    Kika's reaction on seeing snow is so innocently child like at going for a snow angel, rock testing the iced water and snow making out of hot water. Dan's telling of blocked pipes to demonstrate how to get them running is very educational. Thanks for all the hard work. 👍💖💝💖👍🍓🍒🍎

      Well. I promise you’d be pretty pissed of the snow when have to fight with it for the half of the year, for decades. However, I understand the joy when just not have to fight with it too much. I just wait to see they’re crying of happiness when visiting Lofoten, because then there are no words able to describe the beauty of this landscape.

      @@chrismadden74 The space we put the lights in was mostly air control lines. Blowing air lines with air is sort of redundant and adding any fluids problematic. The point was to not have the space freeze in the first place. But thanks for the tips.

      There are also small wires that can go inside of pipes that can be plugged in to prevent freezing. Also, if possible, keeping the water running slightly will help to prevent freezing.

    • @Pocketfarmer1
      @Pocketfarmer1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@j.m.4045 i have seen and used wires on the outside of pipes (heat tape). Wires on the inside seams prone to problems. Keeping the water running does not work that well for boats.

    The people who live in house trailers use heat tape that wraps around the plumbing that helps prevent freezing. It's like a electric heat blanket for plumbing. Also, you really need to prevent the water from freezing around the hull. I have heard that ice can squeeze a whole in the hull. Good luck and great voyages

    • @AlotOfSunInHeaven
      @AlotOfSunInHeaven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but only really thick ice will hurt your boat. I live in Norway and have had my boat in a harbor that froze over, but because of the constant movement of the boat it rarely froze around my boat. Also most harbors in Norway are either naturally ice-free or have bubble systems keeping ice from freezing around the boats.

    A few suggestions from a cold climate liveaboard (Boston) Insulate those hatches and ports, the thin polycarbonate isnt great for keeping heat. You can cut bubble wrap to size and spray or wipe with water and the bubble wrap will stick on the plastic. We also insulate our hatches on the outside with some thin insulation under the canvas hatch covers. A doubled up towel over the hatch would probably do a lot too, but you will lose the natural light. We also cover up the companionway hatch with a towel at night, bit of insulation and helps stop drafts. When the water outside starts freezing up you could probably kick on your motor in reverse for a bit to circulate the water, only the very top layer of water will be cold enough to freeze. We use ice eaters (electric motors with a prop) hung below the boat to move the warmer water up from below. This keeps the boat from freezing in and also the thru hulls from freezing up. Blankets are key, and our diesel heater has been worth its weight in gold the past 3 winters (but Im guessing you dont want to go that route) Stay warm!

    Delightful! The attitude Kika shows regarding snow and being in winter for the first time. As a lifetime skier and perennial child at heart, I have always enjoyed the winter season. Most adults too easily migrate to negative thoughts about snow and cold - as if they had a vote or some such. Regarding the “puffy socks”, known as down booties those have been a winter backpacking item that have been around for years. A company known as Frostline (now defunct) used to sell a kit form. I made a pair in the early 70’s. To Kika: keep practicing! It is well known that native German and also French speakers have trouble with the English “th” as there is no comparable phoneme in those languages. The humor comes from years of practice without making that sound,especially in the middle or end of a word. Words come out sounding like “DD” when you know you tried to pronounce “TH”. Hence “sweater wedder”. You can do it. Notice how easily the initial “TH” is in words like this-that or then.

    While at dock, you might want to install a bubble maker around the perimeter of the hull. It keeps the water from freezing around the exterior of the hull. There is also a BUBBLER unit made for placing inside your water storage tanks. Again,it prevents ice from forming. You might want to look into one of those 'roof heater cables', the kind people us on their rooves in ordr to melt snow and ice and in this case, place the wire throughout your plumbing pipes. It won't be hot enough to damage the piping but it will be warm enough to prevent pipes from freezing.
    Just a few ideas

    I'm definitely months late, and someone may have mentioned this, but if you ever plan on wintering somewhere similarly cold again, you might want to look into pipe heater cables. They're cables that you'd wrap around any pipes that could freeze, wire it to a switch or breaker for long term (or just have on hand for short term), and the cables would provide low-level heating enough to hopefully avoid freezing. Worked for me on a copper drain line in my house that kept freezing otherwise. If done as a project, would save you from having to pull out drawers and such. Keep on enjoying the life!

    Great video guys, can't believe you are doing this. Your hearts are warm to bursting. Just a note, salt water will freeze but only after the chloride is forced out of the water, you will find the ice is salt free. I work in the Canadian Arctic and before the ice melts we would find a large puddle on top of the ice and use that as fresh water, if you were able to get a pump suction into the top of the sea water, you could pump it directly into the tanks carefully, you didn't want to get the salty water that was just inches below the fresh.

    It was great to see how you dealt with the cold weather. Sometimes when we were living on our sailboat in the winter, just getting through the day was an accomplishment. We used to put rock salt on the deck and RV antifreeze (non toxic) in the drains to keep things from freezing. I love your woodstove setup.
