do realise that jumping into water that cold can be fatal, a heart attack can happen to anyone who tries. Swimming in it for more than a few minutes is also a very bad idea (and even those few minutes without proper gear is dangerous).
So wonderful to see two young, intelligent great people living life like you do, not wasting it while you're young on the everyday grind. At 78, I'm so envious & happy for you both at the same time! BTW, my 103 year old mother (who's lived with us for 35 years) watches in wonder of your adventures & also LOVES you two! This is a beautiful wine toast she taught me years ago that is so apropos for you two when you click glasses... "Here's to health, love & wealth!" In that order. And your wealth is not measured in money. It's your full life together. Be safe. Sniff life, every bit, while you can. Love you guys.
A mother and two baby polar bears on their own private island, and jumping into 2 degrees water on purpose. Now that's a sailing adventure you don't see everyday. Stay groovy and stay safe.
My thoughts exactly, Tim. I appreciate that they could have got really close to the bears, but didn't. Rather they emoloyed the drone with great respect!
Don't know how you do it but your latest episode always seems to turn out being your best. The drone shot of Uma heeled over under sail on your departure was the most beautiful video closure.
My wife and I have been watching your videos for 3 years now. This is my first comment, I just don't comment normally. But I want you to know we truly appreciate what you do and your free spirits are so inspiring. One love!
The pinnacle of your northern limits I imagine. A polar bear mum and her two cubs ... what a special treat! Three bears, three dips - hard to beat that. And well done to both boys for holding the space. Lol. I follow Cecilia ... I am mesmerised by Svalbard. Seeing this special region through your eyes has been amazing. Thank you.
Your channel should be required viewing for all high school aged students... Live your life, don't let life's dramas and circumstance rule your choices. We possibly may have more than one life, but each is a chance to find the treasures that may not seem achievable at first thought. You both have done the unimaginable quest for so many people. Just the scenery and life you have captured is worth more than you have endured, sacrificed and persevered through, to make that possible. Your parents should be so satisfied and proud they did their best to instill in you the possibilities that could be, and you are both proof of that viability. So happy for you and them. Never stop...
GRIMMMM! This episode on Cecilia's channel is the whole reason I started following you guys! So happy to see you're point of view and have been binging until now!
I’m with you, Kika. Stay on the boat and watch the pretty bears from afar. When I was little, me and my mom visited a safari park in South Africa during vacation. One day we were in our car, watching some giraffe on one side of the road. The we heard something. On the other side was an elephant flapping its ears at us. Our hearts stopped and my mom stomped on the gas to get us out of its way. When we were clear and away we both bursted out crying/laughing.
It is a rare thing for a YT video to make emotional. You two seem to hit me in the feels on a regular basis. Thanks for doing all the things I wish I'd done and documenting them so beautifully.
Absolutely fantastic!, And how many of the multitude of sailing “vlogers” have ever presented such an event. When I say “I salute you” - I really mean it. You are a well established couple who are doing a very different sort of input on line
This is one of the best TH-cam videos ever! Sport, music, Minecraft etc might get millions of views, Adele might release a new album and blow the internet apart but, for me, nothing will beat seeing polar bear mum and 2 kiddies a little bit too close for comfort through your eyes! I was excited/thrilled/impressed. I hope polar bear mum is well fed enough to be able to feed her pups. [Don't mention climate change, it triggers deniers]
“Here’s to coffee and polar bears” indeed. Holy crap, I just saw how far north you are on a map. No candyass, Mai Tai sipping beach cruising for these two true explorers. That’s why your subscriber numbers are growing. I’m so hooked (but I still have a couch, sigh).
Okay, I've been watching Uma's videos for years, from don't buy a sofa to installing a forklift motor for power to now... I think this video is my new favorite! Waking up to polar bears next door is amazing! Safe travels Uma!!!
So nice to see you get together with Cecilia, Christopher and Grim, which I'm also subscribed to because her channel is amazing. And congratulations on your Arctic swim!, I became instantly frozen just watching the two of you going into the water..lol Excellent video as always💖
So special to wake up to! ❤️ This is such a beautiful moment. Love seeing y’all’s journey and I love your perspective on traveling. You have to take your time and soak up the experience
Kika, your hair is looking great; even if all your tropical sun highlights have gone away. Your excitement when seeing the polar bears is as great as when you are playing in the snow. You both bring joy to my life at a time when I truly need some. Thank you and God bless.
Dan, in polar bears, curious and hungry translate to "Where is my next meal?" Bad mojo when you are the only edible thing around. Nice shots of the bears.
I know it was awesome seeing those 3 Polar bears like that, But! When you really think about it and figure out that you two just witnessed something that like 99.9% of people will never witness, it takes it to an entirely new level of Awesome!
I watch a number of sailing utube videos and Uma is the boat that actually sails. Most of them spend way more time motoring than sailing. I love watching your drone shots of sailing! I really enjoy watching your videos.
I don't care if in reality you made 1 or 10 takes of that wake-up of Kika. It was the perfect intro. Then this discussion about how you can't see the bears from close by and that the professionals have this huge preparation while all the time you interrupt that discussion with amazing closeups of the mother bear with the cubs from the drone. No, you could not your self get closer without safety problems, but you made again first class film. Each Uma Step is a jewel.
Mum, dad and cub polar bear are walking through the arctic. Cub: Mum are we polar bears? Mum: Yes, we are polar bears. Cub: Dad are we really polar bears? Dad: Yes, we are polar bears! Cub: But really? Mum: Yes! Why are you asking that all the time? ..... Cub: I am cold ;-(
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the momma bears won’t let the males bear near the Cubs because they will kill them, don’t know why but that’s one of the main reasons Cubs might not make a adult hood.
Sorry to disaloution you Polar Bears are some of the very few animals that actively hunt humans, during the summers they are very hungry as their food sources are not available, great to see but they would eat you given any chance.
Yes, although they are beautiful, they are the most dangerous animal you can ever meet, they are not afraid of humans. They use to hunt their food on the ice and the fact that the ice on the fjord is gone and that they have to swim out to a barren island to look for food just makes me sad. - A Norwegian.
Probably not the only to comment --- the drone shots of the polar bears were out of this world. The excitement is so big. There is no way I will jump into arctic water. Thanks for the pointer to another fun channel to follow.
Thanks for sharing your experience. If the mother bear was wearing a collar then the Norwegian Polar Institute may be interested to know date, time and lat/long of your observation that they can tie in with their tracking data to see the health of the bear and her cubs.
Polar days, polar bears, polar sailing and a triple dip into polar waters. Warmed by a crackling fire in an iron wood-stove. Doesn't get much better than that. Great 'under sail' drone shots!
11:50 Amazing shot! :-P Flying while sailing :-) No fear! It´s just a drone. If you can recover the footage, it is worth it ;-) But the wind conditions are a little bit unstable in that scene ;-) Tip to the left, tip to the right, tip to the left ;-)
youre nailing the cinematography at the moment, having polar bears on a small island helps sure but seriously nice editing. Are you story boarding this a little now, feels like it has planning. unlike tv there is such a vastness of production on youtube from kids in a bedroom to full-on production types, feels like you guys have really stepped it up
You’re definitely in the polar bear club now. Enjoyed how much fun y’all have in the simple ways. It’s great that you can take the time for the pleasures of life to come to you. It brings you peace and allows us to be at peace with you.
This Episode is absolutely stunning.. the shots of Uma sailing upwind from the drone are awesome! Maybe it was the emotional crescendo of the sailing after the bear shots but the cinematic storytelling is super artful! Thanks for being awesome!
Just now realized that the wood stove fan is a gorgeous maple leaf shape ❤️🍁🇨🇦 your home/boat is so beautiful. Every once in a while I'll pause the video inside the boat and just take a look around.... Again, beautiful 😃. Thanks for sharing it with us! Also - huge thanks for flying the drone over to the polar bears!!!! I hoped you would and you did 🙌🤗
Many congratulations. Imagine in 30 years; you two will remember the Polar Bear encounter to your grandchildren like it was yesterday. I want your life. I bought a couch and having second thoughts now! Much love and respect. I love your art. X

The polar bears heard you talking about walking around on that little island and figured they'd have a try! I'm glad you got to see them from your boat at a safe distance! Absolutely magnificent. I'm so glad you've got the rifle ready and keep an eye out.

So happy you shared your friends with us on this episode. I enjoyed the polar bear shots and scenery sooo much. The music editing was everything! Safe travels.
I originally caught these events on Cecilia's channel, back in the summer, which was what introduced me to you guys. So ... a binge of nearly 300 videos later, and we have come full circle. Wonderful stuff!
Hi I came over from Cecilia's channel! I have been watching her channel a little under a year and been binge watching old episodes and saw the one where you guys met up. So nice to see that meet up from your side of the view :) and to see the beautiful polar bear mom and cubs footage!
What a breathtaking experience seeing a family of polar bears. As you've said, seeing one is elusive enough, but seeing 3, whoa! Great to see all 3 look healthy and fat. Highly encouraging for their survival.
You guys are different kind of channel and different kind of people and that's why I like watching you guys.,. You let me see a part of the world I will never get to see...
I've seen some great Sailing Uma episodes but this is one of the best. Not even Attenborough could capture that immersive realism - from waking Kika to the nervous looks over the shoulder during the pieces to camera as the reality of where they were was brought into sharp focus. Just loved it! Hurry up and come to Australia! PS Weird how guys never swim in really cold water but women do - oh actually maybe not that weird - teehee.
Kika & Dan, I'm so happy that the 2 of you had this wonderful experience and able to share it with us. I always look forward to your next adventure. Being aware of and respecting the environment you are visiting is truly important and amazing.
We had so much fun!! I can't wait to see you guys again! And yes, I am very jealous of your polar bear shots 🙌🏻
My dog is fascinated seeing grimm on the big tv screen
You guys got to hang out?!?! That’s awesome!!

Well said! Cheers!
Epic photography. You two have taken this channel to unbelievable greatness. I just had to go back to the beginning and watch this step twice. : )
I agree. The nature videography is epic, and not just because of the wonderful surroundings.
Magical polar bear siting! Loved it that it was the very island you joked that you could hang out on and not have to worry about polar bears. 😄
A mother and two baby polar bears on their own private island, and jumping into 2 degrees water on purpose. Now that's a sailing adventure you don't see everyday. Stay groovy and stay safe.
Sooo cool! To see polar bears in a "relatively" safe position and be able to take great drone footage from a respectful distance. Wonderful.
My thoughts exactly, Tim. I appreciate that they could have got really close to the bears, but didn't. Rather they emoloyed the drone with great respect!

Ideal use for a drone - great images and no disturbance of the PBs - well-played!
I watch both channels. Cecelia's only for a year or so, Uma for much longer. Enjoy both, though.

PS Weird how guys never swim in really cold water but women do - oh actually maybe not that weird - teehee.
How magical, the stars are aligning for you two!
Love that you are sailing in the attic - and away from the Western Hemisphere.
Kika & Dan, I'm so happy that the 2 of you had this wonderful experience and able to share it with us. I always look forward to your next adventure. Being aware of and respecting the environment you are visiting is truly important and amazing.
I have such a smile during and after so many of the conversations you two have.
Best episode of any channel ever! Thank you for letting us tag along on your adventures.
Just wonderful. Thank you!
I'm pleased you were so aware not to approach them too close to disrupt their space
Magical scenes. I’m happy you two got to share something so rare and wonderful. You definitely earned it.
