- Season 5 Episode 1
This season of Legendary Adventures Podcast is all about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. Each episode will explore a dungeon, and my gameplay leading up to that dungeon. Then we'll take a look at the game world, and the legacy of Ocarina of Time. In this first episode of Season Five, we're looking at the development of the game. The developers say it was challenging, but it resulted in one of the most influential video games ever made.
Legendary Adventures is a Legend of Zelda playthrough podcast. I’m exploring the evolution of the Zelda game series by playing through each game in release order, excluding spin-offs and multi-player focused releases. Each season focuses on one game in the series. Legendary Adventures was conceived and launched as an audio podcast. I am making video versions of episodes as I am able. You can listen to all my episodes by subscribing to the podcast.

Ocarina of Time's title screen still gets me nostalgic to this day. Such a beautiful game.
hahahah beatiful lel
@@liukang3545cringe
For real. I got goose bumps and a tear in my eye when i first loaded OoT 3d. It was so long since i heard and saw that title..
So nostalgic it almost “hurts” hearing it. Maybe just for me because i watched my older brother play ocarina and majoras mask when I was a little kid and he passed away in 2016. I been replaying Ocarina on his Nintendo 64. Majoras mask after
😭 - Yup...
I still remember Christmas of ‘98. I found Golden copy of OoT hiding in my parents closet 10 days before Christmas. It was the start of winter break and I could not wait to play so I opened it and played it in secret and put it back in its packaging before my parents could find out. It was really hard acting surprised that Christmas morning. I love you mom and dad.
as a kid i used to just let the intro run while i was getting ready to play, in out my room etc eating dinner, homework. Parents must of hated me
I have shipped 15 games as a professional, and 1 indie game, and Ocarina of Time still impresses me with just how much of the 'basics' they got right in modern game design. They really nailed almost all of the things we take for granted all at once back on a calculator of a game console. I love this this game.
It's crazy to think tbe N64 is a calculator of a console nowadays. When it was released, it was considered so poweful in comparison to what came before... Times fly by
And as an adult how many times have you had sex?
Lmao
I remember reading once that at the time of release, OoT was viewed as a patent machine for Nintendo. It advanced 3D gaming with so many industry firsts, far more so than Super Mario 64. Much like how every modern shooter has a bit of ancestral DOOM and Quake ‘DNA’ still in terms of mechanics (and sometimes even code), many action-adventure and open world games still use game mechanics that were first introduced in OoT.
Also, the audio and music design.
Imagine having no game dev experience, and being casually invited to join the development team for the biggest video game in history
And now Aonuma killed the Zelda series and is an out of touch bitter bored old man.
The opening theme kind of sounded like music that you think about as you grow over the years, which is exactly what this game is about. It also is ironic how this game accurately depicts real life where things are so nice and easy when we are kids, but become very dark and gloomy when we're adults.
❤
Very poignant. Thank you for sharing.
Yup, I always kind of thought of it that way; Plus, meeting Sheik outside the Forest Temple that has a lot meaning behind it too!
IMO: I mean all of the things Shiek says when you meet them is always a good message behind them!
@@shanekimberlin - Yup!
Such an underrated element to the game
I was 7 when this game was released and I looooved watching my older brother play for hours (I was too scared to play myself). Now I'm 32 and playing TOTK. This game series is every thing to me.
How are you enjoying TOTK. I'm disappointed with some things but I like it for the most part.
@@Drew_2152 Ok, to be totally honest, I'm loving it cuz I'm a dumbass for real and I was struggling with BOTW lmao. So now with TOTK I feel warmed up and I'm completing the shrines and other things a lot faster now. And I think the story line is really cool.
Twilight Princess is still my favorite though.
@@collinmccarthy6279 that’s cool. I also liked the story and its new characters. I like BOTW a bit more with some things but I still play TOTK more because of the new world.
I was 8 playing OoT back in the day, it kills me to see how far the series has fallen. BOTW was the worst 3D Zelda game and TOTK is only slightly better but still a horrible Zelda game. Aonuma has killed the franchise,
@@ItApproaches TOTK misses on so many core elements like the story, dungeons, puzzles, characters, items/equipment, side missions, musical instrument, and music. I do think the abilities and gameplay were fun and innovative tho. The open world is sparse and boring and just a big gimmick that falls flat after 30 hours. Nothing will ever compare to OOT and MM. I’ve been playing those games on repeat since I was 7 and they seriously never get old.
koji kondo is my hero. what an absolute legend
Another reason the game is 3rd person is because of the importance of seeing child Link vs adult Link. Seeing your character grow up in front of you is an integral part of understanding the character
We've found a hidden gem of a channel folks
Exactly what I thought, Master Yoda.
All hail the algorithm for bringing us here
For the z-targeting in combat, one neat trick is if you're fighting multiple opponents and not locking on, they will all attack, but if you z-target one, the others will back off so you can fight one-on-one
Can’t believe I’ve played this game for over 20 years and never realized that. So cool. Thanks man.
Really? Never realized !!
Cool!
Liar
@@mendaixI thought they had the enemies rotate in during z targeting for Majora's Mask.
The thing a lot of recent players probably don’t realize is, while the game itself is amazing…the GLITCHES in this game were also some of the most wild ever seen. The whole bit in the end with the master sword glitch at the Gannon fight turned it almost into an extra “level” to enjoy. Nothing to accomplish…but more of like a playground where anything could happen. Hook shot flying. Sky swimming. Driving epona remotely. There was so much. I’m pretty sure it became the main reason we got so many playground rumors around that time.
Edit: one thing I wanna point out is that these glitches were not obvious. It wasn’t like Skyrim where the game just shit it own pants every now and then…OoT was completely solid to play. You only got the glitches by following a set procedure at the very end of the game…but once you did…it’s like it cracked the whole game wide open.
I can see that
yep. same with super mario 64 as well.
The first 3d games must have been wild for trying to stamp out glitches because no one knew where to set boundaries or what players would try to do with the tools they were given
My moniker in some places (my phone, my console modding name, etc.) is Swordless Link. It's odd how one of the first 3D adventure games was so entirely polished, yet the glitches that it did have often added value to the game. Skyrim, this is not.
Don't forget the two that made speed runs possible: Infinite Sword and Bomb Sliding.
The G.O.A.T. of all video games.
...The Greatest Of All Time of all video games?
Thats like saying Chai Tea
It's incredible how I'm still learning new things about this game. And the music...every time I hear it it's like I'm transported back to 1998 again.
That title screen and music takes me right back to my teens, picking the game up just before Christmas and playing this with the family around the house during the holidays. Perfect times.
This is exactly my experience. This game ate up from Christmas through my entire summer in '99 doing playthroughs with my cousin. Great times.
I found a working CRT Tv 📺 at thrift store and dug out my older brother’s Nintendo 64 with Ocarina of time and Majora’s Mask. He passed away in 2016 so it’s tough for me to play Ocarina without getting sad. Playing the same 2 games he competed when he was 10-12 years old.
RIP Phil ❤ 1989-2016
When I finish Ocarina I’m going to try Majora’s Mask I’ll probably need to use a TH-cam more than a few times while playing Majoras mask. Ngl I had to use TH-cam to beat the water temple in Ocarina 3 months ago. They made Ocarina and MM tough and difficult so that you would feel proud and accomplished if you completed the game all the way through.
I'm really sorry, God bless the both of you.
Hey I'm sorry for your loss and I hope the playthrough is a cathartic in a way knowing this video game offers a wordless conversation for you and your brother.
I am currently playing through Majora's Mask and I confidently say there is no way in hell I could make progress in this game without some kind of guidance. It's absolutely one of the most unique Zelda games out there and recommend it, but holy shit if it ain't a slow burn. With that said, happy gaming!
Hands down, the best Zelda game ever made.
I cant believe Navi is from "Navigation".
This was such a good game. My text ringtone is the Navi “hey, listen!” 😆
Oh jeez…I have to do that now, lol…
My text ringtone is the Guitar bit at the beginning of Gerudo Valley!
The title screen music in Ocarina of Time is incredibly beautiful
It’s interesting how Miyamoto suggested Zelda go to first person. A few years later he would suggest it again for Metroid, and that time it stuck.
I feel like Metroid probably works better because of the shooting mechanics. He probably realized that
Metroid Prime was in extreme trouble at the time when Miyamoto showed up to address the development team. His design suggestions were really thinly veiled ultimatums for Retro Studios to deliver on or all funding would have been pulled at that point.
Can you imagine the experience of going from first person to then suddenly switch to third person, side-on view for all the encounters? Who would even think of something that needlessly clunky? Miyamoto has some good ideas, but BOY has he got some STINKERS
@@Lewi_Richit sounds a bit like Final Fantasy 7, if that had used first person for the maps. So it wouldn't really be clunky, but it also wouldn't fit very well with the action adventure style.
How the actuall hell do you not have more subscribers? Instant sub, like, and comment as soon as I saw your editing and the theme of these videos. I am praying that the algorithm is kind to you and grab others as it did me!
Quality and success don't have much of a relationship.
Really wish they’d had time to complete the sixth adult temple “Light Temple” where you’d get the hookshot. Seems pretty clear this was intended
I hope someday they can dig up the old code (or the fan-made reverse engineered code) and make a "director's cut" with all the things that were originally removed for time or technical constraints.
Oh yes, so happy this just dropped!
Great episode! I really enjoyed hearing how the team developed it and the chaos of putting it together and the part about Toho studios and the fight giving them ideas!!
Yes, OoT DID invent the "chaining" targeting the way we see it in many games to this day (like Souls). What you see in Tomb Raider is basically aim assist. Mega Man Legends doesn't even let you move, and even to roll you have to release the button. There are other games that come close, but they are never quite it
Ive never believed it. Ppl just regurgitate what they've heard. I'm sure there was a lock on targeting "system", or action, prob on PS1 before oot. It def wasn't the first 3d game and there where plenty for a few years before that game came out. Im gunna go do some digging. If I find sumthing I'll update this comment
@@NintenDub Alita and Virtual On are the closest you will find. Alita doesn't have a dedicated targeting button, the camera is static and the game automatically picks the target in your line of sight. In Virtual On, it's really just the dash attack (a rather cinematic on-rails action) where the game automatically locks on for you, and you can't walk around freely while "chaining", use different weapons and switch between multiple targets like in Zelda
So yes, OoT was the first to do manual targeting the way you see it in games like Dark Souls today. Don't let anti-Nintendo fanboys tell you otherwise
@@ryukishi8492 in Megaman legends 2 targeting is really similar. But then, it was just refined from the first game, after seen how a 3d Zelda handled it.
@@NintenDubHi, old ass gamer here. I don't need to repeat what anyone else has told me cuz I was there. You're wrong! OoT was the first. It was a big deal, something magazines were oohing and aahing about months before release. I remember being baffled by all the praise at the time because it seemed like such an obvious way to handle targeting to me, but with adult hindsight and context it's easier to see how revolutionary it was.
@@Goosewitdajuice317They were the first. Not the first 3D lock on targeting system. But the first targeting system that allowed full movement and dodging and the seamless switching of targets, paving the way for Soulslikes especially. Believe it or not, Nintendo is actually a company who is sort of famous for their revolutionary gameplay systems, as well as hardware innovations. They invented z-targeting.
I still would want to see the development of this Game made into a movie. Aonuma could be the protagonist, a fish out of water guy who never played a videogame but now has to create one of the biggest ones at the time. Miyamoto could be both the mentor figure for the whole team, leading and teaching them through rough times, but also being a villain who needs to be overcome on some very important decisions.
in 9th grade my buddy SWORE that a friend of his knew a guy who SWORE he found a way to get and equip the triforce and we spent a ton of time trying to figure out how, also i discovered a whole new level of hate for water levels thanks to this game
I was the kid who had a GameShark and knew a little about binary and how computers work in theory, but not much about how games were actually made.
There was that "beta quest" code that scrambled the cutscenes and entrances and made the game really bizarre and dreamlike. I got so much extra enjoyment out of screwing around with that after having finished the game. It was like discovering all these bizarre, unfinished, broken leftovers.
At that time, I didn't really understand that most of what I was seeing was just glitched, rather than actual unused/hidden content. Though, there was a bit of that too.

I recently played this game in 2022 on an original n64 and I loved it. It got me into Zelda and is now one of my favorite games of all time.
This was an amazingly well done video, reminded me of the Gaming Historian in quality. Keep up the great work!
Every time I learn more about OOT’s history, I believe more it’s a miracle it’s this good.
And I also understand why can be so glitchy in speedruns.
NES in Hebrew means Miracle.
Man, this is the first game I remember playing.
Absolute magic, as a kid when things got rough I’d go to Zoras domain & listen to the theme music. Seemed to always calm me down.
I have been a fan of Zelda since i was a kid with the first one on the NES, and as i grew up i played every entry up until now, but i will have a special place in my heart for the time when OOT was released, it can't be described how impacted the industry, it became an instant classic and a masterpiece.
I only ever owned two games on my N64...Mario and Zelda. Pretty disappointing that there was never a Metroid game on that system.
So so SO glad this was on my recommended. This is fantastic so far!!!!
Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask was damn perfect, the atmosphere was so serious, dark and mysterious, and the graphics was perfect for the setting. All Zelda games after that have just looked and feeled bad compare to this two games.
Damn how much i miss thise two game and how they was.
great episode, thank you for putting this together!
Welp, here’s an entire channel to binge. Looking forward to this journey❤
This gives me Gaming Historian vibes. Keep up the good work!
Hey! Listen! Just a fellow OoT and Zelda series lover who happened to be recommended this video, and since this is my favorite game of all time I tend to search for people making fun or interesting content about it, or to hear even more about it and am very happy to run into this one. Just wanted to say it was super well done, clear and concise with the simple edits of gameplay footage & easy to read quotes. Very much now am a fan of yours, earned a sub and absolutely will be going back to binge further. Hope to see lots more content like this for OoT and a ton of the Zelda games, your voice is very relaxing and it's clear you did your homework instead of half-assing it.
Appreciate the time you put in for the Zelda die hards like me who can never get enough info about OoT or the series as a whole, keep it up!
To even hear you talk about this game and to think about puts tears in my eyes, that's how much I love this game and nothing has ever came close to the magic that was OOT, experienced as a kid.
I think this would have way more likes if the sound editing was better. There were times that the sound just exploded, but when your voice returned it was so low that I barely heard you... But nonetheless, you really are a gem channel! Your content is amazing and managed to grab my attention from start to finish even with that problem with the audio. Thank you for the video!
17:30 😅 I love that Koizumi’s wife spurred the first “handsome Nintendo character”
Freakin legend
0:22 oh you unlocked a deep memory of when that tune would play in Super Mario Bros 3 when you used the flute
What a relaxing video style. The algo recommended this to me and I'm happy to sub and look forward to your playthrough!
What a history lesson! It feels so good to hear about the indephts of one of my favourite titles ever. Thank you very very much!
Great podcast. Looking forward to the next episode.
What a great watch. Freshly subscribed and I look forward to get watching the other videos.
Ridiculously great video man! Thank you very much.
And then we have the oh so competently made combat system from BotW and TotK where every enemy from every angle will just gang up on you at once with both melee and ranged attacks, usually taking an enormous chunk of your health away with every hit.
I swear, the normal Zelda games always had fun and fair combat where in the new ones have stopped the ball so hard that I will often just try my hardest to avoid it altogether when possible.
Such a shame -_-
When I was a young teen I used to think this was not only the greatest game ever made but the greatest adventure of my life thus far. It got me interested in the fantasy genre, medieval history, stories from epic history, tabletop gaming and JRPGs. Suffice it to say, it was the best Christmas gift of my life and the only other game that came close to having a similar impact was Final Fantasy X.
Loved this video, great voice tons of info and tidbits. New sub and will follow along.
this video alone made me subscribe and i will also share this video with a friend. thank you for the awesome video.
Wow, it's so good to have found this channel... I'll be taking a look at your A Link To the Past video later.
I've always loved learning about N64 games and their developments. There's just something so mysterious about them, especially this and Super Mario 64.
It's kind of like the opposite to the development cycles on the SNES, when Nintendo had perfected the 2D formula.
We had Club Nintendo in The Netherlands back then and they showed off screenshots of the alpha build. I waited 3 years for what would become not only my favorite Zelda game, but still my favorite game to this day! Hearing about the development process made me want to and eventually become a game developer. Watching this video inspires me again to make games like this eventually!
A playthough of my favorite game of all time. Looks like I'm subscribing.
This was a loving lesson to myself and children on how to live and overcome corruption, like the Bible, and I have become Link
Just earned a new sub. Love this.
this game was like walking through the door to Narnia for childhood me. I went from side scrolling sonic to exploring this magical and mysterious world knowing absolutely nothing about it before I turned it on
Just hearing the opening music brings tears to my eyes. I love this game so much.
This was a stellar video!
Subscribing because you sound like a warm PBS narrator and the video is slappin'
Thank you!
Thanks for the video with all this info in a good format.
The algorithm brought me here and I love it. Liked and subscribed
Awesome find. Thank you, Algorithm! lol look forward to more Zelda talk!
I still have the old Nintendo Power issues that show early screenshots of the game with Link in a very basic 3D town, and many other scenes that never appeared in the final version. It's so cool to learn about the development process.
This is fantastic. Great work!!
Truly one of the gems.
Amazing game, I still have to stay. Even my kids play with me and loved it.
Zelda Ocarina of Time has been my favorite game since I was a kid this whole time, and I NEVER knew... that Navi's name came from the fact she "Navigated" Link .... Wow... I love it :)
Subbed. Super sick video man the edit was done very well. Your other content is unique too
When that beat drops at 12:15 though. The soundtrack was so good.
Intro gave me goosebumps
Subbed, here before 2.5k subscribers. Leaving this as proof that I liked him before he got super popular
Fascinating. I never noticed enemies backing off while Z-targeting, but yes, they do. 🤔
My first time playing OOT was on the 3DS. Once I became adult Link, I did the dungeons completely out of order, completing the Water Temple first (at least from what I remember) by getting some items from the other dungeons
The water temple in the original game was excruciatingly painful because of the constant switching to menu screen to swap boots.
@macethorns1168 ah i see. it's my favorite but i can see why playing the 3ds version had a different effect on how i felt about it
@@LinkyTea3DS improved on that by letting you equip boots to buttons, but it also changed some things to make the water temple easier to navigate.
I may have issues with Ocarina of Time that developed through the lenses of modern eyes, but that title screen is absolutely a work of art. It encapsulates the ideas of melancholy and innocence perfectly.
The third open world game has to be like "Melody of Memories" or something with free musical composition creating the various world manipulating effects?
I'm watching this after playing ToTK, I played OoT when I was young on the N64, but the one comment about the sages imprisoning war had me GO CRAZY! Because the ToTK timeline in the past is about the imprisoning war, so now you have my head going in Circles! Because they themselves have now put a piece of the timeline, that people had a hard time understanding or figuring out when it happened, on the timeline! This is amazing!!
Where has this channel been hiding?
Great content ❤
Happy I fell upon this channel. Great stuff. subbed.
Timeless classic *pun Intended* people still playing in going into 2024! broken or fixed! this game will never die! and will always be one of my favorites games! awesome knowledge in this vid man!
this video is really great! I enjoyed learning about this topic, surprised I haven't seen much about the development of Ocarina of Time, and especially on TH-cam
It sure takes me back to my childhood.
Amazing video, great work. Wish I was a kid again to experience OOT for the very first time.
I was 7 years old when I played OOT for the first time. I played it over and over again so many times over the years… It’s probably the most visceral nostalgic memory I have from childhood. ❤ The world, characters, story, and absolutely genius music are all perfect
The music in this game was beyond immaculate. The second I hear 3 notes of any of the songs from the game, I know what I'm listening to. That's the mark of great song-writing. Even to this day, I regularly listen to the OST.
I was four years old in 2000, glad I got to play this game growing up still my favourite since that age. Parents never knew how’d I beat it at my age without reading.
This was beautifully done
That intro is legendary. Always reminds me of getting home from school, my feet freezing during the winter from snow in my boots, and running upstairs to let my feet warm up while the intro played while it was getting dark out. And I was already in high school! :P
Thank you so much for acknowledging the misconceptions around the things that Ocarina of Time is credited for. While it wasn't the first to do some things, it definitely did them pretty well. Great video!
THANK YOU FOR THIS
Very great video. Thanks
I.... Never caught on to the ocarina of time title music sampling the flute from the original game....
That's so awesome
This is such a professional and well made video game documentary. Well done.
Thank God they did it, and the way they did. Life changing, still so inspirational and Ive only recently started to understand the symbolism and lessons. Such wonderful, kind, whole, strong creators put their best selves into this game for humanity and children... This game is the real reason to help other people. You have to remember that there are people like this out there, or were, or thats what all or most humans are capable of.
I own this game 6 ways. I'll buy it again if the release it again.
one day after the 25th anniversary of zelda OoT, what a treat
Amazing in debt video! Learned a lot of new facts
Gentlemen, we found the Triforce.
What a great channel. Subscribed.
