      @@nickc6570 last time i did a shifter everything was up top, and the car didn't have a reverse lockout. This is very complex because Suburu doesn't want you to do it. It's still less than an hour total, but it is a lot. That pin in the reverse lockout is the worst. I used a 1/8 flat and then held an allen with a pair of pliers cause i don't own punches. Then tragedy struck as i found the nut to be missing. Been looking for it and can't find it. Problem is it's small, but it's also big. And a random replacement nut won't fit without grinding it to fit into place or modifying the housing. That little nut is the only thing stopping me from having this done. Only question is where did it go. I'm going to end up doing it the hard way, and a couple months down the road finding it and knowing exactly what this random nut i found is.
      Edit, i found the nut. It was being held hostage by a 17mm socket for some reason. That's why i couldn't find it. The weird thing is that socket was no where near where i was working.

  • @lokerola
    @lokerola ปีที่แล้ว +9

    OK, this video was really crucial to a successful install. I'm not a tech and I did this in my driveway. It took almost 5 hours to slowly get this done. The damn roller pin would NOT come out. It would only come about 1/2 out. I ended up cutting it in half with a saw and hammered the remainder back in so I could slide the shifter out. Ooof. Lots of hammering and cursing. Otherwise, it went pretty smoothly. It's no fun under the car and I hate being under a few tons of weight that could crush me, but it went OK. The last thing that ISN'T in this video is adjusting the 5th/6th gear stock shifter stop. I couldn't shift into 6th after the re-install and thought for sure I had screwed something up. After some more searching on youtube I found a video on installing a new 1st/2nd Billetworkz shiftstop and it addresses adjusting the stock 5/6 stop. PLEASE, please add the adjustment of the stock 5/6 stop to this video - or link to a new vid on how to adjust it. Anyway. this video is CRITICAL to getting this shifter swap done. The shifter is kick-ass and I love it. It just takes a lot of work to get it installed, especially if you're not a pro tech. If you're going to do this, plan on a whole day of work, get your tools ready, and take your time.

      Just got mine done today, the whole installation took me around 5-6hrs as well because of no lift so it was 3 times more the work. The installation is very straight forward but them mofos bolts took me forever to get off. Overall, it was not complicated but just difficulties finding tools that would help. The pin was pretty ez for me, you can buy a set of punches for 15 and just pick the size that you need, be patient and smack it slow and hard. I got the whole kit done, shaft, bushing, and plates too. Everything is really sturdy just need to get used to how short it actually is, huge difference I would say since you can “feel” your car more. Well done brother!!!

      15:14 Timestamp for referencing reverse lockout installation instructions. After a year+ of use, the retaining ring got dislodged from its groove, causing the spring to no longer return the assembly to its down position when not using the reverse gear. Easy fix, though. I removed the upper receiver, reshaped the retaining ring, and reinstalled while sitting in the driver's seat.

      The 18+crosstrek has the same shifter as the 2015+wrx, it also fits the 2017+ imprezza.
      And yes super worth upgrade. I put in my crosstrek, and it's such a better drive now. I don't think they need to make a video of the shift stop. It's kind of self explanatory for anyone thinking of putting it in. You just put it in first, set the stop, put in 5th set the reverse lockout stop, and tighten it down. There's plenty of other video on TH-cam about it. But if you drive manual you shouldn't need an explanation. As long as you can get into all gears, you did it right.

    Make sure you tighten the ball down when you get it. It comes loose in a few weeks and causes some issues. The rod and ball are held together with a pretty loose allen screw so give it a good crank when you get it. Should alleviate the issues you will find if you don't. If it does come loose you better hope you put it back together in the right position. The slop in 3rd and 4th is disgusting if it's not perfect. Also was not shown in the video, but you must adjust the factory reverse shift stop position in order to use the shifter. If you don't you cannot access 5th and 6th. Getting it out the first time is the hardest. After that, it's pretty simple and burned in your memory. So taking it back out to fix it isn't the worst, but it is tedious that you have to do it again. But i still love this shifter.

      Take off the stock shift stop. 2 10 mm bolts on top. Take them out and remove the shift stop this will give you access to the bolt attached to the nut. You should have a little wiggle room to stick something in there stop it from spinning. I had the same issue with the 7mm bolts. But with those you have no room to play with. The issue is the plastic housing gets damaged from the nut being overtorqued. Unfortunately it's ruined forever and there is no fix, without buying a new housing, but you can't buy a new housing without the whole shifter assembly, and it's $200. So just make it work lol. When.putting the shift stop back in, do not overtoque the 10mm bolt, when you feel it.get tight, stop. If you go any further you will destroy the threads on the bolt and it become a bitch to get it back out. Luckily i order the shift stop with it that came with 2 brand new bolts, and luckily the threads for the other bolt that it bolts into were fine.

    • @mattevans1643
      @mattevans1643 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the reverse lockout should be pointing toward 5th and 6th. There are 2 bolts that hold down the 5th and 6th shift stop. Loosen the two bolts, and move the shift stop out of the way, put the car in 5th, and position the stock shift stop so that you can go into 5th, but no further. Tighten down the stock shift stop. Make sure you can go into 6th as well, and you're good.
      On the stock assembly they put white paint where the stock shift stop line ups. That is for the stock shifter. For the billet shifter you have to move the shift stop out to accommodate the longer reverse lockout.

      @@LarkinFilmz you do not want to install the shifter plate cover plate. If you install the cover plate, it won’t allow you to engage certain gears.

    Does this fit a 2020+ wrx sti?

      No, the STI is a different shifter. This fits a 2015+WRX, 2017+Imprezza, or 2018+crosstrek.
