Here in South Africa, the uptake of Chinese car brands has been significant. We’re just so tired of being charged an arm and a leg from the established brands for decades, particularly the Germans who will charge for something as basic as Bluetooth, or cruise control, etc, etc. I myself come from a history of having owned Opel (Vauxhall), VW, BMW and Audi. Am currently driving a Mazda, but when it’s time to replace it, I can assure you it will be Chinese. Even if you have no intention to buy a Chinese car (or an electric car), their mere presence in your market should ensure that the established brands will finally have to do some real work to keep your custom by improving their equipment levels, revising their pricing, and service levels. The more competition there is, the better for us as consumers.
That's exactly what's been happening in China for the past few years. Nowadays you can get a Mercedes EQE or BMW i3 for half its sticker price (EQE: sticker price - 500k CNY, actual price below 300k; i3: sticker price 400k, actual price around 200k). And even so they aren't selling all that well, which is why BMW has annouce yet more discount in the past few days. There's a popular saying in China recently: even if you don't like Chinese cars, you should support them, because that's how you get cheap foreign cars.
Germans are thinking of 4-day workweek. I guess they will soon need more people to take care of the same amount of work, thus, their products will be ever expensive in the long term. Also the increasing energy cost in Germany won't help in anyway...

The only reason it is over £40K is over £10K of British government taxes. In China the AWD Dual Motor version sells for just under £28,000 equivalent RMB. They have 3 versions in China so this one is the middle version which you can buy in China for literally half the price that it is in the UK with the same quality trim.
Yes but if you lease one you pay minimal tax. In two years time these will be £22K. The local BYD dealer has a low mileage 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 for that price.

Thank you for your great review on the Seal! I find so few women doing car reviews, when its is more useful to other females doing research on BEVs and PHEVs, on the practicality side (its not always about the speed and performance!) :) Can you please do a review of the BYD Sealion 6 (AU name) = BYD Song Plus (Chinese name) = BYD SealU (European name)?
The 2 big complaints about this car for me is the lack of one pedal driving, and the fact that the brake pedal behaves more like an on/off switch for the brakes, rather than progressive brake pressure based on how much pedal imput you give it. If at least the brake pedal issue is solved, then it'd be excellent in the price range, but as it stands it's pretty good at best.
And here in HK, Government is promoting for all EV brands "ONE FOR ONE" policy. We will get zero vehicle taxation upon scrapping our old combustion vehicle. For instance BYD SEAL Premium (mid version) is at HK$288,800 on scrapping our old combustion car. Otherwise we pay the actual price HK$403,800.
Two levels in UK. But the RWD is the best choice it is more efficient, longer range and actually feels faster than it really is and more fun than AWD dual motor even though the AWD has an 0-60 that twice as fast, but who needs that?
Love this car vs. its rivals for looks, comfort etc, but at group 48 & 50D it's close to double the price when insuring something like an Ioniq 6, Tesla or EV6, and that's against even the EV6 GT which is still only group 45, costs more, is more powerful and is quicker. I REALLY hope this is just a lack of data thing and gets adjusted in time, because today I can't justify spending twice as much to insure a car at my age (50+)
Great review of a great car. But why did you not use the wireless carplay. It's a shame the Li auto range doesn't come here full range is great but the Li auto mega in particular would teach the likes of Tesla a thing or to about charging times
Hi Tish, do you think the BYD Seal Design trim is better than the cheaper Tesla Model? I love the Seal more because it has a drivers display and HUD in the £48,000 Excellence AWD version, hopefully Tesla would take some notes down.
In AU? it was cheaper than Model 3. In Dec. 2023. That's why I have bought it. And no regrets. Happy I did. It is better than Model 3 -- my opinion today. For many reasons. Letdowns? -- it has a few. But mostly a pluses. As happy as Larry! That's how we say it in Aussie. I'm staying with it. No going back to Tesla for me. Greetings. Bye.
Tesla was great but the problem is the charging when it comes to taxi 🚖 sometimes long journeys require a charge and the customer time is ticking however BYD o heard it’s better to charge like 20 minutes 80 percent charge
I have just test drove this! its eveything a model 3 needs to be and better built, matching paintwork, no rattles. Its excellent. The interior is a bit busy. However, its a serious contender for my next car. Its got one huge upgade over my current Tesla model 3...... no Elon.
I test drove the new Model 3 and the Seal. The automation in the Tesla is worlds ahead of BYD, as is the charging. Apart from those two aspects, the BYD Seal is a better car in every way I could find. I bought the Performance (Excellence) and I am so so happy. It effortlessly makes ICE cars look ridiculous.
I agree about the screen a smaller screen would fit in Portrait better like the one in the Polestar 2. Blame TESLA they started the war of the screens and many Chinese brands are way more screens mad than BYD.
Did I understood it right that the car don't support Android Auto? Or just wireless Android Auto and you need a cable to activate? Nice Greetings from Germany ☺️
I’m going to pin this comment; according to some comments it’s had some software updates. I’m going to check in with BYD to check exactly what it gets and which is wired or wireless.
You could operate Android Auto wirelessly or wired and you most likely need to use a cable the first time to initialise, after that it is available wirelessly.

Very good refiew!
Glad you think so!
I would get the BYD Seal 4 wheel drive version.
There is android auto AND. It's wireless where apple car play is wired
apple car is now wireless after their newest update
And here in HK, Government is promoting for all EV brands "ONE FOR ONE" policy. We will get zero vehicle taxation upon scrapping our old combustion vehicle. For instance BYD SEAL Premium (mid version) is at HK$288,800 on scrapping our old combustion car.
Otherwise we pay the actual price HK$403,800.
Anybody know where the paint colour code is situated ?
I'm surprised she didn't mention the drivers display. What an innovation putting the speedo in front of the driver.
You need a usb dongle that gives you wireless airplay. With a dongle every car has wireless CarPlay.
Cute dog!
its wireless AA and Apple here in Aus after the software update got Apple onboard.
I’d love to know what the Over the Air updates are like. That is the real Tesla advantage to me as the car improves over time.
They improved the AWD via the OTA for example on the seal. And the DC charging so yes they do updates.
@@UgglemannenFTW thanks. It’s game changing really.
Not many people have not driven Tesla, BYD is good for them. Low cost means a lot more than neck to neck performance comparisons.
In AU? it was cheaper than Model 3. In Dec. Greetings. Bye.
Tesla was great but the problem is the charging when it comes to taxi 🚖 sometimes long journeys require a charge and the customer time is ticking however BYD o heard it’s better to charge like 20 minutes 80 percent charge
that hybrid qin with 2100km range and 14000$(probably in china.only) could be best deal
has Android Auto. CarPlay is wired and Android Auto is wireless. Have a Performance 3.8s
I think a few things came in an update recently including wireless CarPlay according to some people
really enjoy watching your reviews on cars tiah keep up the great work
Lovely looking car but hearing reports that the software updates in the EU are sporadic at best.
Tish, where is the service for these cars? You don't mention that.
Surprisingly just along the road from where I work in Southampton. They are doing Polestar as well.
I have just test drove this! its eveything a model 3 needs to be and better built, matching paintwork, no rattles. Its excellent. The interior is a bit busy. However, its a serious contender for my next car. Its got one huge upgade over my current Tesla model 3...... no Elon.
Byd’s latest Qin hybrid has a measured range of more than 2,400 kilometers, and the price in the Chinese market is only US$14,000
2,400 km in chinese measurements means roughly 1800 WLTP.
Which translates to ~1300 km range in realusage.
@@IlanuilBYD claims more than 2,000KM, but some reviewers test it in the real life and found it can easily reach 2,400KM.
@@jiehunter If that is true, that's actually amazing!
@@Ilanuilthere are some videos in youtube, you can find them easily.
It do have Android Auto (Wireless) and ACP (USB only).
@@AutoSocialUK Thanks for your answer and work. Hopefully BYD gives you the informations 😊
It does have wireless Android auto. I use it in my Seal.
You could operate Android Auto wirelessly or wired and you most likely need to use a cable the first time to initialise, after that it is available wirelessly.
@@UgglemannenFTW Wow, thank you for the information 🙏
prices @ AU are £30000 and £35000
Can Tish do a review without saying ‘premium’?
No I can’t 😅 especially when something feels premium 😂
The thing is Tish is that you use premium so often on so many reviews it becomes meaningless.
You should hear her "However "!🤣💘@@jce-mp7kv
@@jce-mp7kvperhaps you could suggest some alternatives from your personal thesaurus?🧐
@richgl31 perhaps just don’t use the word so often to the point of irrelevance?
I'd like an EV that's not an IoT appliance tbh
Very nice car, Just wonder what it costs in it's home market? Protectionism rules in the UK.
27k pounds top spec, 20.5 base spec. They have the hybrid seal 06 , 14k us dollars 2000 km range 😂😆
You pay minimal tax on a leased EV in the U.K.
did she say BYD seal not as good as Tesla M3?
Unfortunately all Chinese cars are going to be tariffed out of the EU. We will just end up with local rubbish - and rubbish it really is. Lucky UK, you got out of the EU. Great move.
Is it better than a Polestar 2?
Now that I’m not sure of… I love the Polestar! It’s all personal taste
I find it's always best if the paint and wheels are included with your new car!!!!! Especially on a car that in five years time won't be worth a carrot!
You totally know what I mean, different paint colours other than solid white and nice looking wheels are all included
@@AutoSocialUK But it did sound funny when you said it included the wheels 🙂 However, I was surprised to see VW ID 3s with steel wheels and those plastic wheel covers like you got on a base model 1980s Nissan.
Test drive it. Just test drive it.
Where's the dealership support... maintenance, new parts ordering, warranty issues, etc.... ??? That has to be in place first surely
In Aus they have done a deal with one of the large car service chains. They are everywhere.
amazing
