BYD hit the headlines recently as it overtook Tesla for the most electric cars sold in Q4 2023. The question is, which of these EV manufacturers makes the best electric saloon - Tesla with the Model 3, or BYD with the Seal?
Well for starters, let’s check out the design. This may be the new Tesla Model 3, but it hasn’t changed a whole lot since the previous edition. There’s a new front & rear bumper, along with a few minor design tweaks, but otherwise, the car looks pretty similar at the front and the rear. Along the side, the car is pretty much identical, apart from a set of new alloy wheel designs!
The BYD is also pretty tidy, although we are getting a few Tesla vibes from the design. Creases along the side help it stand out, and there are some pretty smart fins at the bottom of the rear doors. Otherwise, though, both cars are fairly similar when it comes to their look and design.
Take a step inside, and you’ll find more of the same! Both cars come with a huge 15-inch screen stuck to the middle of the dash, and these are used to control pretty much all the features in either car! However, there are a few features that differentiate the BYD from the Tesla. Not only does it have a normal drive mode selector, but it also comes with traditional indicator stalks! In the Tesla, you have to select drive mode through the screen, and you need to indicate with buttons on the steering wheel.
The BYD is also the only car out of the two to come with both a digital dial and a heads-up display. Everything in the Tesla is housed in the infotainment screen.
When it comes to the price, the two are once again pretty evenly matched. The single motor editions of the Tesla and BYD start at around £40,000 and £45,000 respectively, but when you look at the dual motor editions, expect to spend around £50,000 for the Tesla, and just under £49,000 for the BYD!
So will the Tesla reign supreme? Or will Mat prefer the BYD? You’ll need to watch the video to find out for yourself!

@@vjhushashi what??? BYD is the world leading producer of rechargeable batteries. They are the innovator of blade batteries which has much higher energy density and safer than previous batteries. Even Tesla, Toyota and other EVs started using blade batteries supplied by BYD. Whether u like it or not China is moving fast and is rapidly coming to its own technological innovations and ideas..Now even their phones from copying apple have started to have their own designs. Their government is obsessed with havintg the latest cutting edge technology by incentivising young engineers to compete in robot fighting tournaments, events and what not. And the government even at the local level are always ready to finance struggling companies if they think they have potential. The BYD seal costs < 30k pounds in China. The single motor version costs about 24k pounds, taxes and fees included. Ultimately I think the EVs in EU are still not that affordable.
yes let them ship EVs to europe without taxes and see every single European car manufacturers go bankrupt in 5 years! lol the whole EU is a lot cause when it comes to manufacturing
The up front cost is likely not affordable for a lot of people, but they are much more affordable than ICE cars in the long run. I did a cost analysis of my tesla model 3 vs a ford focus and over 9 years the tesla was far cheaper despite costing a lot more up front.
@@Kewickviperthe difference is that works for people who can afford brand new petrol cars, but a lot of people have 5-10 year old petrol cars which are wayyyy cheaper
Yeah, also a Big Mac is like 3 dollars in china, compared to an average of 6 dollars in the euro zone... It's how our economies works.
True but it’s a bit different for cars. Actually, e.g iPhone costs about the same price. And cars in China used to cost much more when China was not able to produce competitive cars. Now the China wages increase but cars prices decreased dramatically
BYD seal just launch in Malaysia, the Premium version ( extended range ) is even cheaper than Tesla Model 3 standard version. And comes with 19 inch rim as standard. And BYD seam more of a complete car than Tesla model 3. I just not use to no stalk at all for Tesla.

Yeah the interior posterior it's a win for byd
Exactly. White vinyl doesn’t cost any more than black vinyl. They have no sense of style at Tesla, the same colors forever and then they add two more, a grey and a red that look almost identical to other colors they already have. Tesla’s are so boring.
I understand Tesla wants simplicity. But a heads up display would be a great option to offer.
Tesla wants cost cutting. That's why you get physical nothing inside. A HUD is an expensive add-on.
@@patriotbarrowokay but couldn’t it be offered as an option? I’m sure a lot of people would buy it as an add-on.
@@goodmoviesrl5089Their whole manufacturing is set up to avoid lots of different SKUs and options. Adding HUD would add more cost than you might think given their processes. But they really need to bring back indicator stalks!
@@goodmoviesrl5089 Thing is Tesla is still selling the M3 in the millions, so why would they add something that costs them? If demand ever slackens (though frankly I think it's telling that pretty much everyone has given up the ghost on that ever happening and stopped predicting it, there genuingly seems to be limitless demand for any Tesla product annoyingly enough) and Tesla's research indicated adding one would bring a load of new customers to buy a 3, then sure I could see them do it, but we're probably a looooooong ways off from them feeling any need to do so.
@@patriotbarrow yes. That’s why it would be an option.
I hate the trend of exchanging physical controls for touch screens or gestures or something. And I will resist it as best I can.
Most actual car manufacturers are changing back to physical for important stuff and leaving the touch for entertainment.
That doesn't feel or pleasure while we driving it gives us driving a golf club car with great speed on the road 😁
Your kind will extinct, like dinosaurs 😂😂😂. In the era of AI, we no longer drive a car, we just sit on moving thing to go to another place, as simply as that

I’m really impressed with that BYD.
Ummm, when he was doing the test drive and he said the Tesla handled better, but when he was driving the Tesla, the road was dry and when he was driving the BYD it was raining and wet. How can you compare?
This is also why I dont watch this channel to draw actual comparisons. Its because Matt becomes very baised between many brands including brands belonging to the same parent company and country.
Because he's a Musk simp.

Carwow will help tesla on review.. ? You don't know tesla famous for not willing to advertise? I could say byd paid carwow to make their car review better.
That swiping when you are parking is just stupid :D
as I understand it depends a bit how you park your car, when "Auto shift from Park" is activated, the Model 3 is designed to automatically select drive mode or reverse mode. That is, if there is a wall, for example, in front of your car, the car will automatically drive back when you step on the accelerator and vice versa when you have an obstacle behind.
The touch screen will show the selected driving mode when the driver's door is closed and the seat belt is fastened. A friend told me about it.
There is a gear selector on the roof near the hazard light button, slighty above the rear mirror

Some white boy don't like Chinese brand, apparently!
24:30 - 24:40 - the road is very wet while driving the Tesla. Might not have been raining from the sky but the road was wet.
I always wonder why Carwow never talk about charging costs. public charging is so expensive in the UK (Around 85P per KWH) - tesla superchargers cost around 45P Per KWH - this is a massive consideration for any potential EV buyer but never gets a mention
Basically all Tesla chargers are now open for non Tesla vehicles in UK and Europe, for 10 bucks a month you also pay the cheapest price. We only charge at them with our Kia 😊
The majority of owners charge at home which is often less than 20p per kWh
I don’t know if its an app bug, but just recently Tesla increased their prices and has opened most of their superchargers across Europe to everyone. It’s not exclusive anymore
@@Pouimatiomthat’s factually incorrect. Only several sites are open to non-Tesla vehicles in the UK. And the cost of doing so is more expensive than a Tesla driver pays.
Cuz they have to put electric woke agenda how they are green and all the positives 😂
To answer your question about adjusting the regen braking in the previous version of the Model 3; the previous Model 3 Performance version allows you to adjust the front rear power balance, reduce/remove the effect of the stability control and adjust the regen braking effect down as low as you want in its "Track Mode". This mode was only available in the Performance version but it allows you to make the car rotate in a very controlled manner (a bit like a well sorted BMW M car).
As you hinted at in the video, the only electric cars that are a practical proposition for long journeys in the UK (or elsewhere?) are the Teslas, for the simple reason that the Tesla Supercharger network is large and well distributed, with many chargers (8-16) at each location, whereas the public network is patchy and you're lucky to find a couple of working charge points at each location.
I've recently driven both these cars and I totally disagree with this review.
Yes the Tesla probably does have better ultimate handling although on the road the difference is very small. The big advantage the Seal has is that has a vastly superior and more comforatble ride quality and it pushes the Tesla close for handling- certainly on the road and not on a track. The next massive diffeence betwen the cars is that of the finish and build quality. The Seal is streets ahead -yes Tesla have improved from a low level but my demonstrator still had average panel gaps and paint finish whilst the Seal was superbly finished and felt much more solid. Another thing to consider is that the Seal uses the latest Lithium Iron Phosphate battery technology which is MUCH more rugged and durable that those of the Tesla.
Finally price - unlike most of the motoring reviewers I live the North of England where strangely four-wheel-drive is a real positive in poor road conditions and RWD is a total liability. Hence if you compare these versions and you don't want white paint or 18" wheels the Tesla is almost £4000 more expensive with less kit.
Its a no-brainer the Seal wins by a mile
Agreed, the removal of stalks is the dumbest decision by Tesla in a long time.....right up there with forcing the YOKE on fools.
How do you feel about Lambhorghini and Ferrari removing them years ago? Yoke is not forced, it is an optional change.

BYD is much better for the one who drove other brand‘s car before. In many ways, BYD seal basically is same as a oil car. Tesla is innovative, maybe too innovative. Old drivers don’t want to change the way to drive. BYD is easier to get used to. However, you need to spend time to learn how to use Tesla.
The BYD isn't supposed to cost that much. It is far cheaper in Asia, which is why it has been so popular recently.
In Europe, European cars are cheaper but Asian cars are more expensive. It's the same vice vera.
Export and import fees
Import tariff
in INdonesia it cost only 50k USD the fastest one 3.8s
It is cheaper because they aare supported by the Chinese government. Soon every major market would wake up to that reality and start putting tariffs on the Chinese as China wants to dominate and thus they undercut the competition.
@@Undisputed_King That's only a minor part as BYD makes something like ~10x the profit per car in Europe compared to in China. The real reason is that BYD is capacity constrained, not just in manufacturing, but in distribution, sales, support, etc. in Europe right now. If they sold them with a similar profit margin as cars in China, there would be a year-long backlog of orders.
Great comparison! Just an idea: please consider to put on screen the ranges in kilometers whenever you mention "freedom units". Your videos are viewed all over the world, and most of us use the international system. That would be awesome!

It's not very hard to do conversions
The BYD Seal has just landed on Indonesian shores this week and it already beat Tesla due to several factors:
• Factory support - BYD is fully factory-supported and partnered with a well-known dealership network. On the other hand, Tesla doesn't have full factory support over here since it's sold through a general importer.
• Established reputation - Prior to selling passenger cars in Indonesia, BYD won procurement contracts for taxicabs and low-deck city buses. The buses have decent quality and excellent performance.

@@Mathis218337 That's the magic, In alot of asian countries, BYD already won without even selling. If people are buying electric cars, they go after BYD without a thought. Most people think , its just cheaper, built better, faster speed, better service. There is no competition at this point.

For the Seal, you can turn off stability control by swiping down from the top right and pressing the "ESC off" button.
Thats quite complex to do in the BYD SEAL.
In a 'normal' car there's usually a dedicated ESC button. Car makers need to move away from putting everything on a touch screen before it kills someone, if it hasn't done already🤬
ya, these people are too lazy to explore.
Even if your phone is in a cradle its illegal to use the touchscreen whilst driving. How is taking your eyes off the road to try and turn the traction control off using the built in touchscreen any different?
yep with that off you can drift and do donuts with the Seal. Really fun to drive.
0:07 thumbs up, just for this *perfect* impersonation of a seal
A point of difference is Byd has V2L which is sought after in rural areas.
The Seal AWD as tested is only £35k in Australia. The 2wd long range version is £5k cheaper (5.8sec) Similarly, the BYD Atto 3 is only £27k. Sales tax is lower than in UK at 10% which contributes to lower prices, but it appears byd still have got room to lower prices in Europe when they are ready!

They did not mention that the difference in weight is due to the type of battery, the byd one is heavier but safer and lasts longer.
The BYD LiFePO4 battery has ~ three times the cycle life of LiNiMnCo battery used in the Tesla and is orders of magnitude safer as far as uncontrolled combustion is concerned.
@@bobsmith3983 Thats a huge benefit and would sway my choice, also the trim on the Tesla is horrible....
@@bobsmith3983 meh, "uncontrolled" combustion on any battery is still orders of magnitude safer than gas. Battery fires develop really slowly.
The Chinese government claim it's safer, which is why BYD is blacklisted in many countries for spontaneously combusting

26:00 - Yes, the original Model 3 offers the stopping modes. They removed it with the refresh. One downside to the Tesla is they'll take features away out of nowhere for "reasons".
Tesla got rid of the Roll and Creep modes after the EPA made changes to how the manufacturer had to calculate range estimates in different modes. Other OEMs will probably follow.

If anyone here actually went to china and looked around any city for literally 1 hour, they'd notice exactly just how many electric cars there are there. It's to the point it feels weird because of how quiet downtown streets are. Doesn't take a genius to know which brand is better, the country with like 10% EV marketshare and where regularly people will still actually deny global warming, or China.
China also banned diesel sales except for trucks and buses, so many EVs and hybrid gazzers not only reduced the noise level but also the smell. When I cross to Macau or Hong Kong, it feels like I'm traveling back in time with the fumes and engine noise 🤣

I drove three Teslas two had the older steering wheel column shifter but the S had the screen style shift... not a good idea and that was such a big deal for me in an otherwise amazing car. The handling on all three was incredible. I am a huge petrol head but have to say thar I was really impressed with all three Tesla's the S model being a monster in drag race mode.
There are physical buttons for the drive selector as well.
The issue I see with the seal is not one that would affect you when you first bought the car or in six months. The issue with the BYD vehicle would be in six years. Tesla has demonstrated that they’re over the air Technology works seamlessly for a decade and that software is a core competency. BYD he still having trouble making regular and effective OTA updates.
As an Indonesian, I think I would choose BYD over Tesla, you can buy BYD Seal here half the price of the basic Tesla model 3. Tesla infrastructure and support is still considered too remote to beat other competitors like Hyundai or Wuling in terms of infrastructure and support (in fact, almost all electric cars I've seen is Hyundai or Wuling because it is cheap especially Wuling here smashed the electric car market). Tesla is still considered as a luxury car though.
so what happens when you need to use the indicator at a roundabout when the wheel is turned 45-60 degrees ???
Yes that is a good test. It would be good for the buttons to be good - in right hand drive vehicles Tesla previously just left the stalks on the wrong side of the steering column. God that does my head in I just hate that so much. With buttons - well they just get programmed differently problem solved.
tbh if your that "far in" with turning the wheel, it should be turned on automatically, if its not already, im sure it will be soon.
OMG What a conundrum! What will you do, when you're in a roundabout and need to use the turn signals! I bet Elon and all of the best engineers in the world (yes, literally) never thought of that!
Move your fucking thumb over an inch/2 cm is what you do. It’s in the same spot on the steering wheel, you get used to it. Good grief why is this such a difficult thing for Brits to stop moaning about?

I find it surprising that you have to manually add charging for the byd. I figured that would have been a standard UI feature.
You have no idea how hard it is to get all that live info. A Tesla even redirects you if a charger is full or it senses to much Tesla are en route or if it just isn’t functioning. Many brands struggle with it.
Yeah, Tesla is still the only one that does this well. Any other manufacturer will depend heavily on the limited Apple car play or Android auto or use some basic charging data with no real time update for road trips.

On the performance model of the BYD, the brakes are (should be) Brembo. Which is a renowned brand of course. Funny they are so grabby. It could maybe get better after some use...(?) The BYD also has a light interior option (blue), which however is quite light. Still, in combination with the 2 blue exterior options it seems to match well.
Here's a suggestion to enhance future comparisons: consider evaluating the sound system. The sound system often gets overlooked in car reviews, which is a significant disappointment. I'm confident that many people prioritize the quality of the sound system when considering potential car purchases.
Especially us who drive 40000+km a year and most of it by ourselves. Also the microphone quality check on calls would be much appreciated. There is a huge difference between mf’s. My Audis and MB’s has had great quality mics but our ‘20 Skoda Superb and our previous VW Passat had subpar quality on that department. So much road noise that they were pretty much useless
Get a job. Loser wow
True. Lately I've seen few instances including high-end cars where branded sound system was just weak or dull. I bought a quad set of Kenwood speakers for my car and the difference is very noticeable. Also few years back I got to drive 2012 X3 that had upgraded sound system, and it also was one of those "oooh there is more background in this song than I heard" moments.
Tesla model 3 sound system is very good. I am an Audiophile that own a 200k system at home. (it can't compare to a 200k system but it very good for car audio.)
I guess when city slickers have their 4 h daily commute, you must want sound system to keep you entertained while stuck in traffic LMAO
15:00 - wtf did the car think you were trying to do? I saw you swipe the “drive selector” to Drive, and it switched back to Reverse with no warning? It did that at 6:50 too
There's a lot of corner cutting in the software for sure. But I think a lot of quality talent is missing in the industry anyway. Taking a CS degree won't educate you on how to make reliable and performance-aware software - at least not if you took it after 1990. Most software is focused on time to market and imagined reusability ("Clean Code™"), in my experience. Tesla's software has some above average software parts but other parts are severely lacking, simply judging from the clock speed of the hardware. I can't speak to QA but they don't have the best rumors. They're mostly focused on impact safety, I've read. It feels like they're cost-cutting and preparing for the future, sacrificing UX in the present.
@@Muskar2 It's not really about the way it's coded- it's a design flaw. There's no room for mistakes or interpretation with a physical switch that discretely selects a specific gear, but with the Model 3the software (and your own senses) have to interpret whether you pulled a virtual lever far enough.
I assume the Seal will have software updates to fix the problems with the touchscreen?
Almost everyone that buys a Model 3 or Y, myself included, gets used to the center screen only configuration and prefers it within a few minutes of first using it. It's actually simpler and less distracting to check speed glancing to the side than through a steering wheel. It's also better to only have one screen, in one direction to avert your eyes from the road occasionally.
@@KhanR1-qm2xi yes and no. They are supposed to work automatically if there is precipitation but that doesn't always happen. If you just want them to work for a couple of seconds you just hit the button on the stalk. When you do that it pulls up the control on the screen to make them stay on if you want them to. You have to glance at the screen for a millisecond to do that. If you're using any form of self driving that should be completely fine. If you're not it should still be no worse than tapping something in Apple Carplay or Android Auto for other cars. You don't have to find it in a menu to turn them on.
@@JosephHowes2003 Ok, thanks.
I genuinely believe telsa could do with taking some advise from its customers, like keeping the stalk, those lights a gimmick but people like so should have been in previous models too, seat covers etc.

They won't listen tho, because Elon wants to cut the costs as much as possible. Any feature that consumers would like would make the car more expensive to produce, so you can be rest assured that they will not do it.
