For a bit of extra story and context, you can give Vickers and Sternwood the sodium pentothal in the capsules while they're asleep, and hear some interesting things.
I used to be in a criminal justice. One tactic that attorneys commonly use is that they will never ever present evidence in a case where it makes the individual look guilty and they'll completely disregard it. It's not the same as lying, because no question was asked. Like the old saying goes, what mom doesn't know won't hurt her.
That Unsolved Mysteries theme in the intro gave me goosebumps! I didn't get a chance to actually watch that show as a kid because the music spooked me so much I would run to the tv and switch it off. It's definitely not *that* scary, but I clearly have a deep seated reflex triggered by that music.
Same here. I used to play this, Uninvited and Shadowgate at night. Back in the early 2000's, they didn't even have a decent walkthrough for Deja VU which made it more scary going from screen to screen without any help. Walkthrough and GameFAQs are useless now, because there's TH-cam walkthroughs.
I would rent these games in the late 80s when I was a child and couldn’t understand how to play these games, but the music and images would be creepy and scary to me at night on a Friday or Saturday by myself.
My older sister and I played this on NES when I was little, one of the few we played together. I remember being so excited every time we saw a new place where I could tell her to try punching and shooting everything, just to see what would happen. It was so great when we punched out the butler, and so disappointing how few people you could get away with shooting.
I'm so happy to see Deja Vu here! Playing this dark and moody game on the NES as a kid was wild. It was one of the few adult themed games and there was nothing else like it.
If you give sodium pentathol to John Sternwood and Martha Vickers you get some more backstory. That's why there are three of them in the doctor's office.
I was a poorish kid in the mid 80's. I got a few games for special days, and could rent a few here and there, but even though I talked my parents into Nintendo Power, I rarely got to play many of the games. Its a real treat to finally see a few of these. So thank you for the nostalgia, and the walk through of some fun experiences I never got to have!
Probably thinking about this too much but... if someone was making youtube content along your chosen theme of "in-depth players guide", such a person could have selected much more standard choices with mainstream appeal and aimed for maximum channel growth. Instead your choices are what I can only assume is personal preference based on your own tastes or game playing history. Not only that but even when tackling something that would be a massive project like this one, with multiple versions each with their own variations and changes to cover, you do not take the easy way out and genuinely take the time to go over everything when it would be so much easier to just show people the easiest way to reach the ending. Every game gets the same treatment and coverage that most would only reserve for their top 1 or 2 most beloved childhood favorites. Great video! Thanks to your guide, I was able to beat Deja Vu. Also, I was able to work out the payout table for the slot machine (for the largest part). Here's what I found so far: 3 7's: 30 coins; 3 Bars: 22 coins; 3 Plums: 18 coins; 3 Bells: 16 coins; 3 Cherries: 14 coins; 3 Bananas: 12 coins; 3 Lemons: 10 coins. About the only one I haven't hit yet is 3 Melons. Interestingly enough though, I hit 3 Bars at least 3 different times while I was working this out.
I don’t need this video. I could play through the whole game with my eyes closed. But everything about this video was compelling and made me feel reconnected to the joy of playing it as if it was my first time. Thank you so much.

@@UCanBeatVideoGames Its rare, but in the game Deja Vu there is actually a second mugger that you didn't show off or mention (unrelated to the one you can punch 3 times before giving him the $20 bill). This mugger seems to be an extremely rare encounter and randomly appears in the back alley of the bar when you get off of the fire escape. When he shows up he wants all of your coins. I remember my friend getting this game for his 10th or 11th birthday. I always loved it, played it before then, but this game makes me think of him. Rest in peace, Brad.
So I love these games. Absolutely adore them. The one thing I NEVER understood as a kid was exactly what you were supposed to do in the final screen to win and it became ultimately trial and error and I just had to look it up of what items to discard.
The Unsolved Mysteries intro was gold! Man, I remember the Halloween episodes scared the hell out of me as a kid, cause the show was REAL! That meant ghosts and aliens were going to get me!
I LOVED this game! I still go back to it from time to time, it was such a drastic change from anything I had played and it was my intro to Shadowgate/Univited style games. Plus, for an NES game, It has a really good soundtrack
This game was ahead of its time kinda. I never really could figure it out as a kid, but I went back as a teenager and this became one of my favorites. Its a little Maniac Mansiony, mixed with Shadowgate...mixed with LA Noire? I love it.

Gotta say, your sidebar content on all of your videos is top-notch; thorough and insightful. I really appreciate the side-by-side comparison of the Mac version and the NES. I own the actual NES cartridge, and beat it on my own. It was one of the first 'point and click'-style adventure games I ever beat, so I'm mostly watching this to see what I missed in my playthrough. I had no idea about the leave bullet glitch.
The Xbox store has an 8 bit anthology which includes Deja Vu, The Uninvited and Shadowgate. I highly recommend getting it, it's only $8, just picked it up myself and am working on Deja Vu. It holds a special place in my heart
The MacVenture games are staples in my occasional NES library playthroughs every few years. I would love to see a playthrough of Nightshade though! I caught a glimpse in the intro and now I need to see it!
I really love the MacVenture games. At the time, I wasn't aware they were ports of computer games, but they were (are) just so atmospheric, immersive and unique and totally unlike anything else available on the NES.
I made it to the end of Nightshade, but I couldn't beat Sutekh. It was frustrating and I gave up after a few tries. I knew I was so close each time though. I remember there was some kind of a contest for Nightshade too, if I'm remembering correctly. That's so long ago that I forget.
I don't understand why any people would give @U Can Beat Video Games any thumb downs. The guides for beating video games are amazing and explained very well with a side of some funny one liners. Keep up with the great guides!

Funny how the cab driver doesn't care that you just opened a door with a gun, lol. Maybe that's why he looked nervous when you first got into his cab- "Fuck, it's that Ace Harding guy again, he's dangerous!"

Thanks for the detailed walk-through again, it's a bonus if you cover an NES game that Im just discovering for the first time
1:13:00 - I never took the whole situation with Vickers and that note as being an indication that it was from Sugar Shack or that Vickers was turning tricks. I thought the note was from Siegel that warned Sternwood to stay away from her. You remember Vickers’s diary entry that Siegel was a jealous type, so the line about Vickers being ‘mine’ tracks with someone being possessive. While Vickers isn’t a prostitute, she is a gold digger, which is why she was having an affair with Sternwood. The possessive nature is likely why Siegel ended up dead.
I remember playing this game back in the day and had no "CLUE" (no pun intended) on how to solve this mystery, I really enjoyed this walkthrough, fantastic work as always! cheers!
Wow, so much work to do a side by side of the NES and Mac versions, thank you for making this! I think your format is perfect for point and click games -- would love to see you give the same treatment to Shadowgate and Uninvited.
“You light up. The feeling of tobacco smoke courses up and down your throat. You’ll probably get cancer. You probably deserve to…” While I’m not sure if this is the 1st or 2nd game, it’s kind of odd that it isn’t in the NES version, as smoking/cigarettes aren’t always removed, much like in Metal Gear.
Great video, thank you for everything you do! This video feels significantly Quieter than usual however... Was there some kind of difficulties in recording this one?
At least In this game you don't have to worry about torches like shadowgate. Also hitting the mugger is like stabbing the troll in shaddowgate, the troll disappears until you try to cross again and then pops back up with your spear and kills you by either collapsing the bridge or grabs youb and takes you down into the cave. I forget which it is but you have to pass him 2 times I believe but the second time you drink an invisible potion and walk on by him. Long nights staying up beating that game lol before the internet to look up how to best the game lol
I'm pretty sure Letter 2 was sent by Joey Siegel, not Sugar Shack. Vickers is Joey's secretary plus he has her picture in his penthouse because she used to be his girlfriend. Maybe it's the underground casino or the torture room or the mob connections Joey is revealed to have had in Deja Vu 2 but he strikes me as the sleazy kind of guy to get jealous and controlling before realizing he can extort cash out of a richer man. Sugar Shack, meanwhile, just got out of prison when you run into her - her release isn't in Ace's files so I feel it is safe to assume he thought she was still in the pen because she was - plus there isn't anything to tie her to Vickers. It doesn't seem like the two even know each other.
I never played this one but I loved Shadowgate and the Uninvited. I even played the Mac version of the Uninvited a little bit way back when it was out!
I remember the Mac version and loved playing it on there. Now I have the NES version which is fun. :) Never played number 2 before. Great info and now I will need to pull my game back out and play. Keep these up... Love you channel.
It's so AWESOME that the Unsolved Mysteries music was used for the intro to this video. That was well done and hilarious that this game was associated with the Unsolved Mysteries music.
OMG, the Unsolved Mysteries theme song from the 80s! YES!!!!!!!!!!! You are the best my friend ;) Thanks for shining light on this game -- never heard of it!
Ok dude, you are so great! This is like 2 reviews in one! I love that you did both games and showed us the b&w mac version as well! I've never seen anyone else do that. I definately love both the graphics, and enjoy the interior design choices on the nes (so much orange!). I've never really wanted to play the MacVenture series because I've never done point and click games before (and princess tomato seemed complicated the only time I saw it as a kid). But now I want to play this both ways! Outside of this game, I'd been trying to remember what b&w mac games I played in elementary school besides Oregon trail, before they switched to colour power pc macs. All I can remember is KidPix (That dynamite sound blew my mind, also the only program like that I ever used) and choplifter at my dads office, but I'm sure there's more... I love when they introduced when the trash can icon bulged when there was stuff in it, after it went to colour, I wasn't into it really anymore. I really want someone to make a Linux Distro that uses the same graphics, but with all our modern conveniences!
Thanks, Grant! Doing the video this way ended up being a lot of extra work, so I'm glad to hear it was appreciated! I hope to play some of the other Macventures for the channel eventually. Choplifter was pretty cool back in the day.
Another excellent video! Love these games and the soundtracks are some of the best music on the nes. Hope Shadowgate and Uninvited are coming in the future.
I really like that for the whole game you're getting more and more stressed about all the crimes we're committing, but then the moment we get a chance to steal Jon Sternwood's candy, you not only immediately take it, but scold the sleeping man with a hard-bitten detective voice. Like, that one petty theft was fine. Everything else tho, we're in trouble.
I'm very pleasantly surprised that you're doing this! I have never been able to do anything with these games but have always been so fascinated by them.
Nice video! Lots of great deadpan humour as usual. I think my favourite line was "Siegel may have gotten her strapped into that chair and did some things to her that she did not appreciate." XD
For a bit of extra story and context, you can give Vickers and Sternwood the sodium pentothal in the capsules while they're asleep, and hear some interesting things.

Love this channel, love the dog and I really appreciate you pronounce Bros as brothers!! ❤️

I remember playing this game back in the day and had no "CLUE" (no pun intended) on how to solve this mystery, I really enjoyed this walkthrough, fantastic work as always! cheers!
The quality of these videos are top notch! Definitely helpful for speedrunners.
The phrase "emerge into the greater men's room" seems amazingly grandiose.
Wow, so much work to do a side by side of the NES and Mac versions, thank you for making this! I think your format is perfect for point and click games -- would love to see you give the same treatment to Shadowgate and Uninvited.
Was a fan of these games growing up. Thanks for bringing back some great memories.
Loved this game as a kid! The best part of this game was the humor. It does a great job of making you feel like a lowlife loser in way over your head.
“You light up. The feeling of tobacco smoke courses up and down your throat.
You’ll probably get cancer.
You probably deserve to…”
While I’m not sure if this is the 1st or 2nd game, it’s kind of odd that it isn’t in the NES version, as smoking/cigarettes aren’t always removed, much like in Metal Gear.
Great video, thank you for everything you do! This video feels significantly Quieter than usual however... Was there some kind of difficulties in recording this one?
"Where would you like to go mister?" "Wastebasket please." "......."
I rented this game a couple times before breaking down and buying it.
Omg, this game was so great. I had 3 like them. Shadowgate and The Uninvited were the other two point/click games for the NES, that I had.
I hunted through the comments just to see if uninvited was mentioned just so I could recommend him play this also.. thanks
@@mastacreepymoe6460 no problem! I spent so much time with these. They just go together. Lol
@@GothicVioletVixen that's great! I just like to watch old games brings back so many memories.
@@mastacreepymoe6460 agreed, and I find myself wishing they'd come back.
"We did a bunch of drugs and then we murdered a guy!" So casual about it, too. I nearly spit out my food. Haha
This is my jam. Thank you for the homage.
I can't believe that I was allowed to play this out as a child.
Awesome video! I really appreciate the side by side comparison with the original Mac version. Subbed!
It's so AWESOME that the Unsolved Mysteries music was used for the intro to this video. That was well done and hilarious that this game was associated with the Unsolved Mysteries music.
One of my all time favorite games. Spent hours on this and the other 2 MacVenture games, both on the NES and the original Mac.
OMG, the Unsolved Mysteries theme song from the 80s! YES!!!!!!!!!!! You are the best my friend ;) Thanks for shining light on this game -- never heard of it!
You do a terrific job with all of these - thank you for all the hard work and effort!
The fact you used the unsolved mysteries soundtrack for your intro is the best thing ever. Literally has me cracking up over here
Ok dude, you are so great!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames when you do beat them, I'm now way more excited to watch them!

You made an A Few Good Men reference!!! 👍👍👍👍❣❣❣❣❣👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓
I have been binge watching your videos for the last couple weeks and I love all the content, awesome work. Would love to see a video on "Gun Smoke"
You can play the NES trilogy of games on modern consoles with the 8-Bit Anthology Vol 1 game. The game comes with Deja Vu, Shadowgate and Uninvited
