    What I love about your style, Nate, is that you take your job seriously: your cutting is precise & careful like a SURGEON. For all intents & purposes, this would be considered “surgery” if the patient were human....cutting (correctly) into & around live flesh requires skill & careful precision. Thank you for not rushing (as I’ve seen other hoof trimmers do).

    What I really like about the way you work is that you have a very daft touch while trimming hard or loose horn near the corium layer with your hooked knife. In addition to that you always make sure to spray out any and all interior layers and sections of the hoof especially when you start to see blood. I was watching another Midwestern hoof trimmer on TH-cam and he cut out a massive section of horn straight down to the corium layer which had a huge abscess. It was bleeding like all hell and he only cleaned the outer area with what looked like soapy water but he never actually cleaned the massive hole in the hoof that was bleeding. If it were you working on that particular hoof I know you would have sprayed a ton of Chlorhexidine inside the abscess before packing the hoof full of your anti digital-dermatitis powder. For the life of me I can’t remember the actual name of that topical powder you use. Basically what I’m trying to say is that you do a very thorough job in trimming and cleaning problematic areas of the hoof when you spot the first sign of foot Trauma. Some of these other hoof trimmers just don’t compare.

      I say this as a city boy who just binge watched most of this channel but... judging from what Nate has said, the divots in the other hoof just look like natural shedding to me. They aren't holes that tunnel down into the corium. And that black spot near the tip of the toe is natural coloration. When the cow has black and white spots, their hooves actually have black spots too! I've noticed most of the cows he works on have them in the same place.

  • @roefane2258
    @roefane2258 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m sure you’ve probably answered this in other videos, but is there something a farmer can do to help the hoof while they’re waiting for you or another hoof trimmer? As in: should we move them into softer ground, or a place to dry out some of the infected/bruised hoof, or spraying on some antibiotics onto the hoof?
    I ask because I’m reaching getting some cows to meet my family’s dairy needs, but doubt I’ll have the funds to get a crush immediately. And I’ve been primarily looking to prevention, like rubber floors and deep straw bedding. But it wasn’t until your video was in my recommendations that I realized I hadn’t given much thought to temporary care while I’m waiting for a professional. Also, we aren’t getting cows for at least 4 more years, but I’m trying to turn my classroom into a waiting room in the mean time.

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. Many farms have special needs pens that are bedded heavily with either straw or wood shavings that cows can be moved to. If you have cattle outdoors on pasture most of the time and keep up on their hoofcare you shouldn’t have many problems.

    Hey Nate! What would happen if both feet would hypothetically need to be trimmed/cleaned down to the flesh? Or would you do one side, block the other and have to wait a few weeks to do the other side. I've always seen videos where they just block one side of the hoof and clean the other, but never one where they have to cut into both

      In der Regel ist immer nur eine klaue betroffen von einen Defekt,das ausschließlich die Außenklaue.sind jedoch Mal beide klauen betroffen,ist die Heilung sehr schwierig,Mann könnte dann nur einen dicken Polsterverband über beide Klauenhälften machen und noch eventuell eine großen Plastikschuh über den ganzen Fuß machen.Die Kuh müsste dann möglichst auch auf Stroh (weich aufgestellt werden)

    You should get a battery power Makita brushless grinder

    When speaking of the loose horn removal you said that under normal conditions it would work itself off but in the free stall setting you need to cut it off. What are the normal conditions ?

      In a pasture setting hoof sheds off naturally. In a freestall setting feet tend to stay wetter so the hoof doesn’t shed properly.

    Does the block stay on until the next time you treat her or does it fall off over time?

    How long on average does it take for an ulcer to heal?

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you resolve the underlying problem they heal quickly. If they’re complicated by other problems they can take some time. This type would heal quickly.
