  • I collected my fist EV, a Nissan Ariya Advance with a 63kWh battery, in December 2022. I originaly intended to make a "6 months later" video, but after nearly 8 months here it its! With footage filmed over a few weeks, here are my thoughts on owning an EV and how Nissan have stepped up with their first fully electric vehicle since the Leaf.
    If you have any questions I'd love to try to answer them - just post below and I'll do my best.

    I owned a 22 leaf for 2 years, put 33,000 miles on it. Absolutely loved it, I had no problems, loved the one pedal driving. I traded it for an Ariya 😢about 3 months ago. Wow what an upgrade. My leaf had a range in the summer of 270 miles, and that was real world, I kept very close checks on my mileage and when it said 200 miles it was 200 or more. I live near mountains so my driving includes hills, I found the regen driving to help quite a lot. I averaged 3.7 miles/kWh nearly all the time with my leaf. My new area evolve plus 4 4wheel drive with the large battery is giving me in winter months 3.5 kWh. It’s faster than my leaf, rides so much better and is so much more quiet than the leaf. Because the battery is larger it does take a little longer to charge than the leaf with level 2 charger, which is what I always use. Only charged the leaf 2 times with quick charger. My range on the Ariya in warmer weather was over 300 miles, but as I got it in late fall it’s been colder which reduces mileage by 20% or more. My only complaint with the Ariya is no true one pedal driving. It’s difficult to understand how nice that is unless you have used it for years and then it’s not available!

      My wife did not like one pedal driving and does enjoy driving the Ariya. The leaf would let you turn one pedal off, just wish Ariya would let us turn true one pedal on!

    I have an Ariya and the app works wonderfully for me. Also, you have the charge timer programmed, that's why it wasn't charging in your video.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're not the first person to suggest that. However, it WAS charging - the app just said it wasn't. The charge window set in the car was active at that time. The app has only done this twice in the 8 months I've owned the car but there's definitely a problem in there somewhere!

    Hi Andy, yet again an excellent video! As I’ve said before I have the same model as you except I have the technology pack and a cream interior with the 22kw on board charger. I love this car, I think once you’ve owned an EV the “Range anxiety “ disappears. I had a trip from Cheshire to Cornwall recently and had almost zero issues regarding charging. I think you just need a different mind set and ensure you plan ahead. Would like your thoughts on any defects or problems you may have had. I have had a few, N/S blind spot indicator doesn’t really work, drivers heated seat with a mind of its own, when I remotely set the air con/heating via the app, it sets the alarm off. I have the vehicle booked in to Nissan soon so we’ll see what becomes of these issues. Anyway as I said great review, keep them coming 👍🏻

    Lots of stuff I can relate to here Andy. Great video.
    We bought our 2 year old used ID.3 1st Edition in March 2023 and we have used superchargers 3 times. Once was essential on a longer journey, one was trying a new site on the one charger network where we have an account and one was pure curiosity. We do not have a home charge capability but use fast and rapid chargers locally. It's really not a problem and still much cheaper than running the equivalent petrol engines VW.
    The VW app is basic and seems to work wherever we are BUT I am wondering what happens when the car reaches 3 years old. It is my understanding that the free 4g connectivity ends. Do I really want to pay for 4g in the car? I am really not convinced. VW has called me in for a "complementary" free check before the first MOT so this could be interesting. 🤔
    The car came with a lifetime average of 3.8 miles/kWh over 11,800 miles. In just over 1,500 miles we have raised the lifetime average to 4.2 miles/kWh and regularly see days with over 5 miles/kWh with the maximum being 5.4 miles/kWh. The one long motorway trip we took saw the car returning 3.8 miles/kWh driving at 60 mph using the ACC.
    The VW seems to do "one pedal driving" in the same way as the Nissan with the automatic handbrake being activated by a short press and hold of the brake pedal. It releases automatically when you press the accelerator.
    The instant torque from the lights is excellent fun and it is easy to upset the fossilsaur drivers who think that their steed is invincible. Drivers do get irritated when we accelerate away to the speed limit but then don't exceed it. They seem to think that as we've smashed them at the traffic lights grand Prix that we'll be wanting to race them.
    Overall it's the best car that we've ever owned and I really could not contemplate a return to a fossilsaur.

    Great video! I love your energy! Curious about wear and tear on tires and also cost of maintenance. Im itching for a new car, which will be electric, but am thinking it would make sense to wait a few years until the bugs are worked out and mechanics are more used to working on EVs. Oh and i agree that the copper trim in the interior is and odd choice for any exterior colour other than copper!

      @harriettanthony7352 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To "Louisevessey" Might this EV owner give you some answers? Tyre wear is greater than a gas car, but not by much, and it depends on the brand of tyre and other factors. And to wait a few years is to wait forever; it took over 100yrs for the gas engine to reach the point of stupidity. For some real world example: the Kia Niro BEV came out in 2019{I own one}. It won awards for excellence that year and every years since to 2023. The new version has the same underpinnings as the 2019. it works don't change. So go buy one, a Niro I recommend, but not the Ayria, too many issues, espc. for a first time buyer

      Hi Louise. Thanks for your feedback. So pleased you enjoyed the video. I'm probably a bit biased, however electric is ready for the big time now. All EVs are great fun to drive. If you're worried about charging then a Tesla is a good bet as the charging infrastructure is second to none, however for the rest of us charging out and about is getting better all the time. There are so many chargers being put in within a few miles of where I live and this is typical up and down the country. It's an exciting time to be jumping on the EV bandwagon and whatever EV you go for, you won't be disappointed! Take a few out for a test drive - once you go EV you won't want to go back! Best wishes, Andy

    Hi. Great video thanks. Thought I would share this. I took delivery of aan Ariya in November last year. After 20k km the Ariya suffered a sudden charge loss, and stopped driving. Turns out it's two bad cells. Nissan towed the car under warranty but I've been waiting nearly two months for parts to arrive from Japan.... and not had use of the car in the interim. Not a great showing for a top of the range product...I live in Belgium by the way.

    Thanks for this review, I've been thinking about an Ariya for a few months now and have almost made the leap a couple of times. I currently have an ePower Qashqai Tekna, which is a great car to drive, and economy is really good. However, I think the styling of the Ariya is fantastic and it's tempting me to make the change to a full EV. My only real concern is range anxiety and charging away from home. Looks like I do similar milage to you, (I've had my ePower for just over 8 months and have done 4,500 miles), although I do go away 3 or 4 times a year around the country on holiday; you do mention charging in the video, but I'd be interested in your findings when you are on holiday with the car. At the moment I'm looking at the 87kw battery pack in either a new Advance or a used Evolve trim. my thinking is the larger battery pack will alleviate the range fear.

    If your My Energi Zappi is also connected to solar PV, you may have the Zappi set to ECO+, which will use spare solar (above around 1.2kWh) to top up the car. Moving to fast will charge when it is pluggged in, but if you have cheap overnight tariff as I do, i would set it to scheduled and set the times to charge overnight when tariff is cheap.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately my solar system isn't large enough to throw out enough energy to charge just off the panels, so I have to supplement it with power from the grid. I was on a tariff that gave me cheap energy in 2 periods, one overnight and one early afternoon but have just switched to a tracker tariff that gives me low energy costs all day. It's not as cheap as a dedicated EV tariff but due to the low mileage I currently do those EV tariffs aren't worth it for me. Thanks for watching and posting a comment!

    Nice video mate but sorry after 93k miles of hard taxi working on my leaf (sold it for the E niro 2 yes ago) my E pedal and brakes was performing as good as the 1st day I picked her up. Ps I think you'll find the main reason Nissan ditched the true one pedal driving (again without being pedantic its not one pedal driving unless it does what it's supposed to be ) and that's because the brake pads don't wear out it's a shame as if it had it we'd see many more on the roads😂 Cheers

    Concerning the "not charging" issue, at minute 16:11 I saw you have the "Charge timer" set to "on"; could it be that you looked when it's not scheduled to charge? We have the Evolve, and we never charge with the timer. For the rest, I agree that this is really a fun car - it's our first EV as well. The range is just astonishing, the ad's say 530km wltp (sorry I live in Europe ;-) ), but the way we're using it we get sometimes over 600km! The only thing I miss, is that you can't configure it to stop charging once it reached a certain percentage, or it must be that I haven't rtfm'ed very well.
    g.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your feedback. All valid points you make. I've experienced this app problem with the charge timer off as well as on, and this charging was taking place during the charge schedule time that I had set. The reason I use the timer is that I'm on an electricity tariff that has 2 cheaper slots: 4am - 7am and 1pm to 4pm so I have those set in the car so I can plug it in at any time but know that it will only charge when the rate is at its lowest. It was a fair observation for you to make, though!
      You're spot on about not being able to set a maximum charge percentage. I wish I'd remembered to include this in the video. I've fed this back to Nissan as I'm currently taking part in a project getting feefback from a small group of Ariya owners direct to the company so I'm hopeful others will have also mentioned this and we'll see it in a future software update.
      These are minor niggles. The car is great!

    We have had our Ariya for 13 months. In the first month we suffered a catastrophic failure in the middle of France which was incredibly badly managed by both RAC Europe and Nissan. It was just a 12V battery failure but the car was off the road for 2-3 weeks. However since then we've both got to love it although still using one pedal nor autopark. Charge overnight at 9p /kwh with Octopus. About to embark on another journey of 1000 miles to south of France

    The charging 'problem' looks to be because you had the charge timer set, (there is an info message on your drivers display saying 'charge timer on' at 16:11 in the video. This allows you to time the charge instead of it starting when you plug in. So if you have a cheaper electricity tariff after a certain time, you can set the timer to start at that time, and the car will just sit there until that time, after which it will start to charge. Thanks for the video, I'm considering an upgrade from my MG ZS EV to an Evolve E-force Ariya!

    Re driving experience, for me I often think the Ariya is not the best mannered car in the wet, certainly not my best driving experience, I feel it should be rear wheel drive, (previously drove Lexus is300h for 6 years). Select 'B' for long steep descents and you will understand its purpose. Yes I think Nissan set the one pedal driving just right and agree with your description. I have the long range evovle and that centre consol never gets moved. Sunroof and Headup display are very useful. 3.7m/kwh long term is same as my long range.

      @GadielVaStar Ariya Evolve 87kWhr. At 100 % charge rate it can indicate 330mile (summer) range but in reality you could achieve 290-310. Winter 100% charge may indicate 270-290 range and achieve say 250-260mile. .

      Hi and thanks for watching and your feedback. Sorry it took me a couple of weeks to answer! I would still buy the smaller battery version myself. It's lighter than the larger battery and I've read that some people find the driving feel in the Ariya "lumpy" but I'm wondering if all of the people who have said that reviewed the 87kWh version because I have no issues with the ride in mine at all. Having said that, the question of battery size is down to lifestyle. I do lots of short trips and can charge at home so the smaller option is no problem for me at all. Even the small battery will comfortably get me anywhere I want to go, probably for several days. It's even large enough to get me to my holiday destination without having to stop on the way, or for those rare further away holidays with just one stop - which I'd do anyway for a comfort break and to let us all stretch our legs (including the dog). If you do more longer trips out then you may feel larger is better. Good luck! Do let me know what you decide. Thaks for watching!

    Good video, I miss my EV but due a few factors including world events ramping up the price of electricity and a change in circumstances meaning I went from a ~200 mile per week commute to a 150 mile per *month* commute (if that), I went back to a petrol, at least for now. I had to change cars earlier this year and needed something that could tow and unfortunately us early(ish) EV adopters where left with some cars which were not capable of towing, including my 2020 Hyundai Kona which the manufacturer just didn't seem to think anyone would need/want to tow with so didn't bother allowing it. I did look at getting an EV which could tow but the economics where difficult to justify over a similarly spec'ed petrol car as it tends to be only the larger more expensive models which can tow a reasonable weight. It also massively affects the range when you tow meaning public chargers are more of an issue. When I had my Kona I think I used a public charger maybe a dozen times and towards the end I started seeing long queues for charging and very expensive rates.
    I will go back at some point unless another technology comes along.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry to hear that. You might have bailed out just as things are ramping up and improving exponentially. However the towing thing is a valid issue. Some EVs are now offering decent towing capacities but it's a factor, you're not wront there. I do low mileage too but couldn't face going back to petrol myself. I hope it's not too long before you feel you can switch back. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences.

    I'm currently looking at buying an Ariya for my wife but struggling with range anxiety on the 63kwh. The price difference between the 63kwh and the larger battery is quite a lot. The only thing that worries me is will I get to my destination when I got to London every 6weeks. 140miles each way.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      A lot depends on your driving style. Hammering it down the motorway will use more battery than driving on country roads (as indeed it uses more fuel in an ICE car) so YMMV. For me, I'm consistently getting a predicated range in excess of 250 miles on the 63kWh battery version of the Ariya. But even if you were to achieve that, it's not enough to get you the full 280 miles for that round trip to London. However, I'd feel pretty confident that however you drive, 140 miles one-way will easily be in the range of the car.
      So it'll likely need a charge in London, but there are loads of chargers in the capital so that shouldn't be a problem.
      I've got a journey next Friday that's going to be about 160 miles in total, 80-odd miles each way and I know without any doubt at all that I can make it there and back easily without having to charge and with plenty of battery left after the trip. I probably won't bother charging right up to 100% before I go.
      I hope that helps. I wish you well with your purchase!

    Actually the leaf does use the regular brakes with e-pedal. So seizing up won’t happen with them, and a full stop with one pedal driving is amazing. Especially for city driving, so relaxing that you don’t need to use the brake pedal at all. Kind of a dealbreaker for the Ariya coming from a leaf.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I understand your feelings. For me with no prior experience of one pedal driving it's not so bad, however I appreciate it would be for you. The Ariya has driving in traffic jams (can't remember the marketing term they use off hand). That kind of works like the Leaf in that it'll go to a complete stop without you needing to do anything, then a tap of a button on the steering wheel to move again with the traffic. I use that all the time in jams.

  • @Jolleseileren

    Was the reason not charging, that your battery was cooling down due to the somewhat heigh air-temp outside and also inside the car? How does this Nissan do warming and cooling the battery if needed? I am looking at cars these days, wanting to buy later - Nissan Ariya looks nice.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not sure what the cause was but you can pre-condition the battery prior to charge. I think when I tested it I hadn't pressed that button early enough to give it a chance to work. The car seems to handle battery temperature pretty well but I haven't rapid charged very much so most of my experience is with much slower 7kW home charging. Thanks for watching.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My cage has a slightly sloping side which makes it great for hatchbacks and means I don’t have to put the seats down. It’s big enough to accommodate two English cocker spaniels comfortably. I imagine a single German Shepherd would fit in there. Probably… 🤔 A cage without a slope might not fit without the seats being down but of course it depends on the dimensions of it. There’s a fake floor so in theory you could fit a taller cage in there but I keep the floor in and store my charging cable there. If it would help for me to get my tape measure out I could make a TH-cam short with the dimensions! Let me know if that would be helpful and I’ll get my camera out! Thanks for watching 😀

      Hi. Thanks for your question. I'm not sure what part of the video in particular led to your question. The car connects to my phone via Bluetooth and also wireless Apple Carplay. The car itself (for OTA software updates and communicating with the Nissan Connect app remotely) has its own built in system for that, and I have no idea what network it uses. It'll be one of the mobile networks, but that's hidden from me. I'm probably not answering the correct question for you, though...!? Thanks for watching.

    It should have had 3 Phase 22kW AC Charging. They need to migrate to the new CATL SHENXING LFP battery with faster charging and better cold weather performance.

    • @TheRamblyChannel
      @TheRamblyChannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      LFP is the way to go for sure. No more worrying about only charging to 80% most of the time. At the moment LFP batteries don't have the same density as traditional batteries but the technology is improving all the time and as the charging infrastructure gets better (and despite the naysayers, it will) the need for long range will diminish.

The build quality doesn't appear to be that great, but I'd love to try one to find out for myself. I certainly have few complaints about my Ariya in relation to build quality. There a few about the interior materials on the Advance spec, but overall it's reasonably good.
