They make it so complicated because they need an easy way to shut down sailors that cause problems. If your out on the open water, just know that we live in a very small world. An American being rude to a waiter while in another part of the world can start the process of shutting you down. You will start to notice yourself getting cancelled. The best way to steer clear of any problems is not drink alcohol while out in public and be nice to everyone even if they are being rude to you. Always keep your phone on you, and know the recorders are always on. If you need to drink alcohol only do it while on your vessel. Otherwise, people need to remember that most people are not going to be happy that your a wealthy American with a yacht or boat.
If they were REASONABLE taxes, no one would bother dodging them. How is it reasonable to tax someone $100,000 on a boat that has never even been to your government’s territorial waters?!? Just because the people who own the boat still call Texas our “home port” doesn’t mean the boat has to call it home. Taxes are supposed to fund benefits for people in the locality that does the taxing. Curiosity may never end its entire existence be within sight of USA or Texan waters. Anyway, I don’t know why I’m trying to bother to explain reality to someone on the Internet. Have a nice life. 😝 I shall go sailing in Texas! ⛵️🌅
@@ckeilahI would kind of agree with you if they registered it in a place they do sail but thry haven't even been to the Marshall Islands. It's a tax dodge, plain and simple. You can think that's a good thing if you want but if we hold others to tax-dodging rebuke, we should hold everyone accountable. Everything else is just cope. Be well.
Every action has consequences. Sure they might be saving money, but now their vessel is registered to a country that has a government that will more than likely never respond to them if they need help. Again, all the laws are complicated and put into place as a way of ultimately having control over one’s property if they break laws, cause problems, and so on. People need to be very careful, all the people that control the waters are sitting at home, many are watching as everyone is living their dream of sailing the world. Something they can never afford. You don’t want to get cancelled because you were drunk in public or rude to a shitty waiter.
This is the only time I've seen a sailing channel address this issue. Just as important you mentioned having a CPA and Tax Attorney on board so to speak. That's a first too. Thanks!
Because not many new foreign boat builds. Most people buy a boat already built and registered. VERY few people face this, including most people buying sailboats. When you go to a boat show or a dealer and buy a boat it’s already registered. As soon as that boat comes into the country to a dealer or to a boat show all of that has been done. For most people, the question is not what country to register the boat but what state. John Kerry got busted for this because he has a yacht that he keeps registered in a different state to avoid paying sales taxes. It’s also in another state that has lower insurance and lower annual property taxes. But of course he wants your tax dollars to pay for a war that’s not needed that America started in Ukraine and lots of other bullshit! Typical liberal hypocrisy. They will avoid taxes anyway they can but they want you to be taxed to pay for all the crap that they like.

Do you own a house? A boat is not much different. A bit, yes, because you're traveling between countries but on the other hand, you don't have to deal with HOAs... ;-)
It's really only complicated if outside the US. If you are American and only sail around America, which is what probably 98 percent of American sail boat owners do, then it's no more complicated than owning any other boat or camper/RV, etc.
@@nedhill1242 but then you have either to deal with importing the boat or have it done by a local agent. Both of which are going to add quite a bit of cost to the boat. Yes, you have an amazing ability of storytelling that can make any subject interesting! I wasn’t really questioning why you registered in Bikini, but good to know!
Very cool, I was very curious about why you flagged your boat in the Marshall Islands. Now I understand. There is a lot more to cruising than most of us realized. Thanks for taking me along again! 😊
Thanks for the info! Super helpful; I always wondered how that worked. I would LOVE an episode on your electronics setup (eg B&G, Autopilots, AIS, Radar, VHFs, Jason’s big screen at the nav desk, etc)… so many choices it would be great to see how you made your choices and how it all is integrated (or not).
The other factor to consider is that many insurers are dropping multihulls altogether as they trim their risk profiles in response to extreme weather events etc. We asked five insurers for quotes on multihulls insurance and only one even replied, and even the previous insurer of the boat was happy to get it off their books despite us having no claims ever. So getting a flag that increases your chances of even getting insurance is a really big deal!!!
Not buying a boat. Not even a sailor. I have been on cruise ships and water ferries and a few cabin cruisers on a lake. I am curious about why and how people do what they do. I am mobility challenged now, all my life but only past 15 yrs I need walking aids, 2 canes now. I used to hike, repel, snow ski and back in school I even ran track. I haven't "missed out" at all. I have found great joy in watching Nikki and Jason and two other sailing families. Great wholesome (except these two and all the caulking innuendoes' 🤣) I am grateful for this platform, where many extremely talented and/or motivating people share a part of their life. As travel has become very challenging, this is a good alternative,
Thank you Nikky & Jason, another great video this week about maritime laws registration boat with terms that depend on the business and the seas you are traveling to. You made this report video interestingly enough without loosing yourself in legalese details. Sailing is not easy and living on a catamaran is really special. Cruising lifestyle is much more than a dream....
Very interesting video- also, Nicky your hair is looking fabulous at this length, I love it 🥰 Have a wonderful week guys and I can’t wait to see where you’re taking us next week ❤

Good to see you both. Unfortunately, I’m not a boat owner and am only able to vicariously venture out onto the waters on Sunday mornings. But, it was an interesting video. You both take care. See you next week.
Just learning from your travels and ownership certainly helps me to understand how to avoid troubles when I decide to become a owner of a beautiful vessel like yours. Thank you for showing everything that you experience it is truly incredible and insightful not to mention inspiring!!
I love tagging along on your adventures. I will probably never use your insurance info, but will pass it on if the occasion arrives. See you on the next one.

I really enjoyed this. I've often wondered if y'all would do some 'How-Tos' for regular stuff around the boat like how to tack with a jib, or when to deploy the spinnaker, or how to maintain cell phones (eSim/iSim) and comms, etc, etc. Jason does a great job with explaining all the broken/fixit stuff, but with this new vessel, fingers crossed, there won't be too much of that stuff...so a how-to like this is FANtastic. Thx for all you do, showing us noobs & groms the way. Jason got the dishwasher, I think Nikki needs another cat 🐈 😊 or some sorta liveaboard mascot, which is very good for the algorithm, right ;)
Oh wow I'm excited!! Just looked up your position 2pm may 21st, and you are right off the beach of my wifes home. An hour or 2 ahead of you, Campomanes Bay is a stunning anchorage, hope you are heading there for the night. You will enjoy beautiful sunrise coming up over island there. Guess I'll see in future video.
Huge Kudo's! I've never seen this presented coherently anywhere else. Super helpful to know. Let's face it, having a Bikini on the back of your boat is cool, but understanding the implications and cost trade-offs is priceless.
Thank you, thank you, thank, you for this post...I just purchased a 60 foot cat...and my transfer of ownership is taking forever thru the Coast Guard.....very pertinent information for me!!!!....:)...
Has certainly opened my eyes to the complexities of owning an ocean faring vessel..It was really enlightening to get a plain language explanation of most of the vagueness in regards to the flagging and insurance..And, was, as usual, very entertaining!
Figured there would be questions about your Bikini registration. I guessed insurance would be one answer and you filled in the blanks very clearly. Love following both of you. Fair winds and wonderful adventures!
Interesting about insurance, isnt it? Almost like you have to get insurance on your insurance! I mean! Tax and twist the short hairs, they got us! Lol. Btw..I am old sailor and follow several channels for my "fix" of the sea. I want to say, of all the new builds, refurbs and such these last months, yours has appeared to be the most sucessful and "undramatic"! I also think you have chosen the perfect vessel, it's beautiful and functional w/o the complexities that require an engineer on board. You done good!!! 😊 😅
You guys always do an exceptional job in making it entertaining. I do agree that it seems like your videos go by so fast. I know, we are very "curious" fans that want more, more more. Some really great info on this one for sure... Love u guys,,,, Mostly Nicky, mostly..
Very informative! A bunch of great info we didn't know we needed but very much needed to know. We hope to be in the market in the next six months. Thank you Wynns for great content.
Jason must have had a BERY long talk with your lawyer because he started the talk clean shaven and had a good growth by the end but was still in the same shirt! Very informative video. I’ve seen soooooo many Delaware registered boats in Turkey!
Looking good Eugene! 😉 We're registered to the Marshall Islands as well - people either get a giggle and think it's a joke when they see the home port is Bikini or they think the boat name is "Liger Bikini". The register themselves have been excellent to work with, we go through the Swiss office and they've been extremely helpful.
We appreciated and loved this video! You have another one where you break down costs and we've watched it multiple times trying to build our own savings plan for a cruising adventure. When you gave the insurance figures, we immediately zeroed in on this being lower than your previous video so we updated our spreadsheet. Given all of your experience at sea these past few years, it would be great if you revisited that videos (but this time also calling out boat depreciation). It's super helpful just to have any idea what the cost is going to be! Also, I don't think whether you confirmed it was a requirement that you put the word "Bikini" on the boat due to registering the boat in the Marshall Islands? That part was unclear.
When you register a yacht you must select a home port for that registration. For the Marshall Islands the home port for yachts can be either Bikini or Jaluit.
Very interesting. As a land based creature, I am curious to know how much insurance costs (rough range is fine) and what does it cover? My wife and I retired. In an abundance of caution, we got our home owners insurance reviewed and ensured we had replacement value coverage. Home is the bulk of our net worth and now retired it was essential we did not lose it. OMG, was that a good move. My next door neighbor replaced their home with a bigger one. In the process they managed to mess up our property. Our insurance has been working for 5 years and $millions to fix it. The replacement value rider forced them to restore even though it was a tough job. Whew!
I stayed through the whole video even though I don't have a boat cuz you guys are interesting and fun to watch. far ahead of the travel channels that are just a cycle of lunch, happy hour, dinner, and the late night bar scene
I'm watching from central Florida. I'm not planning on buying a boat, I can't swim, and I can't find anyone else who talks about boat insurance which makes the subject informative; I wouldn't say I like water, but I still find your videos entertaining.
I'm from the Marshall islands and every time I've been at dock I noticed so many RMI flags and always ask why but this video answered all my questions. Thank you guys I love all the videos.
After a long research we registered our boat in BVi, after purchasing her in Croatia....however Cruising permit is not required in USVI and Puerto Rico according to port Authority from USVI. Cruising in USVI as we speak.

One thing that comes under the "taxes" banner is the increased US tariffs on Chinese built luxury items. I heard about it during an ASA class.
What is the US tariff on Chinese boats? Is it 25% like many other products?
Very cool, I was very curious about why you flagged your boat in the Marshall Islands. Now I understand. There is a lot more to cruising than most of us realized.
Thanks for taking me along again! 😊
The back end of your boat is awesome.
Goodmorning guys, Sundays are ways better with you.
I totally agree 😍
The other factor to consider is that many insurers are dropping multihulls altogether as they trim their risk profiles in response to extreme weather events etc. We asked five insurers for quotes on multihulls insurance and only one even replied, and even the previous insurer of the boat was happy to get it off their books despite us having no claims ever. So getting a flag that increases your chances of even getting insurance is a really big deal!!!
Wow, that makes complete sense! Thanks for explaining in detail, it was interesting.
As travel has become very challenging, this is a good alternative,
Very interesting topic that rarely gets covered! Thank you!
Your editing is superb. The blending between speakers is SEAMLESS!!! well done. Well done. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
This was fantastic. I’ll be coming back to this (and using your attorney) when the time comes!
This video is exactly why I watch you two. Great job! There are so many great nuggets of information here.
Thank you! This was a great overview of some questions I’ve always had!! Great vid! Also, great curls Jason! :)
Very interesting video- also, Nicky your hair is looking fabulous at this length, I love it 🥰 Have a wonderful week guys and I can’t wait to see where you’re taking us next week ❤
Wow very good information. Thank you so much. My buddy has been a sailor his whole life and will be retiring in a few years and wants to sail around the world. I sent him this video. Thank you. I just wanted to say I've been following you 2 for years now. Stay safe and I love your boat
I'm currently building my retirement plan (buying a cat, and sailing) and this was INCREDIBLY helpful! btw- I already subscribe to your channel, but this video took me from "entertained" to "helping my plans" Thank you so much, from Washington DC :)
You guys always brighten my day! Thanks also for all the great information ❤
Great explanation. This illustrates the complications of blue water sailing, and the many decisions yo face. Thank you.
Interesting , Thank You . I agree so many things to know and remember, and NOT covered Anywhere else.
Great video FOLKS!! Always a pleasure to see your vlog on a weekly basis! Been a follower and fan since the VW van days!! Greetings from the shores of Lake Huron, Ontario!! Safe travels!! BTW Nikki!! As I remember, you were a beautician many years ago!! See what you can do with your better half's "BEDHEAD"!! Stay safe and thanks for your ongoing efforts!! GIDDYUP!!
Awesome. Ohhh I had no idea. Thank you both for sharing all of these fun facts (lol) and keeping us informed.
SUPER important information. THANKS FOR SHARING, INCLUDING YOUR ATTORNEY AND INSURANCE PERSON.
I fast forwarded... not planning on buying a yacht, but watch your video's. Very informative for those who are...
Another great video. Sundays with the Wynns are always enjoyable.
Huge Kudo's! I've never seen this presented coherently anywhere else. Super helpful to know. Let's face it, having a Bikini on the back of your boat is cool, but understanding the implications and cost trade-offs is priceless.
"We picked up our boat in Asia and we plan on cruising here for at least a couple years." Excellent.
Warm winds and safe travels hello from Florida namaste 🙏 ❤️
New subscriber sends Greetings from Tucson, Arizona..
super video !! Love to watch you but sometimes living in landlocked Switzerland I get extremely JEALOUS 🤩🤩🤩😘
You did an exceptional job of making this entertaining.
Thank you, thank you, thank, you for this post...I just purchased a 60 foot cat...and my transfer of ownership is taking forever thru the Coast Guard.....very pertinent information for me!!!!....:)...
I love how neat and clean your boat is!
I have zero intention of buying a boat, or doing what you do. However, I find your videos very informative and interesting. Great job!
Your yacht looks beautiful on the water. Love the episode, good detail
This is exactly the kind of episodes I look for. Thank you.
This is the behind the scenes information that is fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
Whew!
Fascinating, and you did a wonderful job of explaining the nuances.
I was curious about this, thanks for the info!
I'm amazed at your internet speeds when you were video conferencing with the attorney. Maybe an episode on how that works, speeds, cost, etc.?
You nailed it! We watched until the end because we are buying a boat. We found it very informative. Thanks :)
I stayed through the whole video even though I don't have a boat cuz you guys are interesting and fun to watch. far ahead of the travel channels that are just a cycle of lunch, happy hour, dinner, and the late night bar scene
Thank you for this episode ❤.
I'm watching from central Florida. I'm not planning on buying a boat, I can't swim, and I can't find anyone else who talks about boat insurance which makes the subject informative; I wouldn't say I like water, but I still find your videos entertaining.
Thankyou so much! These were questions that I wished to ask; but did not know where to begin
I'm from the Marshall islands and every time I've been at dock I noticed so many RMI flags and always ask why but this video answered all my questions. Thank you guys I love all the videos.
Very interesting to learn about flagging country selection. Thanks.
Perfect timing.... been going through Insurance @#$# for a few years for our 2017 FP Helia. Time to re doc I think,
You guys make anything entertaining. Happy sailing 😊
This is definitely a save in the folder called "Buying a sailboat". Extremely important. Thank you. Happy Sailing ⛵
You did an exceptional job of making it entertaining, as always!
After a long research we registered our boat in BVi, after purchasing her in Croatia....however Cruising permit is not required in USVI and Puerto Rico according to port Authority from USVI. Cruising in USVI as we speak.
I've been hooked as a fan for years , and you are still interesting and entertaining !
Amazing topic. Keep up the good work. Love to see where you sail next. God bless you and love you guys
great intro to these topics. great episode. tks
I enjoyed the information and education you gave us. Wow, it was an eye-opener, even though I don't plan to buy a boat right now.
