Feels odd commenting on an old post video but like to anyways. If it wasn't noted before, one cool thing you will note that if you play all the levels its equal to a count of 20 thus allowing you to play each character 5 times. If you do this at the end screen when it shows the contributor it will actually cycle through all four names equally on repeat until the screen changes to sleeping Mario. The evolution of Mario games never disappointed and always added something new. I am glad they chose this to be Mario 2, The Lost Levels seems too much like an extension of the Super Mario Bros. game. I feel Mario 2 set the bar for future Mario games having different mechanics, level design, and possibilities of what a Mario game could be. This game helped shape this franchise into my favorite franchise in gaming.
Out of all three Super Mario Bros. games, this is the only one that I could beat. I became so good at the slot machine that I could earn over 90 extra lives. I was easily able to beat SMB 2 with that many lives. This is my favorite SMB game.
In mario 3 save all your p wings and clouds for the final area and you can cheese the hardest levels in the game. Also on level 2 there is a trick involving the leaf powerup and a tube of infinite spawning Goombas that you can repeatedly exploit for infinite lives.
I love how, as kids, we never questioned the differences between Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 2... yet as adults, we can see the quirky differences so clearly... .Yet still never question them 😆 I loved this game back when it was released 😍

Hi, first of all thank you for your channel! I'm appreciating your job and it so exciting to know there are many people who really does like old NES video games. I'm 40 and wondering how I could beat games when I was 13-14 years old. So I feel like gamer retired, however your videos help me to remember how beat the games. It reminds me of that times we played together with friends or were watching for experienced gamers, sometimes I showed how beat the game. As for Super Mario Bros 2 there's another patient strategy to stand on the 2nd platform and waiting for vegetables from horn heading under your feet without necessity of avoiding bubbles. Kind regards, Max.
I've used the jump-off-the-chain trick, but one problem is it means you skip long and interesting parts of some levels. Also, it means you end up fighting Wart with only two health units. Another trick not used here is that mushroom blocks can rest on background graphics elements like clouds, which can be used in places to create alternate shortcuts, like using the one in 3-1 with characters that don't have a long jump.
I am currently playing this one having not been able to get far as a kid and got really frustrated at the time! Your guide is very helpful! It never occurred to me to buy the Nintendo walk through as as a kid!
I grew up with this game and didn't think I'd learn much, but I actually did! I had no clue you could really hit Wart from behind like that!!! Well done video overall!
This was one of the few games I owned as a kid, the system being my brothers. I've never seen whats inside the high up room in 3-1, or beaten 3-2. I definately didn't know about vegetables besides the big turnip and the onion, how the Starman worked, where the warps were (tho I was convinced there was something past the 1st warp pot), the rocketships, Bob ombs, or how you could only get coins twice. Glad this is an all luigi/peach game. It seems a lot more fun now! That whale level is the cutest! I'm glad we got this instead of lost levels.
I'm 46 now but as a kid when I beat this game it felt like such a HUGE accomplishment 🤘💯 I beat it again recently on my nes classic mini and it has save states so I have it saved at the boss gauntlet and various castle parts so I can just jump right in and do it again whenever I'm feeling nostalgic 😁
as a kid i loved experimenting with the potions and being excited when i found a mushroom! it was like a scientist playing with a potion and failing until the EUREKA moment always made long car rides exciting even on the 100th playthrough! and the mario arcade port was really addicting too!
I love how the coin count goes into hexidecimal after you break 10 coins. I would guess that 16 coins is the max allowed per level. Great video on my favourite NES game of all time!
Tip on wart. You can stand on the third block of the platform over the first horn. Wart’s bubbles are trivial to dodge from there compared to standing below, as only one bubble out of all his possible bubbles even clips that space, and if you are patient, eventually you’ll catch a vegetable there.
Extra nice job on the opening retrospective with this one! Also it's funny that in a Mario game, Mario himself is the only character who's never used in speedruns
I just want to mention that if the you time the coin so that it flips in the real world, it counts double. Also, when fighting Wart, there is a spot on the first platform that is out of range of the bubbles, if you stand there patiently a vegetable will eventually land in your hands. You can then jump behind him and hit him as shown in the video. This slight tweak reduces your chance of taking damage to essentially zero.
Birdo is mentioned as Ostro, and the Ostros are mentioned as Birdo in both the game and manual in the NES port. It's very strange that such an error became unnoticed over the years during the NES era
Howard Phillip's rocked and make a good choice! I love super mario 2! Mario 3 was my favorite though. Even up until now my favorite is Super mario bros 3! Super mario world was great but it could have been so much more and was a bit rushed.
Had your channel recommended a couple of days ago. I love when channels cover the game history. Star tropics is my favorite game ever. Yes, even more than Mario and Zelda. 😁 I see you did part 1. Will you be doing star tropics 2? I think it is underrated.
Thanks, Starla! StarTropics is one of my favorite games, too, and I'm very excited to cover StarTropics 2. Not sure when, but I expect within the next month or two!
That 'phanto' mask scared the shit out of me when I was a kid! The idea of some kind of ghost-like monster that can phase through matter relentlessly hunting you down for taking something that didn't belong to you was just terrifying!
According to the "female characters wiki" there are 76 NES games with female playable characters, and a total of 1391 games on the NES, so games with female playable characters comes out to about 5%. If you were curious lol
Those are exactly the games I like to play here! Mostly NES for now, but I've done one SNES game, and will definitely do some Sega and Atari at some point.
I remember hearing stories about how hard it was for parents to find this game at christmas time. Some drove to other states only to be shut out and have to drive 5 hours back with nothing to show for it.
We got lucky here in NJ, ALL the stores were sold out BUT Service Merchandise. They had BOXES of Mario 2 and Zelda 2! Guess noone figured to check that little store outside the mall. (I bought 2 copies each and kept a sealed copy of each to just have since there were so many)
@@UCanBeatVideoGames But in the final release NES version, we cannot choose between all 4 characters every time we die Untill game over, was that just a oversight?
I think it's better to use Toad in worlds 1-1 and 1-2, you can get more coins for the slot machine. I finally finished smb2 and I have to say that I found it easier to beat the final villain if I crab the veggies and then run to the right. I would always get hit by bubbles if I ran left. And princess is the best character for the final battle because she can fly which makes it easier to get behind the final villain.

Every time I played this as a kid, I always got sick to my stomach lmao. There must have been some resonant frequency in this game that my ears didn’t like. Wow. Flash backs. However, I’m not sick to my stomach now as a 42 year old lololol. I’m watching this whole thing. You’re an amazing dude with how you explain everything ❤️
This was the first NES game i ever beat. After beating Wart and opening that last jar i freaked out at first and thought i had just released a bunch of beezos : D But since my character just kept jumping and happy music was playing i knew i finally beat it and was yelling out to my family that i won and we were all cheering haha. The princess was my favorite character because her float ability made platforming so much easier for me. If i knew how to use luigi properly like you did though i would have liked him best. I used to be really good at getting cherries in the slot machine game. Lost that trick though over the years.

As kids we thought those mushroom blocks were marmelade jars
My new fav channel. This game was no where to be found for like 6 months after X-mas when it came out but i eventually got it. One of my favs.
I am currently playing this one having not been able to get far as a kid and got really frustrated at the time! Your guide is very helpful! It never occurred to me to buy the Nintendo walk through as as a kid!
Just did it! Can't wait for a SMB3.
Watched almost all your videos. We really need to hit the like on these and get you more subs. Great channel. It’s strangely calming and addictive.
Thanks a lot!!
SMB 2 is my FAVORITE Mario release.
My too
as a kid i loved experimenting with the potions and being excited when i found a mushroom! it was like a scientist playing with a potion and failing until the EUREKA moment always made long car rides exciting even on the 100th playthrough! and the mario arcade port was really addicting too!
I love how the coin count goes into hexidecimal after you break 10 coins. I would guess that 16 coins is the max allowed per level. Great video on my favourite NES game of all time!
World record is about 10 minutes. I can do it in roughly 14. Some of those tricks are difficult.
Tip on wart. You can stand on the third block of the platform over the first horn. Wart’s bubbles are trivial to dodge from there compared to standing below, as only one bubble out of all his possible bubbles even clips that space, and if you are patient, eventually you’ll catch a vegetable there.
59:16 to the left. ^^
I'm some kind of addicted to your videos... Thank you so much for your work and all the effort.
Extra nice job on the opening retrospective with this one! Also it's funny that in a Mario game, Mario himself is the only character who's never used in speedruns
Mario doesn’t do anything special in the game but he isn’t bad at anything either.
Can’t wait for link to the past 😊
@@UCanBeatVideoGames loved the star tropics 2 vieo! Watched it twice. 😁
4 dash 2 was my favorite level with pricess. It became muscle memory to duck and jump over every little thing. Loved it.
This man is a hero
Thank you so much!!! Been playing this game since it's release and have never beaten it!! God Bless you!!!😊😊😊😊
Toad was always my main because of his speedy onion-pulling ability
Toad is really good! I always liked being able to get lots of coins for the slot machines with him.
I mean, that's what I look for in a companion too - some speedy onion-pulling. lol
A lot of the kids on the schoolyard liked princess. I honestly couldn’t stand Luigi because of the slow jump.
Mario 3 gets all the glory but, 2 is such a unique and bad ass entry in the franchise.
Mario 3 is great, but this game is def amazing in its own right!
@Drew5876 I agree
If I remember correctly if you take a magic carpet and position yourself at the bottom of the screen so you only see half your body, you move faster.
I should that and record it. Could probably figure out if its faster pretty easily on video, just count the frames.
That 'phanto' mask scared the shit out of me when I was a kid! The idea of some kind of ghost-like monster that can phase through matter relentlessly hunting you down for taking something that didn't belong to you was just terrifying!
Awesome run. I am loving your work man. Devouring this content of yours.
Thanks, Jamie!!
Schon witzig, ich konnte nie gut mit Luigi spielen. Die Prinzessin fand ich aufgrund ihrer Segelfähigkeiten am Besten.
Another one beat finally after all these years, never new how close I actually was this whole time lol, another great video!!!!
Congratulations!!
You do such an amazing job with these videos! 🎉
According to the "female characters wiki" there are 76 NES games with female playable characters, and a total of 1391 games on the NES, so games with female playable characters comes out to about 5%. If you were curious lol
Yes we all know you like playing the pretty princess. You ain't gotta brag about it.
New Channel? Cool I love the old Nes, Snes & Genesis games, the games I grew up on along with Atari 2600
Those are exactly the games I like to play here! Mostly NES for now, but I've done one SNES game, and will definitely do some Sega and Atari at some point.
Me 2. Started off with the 2600, nes, then Genesis.
Demon Attack, Adventure, Night Rider, Missle Command, Circus Atari and Spiderman were my FAVORITES!!!
I remember hearing stories about how hard it was for parents to find this game at christmas time. Some drove to other states only to be shut out and have to drive 5 hours back with nothing to show for it.
I was lucky enough to get it for Christmas! I'll never forget it. My Dad was a hero!
We got lucky here in NJ, ALL the stores were sold out BUT Service Merchandise. They had BOXES of Mario 2 and Zelda 2! Guess noone figured to check that little store outside the mall. (I bought 2 copies each and kept a sealed copy of each to just have since there were so many)
Sadly I sold the 2 sealed ones in 2012. If only I still had them now...
Binge watching these, you cover my favorite games ever.
This game was and is awesome. I thought it was so cool you could choose between the four characters.
Right? That was so advanced for the time!
Just found your channel yesterday it's great to see this kind of gameplays now days it brings such good old memories love your videos keep up the good work saludos Desde 🇲🇽 👏👌
Thank you!! Glad you're enjoying it! This was one of my games, I still can't believe how many secrets this decades old game has.
Every time I played this as a kid, I always got sick to my stomach lmao. Until one day, I decided to play it when I stayed home from school with a migraine and I didn’t get sick to my stomach because the TV was muted so mom wouldn’t hear it. There must have been some resonant frequency in this game that my ears didn’t like. Wow. Flash backs. However, I’m not sick to my stomach now as a 42 year old lololol. I’m watching this whole thing. You’re an amazing dude with how you explain everything ❤️
thank you!!
I wonder what it was about this one that made you sick? Crazy!
My dad rocked this game as Luigi.
