    Cows aren’t stupid. They recognize people, and if you were hurting them they’d put up a fuss as soon as they saw you. Plus, I’d imagine it feels pretty good to get their weight off of a damaged/diseased hoof. They probably see you as the human who gets rid of hoof pain.

    • @somayu5248
      @somayu5248 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Processing hurt isn’t to do with intelligence, it’s the pain receptors(nervous system).
      Also, compared to other animals, they’re stupid 🐄🐄🐄🐄🐔

      @Axisoflords 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@somayu5248 If cows are stupid, then I wonder what that makes you?
      1. Cows have high social and emotional intelligence
      2. They can bond with humans, remember individual faces; You can meet up in a cow you haven't seen in months and they'll easily recognise you.
      3. They can recognise their own name you gave them, and will come when called.
      4. They are capable of interspecies friendships with other animals.
      5. They can freely express emotions; Jumping for joy when happy, signs of grief and distraught when they lose a loved one, etc
      So...Yes, actually, Cattle are very much capable of understanding, that the doc is there to help them, and they know to associate the alleviation of pain, after he works on their hooves.
      So many videos I've seen of cows who've been trimmed before, having no issues walking into the 'crush', as they know it's not a place of pain, torture or anything else.
      Processing pain, knowing where it's coming from, and then knowing who is making the pain go away, is a HIGH sign of intelligence. :)

    It amazes me just how quickly those wounds heal and grow so much horn so quickly. The opening and debriedment (sp), done properly, followed by the salisilic (sp) acid work very well. Your experience and training and treatment methods really cure these issues. I love watching you work and your narration is just outstanding! Bless you, Nate. From Washington state (the wet west side).

  • @nicoledefries3100

    I feel like opening it up, letting the wounds drain & treating them would be the equivalent of us having an ingrown toe nail removed. Hurts for a second getting it out, but the pressure & pain relief is almost immediate.

    Could you tell us the pros and cons of the different chutes? I’ve seen lay-overs, both rear feet lifted at the same time, one rear foot at a time. Thanks

    • @NatetheHoofGuy
      @NatetheHoofGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Pros for layovers is speed and efficiency. The only real con from my perspective is the orientation of the feet but that’s because I’m not used to them in that position. Feet usually aren’t as secure so trimmers usually use one hand to hold the foot and the other on the grinder. Pros for upright chutes are cows feel more secure standing. Feet are positioned better for trimming with two hands available for the grinder. Cons are you have to move around the trailer a lot more to trim. I don’t ever pick up both fronts or both backs at the same time. If something were to happen with the support mechanism on the chute the cow would be in big trouble with all her feet raised.

    Many folks are concerned about pain or discomfort, ok, here's what I do. I add the existing discomfort from what ever problem they may have ,then I add any temporary discomfort from your treatment, I then will consider then pain relief from your treatment and add this and divide by 2 for the win. It's just math folks that's all. I realize that 4 out of 3 people struggle with math but on a scale of 1 to 10 with 6 being the highest I think it works. :)
