I think that's unfair. Nate is enjoyable to watch on his own merits, and hoof trimming is merely his medium of exchange. I'd probably listen to him explain cleaning a fish for eating, or explain how to rebind a book. He's the Morgan Freeman of Hoof Guys. He's like if zefrank1 went out of his way to trim hooves and work with his hands, instead of writing jokes, but still puts it online and narrates the hell out of it.
I'm just saying, I came for the hoof trims, and stayed for the explanations and happy cows that don't walk with a limp, anymore. It's perfect satisfaction on so many levels, like to my roommate who loves Dr. Pimple Popper types of content.

If you're a non-meat eater that's fine but you probably shouldn't make unfounded comments to people that have years of experience working with animals, went to school for their trade and actually know if an animal is in pain or not. Nate is treating these girls to ALLEVIATE their pain, not cause it.
If you've ever had a broken bone in your body and had to have a physician or surgeon set that bone, I bet you felt some pain but he was only trying to help you, just like Nate is. Not everything in life can be done without pain. Think before you make a negative comment.

This is the video where I can see how gentle you are. I can see the bleeding, and I can see that the cuts are shallow, since there isn't big, fleshy lump to indicate where to cut deeper. I've seen people reach similar kinds of "This is a bit hard to work with" situations when trying to help someone else, and they just give up when it starts bleeding and say "This is gonna hurt" before going medieval on the situation. You, with your shallow and patient cuts, are still worried about doing *more* damage when other people get their toes wet, so to speak, and then just dive in.
I won't even check out other Hoof Trimmers because I can tell by thumbnail and clickbait titles that they are in it just for the money, another paycheck with a TH-cam side hustle. I curate my Animal Rescue videos in a similar way, if I see symptoms of poor treatment, a lack of concern for an animal's mental wellbeing, or an excessive amount of begging for money to "Save all these (Insert 3 terrible adjectives) animals". Viktor Larkhill was one of those ones who was constantly begging for money, but the animals in his care were going weeks between videos without any actual footage of treatments or changes in conditions, just random scenes of the animal at a vet, then about 2 minutes of him going on and on about how much money he needs.
I trusted my gut and looked into him, and sure enough, dozens of webpages featuring negative coverage, allegations of lackluster treatment or intentional withholding of treatments for more views, and a name change to escape prior bad publicity. A little blood isn't a sure sign of mishandling or bad treatment, it happens to people in treatment, too, but ignoring it entirely is a bad sign on the person doing the work of healing. Trying to take advantage of it for further profit with no additional work is just a sign of base greed. I see your hands change their strokes when the red starts showing, and I've seen your thumbnails as merely attention grabbing, instead of shock value clickbait. I think this is the last time I plan on bringing this up for a while, but this video is the first I've seen with any visibly accumulating blood, meaning it's the first time I've seen you change your cuts to account for it. Thank you for doing your job for a bit more than just Payday, I really appreciate the tender hands you offer these animals, as a viewer.

Now I’m sure that you won’t ever see this comment, but still - could the sole ulcers on front feet on pasture cows be more likely because of the way they have to distribute weight to eat? Free stall cows have either the trough or ground either slightly raised or even ground - while pasture cows surely have various terrain differences, meaning that they sometimes have to bend over “downhill” to feed, putting alot more preassure on the front feet. Could that possibly be the cause?

  • @CamthalionSpirit

I don’t trim bovines. However I am a professional horse trainer, certified riding instructor, and trim my own horses (along with the occasional client horse). Every horse I have owned has been kept on dry lots/track systems instead of grass pasture. In the twenty years I’ve had horses I have only had one abscess. It was in a horse I had just bought. He got an abscess about two weeks after I brought him home. I’m not savvy enough to put together a study of the magnitude I think it needs to be, but I suspect that equines with access to higher sugar content are more susceptible to hoof issues. I agree the metabolic changes have a lot to do with the quality of their hooves.

    • @toyotaecw
      @toyotaecw ปีที่แล้ว +1

There’s really too many things to list that can affect a cow from the time she’s goes dry to the time she calves. Improper diet, overcrowding, insufficient feed intake during the dry period, being too fat… all these can trigger metabolic bell in a cow that can lead to much worse than foot problems.

I think you're right about the excess horn growth being a symptom, especially as, as you pointed out, you treat it by making the healthy claw take all the weight. Coming from the view point of a microbiologist, I believe your theories about the ulcer formation are really sound, too. Gastric ulcers in humans are generally caused by bacteria called H. pylori that gain a foothold when the human is compromised in someway, often by stress, certain drugs or food-habits, or illnesses. I would not be surprised if, like you said, some metabolic factor play a role that influence the formation of an ulcer in a hoof. Perhaps even several factors together, like also coinciding with calving time or changes in the estrous cycle, stress of changing pasture location or feed, as in this case having to compensate for a different sore foot and already having an activated immune response, or some other combination could be contributing and causing an ulcer to form. Very interesting to hear about!
I am very impressed by your knowledge and your kindness and care towards all the animals you handle, you have my deepest respect for that! Thank you kindly for sharing it!😊

I love how your videos are so informative and you are providing lessons upon what’s happening with a cow or cattle’s feet and how we need to take measures to properly care for and treat not only the cows, but their feet to ensure that their environment is conducive to ensuring that they are well , comfortable and stay in good health..
PS…it’s ALSO SO satisfying to see that lovely nice creamy fresh horn and to see that their hoof issues are dealt with to make them more comfortable. A cow in pain, is stressed and it affects her quality of life and her productivity greatly.
We have a contract with these gentle dearies; we have a responsibility to take care of them and ensure their health and comfort, and in turn, they take care of us. God Bless Them.

I've seen other channels, like the hoof gp, but I cant even get through 5 minutes of them because I can tell that they are more into the money than the animals. I love how well cared for the cows you work on are, I hate seeing cows covered in sores and feces on other farms. As an animal lover myself, it makes me happy that you are so gentle, so loving and so kind towards these animals. Sadly they are still destined for animal agriculture but at least they have you!! Never stop being gentle. :)

With the first cow you didn't relieve pressure on the inner claw(the one you put a block on) for the pedal bone. Either you didn't do that which is part of the 5 step method, or it just wasn't filmed. The problem will persist if you don't take the weight off of the pedal bone as well and since there wasn't a leision/ulsor on the inside claw, if you don't take the weight off of the pedal bone, she will bear all of her weight on that one claw and it WILL cause a problem. I wouldn't be surprised if she had at minimum bruising on that claw. I hope you did carve out the height on the pedal area and I just didn't see it. You're doing a great job though. This is a very hard profession and I have mad respect.

This is becoming a new genre of film: cow noir. "The beautiful redhead crossed her legs. I could see something was bothering her..."
More seriously, I respect your openness to learning and researching more about what causes these conditions. No matter how much you know, you can always know more, and the other hooftrimmers can learn from it. It's so important to investigate what is the cause and what is the effect. If only more people (in every field) paid more attention to that!

You may be on to something with the metabolic changes leading to sole ulcers. Natural calving time is in the spring which also corresponds to the flush of growth of the grasses. Those grasses are well known in the horse world to be higher in sugar content than any other time in the year which can lead to laminitis in sensitive animals. I wonder if that higher sugar content combined with the stress of calving and the extra leverage from hoof imbalances tips predisposed animals over the edge leading to the hoof issues.
Sounds like it could be a interesting research topic for a newly minted vet student( not me sadly).
