Supposedly, Tommy, Ariya has capacitive-touch steering wheel, so that no “torque input” is necessary for Pro Pilot to know your hands are on the wheel. Did you read up on that before road testing?
I looked at the Ariya and the Ionic 5 and chose the Ariya because I loved the interior and how quiet it was. To me it was more fun to drive than the Ionic 5 as well. When I bought it, I got a $3750 rebate through Nissan Finance with a 2.99% 3 year loan which I can pay off as soon as I want. So it felt like a good deal at that price. Hopefully Nissan will bring production to the U.S. to get the ta rebate at some point. If it helps, my use case is in-town commuting. We drive my wife's larger 3-row any time we travel.
The Pro-Pilot 2.0 equipped vehicles have a Torque sensor AND a pressure sensor on the wheel. Instead of just touching the wheel you need to give it a squeeze.
The changing tax incentives have made this market segment very interesting. I’m not sure it’ll last, but for now, it’s the Wild West in terms of range/performance/price. I love the way the Ariya looks inside and out, but you’re right: at $62k that’s a tough pill to swallow. Excellent thorough review! Love seeing this in depth information on the current crop of mainstream EVs.
Not sure what issue you were having with the steering wheel but I've used the ProPilot on my Ariya Premiere practically every day since I got the car 3 months ago and never had any issue with it sensing my hand on the wheel or had to use much force. Usually it's enough for me to keep one hand resting on the bottom of the wheel around the 5 or 7 o'clock position. I think ProPilot 2.0 works great except for the fact that there seem to be too many gaps in coverage for the HD map data so it's stuck in ProPilot 1 level assist most of the time instead of the full suite.
Weren't Ariyas recalled for steering wheel issues? Perhaps this press car wasn't fixed correctly and there is an issue with the way the wheel is adjusted.
I think the wheel doesn't need torque and has sensors to sense hands on the wheel. Just holding the wheel with enough flesh touching should be fine so wiggling the wheel isn't doing anything.
Interesting video, as usual, However, I notice that the audio varied in its loudness in the different sections of the video; initially not very loud, then loud, then not loud again. I had to change my loudness setting accordingly, which was somewhat annoying. (I am sensitive to loudness because I have a hearing deficiency.) I suggest trying to keep the loudness constant, if possible.
While it’s not Loveland Pass, we just drove our Ioniq5 (AWD) from Montrose to Telluride/Mountain Village and back (148 miles) and averaged 4.5 miles per kWh. Overall the slower speeds on mountain roads seem to offset the higher energy use when hill climbing. At least compared to driving at Interstate highway speeds.
I had the same issue in my 21 Nissan Altima. I barely use the adaptive cruise control. I am currently leasing the 24 Nissan Ariya. So far so good no real long road trip as of yet.
going forward please base your first stage 1 on kwh left not indicated 20% range, as 20% of a bigger battery has significantly more charge than a smaller sub 65kwh pack
Going further with that logic, wouldn't it be better just to state the range that's left, since there are significant differences in efficiency between models?

Our Ariya (Evolve) was $41,000 out the door; the dealership gave us $7,500 factory rebate and $12,000 for my 2019 Altima. We had it a year and love it more now then when we bought it. It came with an all inclusive 8 year warranty (battery included). On a full charge we get about 420 miles (winter) and 330 (summer).
Charging: 63.3655 kW in 34 min = avg charging rate of 111.7 kW/hr for the 7->80% SOC session. Must have a pretty flat charging curve since 127 was the fastest charge rate early on. Very nice. 3.4 miles / kW seems like decent efficiency for the very tall Ariya driving in the mountains. Usually hill work gives worse efficiency than flat highway driving so 3.4 also seems quite good. Thank you for the look at performance of the Ariya Tommy and Alex!!
Well, you get what you pay for. That interior, those features, they come at a price. Those are very good offers. The range is rated as 304 miles by EPA. I wish some TH-cam channels would range test the long range version at 70 mph.

You just ignored them. Don’t get me wrong, I want combustion engines to be around forever for weekend fun and for when they make sense for hauling and for range. Electrics won’t solve everything, but carbon emissions must be reduced for your future children and grandchildren!
Why is it difficult for car manufacturers getting over 300 mile range (with AWD included with that range) in their vehicles when asking for price around $50-60k
Nice. I didn't know what car you were talking about for a minute, because the plethora of trim names on the Ariya are just next-level stupid. I hope Nissan starts passing on the tax credit via the leasing loophole for the rest of us.
A lot of testers seem to miss that preorders get the tax credit. And oddly that the vehicle is 20k less on base trim/range. Not sure that having a bevy of choices is a detriment.
With Tesla’s new prices and the $7500 rebate, the Model Y blows this away just on price. As a MY owner (and a Leaf owner, so some experience with Nissan EVs) I would not recommend this to anyone.
Some Nissan enthusiasts will buy Ariya anyways since despite being late to the market and premium price it is a very sporty SUV but with adapting supple suspension and a not so bad charging curve. It is hard to ask that money for a Nissan but EVs are expensive anyways. The design of rear is not my cup of tea but lots of people will like it and embrace it: it’s the best Japanese EV on the market for now considering another Japanese EV Toyota BZX and its Subaru counterpart. Everybody compares it to Tesla Model Y. Yes Tesla is the best EV on North American market but it seems to me it is the worst car ever made thus I will never buy a very cool iPad with very cool software with a mediocre car shape glider attached to it called Tesla.
There’s no such thing as a $7500 rebate…it’s a tax credit. Not the same thing. Most will not qualify for the full tax credit (it all depends on how much you make and how much income tax you pay).
@@vg3430 I would personally expect most new car buyers to qualify. I would be interested to see the stats on the people that couldn't. Is a single person making under $48k or so really going to be in the market for a $45k car, for example? Or, how many married couples actually make over $300k? Maybe if they're both doctors or lawyers?
It's 32 minutes from 10%-80%. ID.4 (2023 w/ SK ON battery) does this in 29 minutes, Tesla Model Y does it in about 26 minutes. So not a massive difference despite the large difference in peak charging speeds. Peak definitely way more important.
This would be good if you charge at home. 300 miles should at least be the sweet spot for commuters in snowy areas. Have some buffer of range while it’s cold out. Too expensive for the range.
Thought I’d seen that ARIYA uses capacitive touch-detection on the steering wheel? Does it change how many hands or position required for different road types?
The most demanding test ever done with an EV Ariya was when Chris and Julie Ramsey drove their Ariya from the North Pole to the South Pole. Absolutely no issues with the car. Not even an ICE bucket can make that claim. Everything was stock except for adding large wheels to deal with the terain. .
Nobody mentions the charging port location. This is the least convenient location of any EV. Think about it. Left fender, front, driver's side rear, even passenger side rear is better.
If curbside charging becomes more common in America, like it's becoming in Europe, then the location makes a ton of sense for a parallel parking space.
yeah i just got the ariya and charging it was a pain!! i had to back into the spot and even then the charger barely reached. literally had to put my back tires to the curb lol. besides that tho I've loved every second with it
Awe bummer. I wish y’all took off at 80% from your office and went into Vail for a top off back to 80% time it at the top off and check “consumption” the drive it back near office to charger and check “consumption” again.
I like the Ariya. A great package. But the price... There are a lot of good EV SUV's on the market and coming to market that are very similar to the Ariya at a better price. Vehicles like the Mach-E, Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Ioniq 5, EV6, Q4 etron etc... I really think Nissan is missing the mark on how they priced it.
Is it though? Look away from the tax credit the Ariya is priced pretty much on the same ish range as all of the ev you listed. The equinox and blazer don’t even exist anyways so comparison with them are not applicable. Though comparing features the closest competition is the Ioniq 5 and honestly the Ioniq 5 has faster charging and more interior space so the ariya is a little hard sell
No you should not turn around you should go all the way down into Denton, SilverThorne then drive back up in the Eisenhower tunnel then work your way down back to Denver/Boulder Colorado
You need to visit places outside of the US & Canada, that road isn't curvy by any stretch. Basically straight. Best driving road in the world you need to take this on, the transfagarisian in Romania that is a twisty road and a drivers road definitely.
Tommy synced his shoes to the car! Great review and car. Other than the software, it seems there is conversion of EVs within same size, price, and range classes.
50 or so years ago when Japanese cars became popular, the US Government coerced Japan into building in the US using US labor, so now you see most Japanese companies building cars here for the US market, while no US car company build cars in Japan. Other countries followed suit. EVs are still relatively new (fewer then gas cars) and it takes time to move manufacturing overseas. We need to realize that production moved overseas means job cuts in their home country, so I feel that although the $7500 tax credit was great for US car companies, non-US car companies will need to work harder.
Same, but the big thing keeping me from buying one is the lack of One-Pedal Driving. It's not OPD unless it takes you to a complete stop. Everything else is just strong regen (and I wish Tommy wouldn't call it OPD).
I purchased the Ariya 2 weeks ago in Vancouver Canada and the e-step is pretty close to 1 pedal driving from my experience. The Auto brake when you stop is good also. Ps. I absolutely love driving the vehicle...it's quiet because they used acoustic glass( Multi layer) so it's like being in an extremely expensive vehicle.
@Allen Toyokawa what part is lower quality? The range? The stereo? The speed? The charging? The space? Maybe the glass roof? The price? Low price doesnt mean cheap
Only Tesla or other EVs. I will only go with Tesla. Why do you buy gas engine swapped electric motor cars that drive and operate like traditional cars?
@TFLEV: The steering wheel is CAPACITIVE. You don't have to give ANY torque. You literally have to touch it and that's it. Not sure what went on there, but this is not normal. I do remember Nissan had a bad batch of steering wheels delivered by one of their suppliers. My guess would be, that the wheel in this car indeed was defective. Those warnings actually are very good indeed, the car will even stop and turn the hazards and E-Brake on if you don't react. People do dose off behind the wheel, it happens all the time, so the car better has contigencies for that. But again, I tried the Ariya and all I had to do was let my hand rest at the bottom of that wheel, no force applied whatsover. And that's exactly how it works on the current X-Trail and Qashqai models as well (Rogue and Rogue Sport for you guys over there).
Weatherman Tommy does a fine job of reporting again. Camera Ninja Alex top notch. Music blending.. meh. (sorry) Too loud and distracting. For that $ I would take the Mercedes. Better material to the touch.
7% state of charge to 80% took 34 minutes? When the Ioniq 5 next to it can go from 10% to 80% in around 18 minutes with it's 800V architecture which allows it a max of 240kws. Is Nissan really that far behind? 13 years after their first EV in the Leaf and this it? Wonder what they'll do 13 years from now with their next EV? Up to 200kws? And on top of that, they want all that much money for it? On the plus side, they didn't use CHAdeMO.
@@edwardk779 I've seen many 800v EVs reach 174kws (Lucid, Taycan, etc.) on EA's 150kw chargers because all but one model are in reality 175kw chargers despite their labeling. I've seen the Ioniq 5 reach 157kws on them and do 10% to 80% in 23 minutes. That's an 11 minute difference. I would not call that not charging any faster.
Ariya charges faster compared to most EVs when reaching 96% SoC because it has a significant higher speed at the end of the charging curve compared to nearly all competition. So it can charge the same or more amount of energy in 50 minutes than most rivals. 90kW at 84% SoC is impressive.
The Ariya is great. Where I live the charging stations just suck. I most likely would go Tesla. when planning a trip and reviewing ev chargers, it becomes clear that Tesla has a Lot better network.
The cabin is really weird in this car. It seems like Tommy is almost hunched over trying to reach the steering wheel. Like the dash is too far forward. The pedal are almost under the steering wheel.
194 miles for almost $24+?? That's actually worse than my ICE vehicle. I get 36mpg on the highway. At the current prices of mid to high $3 range. It would cost about $19 to go 193 miles.
Not a big deal if no one was waiting, but then you never know who might pull up after you plug in. This is the kind of etiquette thing people are just going to have to learn as we go. Tommy strikes me as being an unfailingly polite and considerate young man so he probably just didn't think about it.
So I think it’s worth trying to figure out how that cost compares to a gas vehicle, if you have some kind of Honda Civic that gets 50 miles to the gallon, then the cost per mile is about the same. Although with an electric vehicle, you don’t have a lot of the other costs that a gas vehicle might have. But purely on fuel it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of $.10-$.11 a mile if you see a five dollar per gallon cost. Of course, if gas is cheaper, then that same car will do better than this EV. However, the vast majority of gasoline vehicles are closer to the 30 to 35 miles per gallon range. As a result, those vehicles are gonna cost about 50% more per mile. So I figure $.20 a mile for a 37 mile per gallon gas vehicle. so now, the cost for electricity at a charging station is going to save you quite a bit. Not to mention, for regular use between home and work and errands, cost significantly less than that.
Serious question, honestly not trying to be an ass. All these EV videos are “brought to you by Flo Chargers” yet I never see you guys use those chargers. Are there just none in Colorado?
This Nissan Ariya is a mediocre EV at best. It is expensive and if it is replacing the Leaf, Nissan takes away an affordable option for many people to own an EV. The recent AD campaign is very annoying. That all being said Tommy, you guys did a very good honest video showing it's capabilities, as usual. Thanks! If I had the options of Buy it, Lease it or Forget it I would Forget IT.
Ariya is the best EV from Japanese manufacturers. The problem is they are only one Toyota BZX and its counterpart in Subaru which are worst as EVs and so-so compared to their own other cars while every other manufacturer has better and cheaper EVs including German, American, Chinese (Volvo/Polestar), Korean competition. It is worth mentioning there is a competitor from India made in Austria Jaguar iPace with worse charging but better car overall despite being much older entry on the market. However among American manufacturers Tesla is making the best EVs with charging network but the worst cars ever made by comparison with any other modern car.
That whole "where's the button" thing when you were showing off the drawer is exactly why physical buttons are better for usability.

Electrics won’t solve everything, but carbon emissions must be reduced for your future children and grandchildren!
Why is it difficult for car manufacturers getting over 300 mile range (with AWD included with that range) in their vehicles when asking for price around $50-60k
Politic! My relatives in Europe got Chinese brand suv for 50 k you get more fun car and more mileage. Design of BYD made by Mercedes
It needs a larger battery pack, but a larger pack means: larger (heavier) vehicle, more battery weight, higher overall cost.
Some Chinese EVs get up to 600 miles
Love my Nissan Venture +,FWD, epa is 304, I’m getting around 340 miles. $46 + $7.5 tax credit (I preordered it)! 😊
Nice. I didn't know what car you were talking about for a minute, because the plethora of trim names on the Ariya are just next-level stupid. I hope Nissan starts passing on the tax credit via the leasing loophole for the rest of us.
@@mikefarrington7141 I’m sure they will! Great ev crossover it you don’t want to do the St Elon route
Wow, 340 range, that’s great.
A lot of testers seem to miss that preorders get the tax credit. And oddly that the vehicle is 20k less on base trim/range. Not sure that having a bevy of choices is a detriment.
how did u get the tax credit? im really contemplating on buying it becoz its not on the federal credit list
Yeah you would be a fool to get this over the model y
There’s no such thing as a $7500 rebate…it’s a tax credit. Not the same thing. Most will not qualify for the full tax credit (it all depends on how much you make and how much income tax you pay).
@@vg3430 I would personally expect most new car buyers to qualify. I would be interested to see the stats on the people that couldn't. Is a single person making under $48k or so really going to be in the market for a $45k car, for example? Or, how many married couples actually make over $300k? Maybe if they're both doctors or lawyers?
@@vg3430 people that can afford a car like this pay way more than 7500$ in federal tax each year.
You can pick one of these for 10k off at our local Nissan Dealer. It’s an Evolve trim. It’s beautiful.
Spotted the Jeff Arcuri ref. Full beans!
How’d that semi make out with the smoking brakes?
Thought I’d seen that ARIYA uses capacitive touch-detection on the steering wheel? Does it change how many hands or position required for different road types?
The most demanding test ever done with an EV Ariya was when Chris and Julie Ramsey drove their Ariya from the North Pole to the South Pole. Absolutely no issues with the car. Not even an ICE bucket can make that claim. Everything was stock except for adding large wheels to deal with the terain. .
Nobody mentions the charging port location. This is the least convenient location of any EV. Think about it. Left fender, front, driver's side rear, even passenger side rear is better.
not when you pull up to a tesla charger or curb side charger
If curbside charging becomes more common in America, like it's becoming in Europe, then the location makes a ton of sense for a parallel parking space.
yeah i just got the ariya and charging it was a pain!! i had to back into the spot and even then the charger barely reached. literally had to put my back tires to the curb lol. besides that tho I've loved every second with it
Can anyone tell me how much per mile this trip cost while using the public charger (miles from charger back to shop)?
Awe bummer. I wish y’all took off at 80% from your office and went into Vail for a top off back to 80% time it at the top off and check “consumption” the drive it back near office to charger and check “consumption” again.
Looks nice in the red
Ioniq 5, EV6 is junk
@@sentryion3106 dude there is no comparison, this is better than any korean car
@@bobdylan6773 in what way? Just because it’s Japanese?
@@sentryion3106 it's a troll. Ignore them and just report as spam.
You have no clue how roads are built in areas with mountains.
@@michaels3003 I do as I grew up in the Rocky Mountains I know exactly how they are built. Moving on.
Does the Ariya offer battery preconditioning?
Yes. Manual pre-conditioning.
5:01 could anyone take the car off charge without your consent ?
Tommy synced his shoes to the car! Great review and car. Other than the software, it seems there is conversion of EVs within same size, price, and range classes.
34 min charge time. In my ICE @ 60 mph, I’m 34 miles closer to my destination while you’re eating crappy food in wait mode.
I like the Ariya.
Same, but the big thing keeping me from buying one is the lack of One-Pedal Driving. It's not OPD unless it takes you to a complete stop. Everything else is just strong regen (and I wish Tommy wouldn't call it OPD).
Best in class, that is for sure
I purchased the Ariya 2 weeks ago in Vancouver Canada and the e-step is pretty close to 1 pedal driving from my experience. The Auto brake when you stop is good also. Ps. I absolutely love driving the vehicle...it's quiet because they used acoustic glass( Multi layer) so it's like being in an extremely expensive vehicle.
@@Dutchy1972 How much do you pay per Kwh in your area? I pay $0.33 per Kwh
Great video! Thank you. The car is old tech already. Perhaps the next gen with NACS/Tesla charging connector and 300 mile range..
$ 62,000 is Way over priced for this car. I’d rather get a model y, Mach e, or even an ID 4
I'd rather have the Y LR for the money.
So you would want a much lower quality product?
@Allen Toyokawa what part is lower quality? The range? The stereo? The speed? The charging? The space? Maybe the glass roof? The price? Low price doesnt mean cheap

If it's my only car, Tesla it is
Only Tesla or other EVs. I will only go with Tesla. Why do you buy gas engine swapped electric motor cars that drive and operate like traditional cars?
As a top spec it's a BIG no. If it were 10K less maybe. Right now, it's the Ioniq5 or 6
So right now you would prefer to drive junk??
@@allentoyokawa9068 What do you mean???
@@allentoyokawa9068 no Tesla's and Ariya are too new to know how well they do.
That works out to 32 mpge where I live cost wise. That is terrible.
I have an Ioniq 5. Almost all the EA chargers in my area are 150kw so the Ioniq 5 would not charge any faster.
@@edwardk779 Wow you bought that junker?? I don't know if I should feel sorry for you or laugh!
Dude they are far ahead, you have no clue what you are talking about
Ariya charges faster compared to most EVs when reaching 96% SoC because it has a significant higher speed at the end of the charging curve compared to nearly all competition.
❤❤❤ GREAT CHOICE IN MUSIC 🎵🎶 NICE VIBE
194 miles for almost $24+?? That's actually worse than my ICE vehicle. I get 36mpg on the highway. At the current prices of mid to high $3 range. It would cost about $19 to go 193 miles.
Bro, I didn't look that goofy in the 80s with my Vans and Bugle Boy jeans.
I hope you do this test for the new Polestar 4 when it is released next year 😍
Why use a 350 when a 150 charger would provide sufficient power and free up that charger for a car that can charge over 150. Am i missing something?
Not a big deal if no one was waiting, but then you never know who might pull up after you plug in.
This is the kind of etiquette thing people are just going to have to learn as we go. Tommy strikes me as being an unfailingly polite and considerate young man so he probably just didn't think about it.
All of the chargers at this station are 350, except 1 that has chademo
Tommy has the same hair stylist as his dad.
Seems like a nice car but the price will have to come way down with such horrible range.
4:30 when I refuel with gasoline, it takes about five minutes and I don’t have the patience for that.
Well it sucks to be you.
Not ideal for fast road trips. But for relaxed ones with the family is not too bad.
The steering wheel is touch sensetiv, you don't have to move the wheel.
Love my Genesis GV60 Performance.
You don't need to add torque on the steering wheel. It's capacitive touch. You were maybe touching the wrong parts of the steering wheel?
“You’re holding it wrong” where did I hear that?
3 stage test
1st stage is not to run into the garage door jamb
It's about 10K overpriced.
Why is American Electricity so expensive?
62k😪😪😪
At $63k, it's Cadillac Lyriq price without the Lyriq specs or luxury
Believe it or not, EVs are the new popular kids on the block. They look good, and they have the new tech.
Great video mate
Im waiting for the Chevy Blazer EV
Serious question, honestly not trying to be an ass. All these EV videos are “brought to you by Flo Chargers” yet I never see you guys use those chargers. Are there just none in Colorado?
Tommy is styling with those shoes which match the car!
Fashion means absolutely nothing and is a useless and stupid thing.
I think that they will continue the Lead, but in name only. Unsure what it will be once the current Leaf ends production
It is NOT replacing the Leaf and if you ever had driven one, you would know that it is indeed a very impressive car.
You are clueless at best.. you need to get over it, this EV is awesome
and no one cares what you think, you couldn't afford it anyhow
