2023 Nissan Ariya Electric SUV review // This one surprised us!

- This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Nissan Ariya electric SUV/crossover. There are two battery options for the Nissan Ariya EV , a 63 kWh or 87 kWh battery. FWD and e-4orce AWD with short and long range options. Depending on the model you choose you get a range of power between 214 - 389 horsepower and 221 - 442 lb-ft of torque. AWD models with the larger battery offer the most power, up to 389 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. FWD models with the larger battery offer the most range up to 490 km/304 miles.
We are driving the Nissan Ariya Evolve+ FWD model with an 87 kWh battery, 238 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque with up to 465 km/289 miles of range.
Here is a breakdown of some of the other models available, it’s a bit of a spreadsheet.
The Nissan Ariya Engage FWD has a 63 kWh battery, 214 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, 348 km/216 miles of range.
The Nissan Ariya Evolve (Canada) or Engage (US) e-4orce has a 63 kWh battery, 335 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, 330 km/205 miles of range.
The Nissan Ariya Venture+ FWD with a 87 kWh battery, 238 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, 490 km/304 miles of range.
Nissan Ariya Platinum+ and Premier e-4orce both with an 87 kWh battery, 389 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque, 426 km/267 miles of range.
The Nissan Ariya EV offers 7.1” of ground clearance, a drag co-efficient of 0.30 and has a 7.2 kW on-board charger. With a DC Fast charger at speeds up to 130 kW, the Ariya will charge from 10-80% in 35 - 40 minutes depending on the battery size. With a Level 2 charger between 10.5 to 14 hours. The Ariya comes with liquid cooled battery tech, this management system means better performance in hot and cold weather plus more battery protection when using fast chargers.
In Canada, the Nissan Ariya Engage FWD model starts at $52,998, Evolve e-4orce $60,598, Venture+ FWD $59,498, Evolve+ FWD $64,998, Platinum+ e-4orce $69,198, Premier e-4orce $69,998.

Hi Zack and Andrea, finally enjoyed your Ariya review! Lol took you long enough! I am now going on 3 months of happy ownership of the evolve+ in ocean blue/ light grey. Your review was on point! One thing you didn’t mention, which is my fav feature, it the rear view mirror which can switch to camera mode in evolve+ trims and higher. You get a clear view of the whole road behind you and easier on eyes when there’s bright headlights behind you at night. I keep it in camera mode all the time. I completely agree, my first impressions of the exterior in photos was tacky and unappealing, especially the piano black around the tires, but in person it has totally grown on me in all the ways you described, but also want to add that the front grill of the Ariya looks AMAZING at night, with its distinctively shaped headlights, the illuminated Nissan badge, soooo classy looking, in my opinion. I feel so lucky to be driving around town in my beautiful new car. ❤
Future review, and possible Ariya competitor: Volvo EX30?
We quit the Tesla model Y deposit because Ariya reduced price of premium version FWD to USD 36,000 around in China. It's a fantastic car ahead in quality material and battery 89 Kwh.

The owners I talked to like their Ariyas. I don't have one, because as you say they are expensive.
I consider the Leaf to be Japans answer to the German Volks Wagon Beetle, the people's car. Air cooled battery and engine. Keeps the price down. The low trim model was under $20,000 USD. They are good starter EVs. I like mine.
Had this (in dark green) since February. My first EV and i love it. I love that its rare and not a Tesla of couese. I get compliments on it all the time and people asking my questions. I came out the gym at 2am and 2 women were just staring at it (yes i got the digits 😉) another lady followed me into the grocery store to ask me about it lol
Im not even a Nissan fan, actually got this to hold me off until the EV9 comes out because im a Kia guy but i most likely will just keep this, although i want both lol.
Also will add although the charge speed max isnt as fast as kia or tesla, the charge curve is great. Consistently stays in the 120s or at least 1 teens at least most the time. Even after 80% its in the 75-90 range.
After 90% its usually in the 50-60s.
Yea, reviewers tend to not mention its more effective charge curve that kinda balances out the lower peak number., so it's not as big a negative as the 130 number aole suggests.

Good on you guys for calling out the price. It's too expensive in Canada, as are many new EVs. Adoption of EVs will grind to a halt with these prices and the latest interest rates.

I want my foot on the brakes when I am stopped. If I am rear-ended, I won't travel as far with the un-expected shove. Disagree with you about the regeneration brakes. Since taking delivery of my VW ID4, I found that I prefer them as I can bring the car to a nice even stop and get more juice into the battery in the process. By using them on a short trip the other day, I actually got up to 4.5 miles to the killowatt.
In the northern U.S. States and in Canada, would testing E.V.s in January and February be more revealing of battery performance and range? Love the rear wiper which is mysteriously missing on several competitors. An interesting EV but the pricing makes your eyes water.

I get the comment about the price, but let's face it, all EVs are expensive. Until the technology in batteries progresses, EVs will always have some serious downsides. Particularly cost, material composition (scarcity, environmental impact, weight and electrical properties) as well as range/capacity. A $60,000 EV is basically a $30,000 car with a $30,000 battery in it. So in order to get a nice looking car with decent features, you are going to be in the $60,000 plus range. The most expensive part of EVs is the battery, so if they can find a way to get the batteries to improve in terms of material composition, cost and weight, EVs will always remain a compromised vehicle exclusive to the upper income class.
I'm not in the US, but just seen a video saying all Model 3's qualify for the tax rebate, which makes the base car $33k. That is going to push used EV prices down and make them more accessible to lots of buyers
I would say low 40s not $30k. Even a Corolla cross is mid 30s.
@@bill_heywood The Model 3 in Canada starts at $55k. Starts. The longer range AWD model is $65k. While it does qualify for a $5k Federal Tax Rebate, that's still a very expensive car considering what it looks like inside (it looks like a $25k car with a big screen in it). And if you need to give taxpayer money away for people to buy cars, your business model is flawed. If you can afford to buy a $65k EV, you shouldn't be getting $5k in taxpayer money to pay for it. That's not what our money is supposed to be used for.
@@jeffer1101 $55k CAD is £33k which would make the Model 3 a bargain in the UK where we have zero EV purchase subsidies. The cheapest Model 3 is £42,990 which is $71,633 CAD. If you get $5k off the purchase price then that makes a Model 3 £30k which would be one of the cheapest EVs in the UK. If they cost that here they would be selling like hotcakes. I paid more than that for an MG4. So count your blessings

Love it but just a pipe dream for people of modest means like me. I really would rather go electric so I wouldn't be a hypocrite on the environment. One engineer told me if so many people wouldn't be obsessed over range, they would be able to make more of the battery technology available to produce reasonably priced vehicles. Why are so many people so concerned about 300+ mile ranges when far over 99% of private auto trips are less than 1/4 of that?
I drove this when it came out, I was not a huge fan of them removing the e-pedal feature from the lineup. The Mach-E has been my favorite so far, you get used to having the one pedal driving and then they take it away, and I almost crashed the Ariya because I had no idea they took that away. I wish I could the gold exterior paint, I love that!
Are these only available in copper color, because I have been only seeing this for over a year now.
Funny, that you mention Infinti because I was thinking about them. I'm subscribed to some auto reviews and I can't remember the last time one of them reviewed an Infiniti or a Buick, and I see their commercials. Is it because they are not popular or don't really have a compelling car, or just they don't push their cars out like that?

Had a Nissan Leaf for 9.5 years now and seriously considering this one. Nissan offer 3 levels of trim in Norway for this with a substantial difference between the cheapest and the most expensive ($10.000 different here in Norway). That is a lot of money for the extra bells and whistles, but those are also perhaps what brings out the best of this car too. If only the heads up display was on the Advance trim level I'd likely go with that.
Btw, I checked and saw that HUD is actually an option but only together with a full Bose sound system and together they cost so much that you are very close to the top trim called Evolve, and one might as well get the full package then.
One thing that wasn't discussed in QC&C is the touch sensitive buttons IN WINTER.... I mean, with gloves on. Did you guys test?
No, we didn't test them with gloves, I am sure they would be just fine.

My biggest complaint: half the trunk space of my Rogue! Hard to consider this a viable alternative for families.
Thanks for the detailed review i went to nissan i like the car but for your information the warranty on the battery is 8 years unlimited mileage it's big plus you missed mentioning . I don't any other car company offering this kind of warranty they mostly offer 160k . And to me it was the biggest issue that holds me from buying electric car because charging the battery it goes over 20k in most cars. I don't know if you can confirm the warranty to us
The elephant in the room is always delivery time. I was just quoted “several years” for an Ioniq 5.

Is it just me, is that a smart design on the steering wheel? Short on the bottom so you can see the instrument/screen. And its a wheel.
This is a nice EV but can you get one. The problem is the dealerships don't have one to test drive and the wait list is long. I was told it would take 2-3 years to obtain a Hyundai Ioniq 5

In the US it is hard to recommend due to all the Japanese parts which meant no tax credits. In Canada the pricing is still steeper than the ID.4 and Ioniq 5, but it does undercut its major rival - the Model Y LR AWD which is priced at ~$71k CAD, meaning a loaded Ariya Premier e-4Force just undercuts it at $69k CAD and it still gets the $5k iZEV federal rebates.
I personally prefer the flush/hidden door handles. True story: neighbor sent me a video of someone trying out door handles in the neighborhood looking for unlocked vehicles. The person passed by our vehicles after trying to look for a handle for a few minutes. We have an Ioniq5 and MachE.

I bought an EV version of the VW Golf 5 years ago and it cost me $28K (US) after the tax credits. At that time, you had a few EV options that were reasonably priced, although the range wasn't where most people wanted it to be and they weren't as racecar-fast. Now every EV that comes out seems to cost almost twice as much as what I paid. While it's great that we're getting more range, Zack isn't kidding when he says that these are not priced for most people. I have no idea how automakers think that they're going to phase out ICE vehicles if their replacements are all going to be priced like this. As for me, I intend to keep my little Golf for a very long time since it's resale value is nonexistent and it's serving my daily needs very well.
EV prices are driven by battery prices. And, there's still a lot of room for them to go down. Battery prices went down 90% between 2010 and 2020. There was a bump up during the recent supply chain issues when lithium and other material prices spiked, but they appear to have resumed their downward trend, with lithium prices way down from their peak. Part of that is helped by the trend toward cheaper chemistries such as LFP, which doesn't use any nickel or cobalt. Longer term, there could be a trend toward sodium batteries, which don't use lithium, so serve to keep a cap on lithium prices.

Politicians are mandating this, without any idea where the power is going to come from and the cost to beef up the grid. It’s not going to happen by 2030 or 2035 or 2040……politicians like to stay in power, so it’s going to get kicked down the road.

I drove one a couple of months ago. It still has a go cart type feel when it takes off as opposed to something like the Tesla but overall was a nice vehicle.
Does it have over the air updates via wifi owners can do at home? (other brands use the same wording ex. Chevy/VW but you still physically have to take the car into the dealership which is a huge deterrent).

The seats will be comfortable on a long road trip...yeah that "long road trip" will be extra long when you stop 50 times to recharge. So a loaded 2023 Nissan Rogue Platinum comes in at a MSRP of $47,000 cdn in my neck of the woods. If you are a decent negotiator you'll get it for less than that. But let's assume you pay $47,000. A Platinum e-4force comes in at $69,000. $22,000 more than its similarly equipped cousin. Other than the fact that $22,000 buys a lot of gas, I don't have to worry about recharging it 50 times on a long road trip. I don't have to worry about replacing the batteries every 8 years (at a huge cost), significantly reduced battery life in cold weather, and I can take it to any local mechanic, who will be more than comfortable repairing the Rogue. But hey...if you have money to blow, go for it. BTW -the Rogue has had a rear wiper blade for many years now....lol

This really should have gotten an 11 kW onboard charger. And the lack of One-Pedal driving, as a previous EV owner, is a non-starter for me. I would not get it unless they added and update to allow this. There should be an option in the menus to configure this. I'm surprised you didn't mention one oddity that other reviewers have mentioned... the way in which the brake pedal moves away from the driver (presumably based on regen). That is a design mistake in my view. The pedal should always be where you expect it to be.
I still have range anxieties, and the price needs to come down a little bit more. I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger on one yet.
I had a chance to try Nissan Ariya, VW ID4 and hyundai ioniq.
It's not even close - Nissan Arya far ahead!
but the thing that I love the most - Nissan was doing next generation of the comftable cool car that happens to be EV.
Ioniq for example is way too match "from future" that usability is pure pain.
I went to test drive this when the AWD version came out. I couldn’t because the 12 V battery was dead. I forgot about it and about 2 weeks later the salesman calls to say they finally fixed the battery. Not encouraging.
How come you didnt add the clear competitor that starts at 59k? EV6 and Ioniq5 are more of a Sedan than SUV. What about Volvo/Tesla?

Smart exterior and nice interior. However, the interior looked like a sea of grey on video. More color accents would spice up the interior to make it look more premium.

All these EVs should switch to NACS (tesla) charging port standards in North America, like Ford and GM just did. Non-tesla charging infrastructure is non-reliable, so NACS would likely become the de-facto standard in NA. Once they switch they will become much more desirable to buy
Sold my EV and going back to a gasser or hybrid for now. There’s too many changes recently (i.e. adopting NACS) and updates to battery technology. I did my part as a beta tester for new tech.
My neighbour sold his Taycan and bought a Panamera…..he said he didn’t want to plan his drives based on charging.

Greetings from oakville Ontario the drawback of having an ev is here where I live apartment buildings don't offer charge stations otherwise you have to go where in the area and charge in public parking lots and juice up, do you both have a charger at your house
On an economic and convenience level I don’t think an EV is right for anyone living somewhere where they can’t charge. If you really love EV’s or if you think it’s helping the environment, then maybe. I charge at home and I have solar panels, so I think I’m in the sweet spot.
Hopefully, that will change. I know someone who lives in a high-rise condo, and their building got EV charging installed. It might be easier for buildings with underground parking since power is often more readily available.

I test drove this car. The POI system tells you where all the gas stations are, but not the chargers, so yeah the software still needs work…
If that was the case it was not activated in NissanConnect yet.
Considering how long the Leaf has been out, Nisssn should have done more in EV's by now. Maybe because they ran CEO Ghosn out of town.

ABS will never engage when using one-pedal driving. In winter, using excess regen is not recommended. I drive my Ioniq 5 EV the same as any other vehicle. Besides, passengers will hate it when you use one-pedal driving. The Ariya was delayed by one year due to the pandemic, it's technology is slightly behind now and you shouldn't pay a premium price for the "older" tech. Negotiate with the sales rep and don't pay above MSRP. There are better EVs out there.
Interesting question on how manufacturers are going to be able to differentiate EVs from one manufacturer to the rest...I have been wondering about this myself. I imagine buying a car will be more like buying furniture or home appliances...just way more expensive!
Tesla does a great job of this! Superior range, performance, charging network, entertainment & tech, and full self driving. I’m so confused as to why anyone buys a VW, Nissan or a Toyota EV when Tesla has such a superior product at the same price points.
@@mikemcg1808 Personally I think Teslas look like suppositories. I also don't like the screen-only driver interaction, or the fact that they sit lower to the ground than actual SUV EVs (none of which were shown here, look at Volvo electric SUVs to see what I mean).
I get those things are what Tesla values, and the lower ground clearance provides more range. But I don't value the same thing, so I don't want a Tesla 🤷🏾♀️
@@mikemcg1808 IMO Teslas have too much useless crap in them, are way more expensive than most other EVs, and can’t be maintained by the customer in the slightest. You don’t need a car with a massive flat-screen TV for a radio head unit that you can play games on, or an autopilot system that crashes into everything under the sun. It seems like because of Tesla throwing all that crap in there, everyone else is doing it now. Next thing you know, Elon’s gonna slap a gucci smart toilet into the car as a standard feature and charge an extra 10 grand on the MSRP lol
The estep is horrible. Why didn't Nissan give you regen setting with a complete stop option? Hope they address it at some point with software updates... also not sure whether or not they suppor OTA updates a la Tesla!
It works better than the Leaf. Use the auto-hold funktion for stopping completely. Mine has received OTA updates, no silly sounds and such though.
I wanted this car until l got in one. I'm only 6 feet but the car was too small to drive safely. The seat could not go back far enough or low enough. Also difficult to get my head in the car.
You must be seriously special built. I am 5.9 and sit great.

Have you guys had issues with yours? It seems like there's a few complaints of power loss/ software updates. We're planning to buy one soon
We have to bring ours in next week for the recall but we did not notice any problems with it at all. We even went on a few longer trips and had no problem with it.@@Lexlugr
Very attractive vehicle. But being a Nissan and having poor historical resale value, you may want to Lease. Nissan has had lovely designs in recent years.

Oh yes been waiting for this review on this first EV by Nissan. Definitely an expensive middle upper class trinket and play thing!
They had the LEAF previously
This is their first electric SUV but Nissan has been building the Leaf for a long time. It's pricey especially on the top two trims for sure but it offers a beautiful interior for a non-luxury brand.
And sold more than 500,000 leafs. Before Tesla had the model 3 in 2018. It was out in 2010 as a 2011 model. Model s 2012 super charger network 6 locations on east and west coast sept 2012.
They say pricy but reviews always get the top trim or close in the evolve. The engage trim is 43,000 US dollars. Kyle Connor on youtube whined like a 6 year old in a 30 year body about the cost but doesn’t mention the base trim like Alex on autos.
@Mark Fitzpatrick The lower trim pricing is very competitive, it's just the top two trims that are pricey especially in Canada.
EV's just don't seem to be where we need them to be yet, having a hybrid might be a better option for some people and I work in a Nissan Dealer 😂Nissan made a beautiful SUV but that price point is definitely not for us regular folk!
I don't see the point of premium brands anymore. Mainstream brands do an excellent job with their interiors nowadays.
I have had 3 nissan leaf vehicles. The reason I dont like this car is because I love the E peddle. I seldom use the brakes.

I like the interior………not a big fan of exterior styling. I know it’s done mostly for aerodynamics………but I’m not loving the look. Too swoopy for me.
The 2wd model costs 5k+pdi more than model y, if I understood the pricing right. I know this is much fancier and model y but supercharging network and software updates truly create a luxury experience.
"Let's make it a Nissan brand coz we'll charge a lot more when we can Infinity." I love the hidden door handles on EVs so the Ariya is a step backwards. I hate the 2 sharks fin antennae, looks like the underside of a surfboard. Not a fan of the touch button either. I love the front though- looks cool.

They’d do better just upgrading the rogue to a hybrid and giving it a similar interior. The rogue is fine the way it is, but that front end needs to change.
Thé price of ev should be for the blue collar family. Almost all ev’s start at $55k plus Canadian. Other countries can make it cheaper.
Beautiful car but with the current prices of model Y you could get one for the same price/cheaper than a loaded Arya and still have more fun In my opinion. But if you wanna standout from the MANY teslas on the road…

@@jamespaul2587 I don't see the appeal in Tesla. It's like a moving stark workplace. The ride comfort isn't good in the Y. It can get noisy on certain roads where other cars aren't. There's a lot of space in it but it's not a premium feeling car.
@Benjamin Smith agreed, the tech and performance and efficiency in Teslas is leading edge however their exterior styling and plain interiors turn many away from the brand. It's great to see more variety finally coming to market

Affordable EVs seems to be a distant future still. Another nice EV priced for the near wealthy. My family loves the idea of EV but we are now compromising with looking at some Hybrids.
Only if they allow the chinese automaker to import into the US, then you see a 40% reduction that becuase the chinese produce battery much cheaper. the toyota Bz4x selling in US for $45k, but same suv sell for $25K in CHina. The Ariya sell for $36K in china. Of course that may put US automaker out of business.
I think I may buy an electric car in 2030 when they're finally on par with gas cars.
Or just get a Tesla now. Already far superior to gas cars.

Yes, that seemed like an oversight. The Model Y seems like more of a direct competitor than the EV 6. Maybe they figured everyone knows about it already as it’s the top seller. 🤷♂️
I think the y is a competitor but not as close a competitor as the models mentioned. Great drive train in the Y but less competitive everywhere else.
