Episode 71
Sonic the Hedgehog might be the most important game Sega ever made - If it wasn't for the blue blur, Sega may have never become a real player in the home console industry. When they desperately needed a hit, Sega made it happen.

So how did this game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
How to complete every Act and Zone - Always take the best path!
Where to find TONS of hidden items and power ups!
How to get EVERY CHAOS EMERALD, and see the game's best ending!
SECRET TRICKS to gain TONS of EXTRA LIVES and continues!
SHORTCUTS and GLITCHES that will launch Sonic through levels at absurd speeds!
SECRET CODES for a Stage Select, Sound Select, and FULL DEBUG MODE!

I'm 37 , and just now thanks to this video i can now beat Sonic ....thank you sir...😢...all jokes aside kids now a days have no idea how painful some of these games were
These old games were painful, but oh boy, were they fun.
What was crazy about Sonic was the fact that he had 3 separate cartoons in the 90s, voiced by Jaleel White in all 3, and they were all around the same time. I remember loving Sonic SatAM and Underground, but never really getting into Adventures. It just shows how much of an icon sonic really was, and is.
We only really got Adventures when & where I was growing up, it was on daily after school and was my introduction to chilli dogs lol. SatAM (I think) played on a channel that never came in, but I always saw ads and wanted to watch it so bad.
Man, that retriever is amazing at games.
Played this classic countless times and I've still learned a couple new tricks, you really do go above and beyond to show off every nook and cranny and I'm dang impressed. Keep up the great work.
Wow. Never expected you to cover a Genesis game so soon. You're just full of surprises, dude. Glad I subbed
I would have been happier if he never had, tbh
I’m excited for his growth it’s a matter of time before it blows up
SONIC!
He can really move!
SONIC!
He's got an attitudeeee
@sisuphos yeah it was a good one - sad it ended abruptly. It was also a million times better than those Mario shows.
I'm ready for Sega games! Can't wait to see UCBVG make Ecco the Dolphin look easy
If he can he'd be the goat of retro games
I'd LOVE if he did Ecco! I was so confused by that game back in the day. I really wanted to like it, but could never figure it out enough to enjoy it. Please fix this bit of my childhood!!! 😆
YES! Please do Ecco the Dolphin!
You maniac
Beavis And Butt-Head
I beat this game 100 times as a kid but it was always a challenge. I thought what could this dude show that I don't know. Well done sir.
I beat the original Sonic a few times on my cousin's Genesis around 1993. I tried it more recently, about 15 years ago, and Labyrinth zone 3 destroyed me on the Nintendo (Game Cube?) version...I'm not sure if I lost my touch, or if the format of the controller had something to do with it. The inability to beat the game like I did in 1993 hurt my pride a little. 😀 Thanks for the video and memories!
I actually regularly took the Marble Zone shortcut you showed every time I played the game. At the time, I patted myself on the back, not realizing better gamers saw it long before I did. Again, thanks for the amazing video!
I won a Sega Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog from the Nickelodeon Slime Time Sweepstakes in 1991/92. Was the greatest day of my childhood lol
whoa, nice! what were the rules / how did you win??
@@conzmoleman I just sent in a postcard with my name, address and phone number on it! I remember the day like it was yesterday...... I carried around the Sonic box for 2 weeks.
@@FreedsFirstTime_Whisky_Reviews dude that’s so cool!
Sonic 2 and Super Mario World were my two favorite childhood video games. Countless hours of fun. I was even Sonic for Halloween one year.
The Green Hill Zone has one of the most iconic level themes in video game history.
It was my ring tone for years
@@lennybrewster4673 Heh heh heh, RING tone. 😆
It's made by a very popular Japanese keyboard player from the time. He was a pop star.
It's taken me 30 years, but I never noticed before that the background of Marble Hill Zone is a nod to Altered Beast. That's what I love about SEGA. They are very explicit when they reference other properties and they seem to do it more than other companies!
I never knew that, thanks for pointing that out. Wow Sega with the hidden easter eggs.
I cant unsee the mario faces in parts of marble zone background
This comment is how I finally realized it.
@@alil_adon Holy crap I never noticed that!! Nice find 😃
I always thought that's what it was
24:24 - You actually don't need to ride the block all the way back. With some speed and a well timed jump, you can actually make it to the upper ledge from the platform. No erupting lava required.
That would not be a strategy for the casual gamer though lol
This is like the adult brain way of playing Sonic. Farming as many rings as possible and playing as slowly as possible to not give up any lives!
Not only is there going to be a THIRD Sonic movie, but there's even a rumor that Shadow could be voiced by Hayden Christensen who most people know as Anakin
"THAT was true at first but that rumor was debunked when Keanu Reeves was officially cast to voice over Shadow The Hedgehog in #Sonic3Movie THIS upcoming Christmas 2024 in theaters, but it would've been cool to hear Hayden Christensen voice over Shadow for sure, Hayden Christensen is cool by my rule book." ☺️ #MiddlebrooksFanatics♈ #SonicTheHedgehog
The game that started it all! What more needs to be said, Sonic is a classic, and one of the 16-bit greats. As many times as I've beaten this game during my childhood, I never found all the secrets there are to be found in the game. Plus, the Special Zones in this one were so difficult for me! This was a fun walkthrough!
Here's looking forward to perhaps other Genesis titles on this channel in the future!
Agreed, this brought me into the world of 16bit blips and FM Chips.. Still has a special place in my heart… Genesis / Megadrive lives! Thank you for making our Saturday Mornings fun again!
Great vid man! This game was everything when I was a kid, and the sequels are even better.
Sometimes I itch my balls and smell my fingers after.
Sonic 3 was so good.
@@chrismason4224 it's no good unless you play as sonichu
Man this is my elementary school childhood. We had an nes with about 15 games that I had beaten several times by 2nd or 3rd grade. Then we got a SEGA with Sonic packed in.
So, so many hours poured into exploring every square inch of each Zone and Act. I even inadvertently discovered a zip by trying to find hidden walls.
Awesome video as always.
I was blown away when I first played this game
WE'VE UPGRADED!!!
The Super Nintendo Sega/Genesis era is going to be a LONG one!
Next episode he assures everyone that U Can Beat E.T. on Atari.
The dog plays the games, the man does the talking.
It took me longer than it should to realize he adds a dog silhouette to EVERY thumbnail

Man, I am really diggin the in depth history of the games you do. Some of these games have some really interesting back stories and you do a pretty damn good job of covering it all.
For the first special stage, I've found that if you don't touch the controls, you'll end up in the emerald room by default. Once there, you'll need to start moving again to break the diamonds and avoid the goals.
Can you make a video please?
Watching someone explain the game as it's being played is a treasure. Thank you. Now I think I can play it properly. I always thought you're supposed to speed run the entire game or it's not Sonic. I'm going to give it a go and not stop until I beat it.
(Edit) I conquered it months ago. I took my time and used the speed more as a gimmick and a play feature than a staple. Great music and, as a fan and Master System owner from day one, very SEGA. It was like seeing old friends again. Trademark Quality!
RIP Rieko Kodama.
My brand-new Genesis at the time, came packaged with "Altered Beast." At that time, I believe there were only 12 or 13 games available in North America for the Genesis, including the aforementioned "Altered Beast." "Sonic" didn't come out until mid-1991, which was probably a year-and-a-half after the release of the Genesis console.
I remember the first time I played this as a kid when my uncle bought it, the special zone blew my mind and I knew I had to get one. They say the special zone was designed to demonstrate/show off the capabilities of the Genesis Hardware.
A kindred spirit. I also got into Sonic by my uncle as well (Sonic 2 to be exact) when my granddad used to go visit him and my cousins... good times. He also got my brother and me in Mortal Kombat too. Oddly enough my niece also likes sonic and try to introduce her the console games (she has sonic 1 on her tablet) like Sonic mania and a few more on the PlayStation and she loves it.
@@SonicSpeedfan23 Aye!!!! 🤝🤝Sonic is indeed a timeless video game. The Aunt who used to whoop my ass as a kid used to sit down and watch me play those sonic games from beginning to end for mastery! Told her kids 10 years my junior that after her years of watching me play it they dont know what beating video games really entails.
Should out to MK, another classic. I used a lot of qtrs in that machine and a lot of time on the consoles.
I think the point of the slow blocks was showing how industrialized areas are more restrictive. Sonics always had that sort of theme.
Great video and thanks for the upload.
With this move to Sega, I really wanna see a run through of my all time favorite genesis game, Shadowrun. Great content!
Love that you are doing Sega now as well!
I had a Blast processing this awesome video!
Damn dude I've straight up fallen in love with this channel and it's premise
The jump to Sega Genesis! I loved the Sonic series. Awesome video! Thanks for making this!
For once, I'm early. Awesome video.
@Clint Hardnips Umm, because I judt do. Whatever he uploads is awesome. And one day hopefully, he'll cover Ninja Gaiden 3 on the NES... the bane of my existance.
Watched this on Saturday and I'm re-watching now (Sunday) before bed. You are the man!
The green hill zone music brings back so many good memories playing this game on my mega drive. Great game.
The bonus stages have arrows made of rings showing you the path to the emeralds. Also, the ‘up’ and ‘down’ balls in special stages affect the speed of its rotation.
Before Sonic the Hedgehog, I did not understand the appeal of a "chili dog".
After Sonic the Hedgehog, I understood The Chili Dog.
So much nostalgia. I think it's unanimous that everybody hates the Labyrinth Zone. Thanks brother
I forgot for a moment that I was watching a walkthrough. The info about the game in the intro is really good
YOOO I was JUST about to make a short about the Marble Zone zip and the Labyrinth Zip at 5:37!
i've beaten this game hundreds of times. But I like sonic and this channel enough to stay tuned.
Thank you so much for doing these videos. It’s fun to reminisce about game I used to play. Some of them I passed and a lot of them I didn’t and this makes me want to go back and play them. I still have all my old systems and games.
This game take me back to my teenage years
Didn't play this game until I was an adult. I grew up in a nes neighborhood. Fun game but literally none of the kids I grew up with had a Sega. Thanks for the videos I look forward to them every week!
Blue streak speeds by! Sonic the hedgehog, too fast for the naked eye, sonic the hedgehog!
I really enjoy your videos. Nice brisk pacing in the explanations and you cover every nook and cranny. Sonic was my first Sega game after the snes so I know this game inside and out and yet you showed shortcuts I never even knew about. Keep the videos coming. Looking forward to the next ones/
Finally, you’re covering my favorite system of all time. Can’t wait for PCE as well.
U Can Beat Splatterhouse, Blazing Lazers... I'm in!
Here because I'm having trouble in Origins and never beaten it; even on original console.
**These guides are seriously underrated**
You brighten up my Saturday! Thanks for all the hard work you put in to these videos!
He certainly does have The Knack for it.
Fun fact : My region was 100% "NES/SNES Country" back in the 90's (ok, ONE cousin got an original Sega one christmas, as I believe my aunt didn't realize the difference, a video game was a video game to her, LOL) so i have legit NEVER seen a Sonic gameplay session. This is fun to watch, thanks!
I can't overstate how nice it is to watch somebody play a Sonic game without a bunch of passive agressive remarks about the series or the fans. Plus, learn some new tricks to try if I ever decide to play this game again.
I play this on Xbox. I remember playing it at my buddies house after school back in 6th grade. Magical times. Great video as always sir 👍
Nice touch with the Sega joystick! Im so happy youre touching the Sega catalogue, there are difficult AF titles on this platform that need the UCBVG deep dive!
Great walkthrough and guide for a bonafide classic. Loved the Sega Power-esk information panels on the left side, very nice touch!
I bought this game on a steam sale and I truly needed this video in my life
Hey UCBVG, thanks for the video! Glad to see you're adding Sega games!
Also, I really appreciate you always choose to start with the secret codes and dev menus, so everyone could make more of their playthroughs rather than showing secrets at the end. Keep up the good work 👏🏼🐶
It's quite awesome your making the move to cover any and all retro games on different consoles and especially with Sega since it did not survive the ultimate console wars in the end. But Sega did definitely leave a mark and still is as a developer now, especially in the 16 bit era with it's launch title as the mascot that forever started the conversation of console wars. Great video as always UCBVG
As someone who's admittedly above average at these games, it's really interesting seeing things from a cautious perspective again.
This was my first game and the sole reason I am a gamer. I even learned some things I didn't know in the over 30 years I've played this game.
I've beaten Sonic 1 many times but there's a lot I didn't know about the game that I'll definitely be trying! Thanks for the upload.
I played this game for years...never knew about the 20 second shortcuts and the 255 extra lives!
Your guide was exceptional! While the strategies are keen, executing them is equally important.
It pains me to say I never made it to the end of this game. Well done
This channel is like the evolution of the channel cornshaq I used to watch before it stopped. Great channel.
The modded Xbox needs to do a comeback in a major way. I have an modded OG Xbox, and it's showing its age. Love my retro games! 🤘😎
Great vid as always. I just want to add a footnote.
If you're trying to get all the Emeralds through the course of the game, remember. The Ring at the Goal will NOT spawn in Scrap Brain Zone: 1 or 2. So you basically have to get try to have 5 BEFORE Star Light Zone: Act 2.
I love this channel
I never knew about the shortcut through Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 that you showed! Wow! What a difference that shortcut makes!
So awesome to see you branching out into other systems. Another excellent video!
As someone who had a first run Genesis: Yeah, a UCBVG was needed for this game. Marble Zone and Labyrinth Zone alone warrant it!
Speed junkie /mockery
UCBVG?
@@boodro2122 Look at the name of the channel you’re on
@@Lenoh OH! Clearly.....thank you.
I still remember playing this on a rented Sega Genesis back when it debuted here in the States.
I'd love to see you do one of the most notorious and difficult Sega games ever. From the epic comics, comes Chakan: The Forever Man.
I second that
I hope this is a sign of more Genesis to come. There were many games on that I could never beat.
Really happy to see you cover a Genius game. Haven't played this game in ages. Can't remember how many times I beat it. Also remember when the 5secind count down to death scared the crap out of me. Kinda wished you would have waited to take a breath with just one second left just to get our hearts racing.
Also enjoyed sharing the history as usual.
The music in this game is amazing.
Sonic is one of the classics. Always enjoyable. ^^
🦔
You didn't mention this; in Labrinth Zone act 3, if you get the checkpoint after the water fills the room its game over. You'll drown, come back, and the room will be filled every time. There's no other way out.
Happened to me when I was a kid.
😖
@@lordcolinb yeah, that was the face I made.
I totally forgot that the Super Sonic new game + wasn't in the default game! Also, Labyrinth Zone is tough but it has the best theme song in the game. I love that track.
Great memories with this game! As a kid, I always got stuck at the labyrinth zone. I always used the level skip to get past it. I'm going to fire this game back up again. I hope you do sonic 2 and 3 too!
I think this is first game I ever beat as a kid - and one of the only games I ever beat legitimately to this day. I have zero work ethic and am more fond of cheating and goofing around, so it must have been pretty easy lol.
I'm glad there's a good teacher for these old classic games I'm a pro at these games but I'm not so good at showing the easy ways of playing since I've gotten so good at them I use all the advanced tricks in these games 😎
This is why I'm hooked to this channel I've been playing this game since it came out on and off threw the years and did not know about that 255 glitch another great episode thanks
Thanks again for all the top shelf videos🔥simply cannot wait for SPLATTERHOUSE!
Such a nostalgia bomb thank you for doing it. 100k here we come
Another 10/10. If you plan to do more Sega games, would love to see you run Castlevania Bloodlines.
I bought a Japanese copy of Sonic the Hedgehog and put it in my original cart shell. The American release was missing alot of scrolling effects like the moving clouds in the first zone.
OMG Yes! You're finally playing Genesis games! Keep 'em coming!
Taking a dump and watched thus entire thing. Thanks man
Labyrinth Zone gave me such anxiety as a kid. Especially 4-3.
That level is why I had to use the cheat code you featured. Then the rest of the game was a breeze.
Spring Yard is as far as I ever got growing up. The catchy Vegas style soundtrack still gives me anxiety, but it's for the best that drowning countdown would have broke me.
The first Sonic game is so cozy. Back before the games got all wacky, it was just a really solid experience with some really nauseating bonus stages that I hate and want to die. 😅 It's just a fun game and I love revisiting it, so I'm curious what all I missed along the way. Time to go make some popcorn!
Very cool to see a Genesis/MD game on the channel! Love your channel, dude. It gives my Saturdays a little Blast Processing.
I knew u would do sega games. I said it b4 in one of your older videos. Thanks for this. This was my 1st home console n game i owned in 1991 is when i brought it lol
This game really made me like the Sega Systems. Psycho Fox was my only Sega game along with Shonobi being my only favorites. My son loves Sonic.
Just in time before SONIC the Hedgehog 2 comes out in theaters!
Most beloved games of all time
Awesome video, and great transition to Sega. If you are taking requests, please consider Mickey Mousecapade. It might seem lame at first glance, but it's tough as nails, and addictive as crack. A Capcom classic.
Thanks for making these great videos. I find myself looking forward to them just like I did Saturday morning cartoons as a kid.
Cheers!
I used to play Sonic at BJ's (like Sams Club or Costco). THey had an NES and Genesis demoing games. THere was Sonic or Altered Beast depending on the day. Back in the early 90s my parents just left us there while they shopped for an hour. Wonderful times!
I really want to see bubble bobble. I love that game.
This is awesome, I’m glad you did sonic the hedgehog 1, you should do sonic 2 and 3&k aswell. Nice video, I’ve played the original sonic the hedgehog numerous of times and it’s a classic
Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles should be a 2parter. Or they should just show Sonic 3/& Knuckles as a mega-episode.
@@youkai3785 agreed just like the final fantasy one
