Always a treat to hear some lovely music and watch some beautiful nautical craftsmanship. I continue to wish you guys the hard-standing equivalent of fair winds!
We went with cream colored Kiwigrip on our white gelcoat deck as well. I had the same initial reaction. Having lived with it for 4 years, I can say I am very happy we chose cream. It is easier on your eyes in the bright sunlight and it compliments the teak handrails and hatches. Sail-on!
IMPORTANT!! Kiwi Grip “blushes” like crazy. Once cured, be absolutely sure you scrub the decks VERY WELL with soap and water BEFORE you walk on them. They are VERY slick when wet if you don’t scrub them down. And by slick, I mean slipperier than ice. Beyond that, it’s a fantastic product. I did my Cape Dory 36 several years ago. Looks great, works great, great price. A+ product.
Yes all water based coatings are full of surfactants which need to be washed off so hose down and brush it then hose off again (will produce suds on its own no need to add more.
So happy for you guys!!!! Water is coming soon!!!! You are almost there!the attentive paint prep is always amazing as no detail is left missed! This integrity to an expert level of craftsmanship is well appreciated to watch as this kind of work is often lacking in workmanship these days. Paint is looking fabulous! Cannot wait to see the next color in the hull.
It's really coming together. I hope you don't get too stressed having to shift around in the boatyard. Beautiful music and editing as always. Thank you.
My dad used to say that 80% of boat work is the rebuild and the other 80% was the finish work! I think he was right! Getting closer and closer now to that salt water! YES!😁👍
He's absolutely right! but that only gets you to 160%, so not quite the whole way, there's another 80% tucked away in all the jobs that only become apparent once you start sailing!
Such a pleasure to see MC II nearing completion. It has been an honor to watch the progress and I am confident in saying we all look forward to splash day as much as both of you.
Through the eyes of a german Paintshop-Manager. I agree: at first sight the white and the creme colours looks a bit odd together - but: as said already in the comments it's very classic, it fits the the age and the style of your boat with all the wood and varnish and all that "real" materials. Believe me: if all will be back together again with the chrome, stainless steel, brass, the ropes and the sails - it will be SOOOO beautiful. It's a good choice, in my eyes it's the right choice. I'm sure you will love it. Much sucess with your chrunchtime and the whole project and best regards from Berlin, Germany
I built a yacht for the developer (Barry Whaley) of Kiwi Grip 22 years ago. This yacht was one of the first to have Kiwi Grip for non skid. When you google Kiwi Grip some of the deck photos are of his yacht. Having seen how great this product has performed over the last 22 years, I am serious advocate of Kiwi Grip. Great choice! Kiwi boat builder Rob.

Again Maya you have knocked it out of the park with your music choices. I know how difficult it is to match music with what you’re trying to do with the subject. Great job on the deck. I agree with the color and the teak. I’ve seen it in grey. Alodino love your detail to do a meticulous job ❤️❤️👏👏👏😀😀
Great application for the first time; it came out well. It's hard to judge the color in a covered shed with low light, unpainted decks, absent varnished handrails, etc., but I think you will like it when it all comes together. Then again, there is always the rotary sander ...
I have a 15 foot diameter Para Tech sea anchor, 275 feet of 5/8 inch double braid line, 400 feet of 3/8 inch three strand nylon line with 50 feet of galvanized chain, and an ATM Gale Sail, all of which are in dedicated sea bags and in excellent, like-new condition. These were purchased new 24 years ago, but have never been used, and have been in dry, climate controlled 0:56 storage the whole time. They belonged to one of my sailing buddies who passed away last year. His wife gave them to me for disposition. I have inspected each of them and they indeed are like new. Although this equipment would be excellent for my Rival 34, unfortunately my blue water sailing days are behind me now, so I would like to offer them to you at no cost for your Cape George 36.. If interested, let me know. I will need a shipping address in order to determine the best method of shipping and costs thereof. I have followed your channel for quite some time and enjoy watching the refit of Magic Carpet II. Let me know whether these items are something you would like to have, then we can work out the details thereafter. Best wishes, Rob Johnson S/V Tempus Fugit
I applied KiwiGrip three years ago w/o any problems ('single handed'). After drying I went over it slightly with 60 grid iot get rid of some sharp ridges to make it more barefoot friendly. Still looking like new, wonderful product.
I've used KiwiGrip twice for the decks of my 55 year old Spencer 35. I found it very easy to work with and it creates a great non-skid surface. I also took the product to my local hardware store to customize the color the first time. Second time I just bought little tubes of pigment and mixed it in my self in the cans. All was easy. But like Aladeno says careful taping and handling of tape removal is critical. Overall KiwiGrip is a great product and if you can paint reasonably well it is fine for DIY.
Love the show and so very excited to see it all coming together. I suspect the kiwi grip paint color will be less green once it's outside in the sunshine.
Excellent job on the non skid, looks first class which happens to be everything you do!! You guys quality of craftsmanship is off the charts. Cheers from Austin, TX
Oh, I remember all the issues we had with such grippy paint back 3 decades ago and then some, it was such a mess and so bad that it was barely useable. It also had to be stripped off and redone way too often as it didn't last. It was actually easier to use something like plastic film that could be cut to shape and then glued on. Sigh, how far we have come, yet so little has changed, yet it might be a lot better than the stuff I remember.
used kiwi grip too, loved it, super easy.. after like 5 years as it was getting dirty I even repaint a coat on top of the existing, no worries, looked like brain new again :)
It is Great to watch both of you at work executing your dream. It takes a special type of individual to have a dream and make it happen. The two of you compliment each other and are the perfect match. Thank you for taking the time to make these beautiful videos and inviting us along on this adventure. You give us a reason to keep on keeping on.
a really good choice, this kiwiGrip. I redid the entire deck of my boat last year with this. feedback on 1 year of use: 1. Be careful with fragile swimsuits, they stick very tightly :) 2. Be careful with your fingers when cleaning with a brush, it's as strong as sandpaper 3. very resistant: I cleaned the deck with a high-pressure cleaner, it is impeccable and it holds up perfectly. It is even the most effective because the green dirt comes off very well. (With a brush and soap, it's painful) Magnificent work
Love your project guys! I tinted my kiwi grip a nice light green. I purchased new empty paint cans, squeezed out the white product, picked a desired colour chip, and had the paint mixer mix it up! It turned out great!
It certainly looks as though it is much quicker to apply when there are two people to do it. I would have wanted the Kiwigrip to be a light cream colour, but that is just my choice. I think that yours looks just tops!
Yep! The cream is a nice color contrast and with the teak on board it will not look so.... Bold. Value added benefit is "hiding" dirt, as u mentioned... Plus, in warmer latitudes the lighter color will help keep inboard a bit cooler. The down side is that the lighter color works hard to replel/reflect most of the light spectrum which causes it to break down quicker than a darker color. All totalled I think it was an excellant color choice. Well Done!
Looks great. Best to stick with their colours. Deckote (made in Canada) in their docs suggest sticking with the original colours as well because adding "paint store" colours increases the voc off gassing. I would imagine it would be the same with kiwigrip. even though Deckote is not designed as non-stick.... well they do have such a product but it is meant to be painted over and is one part but not a direct replacement. And hey, do spend some time exploring BC once she is in the water.... I am sure there are places you have not yet seen. Will we see you out there? Anything is possible but it looks like mostly weekenders for us this year and we are not really good about seeing who all is in the anchorage.... we'll learn.
Another great watch..Thank you Wondering why you wont keep the shed until your ready to step the mast. BC is known for its RAIN ? .You would only lose a day or two rebuilding it but the weather factor reliability would surely be minimalised. Cheers
Looking good 🎉 the local hardware store had non skid sand in a milk carton container. I put the sand in a salt shaker. I was using all grip paint. Coat of primer then 1st coat of paint. The second coat I put down a 3’x3’ area of paint and then evenly shake the sand on while paint still wet. Kept going like that for the whole deck. Next day put down the final coat to seal the sand. Can still walk barefoot on it and not slippery. Must be kept clean after fish on the deck. I have been on fishing boats where the non skid is very coarse and sharp. They don’t want any one slipping. If you are wearing shorts and your knee touches the deck it can tear the skin. Kiwi grip looks good 🎉
The cream colour of Kiwigrip fits beautifully to the colour scheme of a classic boat like Magic Carpet. It reminds me of cotton sails and sunbleached teak decks. Good choice. Keep on with your fine restauration.
Can't wait until you guys get the hatches and dorade boxes refinished. Every time I see them I want to jump through the screen and grab sandpaper and varnish :)
I like the cream colour, and as you say, it generates less glare than white, that makes sailing more enjoyable during the day, but also at night. I have moulded non slip cream decks and dirt doesn't show, particularly after a rinse down.
Aladino, Maya, The KiwiGrip looks great. Nice job. FWIW, we are approaching 10 years on our KiwiGrip non-skid, and it is lasting very well. We did a second coat about six years ago. After cleaning for prep, it simply went on right over the original. The first coat was creme colored. We decided to change it up with the second coat and custom mixed up a combination of the grey and blue colors (1x1) and laid it right on top of the creme layer. The result is sort of a classic Austin-Healey roadster blue/grey tone. No problems so far, and no color bleed through. We find that the grey/blue mix color doesn't show dirt as much as the creme did. It we start to see the underlying creme layer, as it ages we will just put another coat on top. We are hopeful that the custom mix we did is simple enough that touch up won't make it look like a leopard. But it is simple enough to just lay a full coat on. While KiwiGrip is easy to work with, I think you will find that the best attribute is its longevity. Also, it can be used in a variety of ways. Ours was an oddball application in the sense that we put our boat into a dry interior space and dried out the 30-year old teak decks thoroughly over six months. Then we applied two coats of WEST System epoxy as a saturating barrier coat over that old teak. Then we applied the KiwiGrip on top of that. We essentially ended up with two cored decks - one on top of the other. The original balsa cored fiberglassed deck underlays the teak, and the somewhat worn (and dried-out) teak acts as the core for the WEST System deck, all of which was then covered with KiwiGrip. It sounds complicated, but it was a LOT cheaper than replacing the teak in kind or even just tearing the old teak off the fiberglass cored deck, then glassing it, and then putting the KiwiGrip surface coat on. Hope you will be in the water soon. We will be heading north from Friday Harbor in June, M/V Iron Wind.
Always I enjoy your wonderful music, now I feel inspired to wear a music headset while refinishing our Potter 15 for sailing on the river here in Sellwood Oregon. I've already bought products for nonskid as I made the mistake of painting with gloss (blinding in sun and slip in rain) the chicken skewer and textured roller both brilliant. Small area to test definitely not a problem😊.
Can't go wrong with kiwigrip, love it. Be careful not to leave air bubbles in the rolling process, the peaks can collapse and leave voids which collect dust...
Tip for begimers: sometime to avoid lifting the paint pull the tape 180 dgr away from its original place, right against the unlifted tape, also experiment with different angles for different products. As usual love your videos ,thanks for sharing . PS not crazy about the color but you are right white is impossible to keep clean, the most in the N.West.
Beautiful job! I did my deck with all that taping the first time, but after experiencing how easy Kiwigrip is to repair ( one pack water based + textured finish ) I realised that I was never going to need to sand it all off to recoat in the future, which seems to be the main idea behind the fancy taping. ( Is there another reason?? ). I also found it a little dangerous when I mistakenly stepped on a gap in the non skid when sailing, so I ended up using minimum tape and covering with Kiwigrip right up to the edges. It took a while to get used to the lack of that 'professional' look but it's so much faster and safer that I would never go back to the traditional masking system. You are putting so much love into your boat that you are destined to receive huge amounts of good fortune on your sailing journeys to come.
We now know that a cat has got good grip in it´s paws. Joke aside, that bit about the toothpicks was valuable advice. I like painting but almost hate the tape, it is always troublesome in one way or another. Also having that much patience when working on my boat would be nice, expecting a perfect outcome every time but that very seldom happens. Entirely my own fault, of course. Magic Carpet 2 will be a work of art when it is finished, fabulous work!
Been watching from the start. Really loving the process and seeing you guys live my dream. To bad I know nothing about sailing but I'm hoping to buy a boat by the end of this year, or the next!
The Kiwi grip looks great. It seems its texture will bring a lot of "grip", which is the goal! That said, I am feeling like you Maya. I am not much convinced with the yellow-ish color. I must say I don't like this color for boats. I prefer them white. But it's your boat, your choice so that's fine 😉 Maybe you will have yellow-ish/beige sails which will match the Kiwi grip!
As usual, beautiful craftsmanship. Lovely to see all the progress. Not sure pure white and cream coexisting on deck is a happy marriage. But if you like it, then you’ve made the right choice.
I have used Kiwigrip for 15 yrs or so I think most non skid on my old boat were that old and standing up very very well maybe some wear along side decks from sheets etc easy to redo just wash mask and roll a coat on over the old. personally I like the grey which is quite a light grey. One benefit of the limited colour range is its easy to get touchup paint. Lighter colours are best because it reduces heat buildup on the deck which can be an issue here in New Zealand.
Y'all are jamm'n! So enjoyable to see your progress . I really like your non skid coating and thank you for the information to get the tape removed before its dry and caused problems to get off. Y'all have good tastes snd that's some very good planning to cut the glare down with the creme color. There's already enough glare being on the water constantly. Love seeing your efgorts coming to fruition so beautifullu. Thank you for sharing this with so much detail.
As always, really appreciate the clear explanation of each product you guys are using. Great to the boat quickly moving toward completion at least from an exterior aesthetic viewpoint. Cheers!
I was very impressed with Kiwi grip when I rolled it on the decks of my small boat. Easy to apply and the finished result is grippy but still comfortable to walk on bare foot. Pro tip, roll slow so it doesn't throw splatters on anything and a slow roll gives you the tallest 'frosting' peaks for more grip. A fast roll will give you lower peaks that end up more like orange peel and less grip plus throw splatters.
I applied alone the grey Kiwi Grip 7 years ago ,I live in Quebec Canada and our winters can be brutal, our summers hot and humid it has performed exceptionelly well. You did a great job I would suggest two people one applying and the other roling.
Cream is the right colour. Although I get what you mean Maya; it looks more vanilla than cream. But even than; it’s a classic combination really suiting the yacht. And; don’t underestimate the glare of the sun on a all white deck. Keep up the good work!
I love that color. It almost looks like a sandy beach and then you know if you step up on the sandy beach, your feet will have great grip to the boat. Very practical! Good job!
When doing taping there is a term called courtesy where you leave a tab behind so you can find the start when pulling it. You can do something similar on overlapping taping. It makes removals so much easier.
Bootyful! I used cream color on my decks because white was blinding on sunny days. When you have all the woodwork varnished and oiled the light cream color will look much better. I stopped using masking tape years ago and only use painters tape, usually blue. It can stay on longer without hardening and I think it peels off better too for short term taping..
You two are such artistic craftsmen and a joy to follow through each design and aesthetic decision and execution. When completing the deck and rigging on my Swift Solo 14, I struggled with the type of non-skid and placement which would provide the necessary safety, yet not cover the beautiful western red cedar strip decking. I chose a combination of heavy-duty black neoprene adhesive-back non-skid for the high traffic areas under the boom and on the gunnel rails and 3M clear Safety-Walk adhesive-back non-skid for lower traffic deck area forward and port/starboard wings. If Kiwigrip had a clear product, I would have used it to preserve the wood grain aesthetics. Thank you for sharing your journey.
The cream color gives a lovely classic vibe. I think you made the right choice.

Awesome! It looks great! The cream colour looks really good for a traditional boat!
I like the colour of the anti-skid a lot … Job well done 😀😀
It is Great to watch both of you at work executing your dream. It takes a special type of individual to have a dream and make it happen. The two of you compliment each other and are the perfect match. Thank you for taking the time to make these beautiful videos and inviting us along on this adventure. You give us a reason to keep on keeping on.
Aladino PLEASE let us guy's look a bit better and do a bodge job once in a while.... Boat is becoming magic (carpet)slowly but steadily goos job guys
a really good choice, this kiwiGrip.
I redid the entire deck of my boat last year with this.
feedback on 1 year of use:
1. Be careful with fragile swimsuits, they stick very tightly :)
2. Be careful with your fingers when cleaning with a brush, it's as strong as sandpaper
3. very resistant: I cleaned the deck with a high-pressure cleaner, it is impeccable and it holds up perfectly. It is even the most effective because the green dirt comes off very well. (With a brush and soap, it's painful)
Magnificent work
Love your project guys!
Spectacular !!
I think you made the right call with the cream non-skid. Once all the teak trim is in place, its going to look really nice. I love this channel!
We like the kiwi grip color you chose. Classic. Reminds me of ‘Hatteras Off-White’ by …?Interlux.
Great teamwork, fine progress, positive vibe …. 👌🏽 🎉😊
Well Done!
I love the kiwi Color, Give Magic Carpet a nice Vintage look
Nothing better than a deadline to get work done .
The color looks fantastic.
I worry it might be hot in the bright sun. White is cooler to the feet..
Cheers
1 - it wasn't me who walked on it 😸
2 - how did one of my cousins even get up there ? to walk on it 😹😸😺
Happy Caturday you 2 😻😸😺
Looking good 🎉 the local hardware store had non skid sand in a milk carton container. Kiwi grip looks good 🎉
In Norway, the yellow masking tape is for indoor use, and we got a light blue one for outdoor use, and it is a lot more moisture resistant.
It's great to see your enthusiasm and joy as Magic Carpet 2's exterior nears completion. The detail and quality of your work is outstanding ♥️
The cream colour of Kiwigrip fits beautifully to the colour scheme of a classic boat like Magic Carpet. It reminds me of cotton sails and sunbleached teak decks. Good choice. Keep on with your fine restauration.
An all white deck would have been rather stark.
Can't wait until you guys get the hatches and dorade boxes refinished. Every time I see them I want to jump through the screen and grab sandpaper and varnish :)
I would have preferred white!
Let's see later .thanks for a lovely video.❤
I love the cream and the white together. I hope Maya comes to love it. Good choice on skipping the blue.
So nice from you to think about the Dutch, and delivering this episode around pizza time! I can tell you, they go very good together!
Good to see your skill and effort to produce a good result, both of you!
Great music !! Phil 🇬🇧
Tan/cream decks on boats are a nice nod the old boats with canvas decks. It looks really good.
Hi Guys, looks spiffy 🙂
Happy to see you soon on the water.
Greets from Switzerland
🤣 I keep forgetting, what was that ocean Switzerland is on again? Greets from the Netherlands😜😘
Great music and a pleasure watching the progress being made.
I'm glad that your projects are coming together --my project otoh-- another story for another day.
Definitely lovely cream colour
Perfect for a classic hull with wood
Cheers
Keep doing the fantastic job, guys! Greetings from Italy!
Great episode! Stunning how a coat of paint, can transform a boat you sit here thinking will never get done. Enjoyed this, thanks guys x
The Kiwi grip is looking awesome guys! I'm glad to have this little demo to reference for when I get around to doing my decks someday! Great Work!
I think it is beautiful. The cream color sets off the white and the design you have created with the tape. I LOVE IT!!!!
Loving all the uploads but the cosmetic stuff is SO satisfying❤
Good choice. The cream color is just beautiful. Gut gemacht!
But it's your boat, your choice so that's fine 😉
Maybe you will have yellow-ish/beige sails which will match the Kiwi grip!
The Kiwi Grip looks great!
The Kiwigrip color looks fine. Maybe not so much now but it will look better when everything is reinstalled on the deck. Awesome
Great episode. Maya, loved the background tunes for this one but nothing compared to your original tunes! Cheers, Bill from Boston
In direct sunlight , I think, even that off-white will be super bright.
I sympathize with Maya's doubts about the Kiwigrip color. But sure you'll get used to it.
I applied alone the grey Kiwi Grip 7 years ago ,I live in Quebec Canada and our winters can be brutal, our summers hot and humid it has performed exceptionelly well. You did a great job I would suggest two people one applying and the other roling.
Which color code of the grey did you use?
Ahhh, looking at the completed house top, it looks just the cream which I would have chosen. Will you use Kiwigrip on the decks as well?
Awesome work guys! The boat looks beautiful!
Love both your talents. I agree with Maya the warmth of the kiwigrip will work with glow from the finished teak. 👍
What a thrill to meet the couple behind the boat recently. Truly delightful and generous of their time for this fanboy.
I like the cream non-skid. It's a nice contrast, but not too contrasty. And as you said, will help to keep the boat looking clean.
