    I appreciate how matter of fact and calm you are in this video (both for the actual hoof work and the voice over). You’ve taught us time and again that the corium is tender and delicate and here was a great example of the intersection of outside claw issue, sharp knife, and cow’s movement creating a less favorable moment - but it happens and your thoughtful description and actions and your willingness to show it (appropriately with blur out) and talk about it is just full of great integrity. Thank you.❤️

      @Vousie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah... Unfortunately I dunno how much you can do good when farmers keep putting them on concrete - which we know is the cause of the majority of these issues. At some point I start to worry that doing this is just "enabling" the farmers to actively keep forcing the cows to walk on surfaces that will give them painful hoof issues.

    • @the_great_mammon

I've driven by dairy farms here in NJ, many times the odor is so strong you can smell the cows and the cow chip but you can't see them. 😆 And he's right there in the thick of it. Hi Nate! Awesome is thy skill! So I get to wondering about the dew claws. What are their purpose? Are they similar to horse chestnuts? Many cows have really long/large dew claws but they're not trimmed. I'd think it would be a good idea for keeping the pastern (if it's called on cows) clean and less likely to allow manure to build up. Sure appreciate your thoughts on this. Have a wonderful day!

    I found a set of these knives in my grandfathers toolbox. I always wondered what they were really meant for.
    He used them for cutting and shaping soapstone figurines.

    This may be a silly question, but for odd situations like this, would a dremel hand drill work? Or is the idea to pare it out so that it's a flat surface so no gunk can get in there and cause infection?

      He has a scalpel in his trimming tool arsenal so that could be used but I think that it's due to being wall horn, i. e., much tougher, that he sticks with the trimming knife but used much more delicately.

      A dremel would cause too much vibration I think.

    Congratulations, this kind of procedure are really hard to perform without any unwanted cut. In average how much time a lesion like this takes to heal? 1 year?

    How can you tell this before even starting the trim? I’m fascinated by the process of the initial assessment. You seem to always know instantly.

    Seems like some whittling tools might be better for a job like this particular one like the scoop type ones or the hooped blades? Have you experimented with anything like that?

    Thanks for the video.
    How often do you go through knives?
    Or do you sharpen your own?

      I sharpen them and they last a couple months.

    With separation that goes all the way up the wall like that, it honestly seems like a small V-gouge would work wonders. Less horn removed so as to leave more structural integrity. Depends on the width of separation though, I guess. Could be worth looking into.
