Has it really been 18 years? My dad spent a good portion of his paycheck buying me this masterpiece of a game when i was a kid and i remember my grandmother chuckling at the sounds link would make while spurring epona. They've both moved on from this earth along with many other family and friends. Games like this made my time growing up in the 90's a great joy. As a 30 year old man i recently purchased a 3DS just for this game; and for brief beautiful moments, i'm back there again.
Juses Crust Nintendo hasn't fallen one bit in my opinion. All the Zelda games since OoT have been great (with the exception of Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks) and all their other series have been doing really good as well. If anything, I would say Nintendo is making a grand comeback what with the improving sales for the Wii U and 3DS thanks to games such as Smash Bros. Some people disliked Skyward Sword, but I honestly cannot see why. The Zelda series is one that in my honest opinion, only keeps getting better and better. With Zelda U and Majora's Mask 3D coming out next year, Nintendo's future looks good.

Why is everybody bitching about about this game getting a 0.5 lower score than the original?? This getting a 9.5 in 2011 is actually MORE impressive then it getting a 10 in 1998. Why you ask?? this game made me a fan of the Zelda series, I eventually ordered the original N64 version months after playing this version. I still play both up to this day, I never get bored with it.

I understand where you are coming from. Although later in the game, there are faster travel options. (You can receive a horse once you become an adult which speeds up travel on the field about 5x, and you will receive about six songs that allow you to fast travel between various locations) But yes, the field is fairly simplistic, although I still find it small. It only takes a few minutes to run from one end to the other.

Hope i get myself a 3DS soon because i am so curious about this game now :D I have heard they changed the graphic and some details *_*. And sorry for my bad english...
Should I get a 3DS with this game or a Wii U with Wind waker HD? Hard choice though you can get all kinds of games from the e-shop. I wanted to play some Wind waker and Zelda master collection games on my old gamecube but turns out it's dead.
i would say the wii u with wind waker, i just finished wind waker and it was so beautiful, the graphics are outstanding and the controls are more comfortable. Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda honestly i would recommend getting it
I advice you to get a Nintendo 3DS because the Wii-U kinda sucks. Trust me, my brother haves one and its not that great as most people thought it would turn out to be.
Ocarina of Time is considered the best game ever by many gamers. If you want to call your self a true gamer, get Ocarina of Time. It is awesome and better than A Link Between World because it is in 3D and has alot of variety. Although your other option is good too. It adds a bigger challenge than usual and uses the 3D well suprisingly.
lCreepersRevengel A Link to the Past is ALSO considered to be the best games ever by a lot of OLDER gamers. If you want to call yourself a true gamer, get A Link Between Worlds.
You're right, I feel the same way. Games like this just don't age. Or rather: they're able to while retaining their gaming quality. "Enhancing" elements isn't always needed, sometimes even not wanted.
Every video game media outlet whose ever made a top 100 games of all time list has this game in the top 5. When it came out everyone said this is the first game that is perfect. 10 years later they still rank it in the top 5 if that doesn't convince you nothing will
I agree, i think those games had really compelling story lines and left gamers truly enthralled and emerged in the gameplay, while some games today do manage to recreate that feel most of them just absolutely go lazy on the story and they go all out on the multiplayer which i feel is truly a disgrace.
How the heck can this game be more expensive than A Link Between Worlds? This was a launch title back in 2011. Man collectors suck with the way they cause game prices to go up.
The spider boss is in the first dungeon, so you can kill it easily, don't worry about that! However, there are tons of OTHER spiders in the game, like the Golden Skulltullas, and you have to kill them for bonus items (like a bigger wallet). Anyway, the gameplay does not feel dated at all, it's fantastic. I have played this on n64, three times, and two times on the 3ds, and the 3ds version is the best version of this game. It is really worth a try. A must for Zelda fans.
Everyone gonna hate me, but i dont think this game holds up worth shit. I didmt play this game when it came out cuz i was young, im only 15. And this game feels soooooo dated and boring i cant finish it. I feel Twilight Princess and Windwaker are much better games than this. I wanted to like this game i swear but i cant come to bring myself to playing it. Same problem i had with Skyward Sword.
heh, when i played this game 10 years ago, i was majorly disappointed. i saw everyone ranting and raving about this being the best and most definitive version of zelda, and just couldn't understand how everyone was loving this game so much.
belac madas What does enjoying it more than games with better graphics half to do with anything? I just dont enjoy it cuz the game design feels so outdated and i get bored so easily.
Ocarina of Time 3D is awesome, even if you didn't play Ocarina of Time back in 1998. I know because even though I had an N64 as a kid, I never played Ocarina of Time as a kid. I've heard about the praise Ocarina of Time got somewhere in the late '00s and when I got Ocarina of Time 3D for my 3DS in 2013, (I know, i was kinda late) I've spend countless hours on countless playthroughs cause it's just that damn good.
+Alucard8319 what are you smoking? The 3Ds has better graphics, jyroscope controls, an extra button, the ocarina has its own button, i found myself in the n64 version waiting for the text to actually move, the iron boots is an item, the water temple has lines to show you where to change the level now let's see your side of the argument oh wait you don't have one
Phantomango I'm gonna copy paste a reply I did a few minutes ago: Let me see... Different reviewer... The game isn't revolutionary anymore by today's standards... It's just the same game with better graphics and the gyroscope thing... 9.5 is an awesome score, specially for such an old game, it means it has aged really well.
Coming from a person who only played this game after wind waker, skyward sword, and twilight princess...this game feels horribly out dated. I don't care if it's the most innovative zelda title there ever was, it's design has been improved upon by future titles in every conceivable way. Are people really serious that it's the best game ever? are you saying that (hypothetically) if twilight princess released the same year as ocarina of time, people would still enjoy ocarina of time more? I'm calling bullshit on that one...
Coming from someone who played this when it was new. I can see why you would say that... About the console ports, that is. With the updated graphics and the fact that it is PORTABLE, I can't understand what you mean. Name another handheld game that's more "up-to-date" than this.
PrimeVinyl Ok, but those are all recent games on the same system. Also, I would argue that they aren't better, they're equal in quality. Also, the fact that you listed the top rated games for that system is a good sign for majora's mask 3d.
***** half life came out the same year and that game still is pretty good aside from the graphics, mario games still good, etc. tons of old games hold up fine.
They all have pretty independent stories, so you can play them in almost any order. Majora's Mask is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time and the two on the DS are sequels to Wind Waker. Also, Twilight Princess isn't a direct sequel, but does take a lot of inspiration from Ocarina of Time. A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Wind Waker are all good starting points and everybody's favorites are usually one of those three.
I am 18 right now so I can't say I have had the pleasure of growing up with these great Zelda games. I got into them recently and they are awesome! I finished Skyward Sword and am currently playing Ocarina on my 3DS. Can't wait to try more!
I love how that in over ten years, this game(talking about how it is similar people) has gone from a perfect ten to a 9.5 . Un-freakin believable, I going to get it right now.
The first three sentences from your comment fit the FP Zelda perfectly. I think deep down you agree with me. Throw in full, well casted, voice acting and a full open Hyrule world, and we will have a master piece in the making. Again, those first three sentences of yours were very inspiring. I like your vision.
Different times equal different expectations for what a game should be. Though Oot is a masterpiece, it would be unfair to give it a ten based on the fact that it got a ten ___ amount of years ago.
Ocarina of Time was my very first Zelda game. Even if was born 3 years after its release. I started playing this when I was 4, and I had my big sis do most of the dungeons for me. ;) but when I saw the commercial for this, I HAD to get it!! But I didn't get a 2DS until, like, 2 months ago. And I hadn't considered getting until now. But now I'm so excited to get it! :DDDD
Well I just bought a 3DS, Mario Kart 7, Zelda OOT 3D and Resident Evil Revelations for $249 total on Amazon, gets here Friday, totally stoked on it man. The 3DS reminds me of the awesomeness that the N64 brought to the table.
In my opinion Skyward sword. Its quite the challenge, the worlds are beautiful, and its a welcomed setting change from the usual Hyrule Kingdom. But don't be fooled, they're both great.
Hi Just a question, do you believe that that giroscope problem could be addressed with the new eye tracking that the new 3ds has ? I mean, it would be fun to move the device to aim. Thank you for sharing the great review!
When I was a kid, I had to share my games with My 2 siblings but this was my FIRST game that I had to my self and it will always have its spot in my heart.
Speak of gameplay not feeling dated... I havent felt that ANY zelda gameplay for any of its game been outdated. Heck even A link of the past feels just as fresh now as it did long ago. Its just amazing how much great work went into each and every zelda game.
It is so cool how we needed a big console just to play this game but now we only need a small device to play it all it is soo cool to see how the world changes
I'm just wondering... with the "new" 3ds, is there any changes to the button layout and or changing camera angles with the addition of the c stick and new buttons on the back??
i have heard people reference this games magnitude and validity; i played it myself and didn't put in the time to get that far but what i observed that i liked was it's nintendo it's somewhat open world sort of a role playing game and there is a universe involved; the game was offered at gamestop
I was a Nintendo guy, then I got a PS1 and became a Sony guy so when N64 came out, I didn't get all that excited. I played OoT a few years later on a buddies old N64 in college and thought it was alright. I didn't give much thought to getting it on 3DS until I saw it for cheap online, so I ordered it on a whim. It's taking forever to get here, and for some reason I am more excited than I've been in a long time for a video game. I'm hoping I can get more into it this time around.

Yeah, while it was awesome to play the game again, it shows how far Nintendo has fallen.

Lat3ksi Get the 3ds...with this game...because IT'S MANDATORY!
I advice you to get a Nintendo 3DS because the Wii-U kinda sucks. Trust me, my brother haves one and its not that great as most people thought it would turn out to be.
Keyatta Brooks kinda? It totally sucks.
it fucking pisses me off they don't sell this game in stores anymore, now i have to wait till idek to order it online
bought this game today and it is really something special. from now on it will always have a special place in my heart
"is the definitive version"
got a lower score than the the original. ha
Please remake this for Switch 🙏🙏🙏
A remake in botw engine would be cool
Should i buy this game or a link between worlds? Stumped between which one, havent owned a zelda game before.
Ocarina of Time is considered the best game ever by many gamers. If you want to call your self a true gamer, get Ocarina of Time. It is awesome and better than A Link Between World because it is in 3D and has alot of variety. Although your other option is good too. It adds a bigger challenge than usual and uses the 3D well suprisingly.
lCreepersRevengel
A Link to the Past is ALSO considered to be the best games ever by a lot of OLDER gamers. If you want to call yourself a true gamer, get A Link Between Worlds.
A Link Between Worlds would be a great start! I Absolutely love that game.
if you have a wii, you can buy ocarina of time on the marketplace for 10 dollars, thats how i play it
Brett Organ Ocarina Of Time is MANDATORY. So go get it, NOW!
You're right, I feel the same way. Games like this just don't age. Or rather: they're able to while retaining their gaming quality. "Enhancing" elements isn't always needed, sometimes even not wanted.
i want them to make a game using the ocarina of time and Majoras mask engine, and make it on the 3ds and a complete new story and puzzles
***** They weren't run on the same engine as their originals lol.
I was thinking the same thing it would be great to see a good new installment on the classic 3d Zelda's.
I am going to buy it tomorrow on eshop!!!
I never played a Zelda game before so should I buy this or another Zelda game
You should definitely buy this, considering it is $20 now on the nintendo store
Pros:
Classic gameplay
Faithful Remake
Good Graphics
Strong Extras
Cons:..........
9.5/10
Seems legit...
wow ... has it been already 5 years since I bought this game? :o
2018, anyone still playing??
I know there's already been a million comments already but seriously IGN 10/10 is too low for this game
Dejawolfs You are the first person ever, I think, to say this!:) hehe
For me its the best Zelda, ever! Alttp and Albw are 2 and 3 on my top-list!:)
just played it a week ago and still enjoy it more than many games with better graphics. i feel like i've been missing out all my life
belac madas What does enjoying it more than games with better graphics half to do with anything? I just dont enjoy it cuz the game design feels so outdated and i get bored so easily.
then tough stuff
For someone who has not played the game (I didn't have an N64), having it ported for The 3DS gives a chance to play this classic!
+Spidertendo 64 you're lucky you got to grow up with the n64. i wish i could have!
N64 still the better version at the end
+Alucard8319 not at all it was the original one but definitely not the better one
Too many positive reactions.
9.5/10
- IGN
IGN Logic
3DS: Definitive edition 9.5
N64: Second class version 10
Why.. just why
All credibility to these guys was just lost.
Phantomango I'm gonna copy paste a reply I did a few minutes ago:
Let me see... Different reviewer... The game isn't revolutionary anymore by today's standards... It's just the same game with better graphics and the gyroscope thing... 9.5 is an awesome score, specially for such an old game, it means it has aged really well.
He mentioned he's missing some minor adjustements from the new 3D version, like no flat stairs anymore. I guess that's why.
Am I the only one who liked the water temple
No
+Mighty the Armidillo Yes
No, but I like the ice cavern too.
Nope I love the water temple too
This game is why I brought a 3ds n after I beat it I return my 3ds lol I know i m a fan boy
It wasn't out then
There's a shit ton of great games on the 3ds so I think it was a bad call returning it
I know I got the vita n its shit no games just gravity rush just thinking of trading it in 4 a 3dsxl
Vita
stonergamer davis I traded in my Vita for a 3DS XL they were so friendly that they gave me a charger for free. :)
OoT is the best
Just picked this up I cant believe it took so long to replay my favorite game from my childhood
***** pokemon, fire emblem, mario 3d land, smash bros, monster hunter, and even some vita games like freedom wars and killzone mercenary...
PrimeVinyl
Ok, but those are all recent games on the same system.
DRM Sparkles It is the first Zelda to introduce new stuff that would show up in the future games.
Amazing game. Still have it for the N64, but needed it for my 3DS as well. I'm not disappointed in the slightest. They did a great job on this.
just due to the sometimes awkwardness of the inventory and gyroscope. Also he thought that some of the graphics could have been redone a bit more.
I think it was because the 3D messed up with the gyroscope, and the on-screen buttons made some item use a little awkward.
I'm on master quest trying to find all gold skulltals. I'm at the shadow temple that scares me so much and the bottom of the well so scary.
The thing that suprised me the most is how real links bedroom is
Different times equal different expectations for what a game should be.
:DDDD
Julie Hershberger you got a nice sis ^^...And...run! Go get this masterpiece now, before it's too late! This game is mandatory in your library!
Well I just bought a 3DS, Mario Kart 7, Zelda OOT 3D and Resident Evil Revelations for $249 total on Amazon, gets here Friday, totally stoked on it man. The 3DS reminds me of the awesomeness that the N64 brought to the table.
Jeez, 7 years ago I played the 3ds version, my mom picked it up and it is forever in my hearts.
at 1:23 why is Adult Link in Dodongo's Cavern?
do you actually have to blow into the 3ds mic for this game to work?
doit86 I don't think so
doit86 hahaha never
doit86 You do on Phantom Hour Glass and Spirit Tracks
I would recommend this to those of you who haven't played a LoZ game before, this game made the childhood for millions of us.
I'm planning in getting my first Zelda game for Christmas. Should I get this or Skyward Sword.
I'd say get this if you already have a 3DS and get Skyward Sword too for they are both really fun games!
In my opinion Skyward sword. Its quite the challenge, the worlds are beautiful, and its a welcomed setting change from the usual Hyrule Kingdom. But don't be fooled, they're both great.
A lot of Zelda fans hated Skyward Sword but I personally loved every second of it! The cutscenes and characters were amazing. I also loved the music.
i loved skyward sword, it hooks you instantly. The only think is that it's a little too easy.
I found it to be pretty challenging
Hi
Just a question, do you believe that that giroscope problem could be addressed with the new eye tracking that the new 3ds has ? I mean, it would be fun to move the device to aim. Thank you for sharing the great review!
This game on the 3D XL is amazing...my first game ever and still my number one game of all time!!!
I'm about to buy the 3ds, is it worth it for this game and more?
When I was a kid, I had to share my games with My 2 siblings but this was my FIRST game that I had to my self and it will always have its spot in my heart.
So many memories of playing the original on N64 with my great grandpa. Can't wait to get this version now that I have a 3DS.
I have the master quest for Game Cube and the Zelda collection for Game Cube.
Still the highest rated 3DS game on Metacritic. Can't wait to start it tonight for the first time.
Thwompthing hope you have a blast like i did
i have heard people reference this games magnitude and validity; i played it myself and didn't put in the time to get that far but what i observed that i liked was it's nintendo it's somewhat open world sort of a role playing game and there is a universe involved; the game was offered at gamestop
I find that the gyroscope problem is not an issue if you have a new 3ds since they have face tracking
Majoras mask 3D or ocarina of time 3D which one should I get
Im getting majors mask soon but ill say oot and then majors mask
Thanks
+Josh Ortiz ocarina is a great one for beginners an newcomers to zelda
Josh Ortiz (i know this is one year old)while I'm a Majoras Mask fanboy, get Ocarina of time, you can get Majoras Mask later.
Both honestly, you wont regret it
