operation so you can keep your eyes on the road, often it doesn't even offer at-a-glance views of the current settings. As soon as car-makers put dedicated, tactile controls with individual readouts back into cars all these single-screen-based dashboards will be impossible to shift. I'd like to see car reviewers being more critical of these. Not directed at Mr Rodie of whom I'm a big fan ;)

    • @azzanz

Think you are confusing a Tesla with the BYD Seal that has indicator stalks, heads up display, direction selection physical control Tesla does not. Not to mention the fact I really don't ever need to use any of the screen for things such as seat heating or cooling as you can just say it and there is your blind feel, as you don't need to be fumbling for any control, it just does it. Tesla has everything including the speed you are doing on a single tablet, so guess you should post that comment on Tesla videos.

    • @GT86crazy
      @GT86crazy 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I'm with you when it comes to commonly used controls. They need to by physical, e.g. indicator stalks, drive mode, wipers, lights. But non essential controls like temperature control, seat heaters can and should have the option of voice command. Lucky the Seal has pretty decent voice command recognition, which Tim didn't seem to test...

I’m glad Tim will point out the negatives, as the annoyances often become the enduring memory of a car!
The motoring press often ignore glaring issues, which they then admit to later in the vehicle lifecycle.
It’s really annoying to drive a car, immediately realise some design, or dynamics issue ruin it to own.
