Hi, thanks for the video. I got this light and I love it with V-mount battery and the tiny 30x55cm (almost 1'x2') Phottix G Capsule softbox. It's like a cheaper (darker) alternative to Aputure F21c. Also way cheaper than Nanlite 60c because the colors are not blended : Nanlite COB is uniform whatever the color you choose. But it's only useful with Fresnel. I'm wondering if the FS's are brighter and/or quieter. I prefer having a back handle and (normal) swivel bracket. If Neewer releases FS150C one day, it would be FIRE
@@fredericp.9593 I'm glad you like you like your setup, but I don't see how a COB spotlight with a lantern-type softbox could be an alternative for an Aputure F21C. which is a flexible LED matte. Even though you can use the F21C in a similar way that you could use the MS60C once diffused... you could never use a MS60C as you would use a F21C. The goal of the F21C is to be installed anywhere.. being extremely thin and flexible. You can literally gaff-tape it to the wall, of the ceiling, or any surface = Every shot is now possible with good lighting. There's just nothing like it at the moment.
I agree. I get a lot of offers to review lights and they are almost always daylight-balanced or bicolor, but I haven't come across a light of this size with the RGB component to it. HAD to review it. Glad I did! Thanks for the watch!
Bought this a week ago from Amazon and looked online for a few review vids and did not find anything really in depth...and been a bit disappointed with the light until I came across your video,I am downloading the app as we speak, the app opens up way more possibilities than I thought and even imagined thank, earned a sub for sure.
Great and knowledgeable review, especially liked your con about the Bowen mt not being the default, but as you know, Neewer likes to be proprietary. Just purchased the MS60C on Amazon for 136 USD and it arrives tomorrow along with a 20" Neewer Lantern, also on sale. However, before turning to videography, I was into photography with a love for umbrellas and will be trying them out for both bounce & shoot-thru diffusion for talking-head video. Your video sure helped me get ready for the MS60C arrival tomorrow. Thank you!
That's a great light! I'm considering the MS150C. Just so you know, the CTO/B function is for people who need to use the MS60C with other lights with gels on (for instance a 5600K with a 1 CTB gel). That way, instead of having to match by eye or using a special meter, you can simply add a ''measured digital gel'' that will roughly match the other light. Thanks for the review!
In the end I bought the MS150B for a little more money. When I took all the elements out of the case I was able to see the good quality of the materials, with many metal parts and a very good design and finish. Before buying batteries, two questions arise; Can it work with a single 7.4V battery? With the two 7400mAH F970 batteries, what is the maximum power that can be achieved and for what duration?
For a podcast studio? It should be. You may want to look into a lantern instead of a softbox, depending on your room configuration. I am running two 60W LEDs. My key light is about a meter and a half from me and it at about 50% power. I am running my lens at about f/3.5, my ISO is at 800 and my frame rate is 30fps. If you have two of these lights, you run the lights at 100% with a lantern and MAYBE have to bump your ISO to 1600, you should be good to go. Or you can open the aperture to 2.8. Obviously, if you do 24FPS instead of 30FPS, you can slow your shutter speed down a little, which will let in more light. Hopefully sharing my settings will give you a better idea. I do think you could pull it off with two of these.
The CB60 is over twice the weight, larger and brighter. So if you want brightness and the extra weight doesn't bother you, the CB60 would be a good choice. If you want essentially the same light, but want one that is more portable and just a little darker, the MS60C would be a better choice. It depends on what is most important to you.
Thank you for a very well done and comprehensive review. 👍 As a stills photographer, I understand the MS60 (B or C) is not really appropriate. I do have a question though; when taking stills of a person in a low light environment where ISO has to be high to capture the (low) ambient light, would the MS60 do the trick? I already have a bunch of portable flashes but I find that it is difficult to balance flash and ambient light when it is dark (dark room or outside at night let's say). Balancing white balance is an issue too as ambient light will rarely be of the same color as flash. 💁♂ Would the MS60 be OK if setup at a few feet from the person? Or would the more powerful version be required. 🤷♂
Typically at one meter with a softbox at full power you could pull off ISO 400-800 at 2.8 or faster. Model couldn’t flow pose. Would need to freeze as you would likely be 1/125 to 1/250. Freezing motion would not be an option. I have 300W LED lights and I’m able to stop some of those to f4 or 5.6 with the other settings above being the same. It ends up being annoyingly bright to the model though.
Thanks for the quick reply @@KevinDeal 🙂 I'm not too concerned with stopping motion but I prefer to work at f4 or 5.6 to have good DoF. Looks like this spot wouldn't cut it then. 😞 Your advice is much appreciated.
Hi Kevin, this is a great video. I found that the ms60b has higher lux value, about 10000lux more than ms60c measured at .5meter at 3200k and about 15000lux more at 6500k. Which seems obvious but I wanted to know if that difference make the ms60b more suitable for portraits and video in the cold and warm spectrum alone. And does the ms60b have green/magenta color shift option like the ms60c?
Hi Kevin, I do still photo, portrait. And I'm considering buying this light specifically to light my background. Given what you show in this video, at 13:24 f/2.8 1/125 iso 400. I could shoot at iso 640 with good quality having dual iso on the lumix S5 that use. 1/125 as flash sync speed, the background does not move so no impact and my subject is frozen by flash lighting. The idea would be to have an rgb light to choose how to color my background. Any idea why not do this? Any other budget light you would rather recommend ? Thanks a lot for your videos and happy new year!!!
As a beginner I'm looking forward to this being my first led light for standard talking head videos, would you say it's bright enough to do these. Some of the compatibility stuff is a bit confusing to me. What kind of stand and diffuser do you recommend?
It’s definitely bright enough for studio stuff. All day long. I shot with it during the day yesterday in the shade and it was just bright enough. If you’re talking to a camera like I do, 24 to 28 in softbox with a Bowen’s mount is all you need.
Hey Kevin , would you happen to know the size of the reflector that the light comes with ? It looks smaller than the standard 7inch reflector but I might be wrong
@@KevinDealI meant the light reflector with the silver reflector inside and the black coating on the outside that’s attached to the light . Standard reflectors are typically 7 inches but this one seems smaller
Hi there. I have a Godox ML60bi and I like it a lot. I need to be able to move them quickly in weddings and I use them with batteries. I need a second one but I came across the Neewer MS60bi (which is similar to the C but no RGB) and I wonder how the neewer will compare to the godox. The Neewer is a lot cheaper for sure. Almost $100 in Canada...I wonder if you have an opinion...in the name of research! Thanks
I own the UL60bi, so kind of close to your ML60bi. In the beginning of the video, you see me in my studio shot. That's the UL60bi. So if you don't notice a huge difference in the first and second half of my video in the studio lighting, that will likely give you your answer. Nice video, one thing I really hate is the fact that neewer fire/candle effect is really fake, compared to Aputure which has realistic fire effect
Perhaps they will improve upon it in future lights.
Considering getting two of these with soft boxes for a budget podcast studio... Will they be enough for key lights?
